  • Modena-based Italian brand Energica has just launched its new Experia Green Tourer. It's another step toward electric motorcycles becoming mainstream. The battery is more powerful and lighter, and both range and charging times are improved. So aside from all of the obvious comparisons between Electric and internal combustion motorcycles what is the Energica Experia Green Tourer like to ride? I was invited to the UK launch to find out.

    Better range on this one, but the price is still the biggest problem. Also how much will it be worth if you sell it in say 5 years time, with a tired battery & the fact that the latest one will have improved leaps & bounds, probably stuff all. I bought a 4 year old Tiger 800 in 2015 for £5350, have put 15,000 miles on it & it's now worth £3500-£4000 (source sold listings on fleabay). I could spend a few hours working out how much it has cost to own, but I know its not going to be anywhere near the £20,000+ cost of the electric over the same time period.

      The camera microphone can't capture the actual frequencies/sound correctly. Really need to hear it in person. Sounds more like a powerful turbine. They have tweaked that sound over the years and it has gotten quite polished. It fades away over 60 mph too.

    Interesting review, the Experia actually looks good, it definitely has a Multistrada look about it (I own a Multistrada) , I rode an Energica Ribella in Italy some years ago and was impressed with its acceleration and smoothness however I couldn't get my head around there being no gearbox or clutch which made it feel like a large twist and go scooter , the other issue was no noise which I found particularly disconcerting as the bike wasn't giving me any feedback on what it was doing, I remain open to electric but without the engagement (no clutch and gearbox ) and no ICE noise its going to take a major reboot of the brain to convert from ICE to electric.

  • @pl1068

    The issue I’m finding with trying to buy an electric vehicle is that after they are 3 years old you have lost 20% of that range and maybe more if they have been fast charged.

    • @ruahinesrider
      @ruahinesrider 2 роки тому

      Fast charge is for emergency if you're smart.Means take longer to get somewhere but battery will stay premium for longer.260miles range is decent but touring at 110kmh all day range will probably be 220miles which is more than adequate for a day's ride.

    • @OrlandoRick
      @OrlandoRick 2 роки тому +1

      Not very accurate, I'm afraid. There are owners with oggles of miles and many years and they are not experiencing such losses at all. Same applies to modern EV cars.

    • @AdventuresonZero
      @AdventuresonZero 2 роки тому +2

      Fast charging isn't necessarily what damages batteries, it's leaving a battery at 100% or 0% too long (weeks). A healthy battery is one that is ridden as soon as it hits 100% (within a day or two) and is charged when/if it hits 0%. The happy range is keeping the battery b/w 30-70% when not being ridden. Even if used, you can test the draw to see what the health status of the battery is if you're buying a used one. 2 of the 3 electric motorcycles I own were used, and they're holding up just fine!

    • @OrlandoRick
      @OrlandoRick 2 роки тому +1

      @@AdventuresonZero Very well said! I think Energica officially recommends 20-80% for storage; with a preference to use their Long Term Storage mode (where it stays plugged in while stored) when storing it for a longer period at 80%.

    Nice review, Tony, certainly an interesting Machine. What's the whine like while you're riding it? It sounds very pronounced on the video, but some mics seem to pick these things up in a disproportionate manner to how they sound in real life. I think if it did sound like that IRL it would drive me nuts. That's the only thing that immediately puts me off, other than that, the future is coming whether we like it or not.

    Price puts most decent Electric bikes out of my reach unless I want less than 125 performance and a 50 mile range. At the moment those of us with lower incomes can buy something like a CB500X which does a great job at solo touring. In 10 years time the only option for a new touring bike will be far too expensive for a large percentage of the population on lower incomes. Touring on EV will be the preserve of the well off. The rest of us will be riding used ICE bikes until spares cease to be or petrol becomes hard to get or unaffordable.

    I've been a EV car owner for 7yrs.
    EV bike do not interest me in the slightest. In fact I've just bought a new moto Guzzi V85TT. I've also got a s
    Svartpilen 701.. Both bike have after market exhaust on them. And for me that's why I will NEVER own an EV bike. For me and ICE bike is about the engine sounds, exhaust notes, the vibrations from the motor the gear changing. The blipping the throttle on down shifts. My Husky is a wheelie enducing torque monster. My Guzzi is viby, it shakes from. Side too side when I rev it... I ride bikes for enjoyment. My EV cars are a Tool for getting me from A too B. They are soulless.
    2nd I did a ride last Sunday if 340 miles around the back roads of Donegal in Ireland. Not a single rapid charger to be found on the coast roads I was on. My guzzi has a tank range of 260 miles. I passed many petrol stations which I did avail of. Driving is stressful enough without the worry of running out of juice in the arse end of donegal.
    Ps that whine would get on my nerves. Its a really bad pitch

    Millions of bikers for decades are used to have a greenlight on the dash to indicate 'neutral'. Now here it means 'good to go'. ... Seems like a stupid choice. Sorry. ... Why not just invert it?
