  • Adventure bikes have dominated sales for the last 15 years and electric motorcycle sales are growing at a faster rate than any other category, but we’ve seen relatively few attempts to combine the two. The new #energica #Experia looks to be the most convincing attempt yet to create a battery-powered machine that genuinely matches ICE-powered rivals in terms of performance, weight and range. Michael Mann of #bikesocial fame tested one in Italy recently.

    Biggest problem is still the charge time. 40 minutes to go to 80% means that you’ll spend a lot of time on tour at a charge station. Get that down to 15 minutes (wee break + quick bite), price it about £15k and it’ll become a lot more interesting.

      In practice you schedule your 1-2 daily DC charging stops around Lunch or Afternoon Snack. That's 3-ish hours of riding, stop for 1 hour to eat lunch, 3 more hours of riding. I find (current EV motorcycle owner) than in practice that it is no big deal. You stop, settle in, use restroom, get something to eat/drink, etc.

    Great footage! My wife and I have two Experias on order, which we definitely intend to tour with. We have the previous generation Ribelles and with those we have learned to tour about 275 miles a day (one DC fast charge in between but can do 400 miles with two charges). Sure, not as much, as easily, as a gas bike; but it fits our leisurely touring style. With this new model we hope to be able to go further (300+ and 450+ mile days) and stay out on longer multi-day trips (extra storage makes a big difference). Yes, we do have to adapt our trips for chargers, but it hasn't been too bad. The apps for finding chargers are good and part of the route planning is some charger routing. But it hasn't stopped us from riding all over New England, PA Amish country, Monument Valley, Sequioa National Park, Yosemite, Blue Ridge Parkway, Key West, and more. With these new ones we will be able to go further and farther. Our old touring bikes (KTM 1290 SA, KTM 1290 SDGT) were simply too hot in the summer and required service way too often (something always was acting up after every long ride). EV motorcycles are smooth, cool, and incredibly reliable.

    I'm an EV convert but on the low-end of the price range. I've got a Surron Storm Bee enduro (cost £6k slightly used) and a Dengfu eMTB (electric mountain bike for £2500). So realistically that's a 40 minute stop every 150 miles for a 'touring' bike that costs £27k, assuming that:
    a) you can find a charger
    b) the charger works
    c) you don't have to wait for a turn on the charger
    d) you've got a brand new battery
    e) it isn't cold and/or dark.

      You get about £2000 of that back over 50K miles in reduced servicing costs. The rest, arguably, in saved fuel costs over the same 50K miles. So if you wanted a fun commuter for 50 miles a day, it would break even in a year or so while saving the planet. The 2nd year is free money! Caveat: The reason your Tesla battery lasts longer than the car but your laptop battery doesn’t is the BMS on the Tesla that intelligently looks after the battery. I note that the Energica water cools battery & motor, which will help longevity, but does it run a BMS? If not, battery life will be an open question for now…

    I just spent 2.5 months and 13,500 km riding around Europe on a bike with similar horsepower, torque and weight (an ‘07 R1200GSA). Even the same Pirelli tires. Looking back I think this Experia would have been the perfect bike for that trip. During the fun sections (like the two weeks in the Dolomiti) I would only do 200 to 250 km a day, so could do it on one charge and then charge up at the hotel overnight waking up to a full tank the next morning. On longer distance days on the autobahn there are loads of DC fast chargers at most rest stops so stopping for a cappuccino and croissant would be enough time to charge the bike. Yeah, this could be my next bike very easily.

    I wonder how many touring destinations could handle a group of electric bikes all turning up requiring charge? When touring Scotland on our ICE bikes our whole group of bikes were filled at one rural pump in under 10mins.
    Instead of choosing touring destinations and stops you really want to see, touring will be based around where your app tells you there is available charging.

The form of a tank is such that it allows for a lot more function than storing fuel. It offers you a space to grab with your knees in tight turns or when braking hard. It can be turned into a storage if there's enough room left. You can place a tank bag on top of it. I'd certainly dislike a bike that has nothing in front of me, even if only because I can rest on that tank when I'm riding long distance.

    Does anyone know what is limiting EV motorcycles producers to have higher charging speed? This seems to be the top of currently available EV bikes and it is charging with only 21-23kW, why? Cars easily do 50kW, 100kW and the top models even more. Is it the size of the bike that doesn't allow some devices which would add too much to weight? Imagine this bike can charge double the speed, you would get 0-80% in 20min, and if it is able to charge 4 times faster you get that state of charge in 10min - and we still would be talking about charging with 80kW speed which is not the highest speed comparing to cars. Big part of EV bike cost is the battery so I really would prefer to heve EV bike with 10-15kWh battery, which would bring cost down to 15-20k but have it charged 0-80% in 5min-10min. Thanks!

    • @vegardnilsen9418
      @vegardnilsen9418 2 роки тому

      Maximum available charging speed is related to the capacity of the battery. The lower capacity batteries in motorcycles must be charged at lower rates to maintain battery health. Time to charge from e.g. 10 to 80 % should be comparable between cars and motorcycles, though.

    • @OrlandoRick
      @OrlandoRick 2 роки тому

      Cars have very aggressive active cooling systems and much larger batteries (the larger the battery the faster you can charge), allowing much faster charging speeds. The current 25kW charging speed is limited because the battery only has passive cooling and is quite small in comparison to a car (1/3 to 1/4 the capacity). I imagine eventually a future model will eventually crack the light-active cooling challenge while charging and then be able to scale up closer to 50kW.

The principle of EV (esp. motorbikes) is appealing, but I get the feeling that I'm going to laugh when hearing about the range and the price of this thing... Of course, there is a development to be made, but why trying to replicate the performances of thermal engine motorbikes now ? The development would probably be faster and more efficient if it was focussed on smaller bikes... Edit 2: 1:25 and now the price. I'll let myself laugh to death, or go ride my Super Adventure. I guess that when speaking about that kind of money, Energica stores are equipped with some kind of room where you can get an optional public spanking and go home with the tape. 2:16 Oh, and you don't even get a remote adjustment for preload with that kind of money. Come on. 3:00 And there is a key. Why not a starter kit, when they're at it? 5:43 Here we are. The claimed range is GREAT. And I don't believe it. Instead you just mention the price, which I'm guessing 95% of real world bikers won't be able to afford now or ever. 0 to 60 even 0 to 100 the energica would stick with the Multistrada or 1290 SAS, maybe but at least they'll tour on for many more miles whilst the electric bike will have sapped a load of it's battery life trying to keep up! There are never, ever going to be enough charging points in the world, if every vehicle becomes electric. Now imagine just one group of 10 people touring together all trying to charge their bikes at the lunch stop, oh and now the other 2/3/4groups of other tourers all wanting to charge aswell, cloud cuckoo land. Vehicles will again become the preserve of the rich, which I'm guessing is the aim anyway. Unsubscribing because that was a load of biased tosh.

    Just waiting for the hydrogen burning powered machines, jcb can burn hydrogen just like petrol engine (ice). So there maybe be hope to have the same bikes we currently have but with more power and less issues with the current charging ev vehicles infrastructure in the UK. Then maybe more realistic main purchase price. Insurance is still a high price issue for ev motorcycle.

    Electric touring bike, surely an oxymoron, great if you want to tour the Isle of Wight. So in ideal conditions it has a max range of about 150 miles, throw in a few hills, high speed motorways and/or cold temperatures lucky to see 100 miles. And it costs 27k, so 12k more than a very decent actual touring bike.

      Per leg, then you charge, and go again. Max range is about 160 miles in touring road use. Stop for lunch and re-charge, then ride another 160 miles. Charge again if you want to keep going.

    Why would anyone buy this? Even if the price was halved you’d be mad to buy one.
    It still needs servicing ( by “specialist techs”) to maintain warranty as do all EV’s. Not much cheaper than ICE servicing from experience.
    To charge it still costs money (which is getting more expensive per kWh) unless it’s summer and you have solar panels.
    You have to wait while it charges if you can find a charger that is available and isn’t broken. Don’t forget to download the correct app add all your details etc. I’ve noticed when staying away less places are willing to let you plug in for free at campsites/ b&b’s etc.
    Hybrid is the way to go for now unless you have a short commute a solar set up with storage capability or can charge at work for free.
    Synthetic fuel/hydrogen/hybrid has got to be the next solution? Electricity is not the answer.

    Not wanting to piss on anyone's parade but Volvo did a study on the carbon footprint of electric vs ICE and because electric have a far higher carbon footprint in the manufacturing stage it only starts to become eco friendly after around 90000 miles, which in most cases is more than half the life span of the vehicle

    • @johnnyblue4799
      @johnnyblue4799 2 роки тому

      Yeah, I've seen that. For bikes though it might be a bit less than 90k miles because the batteries are much smaller, but still, not looking that great for EVs as the publicity tells us.

    • @OrlandoRick
      @OrlandoRick 2 роки тому +2

      The study was about the manufacturing process only. When you factor in the life of the vehicle, the overall footprint is lower. The scale turned at around 30k-60k miles, not 90k. However, this was a challenging study because of certain key assumptions it made that have already changed. But as an EV motorcycle owner, I own it because it is simply a better motorcycle. Smoother, cooler, faster. I'd still buy it even if you told me it had a 4 times worse carbon footprint and sunflower dies every time I charge it.

    • @johnnyblue4799
      @johnnyblue4799 2 роки тому

      @@OrlandoRick No, it wasn't only manufacturing. If it was the EV will never get on top because they start with a CO2 handicap from manufacturing. They factored in the energy needed to run those vehicles.

      @@OrlandoRick I wasn't having a go at EV motorcycles, I'm glad you like yours. I've never ridden one because where I live it's the best part of a five round trip just to get to and from a regular dealership, my comment was directed more at the way people are being sold the idea of EV's as being this environmental life saver when the reality is not the case, I fully understand that we have to ditch ICE vehicles and in a metropolitan area EV would be a great thing to reduce air pollution but the other elephant in the room regarding them is, we're years behind in the infrastructure to allow millions of people to charge vehicles at home, it would require massive investment from power supply companies which just won't happen for various reasons but mainly their not interested because it would affect profits.

    • @OrlandoRick
      @OrlandoRick 2 роки тому

      @@diggeronenineone7254 Yep, lots of good points. I didn't buy EV to save the environment, I went EV because it was simlpy a 'better bike' to me. That's why my little joke about I don't care if it is worst for the environment (of course I do care); but the point was that those were not factors in my consideration. I'm a performance freak and once I went EV, I can't go back.

    Energica will have a tough time on their hand based on all the dinosaurs chiming in here! Charging points are increasing rapidly (notwithstanding differing connectors, which really needs to be standardised- you don’t have 3 different petrol pump nozzles!) and unless I misheard the range was from 150 miles, not a maximum of 150 miles. Quiet, clean, no nasty higher order vibes knackering you on a longer day. Sounds like a decent touring recipe. But why oh why build an electric bike with a sodding chain! Put a quiet, clean belt drive on a quiet, clean bike for goodness’ sake!

    • @OrlandoRick
      @OrlandoRick 2 роки тому

      Range in an EV is a tricky thing. With this bike you should be able to get about 130 miles at highway speed limits, 160 at faster non-highway roads (45-60 miles per hour), and obviously it will go up from that if you go slower urban speeds (who does that?). The chain on an Energica produces very little noise. The noise you hear is actually engineered via the motor's reduction drive.
