  • In 2023 I had the opportunity to review the Energica Experia electric motorcycle. I had this bike for a couple of weeks and tested it everywhere I could. I must say I think it is currently the best electric motorcycle available in the market, but it comes with a hefty price tag! However, this motorcycle sets the standard for where electric motorcycles are headed in the next few years regarding charging, range and performance!
Big thanks to English Electric Motor Co. for the loan of this machine! www.englishelectricmotorco.com/

The thing I like about electric bikes and DCT bikes is the way they get off the line, no chance of stalling, just twist and gone! 😊

I so wanted the Experia to be my next bike. I owned a 2017 Zero DSR and found the charging here in the US San Francisco area where I live to be terrible. My bike had a level 2 charge tank. On the road I found most ChragePoint stations were either out of service or shared power, only producing 3.1kW. So I waited for the Energica and the Zero DSR/X to be released. The Experia has a DC to DC fast charger, but their level 2 is only 3.1kW due to heat, which I confirmed with the company. Here there are also issues with EVGo, Charge America DC chargers. And the price of both the Experia and DSR/X are around the same, USD 28k. So I went back to gas. A 2022 Ducati Multistrada V4S Sport for around the same price. BUT WITH WAY MORE useable tech than either of the EV bikes. Luggage, electronic suspension, heated rider and passenger seats and grips, adaptive cruise control, up and down quick shifter, hill hold control, blind spot warning, etc. The range issue with all 2-wheel EVs has much to do with the non-erodynamic nature of the human form. Above 65 the drag sucks down battery life like an alcoholic at an open bar. I really liked many aspects of my Zero, the silence, and the lack of any smells. The infrastructure isn't here yet for EVs. And unlike sitting in an EV car, that's not the case for bikes. Charge stations are often not located near any amenities like food, toilets, or even in the shade.

A really good, comprehensive, review. I am watching it one day after I test rode this specific machine around Redgrave. It is a great bike, easier to handle than my Zero DSR, which is 30 kg lighter. The low down battery weight helps. But the control interface is so confusing, I didn't manage to change modes. And when one of the EEMC guys tried to change the mode, he didn't confirm the change, so it stayed in Eco mode (maximum 55 mph). The other guy did it properly. They are selling this ex-demo bike at a discount to the full price. I have put down a deposit, but first I have got to find someone to insure it.

I test rode this and it was one of the best bikes i have ever ridden. My only qualm was i felt it needed a bit more power.

The reason the gov is going to ban ICE has nothing to do with this bike. This motorcycle is just an option and a sign of how far electric bikes have come in a few short years, ICE bikes have had since 1885! Even when they ban ICE bikes all the ones that have ever been made will still be there! Also are you saying the core value of motorcycling is what powers the bike? Because if you are we ride for very different reasons.
