Those in charge of the entertainment business will Never give this guy a chance. This is an old classic country song. And done very well. It is Not the propaganda crap we hear today.
I was born and raised in Staunton Va. I grew up listening and watching the Statler Brothers and was even around them a few times. Eric done a excellent job with this song. Wish he would do more.
I learned about this version filling out a quiz. I'm 64 and still love this song. So I thought I'd listen to it. They do the song justice. I'm going to listen to more from this guy but I agree with everyone it's a shame he wasn't a big success. Reminds me of the Stray Cats which we don't have anymore. I'm glad this got over 2 million views.
Saw Eric 25 years ago in Tootsies and then a year later. A dynamaic and talented performer/composer. How on earth he didn't make it big I'll never know. He played in London and Country Music People gave him a great write up. When I see some of the muppets today, I just shake my head.
My late mom heard this on the radio and loved it! She always felt like the Statler Brothers version was a bit too "chipper" for someone who's slowly losing their mind. She said that, with the drums and Eric's deeper darker voice, the song becomes more dangerous-sounding, like he's about to crack and start killing people a la "Falling Down". (If you haven't seen that movie, watch it. It's good)
I love the original but it hit me that it is more chipper, or at least in the early versions of it. My mom played this type of music when I was a kid (born in 70) so even though it wasn’t “new”, it felt new to me. I miss this type of song.
dangerous? killing people? dude's just depressed, the "chipper" tone is just him trying to mask it, after all why would he keep saying he's fine and having "lots of fun" if he sounded depressed and edgy ?^the happy and quirky melody also contrasts well with the lyrics and gives very particular anxiety notes that are missing on this cover. Dude on this one sounds like he already gave up and is being ironic about it ; While on the original he sounds like he's tryna super hard to convince not just his friends but mostly himself he's fine
When this first came out I was living in my first apartment....the wallpaper in the kitchen was covered in mushrooms! I didn't have the money to go anywhere except work. I didn't have a TV either, so I REALLY felt this song!!!
I was totally impressed when this came out. He did such a great job with this cover. I was expecting him to be the next big thing. I was so sad that he didn't get to continue in the industry.

This song came out when I was 22. And it HIT me so hard back then. I adore this song. To me, it's about how life was for real introverts, before online gaming and social media. Finding ways to entertain ourselves because we really did NOT want to be out there.
Great version of an awesome song that I often use to explain my need for solitude to my friends who would have all the reason in the world not to have me in their reality.
Heard this today on the radio during a throwback Thursday, and the minute the chorus hit it was like BAM! Face full of nostalgia. And I find it kind of funny that the older I get, the more I learn that songs I loved as a kid were covers.

Now don't tell me I've nothin' to do
It's good to see you, I must go, I know I look a fright
Anyway my eyes are not accustomed to this light
And my shoes are not accustomed to this hard concrete
So I must go back to my room and make my day complete
