Lyrics:
This bed of Rose's that I lay on
Where I was taught to be a man
This bed of Rose's where I'm living
Is the only kind of life I'll understand

"Smoking cigarettes and watching captain Kangaroo, now don't tell me I've nothing to do." Just a badass line from a lyrical genius!
Haha! 😂
"That's how you're gonna beat 'em, Butch. They keep underestimating you."
Was about to post the same comment lol
The bass singer never trying to make that one moment about himself, yet what everyone will always remember.
My favorite part of the song, always.
A footnote: Flowers on the Wall won the 1966 Grammy award for Best Contemporary (Rock and Roll) Performance by a Group, Vocal or Instrumental. The Statlers won the vote for the award over their competitors, a quartet of mop-haired lads from Liverpool.
Thank you so much for that tidbit. My dad loved the group, and he would have been 25 in 1966, so it's understandable why he loved them so much.
@@PisceanGardener yes, copy and paste is nice
@@PisceanGardener why would they edit it? that would make no sense
Nooo! Really?? W O W !!😮
The Beatles ?
Never heard of them...
A beautiful introvert anthem.
Or a ''What do you mean, depression?'' anthem, in some contexts.
@@sampeacaml9307 so true. Wise observation. Don't forget OCD. Better to stay inside and count flowers on the wall, smoking cigarettes and watching the captain. I hope all is ok.. . . .
@@brianbelton3605 For me or in general? Simply curious.
Yes, I thought the same. This is one of my favorite Statler tunes because I relate to it so much. The one and only detail in the lyrics I haven't done is watch Captain Kangaroo. 😂 I would if I could find it, jusr so my life would match the song perfectly, but it's not available. 😂
Tempted to say one of the greatest country songs ever written, and performed. But it really transcends country. The comic but achingly painful verses by the tenors were just brilliant. And Harold hitting the beautifully deep "Kaaa-ngaroo" a half beat before the others was always one of the most fun two seconds I could ever enjoy in a song. RIP Harold, and Lew.
Lots of country songs are depressing and upbeat like this.
Bruce Willis nails that syncopated part in Pulp Fiction beautifully. It's not particularly easy to sing.
Folk not country
My thoughts exactly. I loved Harold's exquisite bass voice from the moment I first heard him on this number. So sad to learn of his passing on April 24, 2020, at age 80.
I'm so glad that I grew up listening to this group one of my favorite bands! Their music was what set future stage for country music today 😊..
I will always have a special place in my heart for The Statler Brothers! My grandma was their secretary all the way up until they retired. I remember sitting in their "meeting" room eating oranges, while Harold made my little brother and I laugh hysterically 🤣 we still keep in touch with Jimmy once in a while. These guys were the kindest men I've ever met. They definitely kick-started my passion for singing. Man so many awesome memories!
My mom babysat for their kids! Staunton, VA
wow what a great experience! lucky you
@elizabethhiers Awesome! My grandparents live in spotswood, between Greenville and Lexington, Va. I love Staunton. I always make sure to stop in at the old Dairy Wrights drive-in restaurant!
@deekrivers1 Thanks! I'm only 30. Not many kids my age would know who they are. The only people I could ever brag about it to were always older than me 🤣 Definitely had a blessed childhood.
Great story! I have always loved the Statlers...
RIP Harold Reid. Another part of my childhood gone, but not forgotten.
Yep he was on of the best Bass Voices Ive ever heard
no doubt. One of my fondest childhood memories is my parents allowing my brothers and I to stay up late (when we were much younger) to watch The Statler Brothers Show on TNN when that existed
Just heard. His voice was an amazing gift from above. RIP
Omg. I didn’t know that he died. I just like listening to these guys
My mom thought Harold was fantastic!
Pulp Fiction brought this wonderful song to my attention! I’ve never looked back! One of my favorites!!
It took 55 years but this finally became our new anthem.
haha, you got it!
My lady, this is my theme song of the pandemic
But where's Captain Kangaroo?

Thank you
I’m setting here with my 87 year old mother with severe Alzheimer’s. I’m playing her this song she had all these recordings on eight track in her car. I remember as a kid thank you for uploading.
Aww - Bless your heart - thats a hard, hard thing to go through...😢
@@lanasmiley5643 Thank you she easy to work with smiles and her care facility says she is an angel to take care of. We kept her at home for five years and the UTIs and everything got to much for us to handle. I spend all day and Sunday evenings with her. We always enjoy the Statler Brothers music. I can always get some good reactions from her with Statler music.

@@tb40ford That's beautiful~ as someone who took care of both my elderly parents I know how hard it is but it's also very rewarding and you'll be so glad you did it after she's gone. Music seems to be one of the only things that penetrates through to memory, and recognition. I hope you're well, one year later 😇🙏
It's amazing that a country vocal group won a Grammy Award over The Beatles "Help!" in 1966 with this song! That's how good the Stalters are. They beat the greatest rock and roll band in the world at the time and they aren't even a rock and roll band! 🤷👍✌️🤘
A very interesting piece of information.
I wasn't born until the '70s ; but after reading your remark, it occurs to me that the GRAMMY's used to issue awards based on 'talent'... rather than adhering to the demands of Sony, Universal & Warner Chappell industries.
They were the fab four of country! We need artists like this these days!
“Playin’ Solitaire til dawn with a deck of 51.” Man, that was a long night.
Hello,how are you doing
RIP Harold. Fly high, good sir.
He is with my mom now! She loved Harold!
I had a BIG CRUSH on LEW, He help me when I needed him most
Harold was my teens hero when I discovered that I was gonna be a bass. I'm 56 years old and he's still my hero!
He was my favorite 😭😭😭😭

The Statler Brothers played at Mineola in Fox Lake, IL and as a young old girl I was so devistated that I had to be there and watch them. It turned out to be one of the best days of my childhood in memory.
R.I.P. Harold Reid amazing singer and best vocal groups of all time ❤️
Hello Dear
How are you doing today?
My father passed in May this year at age 84. Career USMC (1954-1974) and two tours in Viet Nam. He LOVED the Statler Brothers and this song especially. He said this song was exceptionally well played when released. Great memories of my Dad with all of their music. RIP Dad, and God bless you and everyone out here on YT and in the world!
Sorry for your loss. You have great music memories of your dad. My dad is still alive at 85 and loves his music ❤️

Love this song.
Dylan Klebold vibes
"It is not a poem of escape or rebirth. It is a poem about the end of a man's usefulness" -Kurt Vonnegut
I love Vonnegut, but if he said that in reference to this song, it must have been during his suicidal period.
He did! I just looked it up. hahaha
His voice was so rich and deep. He might have been the best bass sing of any genre ever.
Rip Harold ( the bassman ) 81 years old . . . Oldie but always a goodie 💜
Yes
In this video hes all the way on the left
This song came up in an internet thread, and it was the first time I'd heard it since childhood. Damn, I'd forgotten how much I love this.
I just watched the a capella version by Home Free and was thrilled to hear it again. The last time I heard it was in the mid-90s.
When I was growing up this was played on all of the stations, not just country ones.
I remember my grandpa picking me up after friday football games during hunting season and driving the 3 hours across the mountains to his brothers place for the weekend to hunt deer, he had their farewell concert on cd and we would listen to that after the radio stations cut out and left us with static. These songs bring back memories of those late night drives to the cabin…
Love this song since I was a kud
This song is the best ever to describe depression. At least I thought so when I was in gutter counting stars.
You are not alone. Take good care.
“We are all of us in the gutter, some of us are looking at the stars.” -Oscar Wilde or The Pretenders.
I never knew what this song was about untill I was diagnosed with depression.
I thought it was just about some guy who was bored.
After my diagnosis, I totally related to this song.

Yeah, man, that shit is no joke. I hope you feel better soon.
Yes we've all lost a love and wished that she could hear us singing the song. Counting flowers on the goddamn wall.
Bruce Willis, Pulp fiction 😂😂 Ever 😘😘😍😍
Thank you UA-cam! Man, they were so young here.
Best era in country music imo. Tom Selleck would be proud of those epic staches! Great song!

One of the best quartets ever! The harmonizing is amazing!❤

Flowers On The Wall was by written by the original tenor with the amazing voice Lew Dewitt who passed away 8/15/1990. RIP Lew and Harold. Yesterday will never be forgotten,

I hope everyone here is doing okay these days. Be safe and know that people care about you, even if it may not feel like it at times. If you are feeling troubled, maybe professional help is the answer, or talking to a trusted friend about what you are going through. Wish you all the best.
Two gone now. Sad..... Harold and Lew. Always be remembered.
After loving them n grade 11 til now age 83. Still love them and think they are still the best!!

They are the best! From the tenor to the bass, the lyrics, the guitar, the rhythm and everything else, impossible to match. Lew DeWItt, what a song!! The Statler Brothers, what fantastic entertainers.
RIP Harold ....Thank You for all your great songs .
Lew DeWitt wrote and sang Tenor for years with them!!
I was a child when I first heard this song on the radio, it was one of the first cross-over hits and I became a life long fan of The Statler Brothers RIP Harold Reid, and thank you guys for all the wonderful music you created.
I based my life on this song, unknowingly though I first heard it as child (born in 1959).
RIP Harold and Lew (leftmost and rightmost, respectively).
2019 and there still as bad ass as ever
And..2020..
Big Kountry Trucker agreed
They got paid by Cash
It get better in 2020
And.. 2021..
I love this song. I haven't heard it in over 40 years.
I keep hearin' you're concerned about my happiness
But all that thought you're givin' me is conscience I guess
If I were walkin' in your shoes, I wouldn't worry none
While you and your friends are worried about me, I'm havin' lots of fun
Chorus:
Countin' flowers on the wall
That don't bother me at all
Playin' solitaire 'til dawn with a deck of 51
Smokin' cigarettes and watchin' Captain Kangaroo
Now don't tell me, I've nothin' to do
Last night I dressed in tails, pretended I was on the town
As long as I can dream it's hard to slow this swinger down
So please don't give a thought to me, I'm really doin' fine
You can always find me here, I'm havin' quite a time
Chorus
It's good to see you, I must go, I know I look a fright
Anyway my eyes are not accustomed to this light
And my shoes are not accustomed to this hard concrete
So I must go back to my room and make my day complete
Chorus
Don't tell me, I've nothin' to do
(musixmatch)
Godspeed Harold Reid. Thank you so much for bringing joy in my life. Rest in Peace. 4/25/2020

Staltler Brothers can sing about depression with a up beat sound.
RIP Harold Reid. you will be miss, you a real legend
My grandmother introduced me to the group. Country music isnt the same as it was during their time. They were a great group all around.
Hello Samantha
How are you doing today?
I just visited my 94 year old grandpa's house with my two teenage boys who play bass and guitar; we listened to his Statler Brothers LP and even though they have no interest in country music at all they couldn't stop tapping, clapping and moving along to this all-time classic. They're both now going to learn the song to play together. Luckily their dad has a deep voice for those Captain Kaaaaangaroo parts. lol

Hello how are you doing today 😊😊
This song reminds me of my wife. It was her favorite song before she lost battling cancer, I wish I could change the hands of time, she was always there for me and our lovely daughter, life could be so unfair most times but sometimes I wonder why bad things always happen to good people
this song, it's ideas, the way they sing, perform and seemingly live it. this sums up why as a European the US will always be a dream for me I hope to live in one day.
Don't come here till Trump is President again. Our country is in a hell of a mess.
We need you here as a citizen to help us overcome the present tyranny. Cheers from the USA.
