For me, there is no question on "preference" for quilting. I will do it myself, on a domestic machine, because I would not be able to afford to do it any other way. My great grandmother did the quilting by hand....and she made a LOT of quilts. No whining allowed from me when I have so much more at my disposal than she ever did.

That's amazing I just put up my old quilting frames. I'm going to see if I can do more by hand. Since I retired $200 a quilt is minimal and I can't afford it. Hand quilting it is.

My grandmother, g-gma, great aunts etc did hand cutting, piecing, quilting, and sewing. My grandfather made a quilting frame that I remember having saw horses on each end. It was a family affair. I remember MomMom teaching me a little bit of each and explaining different processes😊. Fond memories.. No treasured... memories 🤍
Later in life she did use the sewing machine some-why not?
I would love to be part of a quilting bee.

This video is so encouraging. I have the Juki machine I use for straight-line sewing. I am very intimidated by free-motion quilting. I cannot afford to send my quilts out for long arm quilting. I have always quilted with curved pins and straight lines on my Singer Confidence Quilter machine. I am definitely going to give this a try on my Juki...gloves and all. Thank you for an amazingly encouraging video. I will likely be referring back to it. Right now, I am going to check out your binding video. I have always wrapped the backing around, folded it over, and sewed it down for the binding.

Quick tip. If you start at center of quilt and work in a quadrant, then go back to center, do next quadrant, then repeat for the other two quadrants. So don’t have to struggle with the quilt as much and you never have a lot of bulk under the machine.

When I put the 'sandwich' together, I strip my spare queen bed down to the silky top mattress. That is what I use to lay it out and I use HUGE safety pins every 5-6". This works for me and I'm able to pin easily and I don't like the spray. But whatever works for you. I enjoy your videos.

I’ll keep practicing. 😄 What i have found is that the beginner quilting that is so obvious on the newly finished quilt, turns into a beautiful crinkly quilt once washed. I have been watching your videos and you do such a great job. I haven’t been able to find a white cutting mat, where did you get yours? I have macular degenerative eye disease and it is hard to see to cut on colored mates.

Loved watching this tutorial. I’m fairly new to quilt. One question please, do I need a special foot for free motion quilting, I can only do a sort of Stitch In The Ditch now but I would like to try free motion.

I love my Juki! It just felt off. Sorry I know that doesnt help a ton, I had the thread break and it just felt like the bobbin was unwinding to slowly. I did a video on this machine recently ua-cam.com/video/ZcFxfMujxdg/v-deo.htmlsi=j8ZWeO-YLkDnsFRF

I stick with my 80/12 for most things. If Im doing a lot of paper piecing then Ill swap to a 90/14. Hope that helps!

What type of batting are you using?

      I primarily use two kinds.
      tinyurl.com/PickinStichesCottonBatting
      or
      tinyurl.com/PickinStitches8020
I almost always by a roll. So much more cost effective if you are doing a lot of quilting.

What stitch length do you use?

    • @pickinstitches

Feed dogs are dropped so it shouldn't matter, but you can also drop to zero.

What stitch length did you use?

    • @pickinstitches
      @pickinstitches  Місяць тому +1

When the feed dogs are dropped your hands are driving the speed of the movement and the length of the stitch. Ive heard of people dropping the length to 0 but your dogs shouldn't be moving unless your machine doesn't really have a free-motion function. So drop to zero cant hurt, but mine was at 2.5 for this whole video but the feed dogs were down. Hope that helps!
