I just discovered your video on top quilting. I was looking for blocks a month videos. I'm new to it. I don't have the cash to pay someone else to long arm. I have just finished my quilts with stitch in the ditch. I don't have the courage to do the free form top stitch like some do. I thank you so much for giving us these tips. I for sure will try it on my next quilt.
These are great techniques! I have a sit-down long arm and my favorite part of quitting is piecing the top. If I could sell the tops and let whoever buys them do the sandwiching and quilting, I would be very happy!

Hi. Instead of gaging where to turn on expanding square use a cross drawn lines to the corners and the filling in 1/4 at a time use a middle drawn line each direction. These lines are where to stop needle to change direction. Lovely designs.
I agree with hat spray basting is expensive. I use washable glue basting ( Elmer's School glue). It adheres well. Needle passes through easily and it all washes away after quilting. At a fraction of the cost I love it.

This is great, thanks. I've bought a bigger machine just to make this easier because like you I'm a piecer, but also sending things off to get longarm quilted is really expensive. I do narrow unruled straight lines, contours, and stitch in the ditch. I'm trying to expand, so I appreciate these ideas.
Thank you for the ideas. Many quilts are beautifully and intricately quilted, but are also intimidating. Your five samples show us how to our quilts can look great. Spacing the parallel lines close does make the quilting look intricate and impressive, but the technique is inviting rather than intimidating.

Walk and Walk 2.0 are my favorite quilting related books. I’m determined to finish my placemats this year. Each of them will use a different quilting design because I want as much practice as possible.
I appreciate the need to save dollars when quilting. I have been making my own basting spray. It is very economical and works quite well. Thank you for sharing your time and skills. I will definitely give your ideas a try.
@sewbeitquilts Chatterbox Quilts on youtube. "Make Quilt Basting Spray" is the name of the video. I have used washable school glue also. When I used the school blue I only quilted a sample and then I washed and dried it to see how well I would like it and it turned out well also. I think the homemade spray base is more economical and it is easy to apply. One recipe was enough for a queen size quilt and a thirty" by forty" wall hanging.
Your opening comments reminded me of the time a friend's daughter busted her in a quilting store. When she was asked about her mom's quilts, she innocently said, "Oh she doesn't finish them. She just starts them." The whole place erupted in gentle, understanding laughter, and the ladies there (customers and staff) assured my friend that they had a lot of UFO's also.
My favorite way to quilt mine is free motion quilting. I feel constrained if I have to do straight lines so my walking foot has never been used. I used to call myself a Top Gun quilter...I feel the need, the need for speed, LOL. My machine currently is a Janome Horizon Memory Craft 8200 Special Edition. There is something about the effect of symmetrical straight lines for smaller quilts, though, that is very appealing. ~Cynthia, N. GA mountains
I usually quilt small projects, but I am beginning to do throw-size quilts. I always sew using a cross-hatch, which is my favorite. You have shown some new ways to quilt and I will definitely try them. Thank you for the great ideas!
Love these ideas, especially the one with the Vs and the one with the wavy lines. Great ideas. All of the quilting made the quilts come to life. And yes, I have hair all over mine, too. Why is that? 😂
Thank you, thank you, thank you...I have half a dozen or more quilt tops and others that just need to be pieced together. I NEVER know how to quilt them at the end. I do not want to ruin the quilt by picking the wrong pattern or technique, so I just play and then fold and put away. This gives me so many ideas on simple endings. Now to get busy.
After seeing your slide lock rulers, I jumped over to your video showing the manufacturing process. Goodness me, they will help me so much in getting straight cuts. Amazing. I bought the bundle. Thank you! 😘
This video is right up my alley! I could probably send my quilts (I make only a few each year) out to a long armer, but I'm one of those people that feels it's made by me only if I've done every step, piece, quilt, bind. I got the book you mentioned and do find it a great inspiration. I hadn't done the V's but I love the way yours looked. I happen to be making a table topper block that looks a lot like yours. I'm totally going to use that technique on it! Looking forward to watching more of your videos. I just hit subscribe too! 👍
What a COOL TOOL, you've created Miss Fallon! Love the table topper, the third one, your piecing and choice of fabric, the spiral square quilting and everything else about that table toppr! Oh, I also have that fabric line in my stash. I checked out a few more of your videos and your FMQ isn't so bad either. In fact your quite good at it. Keep quilting and creating! Di
Thank you Fallon! ❤ I particularly enjoyed the angled quilting in your star quilt. Typically I do swirly spirals in FMQ but I’m about to give ruler quilting a try. Maybe with a walking foot as you demonstrated.
So far, I have been just piecing quilt tops and the other ladies sandwich and hand tie the quilts. Then I bind them. Thank you!!! I am excited to be able to quilt on my machine.
Terrific tutorial Fallon! Thank you so much for sharing these quilting techniques. They couldn't have come at a better time as i just made my first large quilt and was wondering the best way to quilt it. Very much appreciated!
I just found this channel! I am like you when it comes to quilting. Lots of tops and none completed. I do a lot of free motion quilting just to get them done when someone wants one. lol😂
This is so helpful! Thank you. I did some wavy line quilting on a baby quilt I'm finishing up. It's fun and easy and even as it was my first one, I really liked it! I do enjoy the look of straight lines/ line quilting more, but we will see which type I do next.
My least favourite part of making a quilt is sandwiching and basting, basting is a bit better since I discovered 505 spray. My favourite part is sewing on the binding. I do one side by machine and the other by hand. I quite enjoy hand quilting even though I’m not the best, I find it very relaxing. I always practice for 5-10 minutes on a scrap to get my rhythm going before I start on the actual quilt. When machine quilting I like to use the metal seam guide bar that slots into my walking foot to measure the spaces between quilting rows. It means you only need to mark one or two stitching lines, you can even use it on curves or wavy lines and you can get the space exactly the size you want. Like you I always start at the same side when machine quilting lines. I find it stops puckering and pulling on the back of the quilt, which I get if I go up and down. This year I’d like to try and get the hang of FMQ, my new machine has a stitch regulator so my stitches should be the same length and that was what always put me off. I hate uneven stitches.
I hand sewed my first binding on recently and it was so relaxing! I may not do that for all of them but I think I will again from time to time. I do have that metal bar too, but mine is held in place by a tiny screw and it never gets tight enough to keep the bar even. Maybe there is a trick to it but mine hasn’t worked for me. I can see how it would be really helpful if I could keep it even!
My bar was not tight on my machine so my husband cut a piece of plastic straw and used about a quarter of the round of the straw in the space with the bar. Now it stays in place. Hope this helps someone.
Basting is my least favorite as well. I use the 505, however haven't found a method that I can get the backing tight enough. I only sew across, never across and down, because the backing will pucker. I have found that I do like straight line or a wavy line or wavy interlocking random lines. If doing straight lines, I use the guide that came with my walking foot.
I enjoy all parts of it. Least is layering and beginning the basting mainly if it is queen size or larger. Best is piecing and I enjoy the binding process. I use the straight line method with the diamond criss cross pattern. Beautiful quilts. Thank you for sharing your tips and ideas.
Thank you Fallon for your tutorial on quilting your own quilt. I have numerous quilts I have pieced but my budget doesn't allow long arm quilting but now I shall try quilting them myself, thanks to you! Your colors and patterns are as beautiful as you are.
Oh my gosh! My hair was down past my waist...in everything! I got a buzz cut, maybe a little extreme, but I'm loving it. Did have to knit a beanie because it's cooler in this winter weather. Love your explanations and direction. Clear and simple❤
Great video. I watched quite a few of your videos while trying to quilt my own twin size quilt today.. I was looking for tips and yours were great. I was doing some of the same things already. Felt much better after watching you. Thanks.
My favorite part is the piecing and seeing the quilt come together. I make so many quilts that I bought a longarm 4 years ago so I could get them done. I used to quilt on my domestic machine but never enjoyed it.
I am so glad you made this video. It has given me ideas to perhaps complete my pile of quilt tops. I didn't realise how good line quilting would look on intricate stars and triangles. So big thanks from Australia at 7:30am.😊
I've tried ruler work with FMQ. I cannot do it well at all. BUT I never thought about using a ruler with the walking foot. I will definitely be trying it on my next quilting project. Thank you so much for such a great tip.
High-Five that intro to this video!!! I am with you when it comes to completely completing my quilts….love, Love, LOVE piecing! Great tips to try! I do love the result when I did crossing-hatching on 3 quilts on my domestic machine. Now I am trying to quilt one I have had for (embarrassed to say) 12 yrs hanging in a closet. lol. I want to try a different pattern as cross-hatchling was a job for me to set up. I tried painters tape and I tried using that “bar” that goes on the back of my walking foot, I still didn’t stay on the lines. Maybe I should look at your rulers. That looks pretty easy! Thank you for sharing
Don’t be embarrassed! You will get to that quilt when it’s the right time! I can’t get that dang bar to work for me either. It seems like it moves around. I can’t get it tight enough to stay in place.
well, I did it! I went to your online store and bought 3 of your rulers! lol I will let you know how they work for me. I saw Tiffany using one that helps her with cutting on her channel a while back so I thought, why not?
recently I stumbled across using Elmer's school glue to baste quilts......total game changer..now i actually want to completely finish a quilt..it doesn't break needles or gum them up and it's affordable and you glue your sandwich and their is no more fussing no pins no headaches.
I completely dread making a quilt sandwich, especially if I've had to piece a backing! Ohhh how I love 108s! I've done a wavy type matchstick on a table runner that came out awesome! I'm hand quilting a lap/twin quilt and a table runner with almost big stitch straight line quilting. Other than that, it's straight on my domestic, but trying to follow peaks and simple straight lines with a variation of widths and / or directions. But when I can afford it, I send them to a local longarm quilter! Thanks for the great video and book informatio!
The quilt sandwich is exhausting! It is also frustrating when I feel like I did a good job getting it nice and flat and even then it bubbles when I quilt it! I have two quilts I started hand quilting. I need to get those finished this year! We both have two of those projects too! How fun!
Have you ever used Elmer's School Glue to baste a quilt with? I used tiny drops of Elmer's School Glue to hold the layers together (and my iron to speed up the drying) on my last quilting project. I did use a few quilting safety pins to make sure it stayed together along the borders. After the binding was finished, I washed the quilt. The glue washed out. It was so much easier; and, I didn't get cut by pins.
This process is portrayed well. Its not just awkward but tiring on the arms. However, thats how it goes! Ive moved fom making large uilts ti making mini quiltetttes. These are more challenging as far as the piecing goes, which is goid at raising ones game. Quilting is then another challenge in other ways! 😅 But this us why I do it..to meet challenges while creating beautiful things. As do all patchworkers and quilters! Great videoexpressing a lot of what lies behind the quilts we make add give away. Or sell, in some cases. Even leaving our quilts to those working the large longarms requires their very different skills that need to be acknowledged. Thank you for this video.
Excellent video, thanks for sharing. I prefer to quilt by hand as I only make small things. Now, you just need to do all the binding! I'd do it for you if we lived closer! ❤👍from Somerset UK
I have quilted most of my pieces with straight lines using walking foot and the little bar that you push into it's side. The bar rides along your last line and fits on both sides of your foot. I've also used a wavy line on my small Brother (computer) machine. My fav part though is piecing the top!
Thank you for such a great tutorial and sharing your experience and thoughts. A couple of your quilts have given me some inspiration on how to use some of my fabrics. ❤
My go to is stitch in the ditch I’ve used painters tape for cross hatch I’ve also have used chalk roller do my version of candle stick stitch inside shapes free motion on larger quilts is a nightmare with small throat space love your tips. My favorite part of quilting is designing patterns picking out fabric and piecing them together the yucky part is pinning my sandwich together lol😅
I really enjoyed this video and the different methods to use on a domestic machine. I have been doing straight line quilting "in the ditch" mostly so I appreciated you sharing these. I haven't ever used a free motion foot. I need to try it out. The feet are expensive, too. I tried to wave with a regular foot on just a baby blanket (not pieced) and it looked ok for my first try with a regular foot. Im looking forward to trying something you shared. Thanks again!
You are so right, all of the foot add ons for sewing machines are so expensive! I sometimes use my regular foot to quilt too. It gets the job done when needed!
Great ideas and timely. Working on a crib quilt and couldn't decide how to quilt it (and it is not my favorite part of the process either). Thanks for taking some of the sting out of non-fun part (for some of us) of making our quilts. Your quilts look absolutely lovely.
Hey, Fallon! Perfect timing! I’m looking for options for my stack of quilt sandwiches. I love these! The pattern on the star quilt will be perfect for a disappearing hourglass quilt that I’m making for my local hospice. I need to minimize quitting since they’ve asked for a lightweight quilt. It will add interest without the added weight. Using the side of the walking foot with the ruler is a great idea! Especially with low shank machines-I have some rulers that are too thick for Ooooh…that pinwheel quilt would be perfect for a kids quilt that I want to make with a my bundle of Tula’s True Colours Tiny Coordinates for our hospital’s fundraising auction. ANY suggestion re a colour to use for the pinwheels?❓❓I’m considering a neutral-perhaps a medium grey? I’ve seen the WALK book, but haven’t been able to see one in person to see how helpful it would be. I might have to consider it again. Oops! Sorry for the long comment. You can see why I don’t often make comments-I tend to overdo it! Would you believe that I actually edited this down?! 😂🤣😂 Thank you, and stay we!l! Muskoka ON 🇨🇦
I really like the wavy line quilting technique and use it especially on bigger quilts. I do have problems with forgetting which direction I was heading in when I need to stop to adjust my quilt. So sometimes my wavy lines are a bit bumpier than I would like! Thanks for all these great ideas which I will try.
I hear you on the longarmer piece…it could add up! I’m trying to get mine done this year too, but am paralyzed with ideas. This is helpful, even for quilting on my longarm!
I tend to like the creation and piecing process as well. I can go through that part of the process pretty fast. I'm more than happy to take it to a quilter. However, 2024 is a different year and I need to cut back on my quilting budget so I'm going to have to learn to quilt some of my larger projects. I don't mind quilting table runners or table squares which I typically use the straight line method varying spacing. I love the clean look it gives them. Being a novice at actually quilting my projects, I would have liked to hear about the set up, i.e. stitch length, type of thread, sandwiching / basting a larger quilt. Fallon, loved these easy quilting designs! It gives me confidence to do my own.
This was great! THANK YOU VERY MUCH!! I too cannot afford to pay a long armer. Even though I REALLY want to. The one I learned first and is the easiest for me is a STRAIGHT STITCH 1/4" away from my seam lines on both sides. I've done it on a handful of quilt tops and small projects and looks very nice. I have a 16" block that I just finished. I think I will use your "V" technique on that one. Just to practice on. 😉 And I have done the wavy lines only one time. That too was also very nice quilting and very fun to do so.
Quilting is definitely not my favorite part of quilting either. I always end up with a few pleats on the front and the back. No matter how much I flatten and pin and spray baste, I still end up with pleats. You've done a great job with your quilts though!!!! Keep going. You will be done soon!
Fallon, love LOVE your ideas for quilting your own projects. I've just done straight lines or meander stitch on my small things. The throw quilts are just sitting in a large basket... just waiting for me 🙄
I love quilting using the wavy line stitch on my quilt going diagonally. The design on the back is really neat. One thing to think about with some of the techniques you use on your smaller quilts is to use them on quilts with bigger blocks as quilt as you go. Then join blocks together after quilting.
For straight line quilting, I’ve used the guide bar that came with my walking foot. Free motion has been my downfall. I have a hard time getting my stitches the same size. I have a bunch of quilt tops that need quilting. I will pay the longarmer for the queen and king size, but it’s time for me to finish these throw size quilts. Next question, what am I going to do with all these quilts!
My favorite part:
Buying fabric! ❤❤❤

Do you make your own spray by using Elmers glue? Or do you have another method?
@sewbeitquilts Chatterbox Quilts on youtube. "Make Quilt Basting Spray" is the name of the video. I have used washable school glue also. When I used the school blue I only quilted a sample and then I washed and dried it to see how well I would like it and it turned out well also. I think the homemade spray base is more economical and it is easy to apply. One recipe was enough for a queen size quilt and a thirty" by forty" wall hanging.
I loved it when you compared a quilting style as “yummy”! Very cute!
It sure just popped out! Lol!
That sure is me! Lol!
Thank you!
Hair everywhere and on everything! Even if I wear my hair up it still manages to get on my quilts! lol
You’re welcome and happy sewing!
After seeing your slide lock rulers, I jumped over to your video showing the manufacturing process. Goodness me, they will help me so much in getting straight cuts. Amazing. I bought the bundle. Thank you! 😘
Thank you! You will love them! They help me so much!
My favorite part is being finished so I can start another one.
Yelp!!! Same here.
I’m with you on your favourite and least favourite parts of the process. This was really helpful! Thanks
I love these line quilting ideas. Thank you. I like to use the serpentine stitch on my machine to quilt wavy lines.
I love that! I’m sure it turns out beautiful each time!
Di
Thank you Di! I am often too hard on myself with free motion quilting!
Thank you Fallon! ❤ I particularly enjoyed the angled quilting in your star quilt. Typically I do swirly spirals in FMQ but I’m about to give ruler quilting a try. Maybe with a walking foot as you demonstrated.
Very enjoyable video!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Congratulations on finishing your first large quilt!
I just found this channel! I am like you when it comes to quilting. Lots of tops and none completed. I do a lot of free motion quilting just to get them done when someone wants one. lol😂
Sounds like we're part of the same quilting club - the "Lots of Tops, None Completed" club! Let's motivate each other to finish those projects.
I SO agree with you about expense of long arm quilting. I wish I could afford that too, but it is prohibitive. Thank you for sharing your ideas.
You’re a finisher. That’s great that you love the end. I love piecing and binding. Quilting is hard to wrestle a large lap quilt on my domestic.
Thanks.
Glad it was helpful!
Right there with ya. Love tops cannot stand putting them together. The quilting to me is so hard on larger than baby quilts
I don’t really enjoy quilting but have to finish up some tops I’ve pieced together. Thanks for the ideas.
You are so welcome!
My favorite part is the piecing and seeing the quilt come together. I make so many quilts that I bought a longarm 4 years ago so I could get them done. I used to quilt on my domestic machine but never enjoyed it.
It can be a struggle with larger quilts! I hope to one day own a longarm!
I am so glad you made this video. It has given me ideas to perhaps complete my pile of quilt tops. I didn't realise how good line quilting would look on intricate stars and triangles. So big thanks from Australia at 7:30am.😊
I love choosing the fabrics along with piecing the top watching everything come together 😍
Choosing the fabric is absolutely the best!
I've tried ruler work with FMQ. I cannot do it well at all. BUT I never thought about using a ruler with the walking foot. I will definitely be trying it on my next quilting project. Thank you so much for such a great tip.
Oh I love the V’s
I’m so excited your name is Fallon… my maiden name is Fallon and I love it!!! You had me hooked at Fallon and quilts lol
That would even make a cute baby quilt! The back looks really neat also .
recently I stumbled across using Elmer's school glue to baste quilts......total game changer..now i actually want to completely finish a quilt..it doesn't break needles or gum them up and it's affordable and you glue your sandwich and their is no more fussing no pins no headaches.
How fun!
It is really interesting to me how simply varying the spacing on straight line quilting can add such depth to a quilt.
I haven’t used Elmer’s glue but I do want to try it!
I truly enjoy every step, but my favorite part by a small margin is quilting the sandwich. Loved your ideas!
Excellent video, thanks for sharing. I prefer to quilt by hand as I only make small things. Now, you just need to do all the binding! I'd do it for you if we lived closer! ❤👍from Somerset UK
Thank you! I did get the binding added on to all of them! So happy to have them all finished.
I ❤ cutting and piecing.
Me too!!
I have quilted most of my pieces with straight lines using walking foot and the little bar that you push into it's side. The bar rides along your last line and fits on both sides of your foot. I've also used a wavy line on my small Brother (computer) machine. My fav part though is piecing the top!
I can’t get the bar to work on my machine. I can’t get it tight enough so that it doesn’t move around. Any tips?
Thank you for such a great tutorial and sharing your experience and thoughts. A couple of your quilts have given me some inspiration on how to use some of my fabrics. ❤
Glad it was helpful!
I love using chalk rollers too! Basting is such a pain! I agree!
Really like the fabrics in your first quilt.
Thank you! That color scheme was out of my comfort zone but it is one of my favorite quilts!
These are such beautiful simple designs to get your quilting done ♥️ you have inspired me
Thank you!
Thanks for sharing your expertise to a beginner like me! It is getting fun every day! Am looking for my third project now! Any suggestions? Thanks!
I have a few great beginner friendly quilt patterns on my channel!
I love straight line or wavy line quilting!
That's great to hear! Both straight line and wavy line quilting can create such beautiful and unique designs.
Great ideas and timely. Working on a crib quilt and couldn't decide how to quilt it (and it is not my favorite part of the process either). Thanks for taking some of the sting out of non-fun part (for some of us) of making our quilts. Your quilts look absolutely lovely.
Thank you so much! I’m so glad you found the video helpful!
Especially with low shank machines-I have some rulers that are too thick for
Ooooh…that pinwheel quilt would be perfect for a kids quilt that I want to make with a my bundle of Tula’s True Colours Tiny Coordinates for our hospital’s fundraising auction.
Thank you, and stay we!l!

I really like the wavy line quilting technique and use it especially on bigger quilts. I do have problems with forgetting which direction I was heading in when I need to stop to adjust my quilt. So sometimes my wavy lines are a bit bumpier than I would like! Thanks for all these great ideas which I will try.
Great video Fallon. My favorite part is piecing and making the top. I do quilt some of the smaller ones ones. Thanks for the tips!
You're welcome! Thank you for watching!
I took your dedicated spool for bobbin winding idea. It's great.
Isn’t it! My goodness it is so nice to not have to rethread every time!
??? I missed that one. What's the reference?
Thank you for this tutorial.
You are welcome!
I hear you on the longarmer piece…it could add up! I’m trying to get mine done this year too, but am paralyzed with ideas. This is helpful, even for quilting on my longarm!
It’s so hard to come up with quilting ideas! I envy the quilters who can see the vision and details on each quilt!
I think in Piecing. I don't think in Quilting. These lines ideas take away the Thinking blocks!!
Love these ideas. I'm definitely a "linear" person (free motion scares me). Can't wait to try your ruler instead of the tape I usually use.
It’s really hard for me to come up with free motion designs. I am trying to practice but I get paralyzed trying to think of a design for the quilt.
Great ideas. I loved the Vs and the spiral. Can’t wait to try them out. I’ll definitely need to order the ruler also. Thanks for this video.
I’m glad you enjoyed the video!
Thank you for these ideas! So beautifully simple ❤
You are so welcome!
Great video. Would have loved to see the back of all of them, but especially the wavy one.
Sorry! On some the thread blends so much it was hard to see. Next time I show quilting I will show both sides either way! Thanks for watching.
Quilting is definitely not my favorite part of quilting either. I always end up with a few pleats on the front and the back. No matter how much I flatten and pin and spray baste, I still end up with pleats. You've done a great job with your quilts though!!!! Keep going. You will be done soon!
Yes! Those pleats happen to me sometimes too! I think they aren’t as noticeable after washing… sometimes! If they aren’t too bad at least.
All good quilting patterns, thank you Fallon
Thank you Debee!
Thank you for the good advise.
Always here to drop some knowledge bombs! 😉
These are super ideas, Fallon; thank you! I have both Jacquie Gering's books, and I have found them very helpful as well. Great video!
You are so welcome! I need to get her second book! I didn’t know there was one until it was mentioned in the comments!
