    Hi Tiago, I think you have forgotten one of the most important differences: the kind of floor you are going to skate on. In my opinion, triskates are much more suitable for skating on a rugged floor like streets, whereas 4 wheels are better for smooth floors because they are more stable. If you want to do urban skate on your town's streets and pavements triskates are recommended. But it's true, they are a little more difficult to handle, so you must have a little experience.

      I live in a city (italy) where we don't have a street that isn't ruined or that doesen't go up and down
      And we all tried triskates (we are experienced enough) but it really didn't go well. I think that it can be dangerous triskating in not-so-perfect street and cities that are not flat

    Hi Tiago, I'm 61 yrs old, just a baby after reading UP's comment below (!)...but I just wanted to say all your advice has helped me a lot...been on my 'full rocker' 4 wheel 72/76mm Chinese copy skates just 2 days, they are not too bad...a bit tight perhaps, but I'm rolling, albeit pretty slowly, ha ha. Taking it slowly, a real beginner. I had perhaps 15 hours 20 years ago on ice skates, and so I'm starting from scratch on blades essentially. So far so good....my wheels light up (they work like a light brake) which helps moderate my speed, so looks great and keeps me sloooooow. Really good, wise advice from Tiago I think. Tri skates with bigger wheels (eg 110, 125) are SO much faster that 4x80 that skills such as stopping and turning are more critical. 4x80 (or smaller) are slower and more stable, hence more forgiving.
    However, once you get good on 4x80 then tri skates are a really good option for street skating because of their higher speed. Less energy needed to go places, and better over bumps and uneven surfaces because of the larger wheels.
    So my view is start with 4x80 then move to 3x100 or 3x110 when you are able to skate fairly well (particularly speed control and stopping)!

    Totally agree that small 4 wheels setup is the best to learn basic skills, but I reckon 100-110mm Trinity 3 wheels setup has no significant difference in control, and rather better to learn correct edge control (which edge you are on).

    • @buca669
      @buca669 6 років тому +2

      You're right I changed from 4x90 UFS to 3x125 trinity lately, the 3 wheel setup is great in manouverability (short frame) on the middle pivot wheel. E.g. for me, trying slides is much easier on 3skates. As Ricardo Lino said few months ago, there is a big difference in the leverage with big wheels as the feet are higher above ground. After few months I still struggle with boot lacing and top buckle on my Nexts, it's never the same, sometimes very bad for handling and I get blisters and bruises from the boot after longer ride.
      Second thing is inertia - 4x90 is slower at similar pace but it reacts instantly to change of pace, with 3x125 setup you have to "plan in advance" accordingly. When an uphill part comes, it's better to change pace few seconds before, otherwise it is quite hard to get the speed back. Same with starts, to get similar speed after few strides, you have to push harder. On the downhills (I do only slight slopes) with triskates I need to decelerate earlier as they keep the speed once they got fast-but I keep trying slides that slow down quickly that makes the ride generally faster ;-) But the speed is great even on that short frame...

  • @igors634
    @igors634 Рік тому +2

    My 5 cents. Firstly, 3 wheels are worse for me because the taller wheels put more strain on my joints. I moved back from 3x110mm to 4x80mm coz I started to feel pain in my knees. Secondly, 4 wheels ride more smoothly on different surfaces whereas 3 wheels a more demanding on the quality of the surface. And I did not notice any speed improvement whereas the maneuvrability suffered quite a bit.

    This might not be super helpful to beginners, but here's my skate wheel progression. I just bought a pair of tris about a week ago now (the latest Seba High Light skates fit my wide/weird foot perfectly) and I instantly absolutely loved them. They're already 3 x 100 for my foot length, but I can go up to 110 if I'm keen. This is after years of only having been on 4 wheels daily in my early teens to a big gap of not skating in between - about 15 years I'd say. Starting back again on 4 wheels recently with probably a solid year mostly practicing skills on those. Had a few months or so 'off' - partly because my skates didn't really fit anymore and have just now upgraded(?) to three wheels. I had imagined I'd be unstable, but I found them really sturdy, comfortable, maneuverable and was super surprised. Though I wasn't a complete beginner, I'm quite good at not falling and have naturally good balance. All contirbuting factors I'm sure. I don't think that would have been the case if I used tris from the start (though I'm sure they weren't available back then).

    I used to inline speed skate and I’m just now getting back into it. When I used to skate, 3 wheels were basically just for kids but now it’s used for adult marathons and such. So I’ve been debating building a 3 or 4 wheel speed skate but I think I’m still gonna stick with 4x110. Thanks for the info!

    It seems like no one addresses the people who have mastered every skate we’ve encountered so far and are simply anxious to do the same here. I could just be missing it, but so far “new to inline skating” seems to be used synonymously with “new to skating” - period. Even better than just an acknowledgement that “beginner” might not mean the same thing to everyone, would be addressing it head on and using those comparisons - which would be so helpful to those of us who love skating and can’t wait to kick ass w/ inline skates like we have w/ ice and roller skates - to better aim us toward a good starting place. Like, “if you’re already comfortable with ice skating you might not need to worry so much about x and y, but z will be a new experience and might be easier with ______” Or: “If you’re the roller derby type, you should have no trouble at all with A, but B may take some getting used to.” (Again, I haven’t combed the interwebz, and I strongly suspect that these videos do exist, but they’re well buried.)
    It’s just a thought.
    Or, who knows, maybe it’s actually a desperate scream into the void.
    🤷‍♀️
    I’m not picky; I’ll take whichever interpretation has the greatest chance of actually working.😉

    Hmmm, I would have like to try those 3 wheels skates, as I LOVE speed, I kinda regret not buying them right away, I did not trust them when I saw them and got myself a classic 4 * 90. I should have looked at this video FIRST... My next ones are gonna be 3 wheels for sure. It's gonna take some time to get the money though

      @@brayvdb2191 Yes, fast enough, 4 * 90 is a good mix of speed, stability, and durability, but it's not as fast as a 3 wheels. Anyway I realized soon enough I could already reach dangerous speed with 4 * 90. So... I do not regret after all

    I'm learning on 3x100 on a trinity mount. First couple weeks were SCARY with how quickly they can pick up speed on an incline. I have to say overall I'm happy to be learning on tri's because I figure when I get a 4x80 setup later, I'll just feel all the more stable and comfortable learning more advanced things at that point.

  • @JohnHarmon
    @JohnHarmon 5 років тому +4

    Due to an accident my legs are uneven (1.7 cm difference). Skating on my 4x80mm hurts my lower back after a while due to being uneven. I was thinking about doing 3 x 110 and 3 or 4 x96-ish on the other foot.... that should get me close enough; however, I wasn't sure if that would be screwy (don't care how it looks, just care about how maneuverability will be with mixed sized wheels). Any thoughts? I wanted to try larger wheels than 80s because the streets around me are pretty rough, and I am hoping to smooth things out a bit with larger wheels.

    • @alexvanhorssen7914
      @alexvanhorssen7914 5 років тому +1

      1.7 cm doesn't sound like a lot to me, can't you just build a little bit of wood or plastic between the shoe and the frame which holds the wheels?

I can keep my balance really well on a 4 weel of 76 mm and I also do some tricks such as step overs, going backwards, power stops and spins. I do value speed, but I wonder if you think I'll manage to keep my balance on 3 weels, preferably 110s

    I used to be a city skater since the late 80's (quads in my teenage years in the 70's). Had inline skates in the late 90's and very active, especially in the second half of the 90's into about 2005. The last skates that I still own are 5 wheels from Tecnica* as I was also a member of the Empire Skate Club in NYC. *HOWEVER*, I have not been on skates (except a few years ago, when I've tried to start again) on a serious, fit level since 2005.
    Now, 2020, I am out of shape and have ankles that are on the weaker side and tire fast and I really want to start up again, btw., I am 55 years old now. I don't want to use my 5 wheel speed-skates anymore, because they are just not as practical in the city and harder to maneuver, especially for roller dancing in Central Park (did that for years back then... super fun...!)
    I'll be considering to get the three wheel setup... and even I have to get slowly fit again and practice a lot... I feel that I should go with the new ones from Rollerblade... although the season is soon be over, yet I'll be able to train in Central Park (NYC), since I live in a 14 minutes walking distance).
    * Tecnica A lot of you young people in the US won't know that company (even people in local skate stores had now idea), but those were sold in the US with all kinds of 4 wheel and speed-skate 5 wheel models and setups. But, to clear this up... Tecnica is the parent company of Rollerblade! :)

    hi. i bought me a pair of powerslide tri-skates last year, about 37 years after i stopped rollerskating with quad skates. i've never used the 4-wheel inline skate yet, but i think the tri-skates would definitely take the bumps and inconsistencies on the road better. maybe i'm just biased because i'm having a ball with my tri-skates. at age 50, it's just great to be back!

When I first started skating on inlines they were 68 mm. I remember when we went to 72 and when 80'sx5 came out they blew my mind. Now I'm on 110x4 looking at 125x3 with 135's in pre-production. The one thing I learned with over 30 years experience skating is if you don't like modern setups just wait a year. It will completely change.

      Mine, I'm 34. I usually take care of a lot of things and have most things from even middle school.
      My middle school blades, I barely used. So they sat in closet. After a few moves and cellars, and storage etc. The screws became all rusted and such. Mixed with me never really cleaning it whenever I last used it.
      Instead of fixing/replacing/repair etc..i just said something like "water ruined my skates"

    Hello Tiago!. Gabriel here. Huh, well, I'm looking for new skates. I like speed skating but I would like to try new things like slalom/ freestyle. The problem is that I don't want to spend in 2 pairs, so, is there a hybrid between speed skate and a slalom skate?

      I know this was a while ago but if you are starting stuff like freestyle and slaloms then I would suggest starting with 4 wheel inline skates around 4x76 or 4x80 and then maybe if you still want to then maybe get the triskates because I know from personal experience that you can still go fast in 4 wheel skates because I have 4x76 in my blades and I can get up to around 30-35 mph on a slight hill
