In my opinion, triskates are much more suitable for skating on a rugged floor like streets, whereas 4 wheels are better for smooth floors because they are more stable. Thanks for this. I want to get back into skating after many years, and like the idea of tri skates for the rough roads in my area, but was worried about all the folks warning against them for beginners. It’s good to know other old fogies have managed jumping back in with tris.
Really good, wise advice from Tiago I think. Tri skates with bigger wheels (eg 110, 125) are SO much faster that 4x80 that skills such as stopping and turning are more critical. 4x80 (or smaller) are slower and more stable, hence more forgiving. However, once you get good on 4x80 then tri skates are a really good option for street skating because of their higher speed. Less energy needed to go places, and better over bumps and uneven surfaces because of the larger wheels. So my view is start with 4x80 then move to 3x100 or 3x110 when you are able to skate fairly well (particularly speed control and stopping)!
After this Covid-19 lockdown is lifted I've decided I'm going to buy some In-line skates for getting around my home-town. As a complete beginner this video was actully really helpful! I'm 6" and would like a bit of speed as well as maneuverability. What I've taken from this video, 4 wheels around 90mm would be the best place to start.
After probably more than 15 years since last time I went skating (I'm 34 now), yesterday I found my inline skates at my parents house. I was surprised how quick I was back on the wheels and especially how quick the muscle memory came back again! No big problem at all, just a bit trying and adjusting, listening to what my body says, and then I found myself skating in the streets around the village here for one hour and around 15 kilometres. That was a big surprise, and a lot of fun too! 🙂
Totally agree that small 4 wheels setup is the best to learn basic skills, but I reckon 100-110mm Trinity 3 wheels setup has no significant difference in control, and rather better to learn correct edge control (which edge you are on).
You're right I changed from 4x90 UFS to 3x125 trinity lately, the 3 wheel setup is great in manouverability (short frame) on the middle pivot wheel. E.g. for me, trying slides is much easier on 3skates. As Ricardo Lino said few months ago, there is a big difference in the leverage with big wheels as the feet are higher above ground. After few months I still struggle with boot lacing and top buckle on my Nexts, it's never the same, sometimes very bad for handling and I get blisters and bruises from the boot after longer ride. Second thing is inertia - 4x90 is slower at similar pace but it reacts instantly to change of pace, with 3x125 setup you have to "plan in advance" accordingly. When an uphill part comes, it's better to change pace few seconds before, otherwise it is quite hard to get the speed back. Same with starts, to get similar speed after few strides, you have to push harder. On the downhills (I do only slight slopes) with triskates I need to decelerate earlier as they keep the speed once they got fast-but I keep trying slides that slow down quickly that makes the ride generally faster ;-) But the speed is great even on that short frame...
My 5 cents. Firstly, 3 wheels are worse for me because the taller wheels put more strain on my joints. I moved back from 3x110mm to 4x80mm coz I started to feel pain in my knees. Secondly, 4 wheels ride more smoothly on different surfaces whereas 3 wheels a more demanding on the quality of the surface. And I did not notice any speed improvement whereas the maneuvrability suffered quite a bit.
As someone inexperienced hearing this explanation for the first time, i found this video super informative and easy to understand. Liked and subscribed. Wish me luck with my new 80s
This might not be super helpful to beginners, but here's my skate wheel progression. I just bought a pair of tris about a week ago now (the latest Seba High Light skates fit my wide/weird foot perfectly) and I instantly absolutely loved them. They're already 3 x 100 for my foot length, but I can go up to 110 if I'm keen. This is after years of only having been on 4 wheels daily in my early teens to a big gap of not skating in between - about 15 years I'd say. Starting back again on 4 wheels recently with probably a solid year mostly practicing skills on those. Had a few months or so 'off' - partly because my skates didn't really fit anymore and have just now upgraded(?) to three wheels. I had imagined I'd be unstable, but I found them really sturdy, comfortable, maneuverable and was super surprised. Though I wasn't a complete beginner, I'm quite good at not falling and have naturally good balance. All contirbuting factors I'm sure. I don't think that would have been the case if I used tris from the start (though I'm sure they weren't available back then).
I think I'm gonna buy tri skates, I've been skating since I was a kid but it's been a few years now. I never learned stops or tricks but I think I can manage and learn especially since tri skates are good for rough terrain which is better. 👍
I used to inline speed skate and I’m just now getting back into it. When I used to skate, 3 wheels were basically just for kids but now it’s used for adult marathons and such. So I’ve been debating building a 3 or 4 wheel speed skate but I think I’m still gonna stick with 4x110. Thanks for the info!
my dream skates are triskates. Specifically the powerslide Swells. I just like how they look and how many colors they come in. However i feel like triskate wheels are going to be pricey $$$. but alot of triskates look really fashionable
It seems like no one addresses the people who have mastered every skate we’ve encountered so far and are simply anxious to do the same here. I could just be missing it, but so far “new to inline skating” seems to be used synonymously with “new to skating” - period. Even better than just an acknowledgement that “beginner” might not mean the same thing to everyone, would be addressing it head on and using those comparisons - which would be so helpful to those of us who love skating and can’t wait to kick ass w/ inline skates like we have w/ ice and roller skates - to better aim us toward a good starting place. Like, “if you’re already comfortable with ice skating you might not need to worry so much about x and y, but z will be a new experience and might be easier with ______” Or: “If you’re the roller derby type, you should have no trouble at all with A, but B may take some getting used to.” (Again, I haven’t combed the interwebz, and I strongly suspect that these videos do exist, but they’re well buried.) It’s just a thought. Or, who knows, maybe it’s actually a desperate scream into the void. 🤷♀️ I’m not picky; I’ll take whichever interpretation has the greatest chance of actually working.😉
Hmmm, I would have like to try those 3 wheels skates, as I LOVE speed, I kinda regret not buying them right away, I did not trust them when I saw them and got myself a classic 4 * 90. I should have looked at this video FIRST... My next ones are gonna be 3 wheels for sure. It's gonna take some time to get the money though
@@brayvdb2191 Yes, fast enough, 4 * 90 is a good mix of speed, stability, and durability, but it's not as fast as a 3 wheels. Anyway I realized soon enough I could already reach dangerous speed with 4 * 90. So... I do not regret after all
I'm learning on 3x100 on a trinity mount. First couple weeks were SCARY with how quickly they can pick up speed on an incline. I have to say overall I'm happy to be learning on tri's because I figure when I get a 4x80 setup later, I'll just feel all the more stable and comfortable learning more advanced things at that point.
Due to an accident my legs are uneven (1.7 cm difference). Skating on my 4x80mm hurts my lower back after a while due to being uneven. I was thinking about doing 3 x 110 and 3 or 4 x96-ish on the other foot.... that should get me close enough; however, I wasn't sure if that would be screwy (don't care how it looks, just care about how maneuverability will be with mixed sized wheels). Any thoughts? I wanted to try larger wheels than 80s because the streets around me are pretty rough, and I am hoping to smooth things out a bit with larger wheels.
Thanks dude. I’ve been off skates for about 10 yrs and I was pretty good killing hills. Fast forward I’m now 38 and have 3 kiddos and this helped me decide. Gonna stick to 4 wheels for now and then upgrade.
I concur, I tried 3 wheel frames and it didn't work for me, Yes I had fun on them, they were fast, and smooth. But I felt my self and my pears could also see that I skated more fluid and more professionally with 4 wheels.
Back in the day, I played ice hockey here in South Africa, but after the ice rink to close down, they wanted to continue hockey with roller skates. And after discovering you can go much further away with roller skates is a great motivation to get a pair.
Hi! I consider myself a mediocre skater, so I was wondering which ones would be better. I can keep my balance really well on a 4 weel of 76 mm and I also do some tricks such as step overs, going backwards, power stops and spins. I do value speed, but I wonder if you think I'll manage to keep my balance on 3 weels, preferably 110s
Back when I figure skated, I used roller blades with 4 wheels, but after roller derby I've been using my quads since. i wanted to get some roller blades to see if they'd be better for street skating.....I had no idea they made them with 3 wheels! 😂. Thank you for the insight

I used to be a city skater since the late 80's (quads in my teenage years in the 70's). Had inline skates in the late 90's and very active, especially in the second half of the 90's into about 2005. The last skates that I still own are 5 wheels from Tecnica* as I was also a member of the Empire Skate Club in NYC. *HOWEVER*, I have not been on skates (except a few years ago, when I've tried to start again) on a serious, fit level since 2005. Now, 2020, I am out of shape and have ankles that are on the weaker side and tire fast and I really want to start up again, btw., I am 55 years old now. I don't want to use my 5 wheel speed-skates anymore, because they are just not as practical in the city and harder to maneuver, especially for roller dancing in Central Park (did that for years back then... super fun...!) I'll be considering to get the three wheel setup... and even I have to get slowly fit again and practice a lot... I feel that I should go with the new ones from Rollerblade... although the season is soon be over, yet I'll be able to train in Central Park (NYC), since I live in a 14 minutes walking distance). * Tecnica A lot of you young people in the US won't know that company (even people in local skate stores had now idea), but those were sold in the US with all kinds of 4 wheel and speed-skate 5 wheel models and setups. But, to clear this up... Tecnica is the parent company of Rollerblade! :)
hi. i bought me a pair of powerslide tri-skates last year, about 37 years after i stopped rollerskating with quad skates. i've never used the 4-wheel inline skate yet, but i think the tri-skates would definitely take the bumps and inconsistencies on the road better. maybe i'm just biased because i'm having a ball with my tri-skates. at age 50, it's just great to be back!
Levels of inline skater: Noob level - 4 wheels City pro level - 3 wheels Master level - 2 wheels Demi-god level - 1 wheel Neo from the matrix level - what if I told you there is no wheel?
You're right, I started with 3x110 setup, learned the basics, skate on the streets, slides and stops. 4 years later I bought my first 4x80 and wow!!! I should have started with this setup first.
I'm a Bont and Simmons guy myself. Actually Dave Simmons lives next to me so it's kind of awesome having the best boot maker in the world local. When I first started skating on inlines they were 68 mm. I remember when we went to 72 and when 80'sx5 came out they blew my mind. Now I'm on 110x4 looking at 125x3 with 135's in pre-production. The one thing I learned with over 30 years experience skating is if you don't like modern setups just wait a year. It will completely change.
Those skates are beautiful mine got ruined by water and I haven't been able to skate for 3 months. I'm so sad about it. I'm trying to save to try and buy a pair.
@Derek Simmons probably bad explanation. Mine, I'm 34. I usually take care of a lot of things and have most things from even middle school. My middle school blades, I barely used. So they sat in closet. After a few moves and cellars, and storage etc. The screws became all rusted and such. Mixed with me never really cleaning it whenever I last used it. Instead of fixing/replacing/repair etc..i just said something like "water ruined my skates"
Just found your channel, so entertaining and informative. Thinking of giving inline skating a go, last time I touched a pair of skates I was about 7. I'm 23 now and im fairly decent at ice skating with hockey skates. Thanks for giving me some info on buying my first pair!
Hello Tiago!. Gabriel here. Huh, well, I'm looking for new skates. I like speed skating but I would like to try new things like slalom/ freestyle. The problem is that I don't want to spend in 2 pairs, so, is there a hybrid between speed skate and a slalom skate? Those triskates from the video could be useful for what I want?
I know this was a while ago but if you are starting stuff like freestyle and slaloms then I would suggest starting with 4 wheel inline skates around 4x76 or 4x80 and then maybe if you still want to then maybe get the triskates because I know from personal experience that you can still go fast in 4 wheel skates because I have 4x76 in my blades and I can get up to around 30-35 mph on a slight hill
Just watched the Inline Skates video by Mike Shake. Was thinking of getting skates and this popped up. I'll definitely be getting 4×80s sometime this year.
Thank you for the video. I’ll definitely start with the 4 wheels as you’ve suggested. But for sure I’ll graduate to the 3 wheel skates. I used to skate as a kid, both skate board and roller skates. So looking forward to this again!!

Just a beginner, few days on skates, but I like your reasoning. Glad I got 4 x 80's
Thanks man
Thank you, this helped with my decision to not buy three wheeled skates as I am a casual skater, I just like going faster
I used to own 4 big wheels when I was a kid. I missed skating so much T-T I need to practice again before trying a 3 wheels
i’ve been roller skating since i could walk but i’ve never heard of 2,3,5, or 6 skates before 😂
Lol me too never heard of a difference between the amount of wheels
and you are only 12?
@@GGGamesBA ?
After many frames and going back and forth between tri skates and 4 wheels I’ve found my self back on 4x80 and I’m loving it.
Well said.
As someone inexperienced hearing this explanation for the first time, i found this video super informative and easy to understand. Liked and subscribed. Wish me luck with my new 80s
The last time I drove inline skates was 5 years ago. Why am I watching this? 😂ok UA-cam algorithm
I've never done it so...
15ish years here... yet I’m still watchin’ :)
10 years here bro
You are watching it only because you have clicked on it

I literally just got sent my tri-wheel skates and I’m a beginner and now I’m just wondering if I should return it or not
What did you do ? Am a beginner too and i am confused.
OMG, I needed this video ... Thanks man
you're welcome! 😁
Always a pleasure to watch your videos they make me want to go out straight after and skate.
I started 4days ago and i love it sooooo mutch i never wanr to ride my skateboard again this feels mutch more contebol but i mostely ride skatepark
Thanks bro! People like you and Bill Stoppard, really make me want to pick up inline skating again. I'm going to order a pair soon
my dream skates are triskates. Specifically the powerslide Swells. I just like how they look and how many colors they come in. However i feel like triskate wheels are going to be pricey $$$. but alot of triskates look really fashionable
Jokerr Fox The swells sure look nice! specially the new 2019 version :) this also means that the 2018 versions will be cheaper :)
Like, “if you’re already comfortable with ice skating you might not need to worry so much about x and y, but z will be a new experience and might be easier with ______” Or: “If you’re the roller derby type, you should have no trouble at all with A, but B may take some getting used to.” (Again, I haven’t combed the interwebz, and I strongly suspect that these videos do exist, but they’re well buried.)
It’s just a thought.
Or, who knows, maybe it’s actually a desperate scream into the void.
🤷♀️
I’m not picky; I’ll take whichever interpretation has the greatest chance of actually working.😉
Isn't 4x90 pretty fast as well?
@@brayvdb2191 Yes, fast enough, 4 * 90 is a good mix of speed, stability, and durability, but it's not as fast as a 3 wheels. Anyway I realized soon enough I could already reach dangerous speed with 4 * 90. So... I do not regret after all
I always skated a lot when I was younger and wanna start doing it again now I know what to buy thank you so much!
Same 🐻 ✌️ it's a good fitness experience and that's fun gotta return to it now at age 25 lol
Nice video. Good points. Great work going over the other setups Tiago!
Four wheels are definitely best for beginners in my perspective.
The Inline Guy Thank you! :)
1.7 cm doesn't sound like a lot to me, can't you just build a little bit of wood or plastic between the shoe and the frame which holds the wheels?
Thanks dude. I’ve been off skates for about 10 yrs and I was pretty good killing hills. Fast forward I’m now 38 and have 3 kiddos and this helped me decide. Gonna stick to 4 wheels for now and then upgrade.
I just ordered K2 BOA with 84mm wheals, sounds like a win size )
I just ordered those, how are they
I haven't skated in a wheel nor had I heard of the triskates, and this was super useful in helping me decide! Thanks for the video!
Nice video!!!!! I prefer 4 wheels and i skate for 7 years!!!!!
I first started roller skating when I was 5 and when I was 8-9 I started roller blades and I am still on roller blades. I am 13 now☺
Mr. Witch I’m 13 too! What all stuff can you do? I’m not that great. I’m mean I’m not wiping out all the time or anything but I can’t really do many tricks or anything
Never stop! I started at 5 and I’m 34 and I am the most fit I have ever been in My life and I have always been fit.
This guy is the best I love these videos cause he is so positive and honest
I can't even stop on pebbled asphalt road and look at you lol
Subscribed! I'm going to start skating in the spring time, I'm excited.
Could someone please tell me what are the skates in the thumbnail of this vid. The 4 wheels, that sleek thin boot. I'm in love😍
They are the Powerslide Hardcore Evo Trinity, they normally come with 3 wheels but I put a 4 wheeled frame on them, in a rockered setup! ✌🏼
@@TiagoInlineSkater
Whoa!! A reply from the man himself! I'm honored, bro. I'm just getting back into skating and.. Things have changed since I was 11😁. I'm having some difficulty though. Looking for skates online, and everything is sold out😬 Any advice? Thx again, Tiago. Love your channel!
I don't want to use my 5 wheel speed-skates anymore, because they are just not as practical in the city and harder to maneuver, especially for roller dancing in Central Park (did that for years back then... super fun...!)
I'll be considering to get the three wheel setup... and even I have to get slowly fit again and practice a lot...
Still waiting for 2 110mm wheels street skates .
kore prod I have a 2x150 offroad setup 😆
hi. i bought me a pair of powerslide tri-skates last year, about 37 years after i stopped rollerskating with quad skates. i've never used the 4-wheel inline skate yet, but i think the tri-skates would definitely take the bumps and inconsistencies on the road better. maybe i'm just biased because i'm having a ball with my tri-skates. at age 50, it's just great to be back!
Anyone else a quad skater that still watches tiago?
Axtra, I skate on everything, but originally I'm a quad skater. If you can skate one you can skate the other!
I enjoy quads, but that doesnt mean I'm good at them
Thanks man that was extremely useful and your presentation is entertaining and charismatic.
Levels of inline skater:
Noob level - 4 wheels
City pro level - 3 wheels
Master level - 2 wheels
Demi-god level - 1 wheel
Neo from the matrix level - what if I told you there is no wheel?
Thank you very much for this video Tiago! Congratulations from Brazil!
I love tri wheel skates. I'm never going back
You're right, I started with 3x110 setup, learned the basics, skate on the streets, slides and stops. 4 years later I bought my first 4x80 and wow!!! I should have started with this setup first.
Real informative and amazing clips. Your sense of balance is amazing man. keep up the groove !
I used quads when i was 4-15 now a little older. Thinking if i should get some inlines mhmm
I used to have rollerskates, then my first blades, 4x80mm, then I had 4x100mm now I ordered 3x110mm! Very excited!
i'm satified with my 3 wheel,
my favourite 3x125.
Absolutely, but with trinity mount.
same here keeping it safe
I'm a Bont and Simmons guy myself. Actually Dave Simmons lives next to me so it's kind of awesome having the best boot maker in the world local. When I first started skating on inlines they were 68 mm. I remember when we went to 72 and when 80'sx5 came out they blew my mind. Now I'm on 110x4 looking at 125x3 with 135's in pre-production. The one thing I learned with over 30 years experience skating is if you don't like modern setups just wait a year. It will completely change.
coming from Aggressive Inline skating my wheels down to the core, 4x80mm felt like i had turbos on my frames.
Like wise. By the way i love your username lol
Love your charisma man! Thanks for making this video
I'm personally a Speed inline skater so I do Use 4 Large wheels but from time to time I like to us 3 wheels.
Crimson o yea yea
I am tired of feeling the bumpiness of the road but I have no clue if I should get 4 wheel skates with shock absorbsion or just get 3 wheel skates
*Skates with free will*
I like this dude's attitude ! Personally, I'm using a 4 wheels right now (just began a week ago) :)
Those skates are beautiful mine got ruined by water and I haven't been able to skate for 3 months. I'm so sad about it. I'm trying to save to try and buy a pair.
alex perez by water??
@Derek Simmons probably bad explanation.
I love the three wheels
Thanks man, I’m trying to figure out what skates to get as a beginner and this definitely helped me decide.
I feel a lot safer with the four one's
Amazing video! Thanks!
to be honest, now im even more confused (especially when i read the comments) and dont know what to buy =(
Thank you for the video. I’ll definitely start with the 4 wheels as you’ve suggested. But for sure I’ll graduate to the 3 wheel skates.
I used to skate as a kid, both skate board and roller skates.
So looking forward to this again!!
4 wheels!
