So comedy yes is subjective, but you can tell from this 25 minute special that this guy has relied on his frat boy friends telling him he's funny rather than bounce off material from many different types of audiences. He Clearly has like 2 joke setups and their not too well thought out. It's essentially like a bunch of crypto frat bros sat in a living room were like " yo brenden, your like so funny brooo, you should do standup for the pod bro".
Would have to be his "frat boy" friends or some people other than his comic friends.
There is no way they'd want to be responsible for letting him do it.... Unless that is the joke :)

Sense of humor is subjective but there is a craft to stand-up that really separates the greatest comedians from the rest. A great comedian can tell a joke about something you find really offensive but you still recognize it was a great joke or even make you laugh.
Somebody lied to him several times and told him that he was smart and funny and clever and insightful. But he’s nothing like that; he’s nothing of the sort.
Vaccine jokes and covid jokes from any comedian are alme limp dick attemps and I think are just filler content. He took bits from every movie he's seen ,and meshed the punchlines together. With alot of unnecessary volume and over delivery. He was the funny joke in high school and college and his bros laughed, so why won't everyone else. Bryan and Rogan have really enabled him.

Are some jokes about us funny? For sure! I love a border joke every once in a while, I love speedy gonzalez jokes or how we're way too loud! But it matters who it's coming from. If it's another Latine, go ahead, it's funny because that person has experience with it, they're making fun of their OWN community. But this is a WHITE man. Just because you married a POC doesn't mean you're suddenly not capable of being racist or bigoted. He's contributing to a larger issue as somebody who has never ever faced what the Latine community faces. He's not funny because it's genuinely harmful for him to be making these jokes.
Imagine how awkward the car ride home from one of his shows must be, or even worse would be if you went with a group who actually found his standup funny and they kept repeating the CHILI AHHHHH line over and over and actually lolzing.

I really liked the fact that you went through the deeper aspects of the comedy. It would have been so easy to say 'racial stereotypes aren't funny' because obviously we all know that. You took the extra step to point out that the very structure of the comedy special was of no value.
They are funny tho.
Because some think they are and some don’t. It’s a matter of preference and opinion whether something makes you laugh or not.
We should all know that, but unfortunately many people still don't, so it still needs to be said.
I think the joke was anti vax people stereotypically prefer natural medicines and organic food, and Whole Foods is known for being healthy and boujee, and the joke is the hypocrisy of the guy eating nachos likely loaded with preservatives and chemicals
26:48 - no, you don't understand. He's not just telling a terrible, unfunny joke here. He's literally just copying an SNL bit. Specifically, that one Weekend Update bit where Keenan Thompson would play a Latino baseball player and say Spanish words in a funny voice. He's not just making an unfunny joke, he's stealing a joke and making it worse.
I thought the " Big brown breakdown" was just Brenden discussing his bowel movements.
As for the "comedians tell fake stories all the time" defense, there's a difference between successful comedians and this guy.
First, you can't lie about a national public event, because the people who know about it won't find it funny. He was banking on nobody actually seeing the interview of the first J&J shot, which also kills the comedy because the only reason people would find it funny is if they remembered the event he was talking about. It fails on every level.
For the mountain lion story, it was so obviously fake that it reads like fantasy rather than exaggeration. There's a way to tell a similar story that seems plausible. Instead of getting the Tom Clancy gun, have the gun seller pull out the Clancy gun and make the joke that the seller went a little overboard and have him be a character. Then the next joke could be that he bought it only because he couldn't say no to a man holding that gun. There's a better way.
As an example of a good fake story, Jim Gaffigan has a bit where he goes into a store called Mr. Frank's and asks for a hot dog and it turns out to be a menswear store. This probably didn't happen, but it likely came from real inspiration when he saw a menswear store called Mr Frank's and thought "ha, sounds like a hot dog place" and then built from there.
It's obvious when a story has no basis in reality and it immediately kills the comedy unless it's intentionally overly absurd.
Worst part is, I think good comedians could have made that mountain lion segment actually grounded in reality! By just addressing how strange the situation was, maybe adding details and fleshing out some of the more nonsensical elements, it could have worked... maybe. But since this guy doesn't have a good sense of joke writing, buildup or timing, you get completely taken out of anything he could be trying to build.
With that delivery, he could tell me he breathed and it would sound fake.
Very astute and creative takes. When a “ professional “ comedy show” could be so dramatically improved so easily by you and Nick , not even amateur stand ups, it’s not even funny. Literally.
i remember that hot dog joke, i think it was actually brian regan! not 100% sure but i remember seeing that bit with my dad and it killed us lmao. good points all around, there's definitely good and entertaining ways to tell stories that aren't really true, but man this guy can't even make his stories somewhat believable.

One almost-so-absurd-it’s-good fake story is when Kevin Hart says that Seal once saved his son from a skiing accident in Colorado and then accidentally spat on his wife, which she was very sexually aroused by.
He panders so hard to the right, going as far as to record the special in Texas a place he has zero connection to. TFATK, KATS both espouse right wing talking points, propaganda, support in almost every episode. People who get paid to produce content don't promote things in their content for free. I wonder who the sponsor is.

This video was overall very well done except for the portion that you decided to insinuate that the people who flock to him are racists because of the dont tread on me sweat shirt.
The symbol today deals with overtaxation and misuse of funds by the government, so to venture off down the path of what its origin is was malicious, frankly. To imply that the man who wore the shirt was a racist, is a step too far.

In Spanish it depends on what country you come from really. In Peru we have a different word for a homophobic slur while "Puto" and "Puta" is just used interchangeably while not holding as much weight for a slur (if that makes sense). Also like Brendan not knowing what his son is saying despite being married to a spanish speaking woman is more common than you think. There are cases (in my exp) where a english speaking parent refuses to learn Spanish in the states so they tend to be in the dark on a lot of words about it.

For real, also, I’ve been in Mexican grocery stores…many of their cookies have distinct names to them. There are no “Mexican cookies,” but rather polverones (really tasty, but messy to eat..they have a cinnamon sugar coating), Maria cookies, wedding cookies, and orejitas (a fried pastry similarto an elephant ear).

There’s nothing like a “this happened the other day” comedian who lies about “what happened the other day”
It drives me absolutely insane that the line is always “the other day”. It takes me out of what ever they’re about to say IMMEDIATELY. If anything, they should say “happened to me recently” or “happened to me a while ago”. Way more natural and at least somewhat more believable

Seeing the clips of the doctor cut with this man's "comedy" is infuriating. That doctor had to study for years and put in even more absolutely back-breaking and often thankless work. He speaks so passionately and thoughtfully about the fighters he works with, and Schaub repays him by disrespecting him like this. Disgusting doesn't even describe it.

I think the nacho joke is supposed to be like the joke where an anti vaxxer would say they don't want to get the vaccine because they don't know what's in it but then smoke and eat processed food so they really don't care if they don't know what's in things they're putting in their bodies. You’re giving Brendan way way too much credit. That would never occur to him in his wildest dreams. The ‘joke’ was that he stuck his fingers in his mouth to ‘lick the nacho cheese’ off of them. After watching this special multiple times. I think I can now safely say I understand the thought process of the "nacho joke".
Brendan says, to paraphase "Oh this guy that just said 'dicey-dicey'. I bet he thinks his body is a temple. He also walks funny. He probably thinks that vaccinations will make him unhealthy!".
He then continues the joke with "But this guy is fat. He probably eats unhealthy food like cheesey nachos. He probably also looks stupid doing it. His body isn't a temple, he's a hypocrit."

I work at a comedy club and I remember when Brendan Schaub came through for a weekend to do some shows, and as someone who sees a lot of comedians, he’s not funny. The max capacity in our showroom is 400 seats, the highest number of people that came to any of his 6 shows was 143.
To put things into perspective, Noel Miller also stopped by for a weekend. Expectations weren’t super high, but Noel was pretty good considering this was his first standup tour. He had two sold out shows that weekend.
Not only is he actually funny, but he doesn't come off as a massive dick

When he talks about marrying a Mexican woman and people cheer out of nowhere it is because that part of Texas has historically had a huge relationship between the Mexicans and the gringos. It was “the biggest needle he had ever seen” and the doc said it would be “the worst pain of his life.” I nearly lost my right eye and had to get 25 stitches in my face after a dog bit me when I was around 8 years old. I got I think 4 stitches with a quick swipe of some kind of local anesthetic when I was young by my eye and didn't even feel it. And I'm a wimp, I hate pain and discomfort - no tattoos and thought ear piercings hurt (lobe).
I'm not sure he needed a syringe for his anesthetic either? I guess it may depend on the injury. I don't think he's a wimp, I think he's a liar and just doesn't know how these things work or how painful they actually are.

Imagine working 12 hours a day for 6 days out of the week and then spending your only night off to attend this POS show. And you also had to pay for it. I think I'd have a mental breakdown.
