Worked at a Comedy Club, Brendan Schuab headlined a weekend, half sold every show, crowd barely laughed, as much of a douche in person as he is online. Rude to the staff, ran up a $1300 tab in the green room (never seen a tab even close to that high, typically around $200 max), for those that know Clubs typically comp a headliners tab but it is still expected he tips his server (he didn't). For perspective, Shane Gillis came the following weekend sold out every show, absolutely crushed, drank, joked, and hung with the staff every night, tipped the entire staff (not common), and was in the general the man.

I put a lot of the blame on Rogan honestly. He was out of line the way he aired that shit out in front of the world back then. And I think he felt bad so he nudged him towards pursuing a career in stand up when he shouldn’t have.
I think Joe saw himself in Brendan. A fighter who had pretty much reached their peak and didn’t really have a clear lane. Only problem is Brendan isn’t Joe and he wasn’t cut out to be a stand up comedian. Especially when you consider the way he went about it. He has no business putting out specials. He should’ve started out at the bottom. But he didn’t do that and his reputation is probably tarnished as a result.
Guy should get back to what he knows and do more stuff in the mma community imo

That is not his biggest problem though. He is boring and has something to prove that you can automatically catch the minute he starts really talking off candid.
The fact Brandon was talked into comedy from Joe Rogan, someone that really wasn't even that funny and didn't make money until he got the fear factor gig is eye opening. He pretty much did the comedy thing on a date or as a fall back from quitting something else he really wasn't that good at. He is just an average guy and unfortunately every group of guys has a few of those average guys that are not funny or particularly good looking or anything. Joe should have paid him for that bad advice and should apologize to all of us for that stint in comedy that was enough to make anyone cringe. He is always one upping people and trying to compete like he is starting from down low and has to build himself up.
Then he should have developed better skills.

The main reason fans turned against Brendan is simply his arrogance. He started out humble and likeable and turned into a insufferable braggart. The more successful he became the more intolerable he became. He can call it "jealousy " if he wants but people like seeing people they like succeed.

There is a big difference between being funny in a podcast format, or even in a UA-cam video to being on a standup stage, you HAVE to have stage prescence, and you have to be able to do everything in one take etc. And you have to know how to vibe off the crowd and you have to be able to improvise jokes as well as have a backup of jokes for if jokes don't work.

Schaub does have a BEAST of a work ethic in that no other person has worked so hard to become more hated than Amy Schumer. For that I applaud his work ethic.

I think something people fail to mention more is that the Subreddit, originally started out as being genuine fans of the podcast. But after listening to hundreds of hours of content, they began to notice all the things Brendan did to ruin the content, such as cutting people off, always acting like an expert and dismissing others, making mean spirited jokes but would get mad when they did the same thing to him. It's the most interesting aspect of his situation, how he turned his own fans against him and would double down on being a jerk rather than accept criticism. He still talks over his guest, even tries to answer his own questions for them. He should at least accept some of the valid criticism he gets to at least be better at what he does for a living.

I think you fail to mention that Brendan's product is about goofing around, gossiping & shit talking, a free flowing laugh, off the cuff bullshit, its not a product for all the reasons people hate it, but a product for all the reasons people enjoy it. And he shouldn't change the product to appease those who don't like something enough to enjoy being die hard trolls. Despite all the 'negative' press, Brendan is still thriving doing what brought him to the dance. Joe Rogan is bigger than ever, and he has never stopped contradicting every opinion he has ever had on that podcast. If Brendan wasn't such low hanging fruit semi retarded caricature of himself, I'd believe the criticism of him to be a lot more genuine, but he's an easy target and that's the real reason for the subreddit.

The thing about being a “comedian” is that you actually have to be funny first.
That would leave 99 percent of comedians unemployed
He would get mad when other comics called him the CM punk of comedy, and would go after them. When he was the first person making fun of cm punk in mma.
It sounds like Schaub is the kind of guy who can be funny in the right situation, hanging out with the right people, etc. But it takes a lot of work to figure out what makes that funny and turn it into jokes that land, and then turn those jokes into a full comedy set.
The comedians who put out specials every couple years are the ones who have mastered their craft. They know how to write jokes that land and how to put together a funny set, they just have to take the time to do it.
Schaub tried to jump in without taking the time to master the craft, so his standup just isn't funny.

Biggest thing that resonated with me in this video was how he rushed out You'd Be Surprised. He probably could have coasted for so much longer on his live shows and podcasts and kept developing as a comic had it not been for that. It really shows you the guy's hubris and unwillingness to pay his dues as the new guy on the scene.

Giving Brendan Shaub a platform is honestly the worst thing Joe Rogan has ever done.
As far as comedy is concerned, neither Rogan nor most of his immediate circle of comedian friends whom he convinced to start their own podcasts are that funny. Theo Von is the only guy I personally think is naturally funny, the rest just like listening to themselves talk.

The amount of talent it takes to go undrafted in the NFL or reach MMA is incredible, but that was the limit, he should have recognized it and embraced what he accomplished. When you spend your life never giving up, surmounting challenge after challenge, to finally admit you've peaked is so incredibly hard. I mean, I can respect a dude lying to a delusional friend to convince them to make a career choice based on concerns for their health and safety… and I totally get that comedy isn’t always comfortable, which is to say it’s content is meant to challenge or confront the audience in some way… but seeing comedy as analogous to fighting, (especially when dealing with audience criticism) is only so productive… that scrappy tenacious attitude without any of the self-awareness, doubt or reflection that comes with years of accepting failures and criticism (wether deserved or not) turns to massive delusions of grandeur pretty quickly. Dude, great job on this. Watched a bunch of these "most hated comics", "downfall of such and such" and they all should be taking notes from you. Injected very little if any of your own biases and didn't editorialize, just told the story and presented the facts in a entertaining matter. Seen other videos on Schaub where they mix opinions and fact too much and it works against the point and makes me feel like Schaub had a point with the trolling. Def not the case here, just told the truth and that's all you need to show that the guy has a crazy ego and has made himself very easy to hate.

@@berke2336 it's also hard to not have some interaction with him, when he was on showtime he'd just be there at events, he'd make some racist comment and everyone had a take. He was frequently on JRE to talk mma, and because Joe really doesn't talk much mma unless he has an mma guy on, you'd have to watch Brendan to get Joe's take on a situation. It was pretty hard to avoid his work. But I will give Brendan credit for being g the first in the mma podcast space, he was really the only game in town for a while, until other fighters and media members started making their own podcasts.
To be honest, I love everything about Brendan. Everything except his comedy, personality, decision-making ability, and general essence.
