There certainly was a gravitas with these WABC newscasts. Grimsby was one of the best in this regard. He gave the news straight and solid, but could be amused at the right times. A perfect combination and why he was so good.

Roger and Bill were part of my childhood. I grew up in the NY metro area, and we watched ABC news.

I was born in the city where Roger Grimsby grew up. I graduated from a huge rival of the baccalaureate institution where he earned his degree (as did my father). And I am impressed deeply by his focus, determination, tenacity and integrity. I wish I could have met him when he was alive.

Grimsby and Beutel - the best NYC news team ever.
Also the greatest ad-lib in news history: after Mara Wolynski was caught flipping the bird on camera, Grimsby replied, “As Mara Wolynski would say, we’re number one!”

Newscasters back then had a level of integrity and public confidence that very few match these days.

The Legends Of New York City ABC's Dynamic Duo Roger and Bill. The ONLY NEWS TEAM still being talking more than 50 years after their debut! Their impact is still felt to this day. The reason why these 21st Century news folks can cut up and act a fool on the air is because these guys gave the term EDUTAINMENT credibilty. I grew up with these guys. I had to do school reports in the 70's and 80's with my teachers instructing us to watch Roger and Bill as well as other local newscasters such as Sue Simmons on NewsCenter 4 or Jim Jensen's (now he's got a story) Channel 2 News. Surprised no one has proposed making a film about these guys and their dedication to, as John Johnson said, "Be the people, that they bring the news to" Eloquently said as only a Eyewitness News anchor could!

Didn't know the late John Slattery was on ABC 7, I'm 37 and remembered him on WCBS growing up. Roger was one of the best anchors.

Yes, along with Roseanne Scamadella, John Johnson, Melba Tolliver, Bill Beutel and others. I was about 15, but watched with my parents. They were serious with just enough humor, cracking a joke every so often.

As a kid, I watched the news more often than most, not that I understood the political part of it, but the anchors had a presence about them that felt like they knew what they were talking about, not always glib and fake and one sided like it is now

That Mr. Grimsby did afternoon national radio news updates wasn't that much a secret - Allan Sniffen's tribute site to WABC Musicradio 77 has an aircheck from a 1969 show of top-rated PM drive DJ Dan Ingram where the :55 ABC Contemporary update was done by Grimsby. But by the time of this report, much of his radio work was confined to the ABC Entertainment network. A few other "EWN'ers" over the years also did news updates for any of the four radio networks ABC operated. That list may have included Bill Beutel. Definitely John Schubeck (during his 1967-71 stay at WABC-TV) did as well. I have no trouble believing a man who, in his long broadcasting career, had a way with words, would consider his radio duties "an imposed discipline."
