I was 11 during the blackout. Remember it like it was yesterday. The following day me and my dad went to our old neighborhood off of Andrews Avenue and it was like the zombies were let loose. It was really disgusting watching everybody burning stealing and destroying everything in sight.
I was ten at summer camp: my nearly-blind dad was driving home on the GW Bridge and found his way to our apartment, with my dog greeting him to lead him back home.
1977 was the worst year for New York City! The economic downfall from within the Big Apple! The Son of Sam killings! The terrible heat wave that summer! And especially the Blackout of '77! It's clear that the summer of '77 was the worst summer ever for New Yorkers!
Are you sure about that ? 11th of September is still summer. Summer is until 22nd September. I guess Americans consider September autumn because schools there start earlier, but in my country (Bulgaria) people still go on summer holidays in September. Fun fact : It's still autumn right now even though it's December 3rd. Winter starts in 21st December.
Remember it well, was young, just got home fortunately for me, when lights went out about hour later, was in one of the neighborhoods that had looting, riots. Crazy.
I REMEMBER I WAS THERE WHEN WAS 9 IN A HAFT YEARS OLD WITH MY FAMILY WATCHING BARNEY MILLIER IN THE OLD 19TH CENTURY APARTMENT ON WOODBINE STREET ACROSS THE STREET TO P.S. 377 IN THE BUSHWICK SECTION OF BROOKLYN AT THAT NIGHT OF JULY 13TH 1977.
This is a GREAT upload! Do Yourself a favor... Watch> "NY77 THE COOLEST YEAR IN HELL" for more on the blackout of 1977. This, coming from a New Yorker who lived through it.
No one today could understand what that summer was like: hot, Son of Sam, the Yankees, the financial crisis, crime....I was at camp in connecticut for this. Dad was on the GW Bridge and found his way home with our dog greeting him outside the building to lead him upstairs.
Wow it's amazing I'm 60 yrs old now and I Remember coming back from a Family Vacation down Florida and coming back home to New Jersey and my parents and older Siblings were just looking over at the NY Skyline in disbelief
As they said, 90% of the power came back on prior to the time of broadcast, so anyone with a TV tuned in. Back then we didn’t have 24/7 news on TV, but we did have radio stations that used generator back ups to transmit, so everyone was listening to the radios. Transistor radios mind you too. Lol. When everyone got their power back, they flipped on the TV with all 7 TV Channels to chose from. Lol.
BOY DO I REMEMBER THIS CRAZINESS!! BACK WHEN NYC WAS GOTHAM CITY 4 REAL!! SON OF SAM WAS FINALLY CAUGHT & THE BLACKOUT WHICH WASNT LIKE THE NICELY QUAINT "SAFE" NYC OF '65 BLACKOUT😮😢😅😊
The summer of 1977 New York City blackout remember this so well as a nine year old boy
The Son of Sam was no better either. Much of NYC was feeling the terror when David Berkowitz was on a killing spree.

0:28 So that’s what they called blackouts in the 70s.
Energy crisis of 77
Back when looting was frowned upon
An act of extraterrestrials perhaps, when you consider the uk’s unusual television broadcast transmission interruption which happened in November 1977
Where's Roger Grimsby?????
GRUMBLING SOMEWHERE
Probably still in his apt at the time.
*I'll be honest but more importantly the statue of limitations has run out. But I didn't think clipping those wires would cause such a big mess. 🤣🤣*
I lived in Harlem when the 1977 blackout occurred it was a crazy 24 hours

Energy crisis was tough especially New York
Not even the city itself could bear the violence and turned off the lights.
