I would also add, changing the inline fuel filter at the same time would be prudent. It's cheap and an easy replacement, snaps right in. I am well aware of debris floating into my valve separation tank which was very costly and happened at three years just one month after warranty expired, which Mercury was not willing to help me with. While we're talking maintenance, make sure to get your impeller replaced every three years, mine was very brittle, along with spark plugs, regardless of engine hours.
Might sound ignorant but what is the impeller? And where was that fuel filter on yours? I have 60 hp 4 stroke. It's in shop right now, power head, blew hole size of my fist out side of it. Mercury is covering it. But this is time of year I was planning on doing all my maintenance. I'm not paying them to do what I can easily do myself. I've always worked on diesels, gas motors, and I was mechanic and foreman at a country club for years so I can work on things. I just don't know names of this stuff on boat engines. I need to get a book with parts break down of my motor
I plan on doing this this weekend. Thanks for the walk through. I was dumbfounded when I called my local dealer and learned that they are 3-4 weeks out and then will be $500+ !!!! F THAT! haha
Good job Coach! I've been changing oil in my motorcycles since I was a teenager. Much older now! Also changed my last outboard, a Suzuki I sold last year. Will be getting a new boat with Mercury 50 in a few days. Nice to see you are an average guy dropping things and having to modify your oil filter tool. When you said I'm Mexican and used the sandpaper I LOL!
Don't pay a grand for the 300hr. You can do it yourself for sure! Plugs, oil again, seals, all the filters, lower unit again, and water pump. Water pump is easy, you just disconnect the shift linkage and drop the lower unit with a couple bolts. Old pump slides off, new slides on, put it back together. Probably want someone to help you hold it to get it all lined back up.. but its easy as can be. We did it at the boat ramp for a guy last summer, his went out mid vacation trip and we dropped the lower and changed it out right there at the resort boat ramp in 10-15 minutes.
Water pump impeller is not bad at all to change you absolutely can do it in your garage. There are no mysteries or special tools, everything is straight forward .
Changing the water pump is not hard, it just takes a little time. If you think you have totally f’ed it up then spend the grand, but don’t be afraid to try it.
You don't need to run it anymore than 30 seconds to a minute. The first place the oil goes is into the filter and then it gets pumped all through the engine.
yes you can do all that, but how you gonna reset your maintenance hours on your motor? It can only be done at certified Merc dealer. And you cant reset it with Vessel Veiw.
I add the gear case oil until comes out the rear vent, replace that plug then add more oil until it comes out the forward vent which is a bit higher. Who quoted you $400? . Like your videos.
Yosemite Sam there was about 4 to 5 shops I called out here in Northern California and the lowest quote I got was $350.. i’d rather not mention the names because at some point I might need them so I would like my boat back in one piece lol
Great job; when you find out how to change that water pump impeller be sure you post that too when the time comes 😆👍 I hit that thumbs up and that red button. #Getoutthehousegofish
Great video! Did you do the 20 hour service? I am trying to find out if I can do my own without voiding the warranty, just picked up boat, mechanic said see you in 20 hours, kinda like I have to take it to him.
I don’t know what kind of motor you have, I have a mercury, I called mercury because when I bought my boat brand new, the dealership said I had to have the 20 hour service. Absolutely nothing in the manual states a 20 hour service. That’s why I called mercury. Mercury said that was complete bogus! No service needed until 100 hours. all the so-called 20 hour service is nothing more than your dealership trying to take your money. I will say it may not be a bad idea to make sure there’s no metal, etc. after the breaking in Period but not doing it will not void your warranty in any way whatsoever.
@@Maynardd Thanks, I found out exactly what you said, my dealer is scum and the mechanic is a joke, my boat will never go back there. I am over 100 hours now, I just did the 100 hour service myself, motor has been great
Hi, first of all thanks for the tutorial. This saved me a lot of money but I have a question: is there something like a service alarm that I have to reset after the maintenance? Thanks 🙏🏻

Hey man, thx for the video. I'm from Russia, my passed away father was head over heels for these engines. I inherited a 50 hp 4 stroke that he bought last year, later that year he died. He broke in the motor, then we started roaming around and spotted that the engine would experience difficulty with running at full speed, which is 5500-6000 rpm. I still have the same problem today. As soon as I go to the max it starts kinda choking and I hear the 6 beep sound. I was advised to change the fuel filter on the fuel line, to check the fuel line on the subject of punctures, to clean the fuel tank, to clean the 4 things that go in to 4 cylinders from the injector, to change the spark plugs, altogether right away. All has been done. Do you have any ideas on that, I would really appreciate it
