If my teachers in high school would have been as smart and easy to understand as you are, I would be a smarter man. Thank you Bro for teaching me how to service my motor.
Thank you bro that is a awesome compliment! I’m glad the video helps people out! Thanks for watching the channel! Let me know if you have any questions anytime!
This was MUCH more helpful than the Mercury videos that you get from the QR code! I'm preparing for one last outing with my 23' 90 hp before the lakes freeze and am about to winterize it. I was looking all over for a video with a more in-depth explanation and this was it. Thank you sir for making this. Much appreciated!!!
To echo all of the previous comments, this is the best 'how to' vid on the subject! I have you bookmarked and refer back every 100 hrs for a quick refresher.
Thank You so much for this well explained tutorial. I have a 115 CT and have more confidence doing just the annual once a year put the boat away for winter. I live far away from a licensed marine mechanic and time and money will be saved. Thanks again.
Excellent instruction for novice boat mechanics (like me). Thanks. (The manual also suggests tilting the engine up for one minute then lowering to get all oil to flow before draining. )
The engine’s always come in the shop trimmed up and this one was trimmed up before I started.. so you’re absolutely right.. I should have mentioned that in the video.. thanks for watching the video and commenting
How on earth do you manage to explain things that others either miss or don't know. Even though my engine is a Yamaha, this advice is totally appropriate.Just the correct advice is invaluable. You show the importance of reading instructions on the engine and where to find it. I find your instruction and skills expertlty done. I also am subscribed to marine mechanical engineers and they don't always articulate everything that a novice would understand ( at least me ). Jason, I can't , for a moment fully explain how important your advice is and without being too patronising, Thank you for your time and for sharing your knowledge. Regards my friend.

Of all the do it yourself videos that I've seen, this is the best. Very thorough. Simple to follow. Although, I was looking for a Mercury 90 hp 2 stroke outboard maintenance, this was helpful
Yes I have a 90 hp 2stroke also. No oil filter, but have drained lower prop gear oil & didn’t have to remove prop. Changed fuel filter on engine & tank. Changed plugs. Still get occasional sluggish operation even after warm & have to choke to get through it.
Best video I have found for the non-professional boat motor mechanic. Thank you for keeping all steps understandable and clearly demonstrated. God Bless
Thanks good relaxed video. I have done the 100 hr service before on my 115 mercury and 250 Yamaha. Its towards the end of the season here in VT and I always do a service before the winter sets in. Although I have done this several times before I use your video as a refresher check list every year. I particularly like the parts where you remind folks to grease the engine points and trailer.
Thank you for making this Vid and looking forward to seeing more. I just bought a Lund 1775 Crossover XS with the 115 and now I will be able to refer back to this for servicing it this year. Much Appreciated!
Glad someone took the time to produce this how to. I'm fixing to do my first service on my 19' 90hp mercury 4s. The marina priced this at @$300 plus parts.
Yeah that’s too much .. ours is about half that and parts are about $100 .. but if you do it yourself your only out the parts and the time.. thanks for watching and glad the video helps people.. that’s why I do it..
Picking up a new Merc 75 in May up here in Alberta Canada, yup, still snow on the ground, just had the worst snow squal blizzard in four years two days ago! Thank you for your excellent maintenance vid, appreciate you!
Awesome congratulations on the new motor! They are a great motor very little to no problem with them .. although we did just found out they had a batch of bad IAC (idle air control) valves get out of the factory.. came across 2 in the last month already.. but mercury is handling it.. mercury is very good at taking care of issues or problems.. .. thanks for watching and hope you have a great fishing season when the ice and snow melt!
Love this video! 1/2 way through my annual maintenance on a Mercury 115 CT. Writing shirtless though, as my gear oil plugged popped out and sprayed me with used gear oil. Likely an anomaly or user error somehow. Definitely didn't notice the gear lube "not rushing out of there." No I didn't loosen the vent or overflow first. Sharing so others don't potentially get the same surprise. Not a criticism of the video. Covering all potential scenarios would create a two-hour long video. Love the video and watched about eight times to date. Thank you Real Life Fisherman for the pro guidance. I appreciate you.
You are very good at explaining how to do this. Just enough information. Also very laid back approach. That QR code should navigate people to your video. Would love to see you do major (300h) service. Dan from Australia

Hey, thanks for showing us a thing or two. I just got my plugs put in today. I am new to this motor stuff. These motors eat plugs and wires when you run them a lot.

I just picked up a new used boat with the 90hp Mercury. Not knowing when the last service was done, I'm going to do a 100 hr service on it. The boat is 4 years old, but only 63 hours on the motor. Better safe than sorry. This video is awesome-very clear and easy to follow. I feel well prepared to tackle the job. One question-how many fuel filters does the 90hp have? My 60hp has 2.
Great video! Just did my service on my 115. So I’m trying to order that plastic ring part for the gear case but I’m not seeing it anywhere. Do you have a name for it or anything?
Thanks I really appreciate it! But I have moved out to Florida this year . I’m on the Atlantic coast and bought a new center console offshore boat! Still making videos. And I’ll still be hitting the bay and delta anytime I come home to visit .. I do miss fishing it! But it’s awesome fishing out here too! Thanks for watching and commenting I appreciate it!
Excellent. I liked how he insisted on replacing the fill/vent plug seals. The only thing I would have done differently was run it, if possible, before and after.
I do run them afterwards.. but not before.. you want all the oil in the sump.. best to fully trim it up before you trim it back to vertical then wait a few minutes then drain the oil.. thanks for watching and commenting..
I thought I would have a quick look at this vid, before I go and buy a 75.I am changing from 2 Yamaha's because the dealer said I lost the warranty because I did my own miner services. I have owned and run boats with up to 600 hp all my life and done the oil changes ect, so I am loath to pay hundreds of pounds in my case for something I can easily do myself. I am commercial so a hundred hours is every few weeks. The Mercury/ Mariner looks simple enough . Thanks.
That was a great service video. The camera work was also outstanding. Often that makes a tutorial video not so helpful. I have often wondered why Mercury put the lower unit drain in such an odd place, but now it makes sense. Thanks for sharing.
Awesome glad you liked it and found it helpful! My brother in law is the wizard behind the camera and all the great editing.. we think it is better having someone film .. thanks for watching and hope you like the channel..
Great video! I just bought a mercury 115 and was wondering what your opinion is on winterizing in autumn and servicing in spring (boat is in dry marina during winter) OR winterizing and servicing in autumn and then just using it in spring with just checking oil level. Thanks
I would add to this well done video as a first step…. Run the motor and lower in drive at an idle for a couple minutes with water hose attached prior to dropping any fluids.
Excellent video, I have just repowered with the exact same 90hp. I am having a hard time to get my cowling to fit back on. Any suggestions would be helpful. It just does not want to snap back in on the back.
I have owned boats for years and just bought my first boat with an outboard, Merc 150 four stroke. For someone like me who has always done my own maintenance per manufacturer's specs, I have found that these modern four strokes are pretty darn easy to do the annual maintenance - as explained in this video. However, if you have reservations, take it to an authorized Merc shop. If you are someone who changes their own oil in your car, this is for you. Merc did a nice job making at least the 100 hr/annual and the spark plugs very simple on these motors, 300 hr. impeller is a bit more but hey, watch the video on that right here on this channel! Great job on the vids!
You are 100% right. Very important. Take it from experience. Change those yellow seals on the lower unit lube screws every time - no exceptions. My mechanic once did not do so when he change the lower unit lube resulting in water intrusion into the lower unit. I looked down when if first started the engine in my boat slip, and murky brown lube/water mixture was coming out from the lower unit around the screws. Luckily it was in freshwater, caught it right away, and no damage to the lower unit. Thanks for the great video!
Yeah it’s always been my opinion to just change them.. better safe than sorry for a couple bucks! Good that you caught it and didn’t just take off! Glad you liked the video! I appreciate you watching and commenting!
Plus i always change my fuel filters on every service.. with the crappy fuel we have now and what I’ve seen from my years building and serving gas stations.. also better safe than sorry..
That is awesome! Love to hear that!! That is why I make these videos.. to help people out..glad it did! Thanks for watching and commenting! I appreciate it!
Great video thank you!..When you were greasing the front of the motor/steering block there were two screws in the bottom two holes, none in the top two. On my motor there are no screws in either set of holes, should there be?
great vid, THANK YOU. (just a note on marine grade oil.... the ONLY difference marine oil has is that it is approved by the NMMA (Nat Marine Manufacturer Assoc) and they only approve oils that contain a rust inhibitor...a good thing of course. There is no difference as to the ability to lube better or worse for any type of engine use. If you keep your boat on a trailer at home and flush it after each use, you likely won't have rust issues and therefore you really don't need a marine grade oil.
I just did my annual service for the first time ever based on this video yesterday, I’m telling you guys don’t go to any other videos just watch this one. Worked out great.
Best video ever. Just bought a 2022 crestliner 1750 fish hawk with a115 mercury and a 9.9 kicker. I love to do my own maintenance and this was great. now is the maintenance the same on the 9.9?
Awesome! Congratulations on the new boat! Glad you liked the video and found it helpful! I will be doing a video on my own 9.9 pro kicker very soon .. thanks for watching and commenting I appreciate it!
Thanks for the step by step..Awesome..I have a 2004 mercury 4 stroke..I found the cartridge filter but I can't find the inline filter..I checked the manual and only shows 1 filter to change..Is there only one on the 2004?
Hi there, very good information. Can you tell me why the oil drain plug on my 90 Merc four stroke is located beside the vent plug ( it's a slotted screw like the vent plug). Also, why does this engine have 2 inline fuel filters? Do you have any suggestions on how to winterize the bilge pump/live wells? Thanks again.
Yours is the design just before this model in the video. It has a fuel filter for the high and low pressure sides of the fuel pumps . And has a different gear case as well. I would recommend using a air blow gun and a compressor to blow back through the thru-hull fittings towards the pumps to make sure all the water is out if you’re concerned about that. Thanks for watching I appreciate it
I have a 2009 115 Mercury outboard, but it doesn't have that niffy drain plug on it, its just a standard oil bolt. It makes quite a mess trying to drain the oil. Where can i get one like yours at 10:23? There is a website called EZ oil drain, but they don't list Mercury outboards.
Awesome! Welcome to the channel and thanks for subscribing! Glad you liked the video and found it helpful.. let me know if you ever have any questions..
Just bought myself a alumacraft 165 sport with a 90hp. You did a excellent job explaining everything clearly on this yearly maintenance. I appreciate you taking the time to share this important information with me and other boaters. All the best take care. 👍 Thumbs up and subscribe
Awesome congratulations on the new boat! Thanks I’m glad you liked the video and found it helpful! And thanks for subscribing and commenting I appreciate it! Tight lines! 🎣
The 300-hr. maintenance kit has a fuel rail filter in addition to the main fuel filter. Are there any tips or gotcha's for replacing the fuel rail filter?
Get the size off the otiker clamp before you cut it.. because you will need the replace it! And it’s easier if you remove the side chaps a bit.. but from experience it’s not usually necessary if you have changed the inline and done you annual maintenance.. if your engine is older and never had it.. or had really bad gas then definitely change it! Thanks for watching
Great video, saved. BTW what’s the difference between filling the lower unit via the bottom plug vs the top plug, it seems less messy to fill from the top? Thx.
Amazong video.. thank you! Regarding the screw driver , I see a medium and large size screw driver on the snap on website... which one would be appropriate for a 75 hp? The screw drivers are different sizes
Thanks for the great video. Does it matter which way the yellow seals on the lower unit plugs go? I noticed that one side is flat and the other side has notches.
Dude, this video rocks. Great and amazing job presenting. My only request would be to list all of the parts and part numbers for us for each of the things you acquired, so it will make the shopping list easier and less guess work. Additionally, you said the Snap On screwdriver was like 20 something bucks, I guess now it's 40 and I'd also like to see the link to purchase the screw in funnel by Snap On too. If you publish that parts list with oil filter, oil, fuel filter and those two gaskets, I'd appreciate it. Again, thank you so much.
You take a picture of your model number and go to your local marine workshop. We have an Advnanced Marine near me... You tell them you want the annual service kit and they will box everything up for you. This is by far the best video I have found for Mercury 115. I found the funnel on amazon, it was the one made for GM & Mercury...
@@SubsonicEventDJOrlando Thanks Sub... I ended up doing a bit of research and using the serial number of the outboard to locate a great chart on an Amazon site that showed all the part numbers for that serial number of motor (and above). I was able to get everything, including the washers, filter, special 1 1/8 prop wrench, and that GM funnel too. I figured while I was at it, I just bit the bullet and bought enough supplies for two complete services, so I didn't have to go through the hunt again in the near future for everything.
Wow - this should be *the* official Mercury video on how to do an annual service - thank you, very well done 👍👍👍

Thanks! I’m glad it was helpful.. thanks for watching and commenting!
Fantastic video/tutorial. I'm very grateful for your efforts. Hope to see you on the Sacramento Delta or SF Bay someday to say "thanks".
Thanks for watching and commenting I appreciate it!
thank you for the video it saved a lot of time ..well explained.....
hope to see the 300 hours..next time well done again mate
When I get my next boat I'm going to save a fortune thanks to your videos! Thank you Sir!
No problem.. thanks for watching the channel!
Great tutorial on how to do the 100 hour service! Thank you for this as it helped me out a lot!
Awesome! Glad it was helpful and thanks for watching and commenting!
Thanks.
Excellent explanation my friend...and thank you ....gonna go change my oil in the Mercury 75 on the pontoon right now....
Very well done - we followed your directions and all went well. Thank you!
Any videos on ecm flash/swap to take a 90 to 115? And differences between the to? Cam/ fueling/timing/air flow.
Very well done. Methodical and neat. I used to pay to get this done but I feel confident enough now to do it myself. Thank you for making this.
you are the best teacher I can do it by myself now..
Awesome! Glad the video was helpful! Thanks for watching and commenting!
@@ReelLifeFisherman new sub. I liked it. 😁
Thanks for subscribing! Much appreciated! Let me know if if you ever have any questions.. I try my best to help out the best I can over the internet..
Thanks for the video. Everything youve done makes it so much easier for a novice to complete the job. Saving us money for more BEER!
Excellent video, I have just repowered with the exact same 90hp. I am having a hard time to get my cowling to fit back on. Any suggestions would be helpful. It just does not want to snap back in on the back.
Great video and super clear explanation. You are a great communicator. Thanks!
Thanks I appreciate it! Glad the video helped.. thanks for watching and commenting..
Thank you! I’m glad you found the videos helpful and like the channel! I really appreciate you watching and commenting!
You’re the best explainererer!
Great video. Just bought a new Mercury so your video was perfectly timed for me. Kudos!!!
Awesome! congratulations on the new motor! Glad you liked the video let me know if you have any questions
this guy nailed it.....thanks for this video i can now tune up my mercury 75hp
Thanks! Glad it was helpful! Thanks for watching and commenting much appreciated!
Just did my 20 hour change thanks for the informational and detailed video did it with no problems
Thanks for sharing, just had my mako for annual service. it's a few hundred dollars, now i'm going to do it myself.
BY FAR THE BEST VIDEO ON UA-cam FOR SERVICE, THUMBS UP, THANK YOU
I really appreciate that! I’m glad it helps ! And thanks for watching and for the comment! Let me know if you have any questions..
I just did my annual service for the first time ever based on this video yesterday, I’m telling you guys don’t go to any other videos just watch this one. Worked out great.
This is quality and how it should be done.... great job
Thanks I appreciate it! Glad you liked it and it was helpful! Thank you for watching and commenting!
There is a website called EZ oil drain, but they don't list Mercury outboards.
man... so much great information, and you present it in a way thats easy to follow. New subscriber
I watch this every spring before the boat goes in the water
The 300-hr. maintenance kit has a fuel rail filter in addition to the main fuel filter.
Thanks for watching
outstanding video. I learned so much. you helped a rookie!
Awesome! I’m glad it was helpful! Thanks for watching and commenting!
great video, goes over everything and has good advice from experience!
Awesome glad it was helpful! Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment I appreciate it!
Great vid! However my marina says my 2021 mercury 115 requires 25w40 engine oil?
Great video, saved. BTW what’s the difference between filling the lower unit via the bottom plug vs the top plug, it seems less messy to fill from the top? Thx.
Great video! Thanks! Any need to inspect anodes or thermostat? If so, how?
Pretty damn Awesome! Far and away best example of boat maint I've seen... I'm sold!
Thanks I’m glad you like it! I appreciate the comment! Thanks for watching!
Excellent job. Just a question for you. What is that white plastic piece called that goes behind the prop that has the 4 clips
It’s called a bore sleeve ring thanks for watching and commenting I appreciate it
@@ReelLifeFisherman thank you sir. Do you have a post for 300 hour or 3 year service.
Do have video of changing water strainer on the 115 Comand thrust four stroke ? Great video
Excellent. Well done, informative, and clear. I appreciate your work! Now if you could only tell me how to replace my stator!
Great information on the amazon hour meter, thank you put one on this week...
