I feel like she never got enough credit for how clean her form was in every apparatus(other than her leaps on beam which we all know about). She's one of the very few gymnasts I've seen point their toes while doing a silivas and her ray was also spectacular
I agree 100% but I feel this way about her bar routine. She was never given the execution score she deserved on that event and others were given the execution score even though they were a mess.
@@gymstyle5091 I agree. I know she may not have had as much difficulty but her execution was clean enough for her to score a bit higher in that department. She's one of the few to do a ray dismount AND her form was clean on it
@@murasakino101 They only found 3 tenths difference between her and Nastia's routine when Nastia had leg separations on every move and missed almost every handstand. The judging was always suspect
I will never forget the positive energy she brought to this sport. Not only would she start and end every routine with a bright smile, but just the way she moved and performed had a positive energy to it. I will always look up to her for that. 💕
Shawn is probably my absolute favorite gymnast of all time. Her routines were always so clean, and it always felt like she was genuinely having a good time. I’m so glad she’s kept a social media presence - getting to see her and her happy family makes me smile. 🥰
Shawn was the the first American gymnast I started watching. I remember watching the Beijing Olympics when I was just a couple months shy of turning 8, there was something about her gymnastics that drew me in. She didn't have the flexibility or long lines that Nastia and a lot of the Chinese gymnasts did, but her tumbling had a form a grace and she created her own kind of artistry. Not to mention she opened the door to the future "United States of Amanars"
She actually made me interested in gymnastics. When I saw her on tv in Bejing, I was hooked and still am. Absolutely love her. Thanks for the awesome video. :)
omg literally!! i watched so many compilations of her competing and it made me wanna join my high school gymnastics team (i did join and i got a back handspring out of it lol).
It’s crazy how much difficulty Shawn had. A 5-pass floor routine, which included both a double-twisting double back tucked and a full-twisting double back tucked. A bar routine with a double twisting double back laid out. An Amanar on vault. A gold-medal worthy beam routine with a full-twisting double back tucked dismount. That sounds exhausting, and also makes me wonder how she didn’t win the AA in 2008 with that much insane difficulty.
The judges screwed her in favor of Liukin, who was long, thin, borderline anorexic, and had the 'European look' they liked. Johnson was too short, muscled, and compact for them to give her an Olympic AA title; you have to be Biles and twice as virtuosic as all other competitors to win with that body type. Disgusting but true.
I hate how everyone (especially announcers) talked about her beam and belittled her performance on all other events, but she was seriously so solid all around. I always LOVED her bars and thought she was criminally underrated.
Thank you for your superb high quality videos. From the editing to the selection to the commentary, they are exquisitely professional and both satisfying and educational to watch! This video made think it would be interesting to showcase other gymnasts in the same way BUT would be even more intriguing to see those who were very good at one event yet not great at others (i.e. great bar worker, less good/average on vault, etc.)
I used to watch Shawn when I was like 10 years old on UA-cam just like this.. knowing nothing about gymnastics. Since watching the Tokyo olympics I have been educating myself and watching Shawn again with the knowledge I know now is so nostalgic and mesmerising.. truly a fan favourite and I’m sure she kickstarted a lot of peoples love for gymnastics 💖
She literally Jordan Chiled the entire 08 season (except for the American cup where she unveiled her amanar) because of how consistent she was. Nastia obviously wasn’t perfect that season but literally the one time she’s on her A game was the AA final. But Shawn’s mental strength that year was unmatched. She was never fazed by pressure. Even won beam despite having fallen so much in warm ups and fatigued after 3 months of competing.
Dominique Dawes had been rocking the full twisting double back dismounts 20 years before. Now I know how disgracefully she was underscored by biased judges. Sean Johnson was excellent with the acrobatics. She was fun to watch.
Love her but her Amanar was underrotated a good chunk of times especially during the AA final in 2008 Olympics, she got lucky that they didn't downgrade her to a DTYz otherwise she'd have been a bronze medalist and Yang Yilin would've been silver.
Sorry, but she was never underrotated to the point it would be devalued 😂 also- Nastia was given a lot of “gifts” in Beijing, so I don’t think Shawn was rewarded with extra points where she didn’t deserve them.
@@taylorburtis Shawn's Amanar was underrotated a good number of times that's the reason she always had that cross step landing especially in the whole 2008 season because she's still twisting even after her feet touch the ground. And there's always scoring woes that you can point out but what's true is true whether it got downgraded in Beijing really came down to judges that day as they had a long discussion in AA final before awarding Shawn her VT score, so calm down, I love Shawn as a gymnast but I appreciate when skills are performed level best and that was definitely not the case there. Tbh I'd rather have Yang Yilin win the gold before Nastia and Shawn because she had really solid execution throughout (ofcourse NBC commentators would digress with me on this).

Having a big difficulty moves doesn’t make you well-rounded. It is as much about flexibility, presentation and choreography. Shawn is clearly “the powerhouse” gymnast but can’t really day she was well-rounded, not even talking about how her bars were quite mediocre except the dismount (which still doesn’t make her a good bar worker in any sense)
It makes her well-rounded in the fact that she was doing the most difficult stuff with the highest grade of execution. I know the 06-08 code didn't hammer on execution as harshly as it does today, but it's clear Shawn had some of the best technique in the game. Also, every gymnast is going to have a "weak" event; that doesn't mean they aren't well-rounded.
@@soleil8441 I mean, Myk Skinner is well-rounded as well by this definition which is clearly not the case! Again, Shawn was a typical powerhouse gymnast, but it doesn’t mean she can’t be flexible or artistic. There are so many examples of a truly well-rounded gymnasts like Simone, Rebe, Aliya and so on Clearly, gymnasts are better on some events than others, but Shawn’s UB were weak on its own and not bc it was overshadowed by her stronger events (like Simone’s UB, for example) I’m saying this without a bit of hate bc I love her beam a lot, but calling her well-rounded gymnast is quite a stretch IMO

Her 2 foot bhs bhs back layout on beam was definitely my favorite

Maravilhosa em todos os aparelhos.
Has anyone else in history ever competed a G+ skill in every event? With Amanar or better for vault?
I don’t think so! Simone Biles would the closest but she’s only gone to an F on bars
Been trying to think about it too but whoever it is always just falls short of this. Thanks!
