Seeing Shawn and Nastia back to back really demonstrates the diversity between their styles and skills. Both outstanding gymnasts, so different in their look and approach and feel. Shawn is just a solid powerhouse and Nastia’s fluidity… It’s awesome.
It's so satisfying to watch Shawn's rock-solid acrobatics. I'm so happy she got a gold too. She said in an interview that she kept getting silvers (team, AA, floor), so she was prepared for another silver on this event (heartbreaking, right?), so it's extra awesome that she ended her Olympics with a gold (beam was the last day). She also wanted a gold as a way of thanking Chow as he returned to his country of origin. I personally think she's a teensy bit better gymnast than Nastia and could've won the AA, esp since she was also a FT high school student, training only 26hours/wk. Imagine if she trained 40h like Nastia!! She basically trained at 65% of that and still came in 2nd.
Heartbreaking? As if a silver medal, not to mention multiple silvers, isn't an amazing feat. Some athletes are satisfied just winning an Olympic bronze.
I love both Shawn and Nastia and i love that they're so close even more. But in my opinion, Shawn was very underscored at these Olympics while Nastia was over scored. It was quite clear that the judges here had preference to Nastia's body type and subsequent gymnastics style. Which was more of those times. The more robust and "stronger" looking gymnast was just starting to become "acceptable", if not appreciated.
Shawn also said that she physically couldn’t do 40hours each week in the gym because her body couldn’t take it. Shawn also had the advantage of youth on her side. By the time she was Nastia’s age, she could no longer be competitive because her body couldn’t hold up.
The amount of focus, confidence, and maturity these women exude in their performances is over the top!!! I hope to see more of it in today's generation of gymnasts.
43:37 - I love how both girls looked at which side of the medal Shawn showed, then adjusted to match her. I know it's kind of an insignificant detail, but I find it cute :)
According to Shawn, she went completely autopilot in this routine. It seems that it worked a lot for her because this balance beam routine was so clean and flawless.
No one could work a balance beam like Shawn Johnson it literally always look like she was on the floor flipping she was amazing she was so consistent I don't think I've ever seen anybody even after her and this is 2021 as consistent as Sean Johnson was on the bean
I don't care if gymnastics used to be more like "balet", what I care more about is that it had a consistent dance like flow, and seamless transitions between movements. Now it's all just random movements that break up the flow. And something I like about Simone Biles, is that her movements are rough and raw, but she doesn't do unecessary movements that break her flow, just to appear more "elegant".
As a Shawn Johnson fan this was one of my favorite moments of that Olympics. On the final day of competition she finally got past her streak of silver medals and won herself a gold.
Nice to see Nastia smile mid-dismount. I think an immense amount of pressure must have been lifted off her after her all-around gold. Like she was finally free to enjoy the sport.
She said in one of her videos, she literally fell on every practice on that back full prior to this final. She was surprised that she held on to that skill in final.
Shawn has a tendency to lie and exaggerate a lot lol. I don't believe anything she says to make herself look better. She has claimed she was team captain (Sacramone), was youngest on the team (Sloan), and was favored for 5 gold medals (team, floor, all around, beam....she only had 1 vault, her bars was awful, so what is the 5th??) . She said Marta told her & Nastia they weren't guaranteed a spot on the team after Olympic Trials (huh?). Shawn has twice claimed she went to Worlds in 2011 and "did pretty well", and even claimed she was all but guaranteed a spot on the 2012 olympic team if she didn't get injured.
I do agree that pavlova did amazing but Chen’s fei score was a 5th higher so it’s only fair that she got it even though pavlovas execution was so much better in my opinion
@Albafica_Piscis a couple of tenths and I think that may have given Shawn the gold and her the silver here. That was the best she did that routine ever.

Then Nastia with her Grace, flexibility, fluidity, technicality, originality and you couldn't show anyone else yet cover all of the Beam possibilities.

Makes me so upset that Anna didn't get that bronze! She should be a 4x Olympic bronze medalist, including the 2004 all around! 😡 I don't know why the judges didn't take more deductions on Cheng's routine with all those wobbles!
Exactly, she should've been the one who won the only Olympic medal for Russia in Beijing, what could've been if that happened, maybe she wouldn't have been shunned by the Russian coaches for the vault incident if she did
Daisey Casey no Shawn got 9.225, Cheng got 9.150, and Anna got 9.100. Which shows how overscored Cheng was because the first 30s of her routine costed her almost up to 1 point (0.1 after L spin, 0.1 for arm bend during BHS, 0.5-0.6 for large wobble after 1/1 back tuck, 0.1-0.2 for balance check after back pike)
Hmm best form on what? She has great form but so does Pavlova, and Pavlova didn’t have the big balance checks Cheng had, we all knew it was home advantage
I liked how friendly Shawn and Chow and everyone was to them. Not only were they were nice to Valeri and Nastia (and vice versa) but it was the same with the other Chinese gymnast (probably due to Chow being Chinese)
Once you start, you can't stop. I randomly watched some gymnastics videos a few years ago and found myself totally obsessed. And now I know every gymnast, every meet, every move, etc. It is SUCH an amazing sport to get into.
It’s crazy to think that had Pavlova done her skill correctly, she would’ve gotten a 7.0 difficulty score, I know people don’t talk about it too much but she did have a super difficult routine, pretty much the same as Shawn 😯

I was so happy watching this the first time because three of my favorites were in this! Shawn, Nastia, and Anna! I'm glad Shawn and Nastia ended up on the Podium. Well deserved of all three who got onto the podium.
PLEASE UPLOAD UNEVEN BARS EVENT FINAL BEIJING 2008
OMG!!! YES
They did
Gabriela Dragoi received only a 9,125 for execution and Fei Cheng, clearly with more mistakes, received a 9,150. It's unfair
Dragoi’s skills and control were amazing
Home court i guess
Shawn, and Nastia, are two of the very best balance beam experts that have ever been on one of those beams! they show us their best, and we all admire them for it! all of america is proud of them. i wish them both the very best.
Wow. Shawn Johnson made her routine look so easy🤩
I remember becoming a Shawn Johnson fan after watching this olympics lol
Ugh it will be so amazing if you posted all the event finals from this Olympics * wink *
-with BBC commentary
And subtitles * double wink *
The fact that Shanshan has a full 1.0 deduction for the fall and still scored 15.300 is quite impressive
Seeing Cheng smile for Shawn when she took over the lead was sweet.
Yes very
God if you want a training tape or recruitment video for young girls then you've got to show Shawn then Nastia. Complete opposite in styles.
Shawn, energy, power, precision and the tenacity. Then Nastia with her Grace, flexibility, fluidity, technicality, originality and you couldn't show anyone else yet cover all of the Beam possibilities.
russia ALWAYS has the absolute best jackets! i wanted this one and the rio one. such cool designs
Same I've been on so many teams for track with them but they don't seem too approachable
Yes!
I love Shawn was so happy for her. Remember this day
Each time I watch Shwan routine, I cry ! What an Amazing gymnast and what a powerful skils ! Nastia also is so powerfull with her flexibility ! just amazing their originality of routines !
Cheng Fei's and Li Shanshan's BHS and Pike are from textbooks. And Fei's twist has the best form among girls.
That slow mo of the dismount really showed her superior form
Shawns beam look more difficult and intricate compared to Simones beam routine.
She does have a lot of difficulty Shawn and Simone have similar gymnastic styles it’s just Simone’s dismount is very hard and she gets a lot of height but I’m a fan of both
Shawn excelled at beam and floor and had okay amanar and average bar exercise while biles is top class in all the events and is still going
I like how the older Chinese gymanst was consoling the younger one
I think, even as she was up there, Nastia knew this was Shawn Johnson's moment . That insane triple back flip ! Wow ! Nastia was gorgeous, & flawless, but the moment belonged to Shawn. Awesome ! Our 2 ladies made us so proud. ------------MJL, 77 y/o
Makes me so upset that Anna didn't get that bronze! She should be a 4x Olympic bronze medalist, including the 2004 all around! 😡 I don't know why the judges didn't take more deductions on Cheng's routine with all those wobbles!
People felt sorry for Cheng Fei since she was supposed to already have 3 golds- floor, vault, and team.
I liked her routine the best
Exactly, she should've been the one who won the only Olympic medal for Russia in Beijing, what could've been if that happened, maybe she wouldn't have been shunned by the Russian coaches for the vault incident if she did
Cheng got same execution as Shawn ridiculous
Daisey Casey no Shawn got 9.225, Cheng got 9.150, and Anna got 9.100. Which shows how overscored Cheng was because the first 30s of her routine costed her almost up to 1 point (0.1 after L spin, 0.1 for arm bend during BHS, 0.5-0.6 for large wobble after 1/1 back tuck, 0.1-0.2 for balance check after back pike)
Love this final !
Btw, can't believe Li Shan Shan falling on the Rulfova, she used to be so great at those.
I feel bad for her, everyone makes mistakes but she made it on the worst day possible
The Chinese leotard for this year was so so gorgeous. I remember watching it when I did gymnastics that year and wanting it so badly😂
I love Gabriela's and Nastia's lines and Shawn's tumbling ... OMG
Anna really deserved the bronze here.
Hahaha a série da Fei tinha mais elementos de ligação e alto grau de dificuldade.
Why no one's gonna talk about Afan? I mean the attitude she gives when she's on the apparatus is just phenomenal
This was great to watch again. But the feeling of watching this live was like no other!
Anna Pavlova, the underrated and unlucky gymnast of my heart 💙
Balance checks are not the only deductions you can get, guys. Cheng Fei had the best form, she also had her chest upright in everyting.
Hmm best form on what? She has great form but so does Pavlova, and Pavlova didn’t have the big balance checks Cheng had, we all knew it was home advantage
@@sinhueherrera8984 pavlova didn't hit her handstand in her kolesnikova and thus missed that entire element
China's girls are so cute and seems very kind💛
I liked how friendly Shawn and Chow and everyone was to them. Not only were they were nice to Valeri and Nastia (and vice versa) but it was the same with the other Chinese gymnast (probably due to Chow being Chinese)
Queen Shawn Johnson
Shawn Johnson really did put it down here.
Seeing: Beijing 2008
Thinking: it was 2 years ago...
Wow the moves back then on balance beam was.....different...much better than today.
Not me randomly getting into gymnastics lmaooo it’s so cool and Shawn is so fresking awesome dude wow
Once you start, you can't stop. I randomly watched some gymnastics videos a few years ago and found myself totally obsessed. And now I know every gymnast, every meet, every move, etc. It is SUCH an amazing sport to get into.
@@SquirtlePower809 LMAOOOOOOO GIRL YOU TELLIN ME I BE WATCHING MYKAYLA SKINNER VLOGS, GLAMOUR GYMNASTICS DOCUMENTARY, YOU NAME IT HAHA
The quality of the audio is so satisfying. Headphones recommended!
This routine of Johnson's and Miller's 96 beam final are my all time favorites.
Shawn is SO SELF ASSURED on beam. Will never tire watching her routines
cheng fei overscored. i can't even.
well if you can't even, then don't even
@@k.a.3247 you’re odd 😀
Shawn Johnson is incredible.
Geez remember when having a 15.000+ score in those times meant no possibility of a medal
And nowadays gymnasts are lucky to get above an 8.5 in execution 😂
@@FrancesBaconandEggs actually 8.0
@@nathan10120 hard disagree, that would mean most gymnasts were in the 7s…definitely not the case.
@@FrancesBaconandEggs they kind of are. It’s like 50 - 50
This has been my all time favorite routine! Thanks, Shawn Johnson
Shawn Johnson has been my favorite gymnast ever.
I think if Cătălina Ponor would have compeate , it would be a more Epic fight
She will forever be Queen of the floor for me. She's beautiful in person and so stunning and elegant in her moves.
Beam finals just do not make any sense without Catalina competing.
@@kp395 Says a Cătălina Ponor fan.
I missed Catalina for this competition it would have been something super interesting to see
Why didn’t she compete in Beijing ?
Shawn Johnson is just SUPERB! Her gymnastics are just so stunning and executed so cleanly.
It’s crazy to think that had Pavlova done her skill correctly, she would’ve gotten a 7.0 difficulty score, I know people don’t talk about it too much but she did have a super difficult routine, pretty much the same as Shawn 😯
I love the beam routines at this Olympics and the code of points. Now all the routines are the same
