I think the quad series on the beam is really spectacular. The back to back acro series also give a great flow to the routine, compared to today's 4 lines with not a lot of artistry in between which gives the routines a very fragmented look.

Also it puts the health of gymnasts at risk in some cases, like how they have to finish tumbles with their feet together instead in a lunge position. It puts their knees at risk. The code of points is the reason “optional” routines all mirror one another. It’s obvious to all of my fellow gymnasts, which moves/combinations are of the highest value , because they dominate routines etc. across the board. Gone are the days when every gymnast had to compete on all 4 events-the beam, bars, floor and vault. And you used ballet and dance to express your personality, choreographing your beam and floor exercise. There’s very little self-expression currently, because the COP dictates the majority of time spent on the apparatus.

If the code writers are so concerned about safety, just ban the move. They've done it with tons of others. If something is difficult, it should have the appropriate point value associated with it. However, in the same vein, coaches and athletes should be aware of their personal limits.
Michael Phelps didn't have a handicap over other swimmers because his arms are longer than average. Sports are a celebration of people's extraordinary abilities. Just like your kindergarten teacher said, "everyone is unique". Everyone has different levels of capability. It's also ridiculous that female track athletes have to control their naturally high testosterone levels. They test regularly for performance enhancers. If someone has special genetics, let them use their body to the fullest extent.

How interesting about the one-armed giants it’s very much like the Biles beam dismount (double twisting double). Where the point value is scored at the same level as an easier element to dissuade gymnasts from harder skills with higher risk of injury. While I can understand this logic, it seems a bit unfair to athletes that try to push the sport forward into new levels. Like after Rio, every girl and their sister were attempting (some very successfully) the Biles (double layout with half twist).

I loved the back to back tumbling passes and the quads on beam. It made it exciting to watch and I’d love if they came back. More importantly, I’d like to see more variations in the gymnasts routines. They repeat a lot of the same moves as they are going for the highest starting score they can get. Maybe relax a bit with the scoring of some of other moves and raise the value so we get more variety again.

  • @captainbryce1

The only one of these things that I don't like are the cat leaps. They just don't look good in my opinion. But everything else needs to come back, and taking them out of the sport has made everything one-dimensional, identical, and boring. There's no variety anymore. The quad series on beam was incredibly difficult and it makes no logical sense why this isn't given any credit anymore. Back-to-back tumbling when executed correctly was a huge crowd pleaser and also encourages artistry and variety. The arabesque is a pretty element that also adds flare on beam skills. And the one-arm giant was ridiculously undervalued for a very stupid reason (basically the same thing happened with Simone Biles beam dismount and vault). I really wish the FIG would go back to encourage variety and stop trying to homogenize the sport. Different gymnasts have different strengths and weaknesses. Why not accentuate the variety and differences in style?

Gotta disagree about the °180 scale. I think it should be much lower, maybe have the rule be above a °90 or something. These elite ladies that train their lives away on beam still occasionally fall off that 4in beam on regular skills, so I feel some reward should be due for landing skills on 1 foot. Also, as much as i liked the back to back passes on floor, i kinda have to worry about soft tissue injuries from physical exhaustion as well as invisible injuries from so many flips in quick succession. They certainly are capable of doing these... But training such moves constantly has to take its toll. And i definitely disagree with the 1 arm giant thing. If its safe for men then why not for women

How gymnastics has been dumbly "uglyfied"

    • @djstace808

Every year, the women are moving towards the men. Every year, the ballet/dance training has been replaced more and more with strength training. The bodies more masculine. There is no room for personality and no place for individuality.

@@djstace808 I totally agree all I can hope is that the code of points is changed back. But of course that will never happen. I just don’t understand how the judges don’t value originality and fluidity and balance. All of the routines before around 2005 were really good especially in the 80’s. You don’t even think of gymnastics as a graceful sport anymore.

1 arm giants can cause serious injury. You can pull a muscle easily easily.
The fig has had changed rules now only allowing 4 runs which I agree with. I’m happy with the changes.

I feel the one arm for the women was taking out at that time because nobody else was doing them and completing them and therefore they removed it and that's kinda crappy. I love gymnastics since I was two years old and I started even before then from what mom said. She said when I was in my crib I would flip out. I just feel like more could do that move today because gymnast are so much more advanced today and that is one strong move for a woman and it use to be a requirement for the men in the 80's.

It came back for a while mid-2000’s. I remember seeing Nastia Liukin doing a lot of it. But it doesn’t “flow” or look as pretty as back tumbling. I remember Paul and Morgan Hamm also commenting that they didn’t like the trend at the time because the skills just weren’t as difficult but were getting big scores due to the CoP.
