How To Swap The Free Hub Body On Your Wahoo KICKR Smart Trainer For A SRAM 12-Speed Cassette

  • Recently I purchased a 2021 KICKR Smart Trainer from Wahoo and it comes stock with a Sun Race 11-speed cassette. I personally run a SRAM 12-speed cassette on my Specialized Allez Sprint which is my main road race bike. I couldn't find much good information on the internet explaining how to swap your free hub body on the Wahoo KICKR to be compatible with a new SRAM 12-speed cassette.
    After a bit of research, I found that you need to install an XD/XDR Freehub Body, Wahoo does provide this kit so you can use that, but most local bike shops have them as well. I was lucky enough to pick up an XD/XDR Freehub Body from UCCyclery here in San Diego when I actually picked up the new 2021 KICKR Smart Trainer.
    In this video, I walk you through the precise steps to take to pull off the original 11-speed cassette and get a new SRAM 12-speed installed and ready to ride.
    To be clear, you don't need to shift for basic intervals on the KICKR Smart Trainer as it has built in ERG mode that is compatible with TranerRoad, Zwift, and other indoor cycling training apps.
    Ideally though, the new KICKR will allow full range of shifting with a SRAM setup for Zwift racing and non-ERG applications once the XD/XDR hub is installed and ready to go.

I’ve put in probably 10 trainer sessions on it and I haven’t noticed that…but come to think of it I did have one wild run up I believe one time just doing a free ride in Z2 but to be honest I attributed that one to my stupid bent derailleur hanger. Jumped like three gears but I was also cross chaining super hard. I’ll give it a few more rides and let you know if the issue becomes a recurring one, I’ve been able to shift through the cassette mostly with ease. I will say it definitely does not like cross chaining.

    First off, your video is super helpful. But, my install didn’t yield such smooth results. Major slippage and I can’t get it remedied and my install is a SRAM gx and I’m using a MTB. So, my question.. I’m certain I need the spacer behind the cassette, but what about the small spacer ring that goes on the hub before the cassette? My cassette is a 12 speed. I didn’t see you install it, but I keep reading it needs to be there for a MTB. Any thoughts?

    • @WaltDoesBikes

      Hey Gary,
      Thanks for reaching out. Legendary last name by the way funny how close ours are.
      I'll be honest I'm not 100% certain if there's a difference on the MTB front v. the non MTB. Is it still an XD/XDR SRAM hub? So interesting point here, initially I thought you needed the small spacer ring but after research I found the opposite rhetoric on the subject (most people saying it's not used for 12 speed). One thing I might mention is that if you overtighten the nut a bit your flywheel will not freespin and you'll get a ghost pedal. After backing off the tension a bit on the outer nut that seemed to save the day. To date, I've not had issues without the tiny spacer ring. Neither shifting or just keeping it fixed in ERG mode. Sorry I can't be of more help on this. Let me do some external research though and see if I can find some more info for you. I might write to SRAM or KICKR and see if I can get an official response from them.

    Let's say I only wanted to ride in erg mode. My current Wahoo setup is for an 11 speed shimano, gravel bike I want to put on is 12 speed SRAM. Staying in erg mode would I need to still make the freehub/cassette change?

    • @WaltDoesBikes
      @WaltDoesBikes  2 роки тому

      Staying in erg mode it really shouldn’t be an issue. I’m not 100% sure with a flattop chain the teeth of the cogs will run smoothly with that setup. However, shifting spacing won’t be a problem which is the primary driver to switch.
      Bottom line, your bike won’t explode so realistically you can try it on an 11 speed cassette and see if it fits your preference. My only thought against it is that it could potentially wear your chain a bit quicker if something is a bit off.

  • @h31sman

    I followed your tutorial to a T, but my cassette is not sitting flush against the trainer the way yours is like you can see at 8:48. With mine, there’s a small gap where you can still see the free hub body. I’ve tried taking it apart and trying again and still the same thing. I’m using a 12 speed AXS Rival cassette XG-1250. The gap is not allowing the thru axle adapter to sit out so the bike doesn’t fit. Any help would be greatly appreciated. 🙏🏼

    • @WaltDoesBikes
      @WaltDoesBikes  2 роки тому +1

      What it initially sounds like is that the free hub body may not be completely seated into the trainer. There are small teeth on the inner part of the freehub body that have to be completely inside the trainer. Once that’s confirmed, the cassette itself needs to almost click into place. You’ll hear it pretty loud and clear when it properly drops into the free hub body. I have about 1/2” maybe between the cassette and flywheel itself but no visible free hub body in there. From what you’re describing though, my guess is that the cassette itself didn’t seat properly or you maybe didn’t screw in that lock ring all the way.

    • @WaltDoesBikes
      @WaltDoesBikes  2 роки тому +1

      Hi there, thanks for watching. You just need a 12 speed cassette. It doesn’t necessarily have to be SRAM specifically as long as your 12-speed spacing matches up. You can run an 11-speed cassette but you can’t really shift up and down the cassette. The spacing on 11-speed Shimano is different than 12-speed SRAM so your shifting would be awful and yes, you’d likely wear out components (chain, etc) much quicker.
      Long story short if you stay in ERG mode forever and don’t shift… you can do it. If you shift, swap to 12-speed. There are alternatives out there to SRAM cassettes specifically though that are fine trainer cassettes.

      Are you sure you have the correct spacing? The 1mm spacer goes unused if I remember correctly, it’s been a while since I did this. That’s likely the issue as I have no issues, really.

      @@WaltDoesBikes thanks for the reply. Yes correct I didn't use the spacer. Just the xdr freehub, 12 speed SRAM cassette only. My chain is relatively new also only about 800kms on it. It's very strange but I've read online a lot of issues with SRAM rival 12 speed and the kickr core.

      @@MarcraM82 ah, maybe it’s the differentiation between the Core and the whatever version the KICKR smart trainer is, hub spacing maybe? Wouldn’t really make sense, though. Sorry I can’t be of more help!

      @@WaltDoesBikes yeah man thanks a lot for your reply. Unfortunately I think the only fix is for me to set up the derailers for the kickr core but I can't do that as then when I ride it on road it'll be terrible! Only solution is buy a spare bike for it I think.

    Thanks for this video! It's well produced and the explanations are clear, but I got stuck (literally) when trying to remove the freehub of my Kickr Core. Is there anything I need to do right after removing the nut? It doesn't slide right out like yours: ua-cam.com/video/zKJR2HkEYWQ/v-deo.html Thanks for any help!

      Shoot, tbh I don’t know. I did not have that problem. I wonder if you need to try and jostle it back and forth? There are those teeth that latch onto the actual internals that may be hung up?

      Sorry for the delay. No I haven't :-( Still running my old bike on it in the meantime. Hope you'll get more luck on your side! @@dandeto1834
