as a much older cyclist former racer / coach, the best advice I could forward would be to go to France &/or Italy or Belgium & race in their amateur level races. You'll need an international license which for me was easy with dual citizenship I could just race in France with less red tape. The learning experience in Europe will clarify why if you're serious about reaching Cat I & beyond, you need to know where the more difficult opponents will be from... & in Cat I races here stateside, you will race against top level euros who are aiming for the jump to the Euro Pro ranks. those are the guys you need to measure yourself against in races to understand the difference & where you need to focus to minimize weaknesses & build the needed strenghts. Just a few weeks in Europe will build race savy, fitness & the confidence that you can succeed... Without saying the best way & least expensive road to racing in Europe would be to make it onto the US team but why am I emphasizing racing against Euros & going overseas ? It is the top level & being a top level Cat II is one thing but reaching the level of Cat I & to be highly competitive & earn points will demand for you to review your daily life from work to everyday mundane things. Focus to reach Cat I, not burn out in the difficult process & once there be competitive will need for you to reorganize your life. Hopefully you alsp have a partner whose on board 100% for you..... So Good Luck & I will tune in to these podcasts..

I finally made the jump this year. The keys for me were 1. gym 2. more zone 2 time (lots of 2 a day early morning easy spins on top of all the training I was already doing) and 3. racing more. Racing makes you good at racing.

Thanks for the video. About to upgrade to 12sp AXS, so in the process of swapping hubshells on different wheels and of course the KICKR. Exactly the video I needed! I might suggest that folks grease the XDR threads (between the cassette and the hubshell)? I had one completely bind on me a few years back on my MTB. Ended up requiring new hub components and tossing both the cassette and hubshell on that one. :(
