Man I been looking for a reason why my truck started doing this en thanks to you video I can go end for the problem thanks I had help like you have no idea
Just fixed this issue on my 1977 vette… I thought maybe the flex plate was cracked so I turned it by hand and inspected it carefully. No cracks visible so I ordered a shim kit online that gives it clearance so it doesn’t touch anymore. Noise completely gone and no issues! My starter was made by proform and shims are available
So all this contact does not damage the flywheel or starter itself? In my case, i hate to think about this but i believe my flywheel is gone for ever. Just one thing after another with this car. How do cranking thr vehicle so much while diagnosing a crank no start condition end up up with this now that the no start is actually resolved. These cars feels like some whitchcraft embedded in them sometimes to make u spend spend spend and go nowhere like running on a treadmill
I have this exact issue right now. I keep trying to tell people this but not alot of people have heard of this issue. They automatically jump to "bent rod" or something else. Bent connecting rods and push rods "knock" like hammers. This is more of a ticking noise.
@@Jerry4baker did you find out what was wrong? i have the same dam noise...cant pinpoint where its coming from, i suspect the starter as well but stethascope doesnt pick up on it.
Man this helped out a whole lot. The mechanic l used and just found out that he put my flex plate in loose. And now he acts like he don't know whats wrong
I hate them mechanics, they shouldn’t be allowed to work on peoples cars, Mechanics have a license to kill people/They can just cause problems to your car and you can have a major crash and they will get off scot-free.
Thanks for this!!! Im having the same damn problem on my chevy 350. . . . .Didn't know what it was thought it was rod bearing so i changed them out and problem still there. . . .so now I got an answer.
When I start my car there’s a loud clanking/ grinding noise. Once it is started the car runs perfectly. This started happening out of nowhere. Any idea what it could be?
Did u solved this issue ? Could u plz tell me what was the issue and how can we fix this ? I have the same issue with my Mazda 6 2015 automatic, I have this kind of noise when it’s in idling mode and when the car moves in low rpm
I have the same issue. The flex plate rubbing the starter. It makes the same noise in park, neautral and drive. But the noise goes away in reverse. Don't know why noise goes away in reverse.
Because when you put it in reverse the gear on the starter slides away from the flex plate because of the little jerk.then when you put in forward gear it jerks the gear out ..your problem is a bad spring I the starter and it's not retracting the starter gear back away from the flex plate what everybody here forgets is the gear is. It supposed to even be out where it can rub the flex plate after you let go of the ignition key..it will usually rub if your going uphill like a steep driveway or over railroad tracks but not when going down hill because downhill the gravity helps retract the gear.
I had a guy do that helping me once and tried to tell me i needed a new flex plate come to find out he put it on backwards. And it clearly states on one side. [This side toward engine]. Literally facing towards transmission. Flipped around put trans back in and no sound.
I have this same sound on my 2009 Honda Accord Coupe 2.4L , it grind super hard for about .5 seconds once I start the car then literally goes away while I drive then when I slow down at a light it idles super hard and I hear this same exact sound I replaced the starter motor and still hear this sound.
My 300ci inline 6 shakes a hella lot unless I get to the upper 2500-3000 RPMs. I done checked my distribution and spark plugs and they seem fine. I bet the flexplate is to blame for my rough idle/low RPM.
Hi. I've got a 1998 Nissan Pathfinder, 164,000 miles, 3.3L V6, 5 speed automatic transmission. When it's first started it knocks or rattles for 3 seconds. Then it stops. Once warm it will only do the startup rattle about 50% of the time. Exact same noise returns from about 1,800 to 3,200 RPM and then stops. If I'm going up a hill it won't do it 50% of the time unless I press the gas pedal and cause RPMs to sharply raise. The noise increases with RPMs increasing. The main bearings and rod bearings were changed. Looked good. No rod or crank shaft slop was noted. Oil/filter is new and full. Same with transmission fluid. I've narrowed it down to 4 things based on its part time occurrence: 1. Flex plate? 2. Timing belt tensioner failing (unknown when last changed)? 3. Torque converter? 4. Hydraulic lifters? I have two short videos I recorded it and can share. Thanks!
Have you checked the motor mounts or transmission mount? My truck used to do the same thing and I found out it was a worn motor mount & trans mount that caused the noise.
@@thesetruths1404 Hm by your description it doesn't sound like either. I've had a rod knock before and its a consistent loud clucking sound that speeds up when your accelerating and you can hear it on idle quietly too. It doesn't go away like you've explained. For mine, I think it might be an intake valve issue. If any screws or the flap itself is loose- it can make a sound at certain rpms/throttle that sounds like a card in bike spokes and briefly on start.
@@caraliveagain1202 mines louder than a ticking or card clicking. It seems to be coming from the bottom end nearest the oil pan. And two of the bearings pulled out before by previous owner had wear through the silver, into the copper colored metal underneath.

I have the same sound on my 2011 Buick lacrosse and I’ve seen some metal shavings under hood.. do you think I need to stop driving the car or it’s still drivable?
Does the flex plate need to be replaced or the flywheel??? Does the transmission need to be removed or just moved backed up? Mine makes this exact same sound.😭
@@clearwater9118 flywheels are on manual transmission vehicles, while automatic transmissions use flexplates. In this case, it looks like the flex plate is bad.
@@thewhiteelephant Agreed. Flexplate is not flat. There is too much axial runout on the ring gear, should be no more than about ten thou. Could possibly find the low spot and then shim it a little with a thin washer behind the nearest mounting bolt so that it is not catching the starter pinion any more.

Unless it's cracked loose or you feel vibration all you gotta do is put in a starter shim

Almost spent 2k before I did my own research. I spent 300 in diagnosis at several shops just for me to find out on my own.
I was told it's my transmission but I'm having a feeling it's my starter tapping the flex plate
@@stboxing559 Looks like you are probably right. That flex plate has a slight wobble in the video.

Something to take care off immediately when u heard it otherwise that transmission will have to go down
Sometimes the bendix is broken and it slides into the flywheel and makes that sound but more intermittent

It lifts up the motor, and it doesn’t rub after that

The starter is gonna start slipping’… fairly easy fix
Warped or broken flex plate. It is not straight
Where is the bell housing?😂
Starter is way to close to flex plate starter gear should only contact max 60% of flexplate teeth
They mfg the mounting plate too far forward. They can’t keep spec correctly 😊
Mine is doing the same thing lol, nothing during a rev and sounds like a broken rotating assembly at idle 🤣
Mine does this only when I go 40 mph. I seen the flywheel is missing a tooth. Could that be causing that noise? Anyone know?
Yea

replace the flywheel
How can this be fixed without removing engine
transmission removal

Can I still drive the car like that to get it home??
Yeah just hope pray lol And depends how far home is drove one like that for three years
What causes a flexplate to get bent?
starter
Shim the starter

Remove the transmission
Remove one or the other or both… no other way
Transmissions needs pulled back enough to get to the flex plate
thats nothing, just grind it thru, it will stop eventually (no pun intended)
