I bet you would be surprised how many of us didn't know the teeth are supposed to be square ⏹! Thanks for taking time to do this Video. I don't pretend that I think I can do this kind of repair but I will know what to look for, what to ask the machanic.
But I did replace the Rack & pinion on my miata😊 & yes I was so proud I almost burst! The guy I bought it from patched up the boot but 50 miles from home I was stopping at every gas station to refill it. I spent probably 3 days longer & I watched & read everything I could find.

Your welcome, alot of people/mechanics assume the teeth are good. Takes a few minutes to roll the engine over by hand and inspect every tooth just to be sure they are good.

man this EXACT same thing is happening to my 2000 2500 savana. im serious man I've been through 3 starters myself and thats no lie. Shane Norton just a suggestion my friend do your rear main seal and oil pan gasket all the same time you will already be there. Kill 4 birds with 1 stone my friend. Is will save you in the long run so you won't have to pull this stuff back off. Transmission pan gasket and filter change as well you'll need to drain the transmission fluid to make this job easier. And less messy.

Actually, your starter teeth have what’s called a ‘ lead in ‘ cut into the front edge of the teeth. On a new drive, you will see a two angle cut on each tooth. The reason for this, is to allow smooth engagement of the starter pinion, with the teeth on the flywheel. YES, the flywheel teeth should be square and clean, but not the starter teeth. In the case of a tooth to tooth abutment ( teeth hitting th face and not meshing ) when turning the key, the solenoid continues to compress the heavy engagement spring, behind the one way clutch/starter pinion, so when the electric motor contactor closes, and the starter begins to turn, the pinion is forced into the ring gear by the engagement spring, and a normal start occurs. Burred teeth on the ring gear can work to prevent a smooth engagement. A tedious job, but the solution is to take a points file or similar, and remove the burrs on the front of the teeth where the starter pinion engages them. In the case of a 5.7, there will be four wear spots. After that, take a soft wire brush in a dremel or die grinder, and clean your file work off, do the rest of the teeth if you can also. In the starter, the pinion clutch assembly rides on a set of spiral splines cut into the armature shaft. Some disassembly of the starter is required to get to these. Make sure they are clean and free of grit and lubed with a very light moly grease, same too the mating teeth in the drive, they slide backward and forward on the splines. This will give you a smooth engaging starter, hopefully with none of that disgusting grinding noise, that scares the bejesus out of passers by. Hope this helps. Note, if the ring gear teeth are too far worn away, then a new flexplate/ring gear could be necessary. Just from the vid, yours looks in fair shape.

Thanks for the info I know sometimes videos dont do much justice. Some of those teeth were rounded. Sad that the guy had to go through 3 starters because the shop he took it too failed to look. Once I replaced the correct starter and flexplate all was perfect.

Impressive but this is actually a flexplate. The flywheel is bolted to the engine crankshaft. ... When using a manual transmission and a conventional clutch disk and pressure plate setup . The use of an automatic transmission using a torque converter is flexplate👈

You can also replace it with a lighter one to free up some powwwa. I would suggest a more aggressive friction material and a slightly stronger pressure plate.
You would be surprised how different the car will feel after that. Just be careful because you will rev alot faster and that can become a problem.
Make sure you dont make anything unbalanced.

Omg that’s exactly what I think is wrong with my car. We replace the started but just yesterday it wouldn’t turn again, so we contact our mechanic and he mention the flywheel. Like he knew exactly what was wrong but didn’t bother to suggest it when he change the started. Now my question is there a way to fix the flywheel temporarily just to get the car started and moved ?

Flexplate and flywheels arnt too bad on price. May check your starter and make sure its engaging properly may have to shim it. Make sure your teeth on your flexplate or flywheel isnt messed up if so starter gear could be a little rounded which can cause slippage and grind. As far as the job goes it's not to bad with some help. If you do the job make sure all is good u joints. Etc. Which in this truck I replaced the u joints and the rear main I was already there. Something to check into when Doing this job. You will also need to drain the trans fluid and change pan gasket makes your life alot easier.

I need help with my starter, I have a 2002 chevy express 3500 cutaway 5.7. Each time I want to start the engine I have to let the starter down half way, then rebolt it to the block and the engine will start like new. If I dont drop the starter it will grind and not spin the motor. I have shimmed it, used new bolts and I have concluded the starter must be shifting from side to side because it cannot go up and down. back in the old days we ised to have dtarter brackets but none for this engine...any suggestions as to how to fix my problem?

The starter motor was getting enough "grip" to trun the flexplate but when the bendix retracts back into the starter moter it throws the alignment off for another start...IT IS THE WRONG STARTER but right GM part number.
