What an interesting little camera! I wish the gx80 had the flip up screen like this one.

If it does what you need, and you won't miss the features available on newer models, then it's still worth it. Or consider the recent models of the Sony RX100 series.

Thanks for the detailed review. I have been looking for a compact mirrorless cam for quite some time now, as I climb the mountains a lot and DSLRs are heavy. I’m years too late for lumix GM1 and GM5, its now so hard to find.
Do you think GX850 is a good alternative? Or do you recommend something else for nature stills and videos? (brand doesn’t matter, but budget does hehe)
Thank you for your kind words and subscription. I know what you mean - I have a GH1 that remains a valuable member of my camera shelf. Although it does have much of the firmware goodness that makes Panasonic cameras interesting, it is lacking a viewfinder which slightly reduces its value in my estimation.

Shame about the overheating. I was wondering if this could be a great replacement for the LX100 as I would really like the "vlogging" touchscreen. Maybe I'll stick with the LX100 for another year...
It is a problem with smaller cameras, and yes, a huge negative here.

What's the confusion? Either is a good choice. Decide with your wallet, your hand (which fits better) and your brand preference or style/design preference.
Hello I really like your reviews. What would you recommend as alternative to this camera? The overheating makes me nervous. But I haven't seen other mirrorless at this price point? Sometimes inflated prices in Philippines. Can you recommend something I can look into? Compact camera, photo quality and decent video for my travel plus longevity, changeable lens. Thank you good sir for advice.

This is the generic problem with shooting 4K video with small and inexpensive (and sometimes not so inexpensive cameras. Try the Canon Rebel or SL2, they're usually affordable and are pretty good at video.
Maarten Heilbron between gx850 and fujifilm Xa3 which one would you recommend for travel? Thank you. Dslr are sort of bulky for travel, I have one but it's for beginners too nikon d3400
Thank you for the video. Do you know if a variable fps rate (VFR) can be set for video recording? Panasonic has it in their GH line. This feature is handy for quick timelapses done in video mode.

Hi Martin! Fine video. Maybe you can help me decide. Lumix GX850 or GM1? The GX850 looks great, but I'll rarely use 4K video, and I have large hands. I'm using an Olympus E-PL6, which is handy. And have a variety of M43 lenses. What would you choose as a used purchase? Thank you.
Thanks for your kind words, I think it's best if you can hold each in your hand to determine whether they're suitable. I would not let a feature that I'm not going to use influence my decision, unless there was a large price impact.
Hi Maarten! Do you think this is better than the Olympus Pen E-PL9? I've been doing some research to start a camera which I would mainly use for travelling. I just like the different settings and filters in this camera but really not sure if this one is better or the pen e-pl9 for starters.
Great question, as it's one I'm working on myself - I have reviews of the Pen9 and M50 in progress and I'm trying to compare them. Unless the video time/overheating issue troubles you, I would prefer the GX850 - the Pen9 is just a little quirky for me, but that's an early impression. If you can wait for me to finish the review ...

Is overheating a problem with 4k only, or all recording modes?
Primarily 4K, but if the temperature is high, it could happen even with stills (not that it happened to me).
Hi Maarten! Its me again from your Lx100 video. I bought the lx100 thanks to your advice but sadly it fell and the lens was broken. Now im looking for an ILC camera. One thing i wasnt aware of the lx100 was its poor video stabilization, how about the gx850`s video stabilization? Is it good? Can it compete with the gx85 ibis? Thanks!
For video I would not count the in-camera stabilization on any model as acceptable. Use a tripod or a gimbal if you need stabilization.

there is no manual ISO exposure for Manual, Aperture, Shutter mode in this camera.. you can only change shutter and aperture , your iso will remain auto in any mode of this camera,, if anyone have same issue or they resolved it so please tell me

Probably not. An entry level Canon with a high quality lens would be a better choice.

How do you stop overheating problem ? Does it mean it only gives 5minute of shoot. How long can it take to restart.? I am a complete novice with a camera and your video on this model is very helpful as I have just bought this camera. Thank you for a detailed demonstration.
There is no real solution to this, although you'll find lots of advice from chilling your battery to shading the camera in sunny situations. The issue here is the small size and the processing power required. You'll find it happens less quickly with HD instead of 4K. Wait about 5 minutes, and if you have a small ice pack handy, (those you use in coolers are best) that can help.

Can you control iSO in video mode though? because i already set my iso limit to 1600, but somehow in video it used up to 3200 ISO
I don't have the camera to verify that, but would recommend you set the ISO manually.

Which is the best prime for gx850 for travel photography. Lumix 14 mm 2.5 pancake or the Lumix 25 mm 1.7?
My preference is the wider field of you, but you may prefer to have better low light performance.

I'm not sure what you mean by exposure time (speed) - but if you're referring to shutter duration, yes that (and aperture) can be set in manual mode.
@@MaartenHeilbron Sorry for the bad translation. That just what I meant, the shutter duration...I mean, the GX850 does not Video mode in the dial but you can set that parameters puttin the manual mode and pushing the red button, Isn it?

In another review I found that shutter speed and aperture can't be controlled. Are you sure it can be manually adjusted in GF9? Because I really want to buy this camera since it is really cheap these days.
Does this camera have the same soft shutter as the GX85?

Slimming mode - I'm almost sold!
It just struck me that the use of 35mm camera lens sizes as a comparison (everyone does it of course) is somewhat anachronistic. I'm one of those who grew up with 35mm, but with new generations this comparison would seem to be less and less meaningful or familiar.
I think you need to invent a new uom that can be used for lenses no matter what the sensor size, Maarten.

Agreed, I’d prefer a slightly more universal description, like angle of view.
Yeah, slimming mode is a laugh! Angle of view would seem to be the logical universal unit. However, since you would still have to factor in the crop factor to compare aperture across sensor sizes, and crop factor squared to compare ISO, using angle of view wouldn't really simplify things much.
I should have tired harder to demo it, my general observation on slimming was that if it works it's minimal. I'd have preferred a fun house effect.

This depends a great deal on what you plan to do, how much you are prepared to spend (it's not just a camera, you'll want lenses) and which brand you prefer.
Maarten Heilbron thank you sir for your reply. Planning to use for family travel vlog and love travel light. My country here M50 and A6300 only difference of Usd 75, so price wise is not a prob. M50 and Panasonic 850 have flip up screen while Sony has better 4K and log for video editing. Really is dilemma
The magic word was vlog - take the M50, as it's screen faces forward. I would not consider SLog a significant advantage - it's too tricky to configure if time is short. Pick the right location (ie, not one where you're in the shade and the scene is in the sun) and use ND.

Possibly, it depends what you are looking for.
How long would we use a camera like this before upgrading to a newer model? How long would we use ANY camera these days.Three years maybe? And just think how much thought and work has gone into the making of it! Technical masterpiece to-day, old junk tomorrow. Thanks for the video, by the way. Too bad about the overheating.
I think that three to five years is reasonable. Most of us don't use our cameras enough to wear them out, so typically they get replaced because we got tired of it, or very excited by a newer model. Some of the small differences in either low light or focus speed don't really have much impact on the majority of our photographs - but somehow we get convinced that we need them and upgrade. Always my pleasure - I was very surprised both by the time limits (many Panasonic models have none) and the overheating.
Presumably both are to keep the price low. Solving the overheating might be costly, and If I'm not mistaken there are extra taxes on cameras with unlimited video. It would be rather silly to pay the tax if overheating wouldn't allow it anyway.
Solving overheating is only costly in terms of size. There may be taxes on longer lengths in some jurisdictions but 1) I'm not in those jurisdictions; 2) that limit is 30 minutes, not 5 and 3) Panasonic doesn't seem to care about that on many other models.
As to 3) Aren't those other models a good deal more expensive?
As to 2) You're right. Then maybe the limit is related to file size? I'm only guessing under the assumption that Panasonic isn't making totally irrational decisions.
As to 1) Not that it's relevant here, but as far as I understand manufacturers who do implement the 29:59 limit, do it globally - i.e. not only in the jurisdictions that have these taxes. I'm not sure why.
(Possibly because people travel. And if a Canadian tourist turned up in Amsterdam with an unlimited camera for which no taxes had been paid, perhaps there could be trouble?)
As to the overheating, I imagine that Panasonic considers a small size important for this camera. And as I'm no technical expert I don't know whether it wouldn't be possible to solve the issue with some expensive tiny hi-tech cooling system. I realize I'm out of my depth here, but do ALL small 4K cameras suffer from overheating?
3) yes, they are more expensive, but they're also not this small. 2) a 5min 4K file comes in at 3.53GB - so that might be an issue, but that's why SDXC was developed. And this is not an issue for Panasonic on other models.
I don't think tourists are going to get hassled - but grey marketers might. Tourists aren't importing cameras, they typically take them home again. Hacks to eliminate the limit have been created for some models.
All small cameras that record 4K suffer from overheating. Let's note that Sony's RX100 IV and V also have a 5 minute limit for 4K.

The limitation is either 30minutes or 4GB file size. As this camera uses a variable bit rate, it's hard to determine the exact time.
so a 64 GB extreme pro card would not help me?

Certainly it would There are a number of issues that might have you prefer one over the other. I like the larger size and the fully articulated screen and mic input on the G7, but the GX85 has stabilization, which makes a difference for video. Hard call.
Hi, sorry to say but the recording limit of FHD 30p is 5 hrs, not 5 min. ;) Otherwise excellent review. I'm gonna buy this camera as a beginner's camera for my brother.

Yes, it's lost none of its appeal since I reviewed it. However, if you do want the latest autofocus/eyeautofocus technology, consider the Sony A6400 ua-cam.com/video/JisbELHAXBM/v-deo.html or Fujifilm X-T30 ua-cam.com/video/AW2sDwqnUyo/v-deo.html.
No clean hdmi output :-(

Hi Maarten, I bought a GX880(Known as GF10 here) recently. Your video was one of the reason because the camera seems like more than enough for my use. I know you would have returned your camera and please do ignore if you are unable to help. I took a few videos yesterday and realised that it was kinda of choppy. I am not sure why is that. Is it due to the SD card or anything wrong im doing? Its recorded at 4K 24p. Here is the video: ua-cam.com/video/nHpWRj-O0qM/v-deo.html . The train looks like its skipping some frames or is this normal? Perhaps I am expecting too much from this beginners camera 😁.
I don't see the defect, the motion looks smooth to me on the UA-cam video. You could do us all a favour by editing the first minute from the recording.
If you are recording at 30 or 60 frames, with a shutter speed of 1/60, the motion should look smooth - a faster shutter speed may make some motion look choppy.
As for your SD card, as long as it has a write speed of about 90MBps or higher you should not have problems.

As for the shutter speed, this camera offers no manual settings when it comes to video so I guess I am stuck with slightly choppy video.

@@MaartenHeilbron No worries, Maarten 😊. The GX880 is similar to GX850 when it comes to videos, there is no option to change the shutter speed or ISO. I am only able to change the EV before I press record. I guess that was done intentionally by Panasonic so that the camera can be sold at a lower price point but I knew this when I purchased the camera, so I'm ok with it. 😀
For those who are using GX880/GF10, if your video is choppy, turn off the stabilization. Experimented with it and now after turning it off, seems fine.

Oh. Here in Canada and the US, this camera is quite a bargain.
B&H want's $547.99 - I don't know if that's a bargain.
In Denmark it seems to be a little cheaper: $439.49

For me MFT camera Lumix LX100 is a bargain for sure. Its cheaper today with respectable specs.
