  • Gamer Ahmer: Watch Out For These RED FLAGS At Gaming Conventions...
Retro gaming refers to playing and collecting video games, consoles, and accessories from previous generations, typically from the 1970s to the early 2000s. This nostalgic hobby encompasses a wide range of systems, such as the Atari 2600, Nintendo Entertainment System (NES), Sega Genesis, and original PlayStation. Enthusiasts appreciate the classic gameplay mechanics, pixelated graphics, and unique soundtracks that defined an era before modern advancements in gaming technology. Retro gaming not only celebrates the history and evolution of video games but also provides a means to preserve and experience the charm and challenge of older titles.

Nintendo is a renowned Japanese multinational consumer electronics and video game company. Founded in 1889 as a playing card company, Nintendo has evolved into one of the most influential and iconic players in the gaming industry. They are best known for creating beloved franchises such as Super Mario, The Legend of Zelda, Pokémon, and Donkey Kong, as well as innovative gaming consoles like the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES), Game Boy, Wii, and Switch. Nintendo's focus on family-friendly gaming experiences, innovation, and nostalgia has endeared them to millions of gamers worldwide.
Sega is a renowned video game company that has produced a variety of consoles over the years. One of its most popular consoles is the Sega Genesis, known as the Mega Drive outside of North America. Released in the late 1980s, it was Sega's 16-bit console and competed with the Super Nintendo Entertainment System (SNES). The Genesis offered a strong lineup of games, including Sonic the Hedgehog, Streets of Rage, and Golden Axe. It also had add-ons like the Sega CD and the Sega 32X, although they weren't as successful.

I was going to mention this too. We went to our first convention last year, traveled from Atlantic Canada to Southeast Game exchange. SEGE was an amazing experience and they did a phenomenal job. We were special guests and got in early BUT never even gave it a thought about buying games before the convention officially started. It felt gross seeing BIG Tubers scoop up all the deals to fill a store or for reselling. Had their entire trip paid for while ticket holder stood in line to get what was left. I know it's common practice BUT if you can't bring people to the events then you can't have an event.

Not having prices on things is probably my biggest peeve. While I love talking to people, I don't really want to waste my time asking or waiting for the vendor to either look up the price or call someone to verify. A great customer interaction is always being upfront with what you're selling your items for and not making your customer feel like they aren't important enough to offer a basic level of transparency. Unless it's a game I'm absolutely looking for, no prices on games means I'm usually moving on.

I went to Too Many Games over the weekend and one table had a DS game that didn't have a price tag like the rest of their other games on the table but it had a dot sticker with "50" on it, so I held it up and said "is that the right price because the sticker is different from your other games?"
He goes "let me double check"...(Looks it up on his phone)..."that's actually supposed to be 55, thanks for bringing it to my attention" then proceeds to change the sticker price in front of me
I just walked away...like if it's not selling at 50 what makes you think it'll sell at 55?

Usually what I do, is make a list of games that I want to get before the convention. About a few days before the convention, I go on Pricecharting and put the price next to each game in my list. I hate when the vender makes comments like “cmon man I have kids to feed” when you’re not sure if you want to buy something from them. That’s just not right. I also don’t like with certain conventions that won’t bring you out as a guest, so you spend your own money for ,gas, food, travel, hotel, ticket, then they try and get you to do videos for them or tell you what to shoot. They value their product but have 0 value for yours.

Really glad you touched on this subject! Part of the reason we go to conventions (or at least myself) is hopes that we will get a better deal than simply going to ebay or a local store. Yeah, not the case. Finding actual good deals on stuff at a convention in my limited experience is a needle in a haystack situation. I will stand there or walk off hoping they don't notice me and look up prices on things I'm interested in before I decide to walk back and continue looking.
Also 100% with you on the lack of pricing. I even have an actual store in my area (I'll say it, Capital Games in Gahanna OH. DGAF if they see this) who does not price the majority of their items. You have to ask about each and every one while they will sit there right in front of you and look up the price on ebay then mark it up 30-50% from there. They don't even attempt to hide the fact they're doing that either. That crap drives me absolutely mad.

    • @GamerAhmer
      @GamerAhmer  27 днів тому +2

That’s insane! That’s terrible! I hate when things aren’t priced.
And I’ve noticed that I’m finding more and more deals at conventions. Just have to look at a bunch of booths/tables and see where the best deals are. Certain “rare” items won’t have the best deals but a bunch will luckily.
      But that’s really a shame

Typically… business or convention owners do not want to change because they like being the boss and do not want to give up any bit of control or use an idea from someone that “doesn’t matter”.
It’s one of the biggest reasons many of these people can never work for a company. They will always be the common denominator in the reason why “failure was someone else’s fault”😂.

Conventions are a good chunk of my collecting for the year. I almost never pay "ebay prices" because I know what I'm looking for and I have a good idea what the current fair market value is. I know a lot of people do not so this is great advice. Most game conventions that I attend I believe are fair in their pricing for what they offer. But as you mentioned, it's not just about finding cool things to buy and the activities offered, but the people you get to see and for me, many I see throughout the year I only see at these conventions. And I enjoy every second of it. I'm sure I will see you again at another convention or 2 yet again this year. Good video! Take care!

Price your stuff and if the market fluctuates. You should still make a profit, and the studious buyer can still get below the market price. Make your money on Volume.

Sorry if you can't spend the 10 seconds to look up and price each game beforehand I will not do business with you. It should be a rule that everything for sale has a price on it.
Also the amount of games I saw that were grossly marked up was crazy.
The amount of people getting in early before the crowds and buying up huge amounts of games is what ticks me off. We drove over 6 hours to MGC only to see some youtubers in early with big boxes of games. I know money is money, but they should limit these people to 1 copy per person or something before the conventions open. There's a reason we rarely leave cons with games. 🤭😉
If a table has no prices, we walk, every time. If you can't be bothered to price your wares, we can't be bothered to look.
Fortunately conventions DO have so much else to offer and that's why we showcase events the way we do in our videos, to show there's often something for everyone and more than simply what's assumed and expected.

It’s been a year but I remember one of the games being Megaman anniversary collection which was around the $10 mark and 4 booths had it for $60. My buddy picked it up for $10 eventually. And another was a Mega Man PSP game. Might have been around the $10 - $15 range at that time. And once again several booths had it for $60-$75 and he scored it for less than $20. I was looking for SNES games and some of the cheap sports titles were marked up. They had ripped labels and all. I was able to find deals but after looking over majority of the convention. Another buddy had a list of games he was looking for and I remember going around shocked at his list and the listed prices at the convention. In some of the clips I show some of the “rarer” games $300+ overpriced and some even more than that.

@@GamerAhmer I understand why sellers will do mark ups, since collecting have been becoming so mainstream and everyone sees those terrible articles about “how your old video games will make you a millionaire” and thinks it’s 100% true so they go into their old games that have been in the attic for decades and think that what they have is gold even though in reality it’s not. Those same people go to these conventions and possibly others that are curious so it’s possible that seller could fund someone to actually buy it for that high of a price.
I really do think that eventually game collecting will die and they want to make as much as they can from potential buyers before the bubble breaks. In defense of vendors, they have to pay a fee to the con to have a table. So that's an extra expense for them.

@@GamerAhmer I will say, as someone who has some experience vending at cons...while i have definitely seen a lot of the same red flags you mention, the con organizers themselves really have zero control over the vendors, prices, attitudes etc. They just rent the table and are generally hands off the whole show (maybe this will be different at TMG next week). That being said, the tables are usually $600-$900 to rent and so that could be why vendors are so determined to make their money back. As a vendor though, I would love to see the entry fee for these events come down so more people can enter the show and have more money to spend with us!! I will let you know how it goes, and again, think about coming to long island retro in august! Everyone has an amazing tme there and the organizers are wonderful people. @@Gamechangermods I definitely understand that. I’ve talked to vendors and event management as well. Some are starting to not invite vendors back if they are doing shady practices. When I asked about a few things and got brushed aside that was the notion I took that those people just don’t care and only care about the money. These events should be an amazing experience and people shouldn’t feel bad about it. I’m glad to hear about that convention though and I’ll definitely check it out at some point.
