This is the first time I've seen someone mention the legal terms about starting an online shop. I usually only see the basic info, so this was actually quite helpful!
I've been watching these types of videos for like five months now trying to accumulate enough knowledge to feel comfortable enough opening my art shop. This is by far the most motivated I've been to do so simply from your, "You're never gonna have everything ready. Just do it and allow yourself to make mistakes as you go." Thank you for this, you fucking rock.
Tip no. 1 made me smile bc that is what I'm planning to do asap. I wanna sell printables first to save up some money to buy the tools i need ugh i feel so relieved that my plan isn't actually dumb phew
1) Add up all your business expenses: URL, website, web hosting, materials, fees (in you go with a service like Etsy), packaging, shipping, taxes, anything else you can think of. 2) Add up all you’re living expenses. You can decided from there when to go full-time. That's pretty obvious. Hundreds of variables. You need to decide which path is best for you through research and experience.
I have no intention of starting an on line store, however, I hope everybody out there who wants to, PLEASE LISTEN TO THIS VIDEO. So helpful and such good tips and advice.
Jordan, you're awesome. I have watched your channel for a LONG time now and you are honestly the one who inspired me to open my Etsy Shop! I suffer from severe chronic illness and always wanted to run my own art business in some way but never thought I'd be able to and if I was able never thought it would at all be sought after. But it's been a little over a month of my shop being open and I have 31 sales! You have truly been an inspiration and encouragement! Thank you.🍃
thank you so much for this video, jordan! i have always dreamed of becoming a self employed artist, however, i have always dealt with major imposter syndrome as well as feeling really discouraged that my art is not how i want it yet. but listening to your story makes me certain that i can do it as well! i recently launched my patreon i am so happy that i was able to take that step! i love you and your work! 💕
Dude you are the only person who has explained the tax and legal side of this! Thank you!!! It’s seriously terrifying to think about screwing the taxes up and owing thousand in April. Thank you for the break down and app rec 🥺🙌
Most really successful people have failed at some point. But they believed in themselves and what they wanted to achieve and kept on going. That's an import lesson right there, so you were smart. You make good points. Thanks.
This was (after the many i have watched) one of the actual helpful helpful guides. Others talk about buying things and cost of items and such but this is the dirty work that nobody talked about in the creation of the business. The legality of how its made and things you've actually done to help make ur business. Thank you so so so so much!
I'm 74 and make beautiful books. I have wondered how to really start doing this for monetary gain! This was soooo helpful! The only negative is getting back on social media. Ugh! But thanks so much!!!
This was so helpful and had things I needed to hear. I’ve been holding myself back because I’m waiting until I know everything or I’m happy with my work... but waiting just prolongs it further. I also really appreciated your insight about taxes and such. I’ve done some research, but it’s hard where to find good answers sometimes.
Thank you this was really helpful. It just really goes to show that consistency and perseverance are really the key to getting to where you want to be. 💚
This was soo helpful, would love a series on this with topics like copyright, international shipping, how to start selling prints if you don't have/afford inventory. Thank you for this video
HI Jordan! Thank you so much for this video!!! One of my dreams is to start an online shop. I am currently saving for an ipad and apple pencil so that I can start drawing digitaly on procreate. Then, my plan is to get a job as soon as I turn 14 and save as much as I can so I can buy the equipment that I need to make stickers, and other pretty things!!! You are one of my biggest inspirations and this video really helped! Love you!
This video is perfect for me right now! I finally started to understand that I have to keep making art and figure it out as I go. It’s really a process and I’m excited about sharing my art journey. 😁
I will try sticking to your advice because even I am thinking about opening my online shop in the coming years. Thank you so much. You are a great inspiration, both artistically and in general. Love you.
This is actually really helpful, the part about telling your story. I have seen other videos of people doing thousands of dollars worth of business their first month on Etsy, and it is totally unrealistic. They acted like you launch a shop and boom money rolls in. You also talked about having a whole social media presence that takes years to build, which they don't mention. You cover soooo much realistic stuff, I don't feel like you are trying to sell me on 1. How awesome you are 2. To buy your online courses. Thank you for being authentic!!
I’m just now watching this video, but you are truly inspirational. I understand everything you are saying. Thank you for giving other people confidence to not put it off, to just do it. We all start small. You are truly a role model! God bless you! 😭💓
This is what I am looking for. I am thinking whether ebay or etsy for selling my mini paintings. Also, debating whether I am ready for this or not. But based on your words, dont wait for too long. Hihi. Thank you for your words of wisdom about starting a business. May God continue to use you to be an inspiration to others and bless all the works of your hands. ❤️
This video had the best and most wise tips! It definitely teaches and offers the best for your audience to learn from. I even added this to my inspiration playlist :) this is the first video I've seen of yours but I'm definitely sticking around!
Thank you so much, Jordan! You answered so many questions, and even crushed my roadblock of when to do actually get started: now! That one bit alone was priceless. More of these, please. Bright blessings.
The neat thing about withholding your own income tax is you get the option to earn the interest made off of your own withholding as it sits in your own bank account, and not the bank account of some employer.
thank you so much for your kind helpful and needed words. ive done so much research and i realized that i have a bad habit of dreaming rather than taking the steps to doing. youre an inspiration!! 🏹☁️🥯🥛🌾🐚♥️
I've been owning my business on the Etsy and started my UA-cam channel very recently. Your movement and artworks are truly motivational and inspirational for me! Thank you so much, Jordan! 🥰😍
Best advice, Just get started! If you Don't get started, we'll keep procrastinating and marking excuses why we're not ready! This is exactly my problem! I feel like my art isn't ready for people to appreciate.
thank you for the honest and detailed guide jordan! Following you through your own journey has made me feel a lot more confident and better about where I am with my art and my art business, and I'm so grateful!♥️
In the first year of opening my business I didn't go to a legal office because I didn't even know if this would work out. After that I registered and now doing it full time
i've been so overwhelmed with opening my own business so please make it a series!! This is so helpful and I feel a bit relieved after watching so thank you!!!
Thank you for this video. It made me realize how beneficial it is to keep moving forward on the creative path to get where you want to be. It may not feel right in the beginning but it will get there over time. Our brains always see what we want the now
thanks for the video! really helpful and inspiring! i m at the point thinking if i should put effort in to it since crafting is my hobby but definitely help me thinking !
I've been building up my small art business for just over a year now. I teach watercolour and gouache tutorials on youtube and skillshare at the moment but Ive been wanting to get prints, stickers and other products made with my artwork on it for a while. Im currently learning how to make prints of my art but I could do with a good printer (I only have a regular printer for now)
Thank you for sparing the time to create such an informative video. I'm sure it will be pretty much helpful to a lot of people. You seem to be so calm.. that made me watch this video without worrying too much about the complexity of running a business.
i would love to see another video on shipping! your personal process, how you like to decorate (as i, and i’m sure you feel that the pretty packaging is just as exciting as the item itself!), etc !
I found your video really helpful, thanks so much for taking the time to talk about your process! A lot of people don't talk about the finance/legal stuff.
Thanks for this! I spent the whole quarantine trying to start a shop (for the second time) and my personal struggle is that I feel like my art is not good enough. I do stickers as well... and feel like my graphic design background made my style very generic and mainstream, because I was told how to create things for massive brands and platforms and I worked in this business for a very long time. I just wish my style was more personal and creative and it had like a personal imput instead of being so standard and anonymous... I do envy a bit artists that can, but now I think I'll just start and try to offer what I have and see where this takes me, hopefully I will find my own style that I am happy with. Thanks :)
I feel very self conscious about my art too. I think it's nothing important. I'm an art student and the fact that I am pressured into making art has ruined it for me and it feels like I don't know what I'm doing anymore. But I still want to be able to make art and possibly sell it, just on my own terms, instead of burning out :/
@@vayermenoviko0linixD Burnout and other peoples expectations really put pressure on artists, it is not like other jobs. Thanks for your help on this subject as I am an artist myself and was curious about selling online. Wish me luck and Plus I really like your stuff. Might have to order in the near future. Thanks again
Thank you for sharing! ❤ You have a very friendly conversational vibe to your videos, it's very relaxing! Like going for a coffee with a long time friend 🥰
Thank you so much for your video. You seem so kind and heartwarming and I loved hearing about your story. Always helps me to hear about other people starting their business and all your experiences (especially could relate to "just start" - I think following the inspiration is SO freeing and everything else will fall into place). Thank you and all the best and love to you 💕
Thank you for the insight. When you talked about starting to sell your art online, i totally got that. I’ve been discouraged by the fact that I dont even think my own art is good enough. Nowadays i just go through some for about 1 minute, bcos that is all the time you need to learn from other people’s art. Otherwise, its just about learning from your mistakes and not stopping even tho you feel like it. Thanks for all that other info, i was getting concerned about those. Lots of love
thank for the video , I have started an online store to sell my sketches as well but I couldn't renew it for anther year as I have sold almost nothing through it , but I still believe that the online store is a good idea after following the proper steps !
Yes! Thanks you SO much for making this video. I'm in that stage right now and make lists everyday only to look at them blankly and still don't know what to do first lol. Always love your vids, and thanks again for sharing this info!! Stay well :)
i just opened my shop website today, then you uploaded this video. omg can’t think of other words. thank yo for this, Jordan. you’re a big inspiration to me and my art 🥺☁️
You are so kind and sweet. Thank you for sharing and it was definitely helpful. Im trying to grow my business, that’s where I’ve fallen short because im not good at selling myself 😥 ill have to brainstorm and find a creative way
Thanks so much for this video! I really wanted to jump right into my own site but I think Etsy will be a great first stepping stone like you mentioned!
Missing your videos and thank you for sharing. Looking forward to that video on tools that you use. And how to setup your office to house all your stock and packaging!
Jordan like i just want to thank youuu because i wanted to open my own clothing store but i just wanted after this i am thinking to open it very soon ... So thank you for the inspiration 😃😃
I'm 17 yr old student . I don't have money right now but I will start my business at my 20's so yeah this video help me alot thanks for posting .... First time I'm watching your video. :)
I'm so glad I ran across you today. I'm a textile artist and I want to make a website for my work. I also plan to sell on Etsy. I checked out Shopify and will probably use them when I can afford it. But for now I want to thank you so much for pointing me in the right direction. Have an excellent day and stay safe.
This is so helpful. Thank you. I am new to the whole buissiness thing. It can be really overwhelming. The one part that helps me feel better is the baby steps parts. There is encouragment, that a new artist can start right away and learn little by little. I like that. Trying to understand everything at once is so overwhelming. It is nice to learn that one can just be gradual. I also like the the part on social media. I have some experience with this, even if I don't have a huge following. It is nice to know it doesn't have to be one big ad. My appraoch is just to release full blown content online. I don't use a pay wall on any of it. A most basic example is to post a picture. I just post the picture on social media. Then I give a little bit of text to describe what is in the picture. The part on bookeeping is also nice. I am not a fan of this to be honest. It is boring but pracitical. It is nice to know I am not alone in my disdain. It is nice to see an artist do this. That gives me encouragment that I could do this too.I would totally hire an accountant if I could afford it.
Yes please! I would love for this to be a series with more info on how you run an art biz! Specifically I would love to know how you create such beautiful packaging for your stickers and washi tapes? In that little clip of you packing up the order I saw it and they look really professional!
Thank you very much for sharing your experience. You are very inspiring! I know this is not exactly a business but thanks to you I learned how to make zines and I dared to spread my poetry into zines around the university. I really wanted to thank you from the bottom of my heart your content and art! You are such an idol! 💜
Thanks for making this. Even with broad, general categories of info, it's very helpful. I've struggled with organizing and planning, and this demystifies the process a bit and gives me an organized starting point for my own research. I applaud your generous spirit and attitude that is supportive of other artists trying to make a living from their art.
Tee spring and red bubble are great too, if you do art, they print to order and handle shipping and listing is free on teespring and there are various options
This is the first time I've seen someone mention the legal terms about starting an online shop. I usually only see the basic info, so this was actually quite helpful!
You don't need an entity for selling art. Just use your SSN . Don't mess with this till you make money.

Okaaay finally someone give me those specific tiiips.. i am glaaad.. finally now i can start my own business.. thaaank uu jordaaan 💖
In some places USPS will have package pickup available. Saves time waiting in line at the post office.
