Build & Animate an ULTRA-REALISTIC Diorama - Realistic Scenery Vol.16

- If you’ve ever wanted to build a realistic diorama and actually have vehicles and bicycle riders moving along the road then this video is a must see!
You can download the 3D printer files to recreate these scenes from my website:
www.bouldercre...
In this video I’ll show you every step I took to create this fantastic diorama, including the building, working road with vehicles and bike riders and all the tiny details that fill the scene. It’s all there.
The Magnorail is the main feature of this diorama and this particular starter kit was sent to me from Clyde at Magnorail Oz.
Using the Faller car system is not always the easiest way to get era specific cars running as the size of the car is limited to what battery and motor will fit, the magnorail can work with any vehicle from O scale down to N and possibly Z scale.
The main limitation is vehicles that are too big as weight can be an issue if there are any inclines for big vehicles larger than O scale.
Check out www.MagnorailOz...
Some of the details I use have their own dedicated tutorials and I only briefly describe the process in this video, for a more detailed description you can find the additional UA-cam tutorials here:

3D printer files, for those of you interested in printing the files I use in this project you’ll find them on my website, just be aware that I used an Anycubic Photon to print these files which is a very high detail resin printer, trying to print these files with an FDM 3D printer and not a resin 3D printer will very likely give a less than desirable result.
A little story for people who actually read the description… thank you
On the day I was taking photos it was pouring down with rain, I was waiting all morning for a break in the weather and when it did come I had about 45 minutes to get the shots, in the final shot 2 shots of the video you can see the rain coming over the hills, about 2 minutes after those shots it started pouring down again.
I would have liked to get better photos before finishing this video but due to the tropical cyclone nearby it was making it very difficult. When the weather eventually passes and we get some decent weather I’ll take some extra footage and post it onto the website.
The music used was downloaded from Epidemic sound.

Hey all,
I'm currently working on my next video and also moving house.
While waiting for my next video, I've created a new Instagram account for my fans to post completed dioramas you've created (Conditions apply).
You can check out the latest activity via: instagram.com/bouldercreekrailroad/
See you soon.
Cheers,
Luke
Luke I have a few suggestions but those are different from what you normally do
Thank you!!
If you ever want assistance in Australian Powerline designs. Parts and correct terminology. Send me a message.
hope moving goes smoothly!!! great video. ✔
You can order build your maid together
Legit didnt realize the first shot was a model for a few seconds.
lol... awesome 😉 that's about as good a compliment that you can give!
yeah, its good that he's now made a livley town like scene :)
same
I couldn't either tbh
@@BoulderCreekRailroad I like how you film your models outside as they to blend right in with the surroundings. That's talent with filming, let alone the model work.
45 Minutes.. perfect for a calm sunday :)
Nice, I hope you enjoy watching 😀
Exactly!
39:29 “Once the foam was removed, I set the tree on fire”
Going for that ultra Australian bushfire realism I see
@John Dough oof
@John Dough Non-Humerous, Refrained from chuckling.
No you didn't 😭
Oh hell no you did not
It's amazing how the scenery comes alive with natural light.
True! that makes the biggest difference!
This tree is pretty good.
*lights tree on fire*
Excellent and captivating work as usual. Seems like time flew by watching you work.
lol... thanks so much, glad you liked the tutorial 😃
" this tree looks okay but I'll make a few minor improvements..."
*SETS THE TREE ON FIRE*
okay Luke, stop flexing on me with you sick bottle flips
ha ha... I totally didn't expect the one with the helmar super tac glue bottle to work... and then it just bounced right off the table and landed upright!
@@BoulderCreekRailroad im just gonna make a compilation of your bottle flips
@@shuckalax1104 that was a great idea
I do not make models. I have no desire to make models. Yet I just watched a FORTY-FIVE MINUTE video about how to make a diorama, and loved EVERY MINUTE. I just love watching the details come together to make a scene that legitimately looks 100% real. I had to watch the finished results at the beginning and end and keep telling myself "that's a model!" because it just blew my mind. Thank you so much for your incredibly interesting videos! Even people who don't make models enjoy them, which is high praise.
Have a look at the astounding œuvres of the master miniaturists of France and Germany over the past several centuries.
"I wasn't completely satisfied with the tree, so I set it on fire." priceless : )
LOL ... yeah. Wouldn't it have been easier to build that tree from scratch instead ?
well that escalated quickly...
As you do
Maybe next time you could just T.P. the tree instead. 😜
Realistic Scenery Vol. 50: Create an Ultra-Realistic Simulation of the Universe
ha ha... don't worry it's coming 😄
X2
JJAJAJAJAJAJAJ
we're already it by going on youtube in our fake world... think about that!
actual size. :)
“Oh hey, Luke is showing us the area his model is based off. Cool!”
“Wait... That is the model!?!?!?”
Lol
As a person suffering from anxiety these super-relaxing modelling videos are pure gold.
Hi, read your comment. You like aquariums? This is just a 13min test with no music, but I'm soon going to shoot at least half an hour, maybe an hour long. Going to be of the whole tank and the quality is gonna be even better. Hopes this is soothing enough. Let me know if you like it, I'll keep you posted when I upload the next video. 😊😊🐠🐟🐠🐠🐟 ua-cam.com/video/PdkUvyeO6sw/v-deo.html
yesss these are like visual asmr, really soothing, industrious busywork with a beautiful result 😍
Schnagelkott I second you. Same with my depression it helped
Except for OCD. Thats a nightmare
Mauricio Huamán I learned about OCD early on enough in life, so I was able to recognize it and stop it, thankfully. I seriously used to attribute human emotions and ethics to inanimate objects, and be sad to damage like... a pencil or at its worst, to delete a letter when typing on a keyboard. Like I killed the letter... F#%K. Mental health is important.
"Then I set the tree on fire."
ha ha yeah... a bit unexpected 😄
Ahahaha same! I was like "You do what?!".
lol
I was like "oh yea, of course you do"
It was my favorite part of the video. Top quote 2019
My husband found your channel and has been listening to you for the last two weeks every night. Your voice is so soothing lol. And you have inspired him to spend all of our money at the model shop. ❤️
I thought of taking an attorney because he makes me depending on it!!! I do not know if these wonderful guys like him ruin or save my life :-))))
Up until the Toyota went around the corner, I was happily seeing it as a real scene. Awesome work!
lol yeah it's hard to get the car to slow down naturally and actually see the front wheel turn as the car takes the corner 😉 It's a pretty tight corner as well which doesn't help visually. Glad you liked it Brad 😀
@@BoulderCreekRailroad steering front wheels is one thing, but I think just adding a driver to the car would help a bit too! ;-) Astonishing modelling in any case!
The modelling god has descended once more to bring us this joyful video. Thank you Luke!
Yes, he really is a modelling God!!!
Luke, I just stumbled on this video by accident, but I was absolutely FASCINATED with the detail and skills you leveraged in this instructional video. I don't model and I don't craft but now I really WANT to! Thanks for this view into your modeling world, I was blown away. Wow. Mod podge water ripples. I would never have thought of that.
45:23 HOLLY MOLLY! At first glance, I thought it was taken at a REAL location! Man it looks so realistic!

TET2005 DAMN I WAS PRANKED
"After removing the majority of the foam I set the tree on fire."
Such an aussie thing to say xD
lol... 😄
First of all; UA-cam has everyone afraid of producing a video longer than 20 minutes. If what you are doing with the video is interesting, most folks, young and old, will watch intently for a lot longer than that. Your videos are so well edited and narrated I would watch an hour and still be amazed at your craftsmanship and care for details. You, sir, are indeed a master modeler. I've seen dioramas in the Smithsonian that were not as believable as your work. P.S. Great photo magic as well.
Never even considered building something like this, but i watched every minute! Some parts twice when i showed a friend!
This man is a modelling god. I have never seen such hyper - realism before. I thought it was real. Most awesome.
at the start of the video it look real asf
Re: Spray painting (even with an airbrush): There was, back in the day, a pretty well known professional model painter, whose name I can't remember at the moment--his talents were often shown off in "Mainline Modeler" magazine, a US model railroad specific magazine. In those days many modelers used lacquer based paints, brand name Floquil (the brand name is still around), and unfortunately this very talented modeler ended up killing himself, because he failed to use adequate respiration protection or a paint booth as part of his regimen. He died not of cancer, which many chemical compounds still make use of and can cause in the long-term...but literally of toxicity due to overexposure to chemically dangerous paint fumes and particulates. Not that even lower amounts of exposure will do you very much good either....
I bring this up because you, Luke, very often seem to spray paint, and particularly paints like Rustoleum, around somewhat haphazardly/casually, and without obvious, adequate respiration (at least where the videos are concerned). Maybe your regulars have already heard your recommendations where sprays are concerned, but as a new subscriber, those aren't all that obvious, even if they are already out there.
Paint splattering? Cool. Dry brushing? obviously cool. Dusts, chalks and other dirts? Cool--you are as exposed to those as much as if you step outside and take deep breath (life is dangerous...lol!).
But spraying paint inside a confined space is a bit riskier, particularly if you make modeling a life long hobby. Just sayin'.
Otherwise, I LOVE your work. You get after it and get it done, which is a talent (and it IS a talent too) I can only envy.
Props...!!...and thanks. Your channel rocks!
Truly incredible. I’m convinced this guy has created an ant man suit and in his free time he makes tiny towns to play in. Absolute legend
I always can’t wait for these videos! Your amazing!!!!
wow... I was literally copying and pasting my own comment (that was pre written no less) right as the video was being uploaded and you still beat me! I literally have no chance of ever being the first comment when competing with athletes like yourself 👏 well done!
Luke Towan thanks! I wasn’t even trying to be first! Lol. As soon as I saw the notification I clicked it because I love these videos!
I'm not even in to this type of thing , but I watched the whole damn video and enjoyed it lol . Subbed
As did I!
Same...bhahahahha
OptimusHighMegaBong I think most people here did, just really interesting, like watching a documentary. You know you aren’t going to go out and search for Atlantis but you still enjoy watching lol.
Same!
..me too
You probably feels like a god after creating that!
This one is seriously impressive, even above your other builds. I love the corner store too, very intricate and rustic-looking. You always manage to get the rusty Australian town feel in your builds and your videos are really insightful to watch!
I guess all the dislikes came from people who believed they were master modellers..until they saw this. Awesome build 👏👏
Dude, you are like the master of every technique/material/everything
Get off the road Luke, you'll get run over. Love the vids mate. Keep them coming.
lol... thanks Tim, I was lucky that bike rider didn't run me over!
@@BoulderCreekRailroad That is super cool how that work. I thought it was CG when I first saw it at the start of the vid. The bike rider kind of reminds me of Kermit the frog riding the bike in the Muppet Movie.
Luke, you knocked this out of the park. When I started the vid, I thought I was looking at a reference video instead of the completed diorama - well done!
That child that you bought from Woodland Scenics looks SO REAL man. 19:01.
Lol
Your videos are always worth the wait, but this one was exceptional!
thank you so much for the compliment 😃
Wouldnt you just love to live here!? You're work is absolutely fantastic!!
I have come to expect that your videos start with a shot outside so you have natural light and a real backdrop, making it look hyper realistic. This time, I was marvelling at how you managed to line up the shot so the building blended in with a real passing car on the road behind the model. Then I realised that the car driving by was part of the diorama.
Awesome shot. I honestly thought the car was real for a moment.
These are so soothing and satisfying to watch. Thank you so much for sharing these - Sincerely, a Very Stressed Student
Having the patience to do this is one thing...
But to have the skill to make it this realistic is just incredible!
I recently just made my first diorama and your tips helped me tremendously. Thank you Luke!
no worries Evan, glad I was able to help you through the videos. Keep up the hard work 😉
I've found these videos helpful for digital work, especially during my texturing process. Thanks for the insight into your projects.
Who else Sat through 46 minutes of this and somehow enjoyed it?
My God....buddy, you transcended a mini-model maker long ago. This is freakin art. You're an artist.
I honestly love how at the beginning it looks so real, but then blow everyone's mind that it ain't! like i legit thought it was real at first
The more I watch these, the more I want to make display dioramas for all my old HO locomotives.
Excellent diorama once again, Luke!
the sky is what makes it. Most realistic one that I've seen so far.
Finally I thought I would go insane without a New video
lol yeah it has been ages since the last video!
Yeah well I also build dioramas and what do you know I already ordered a new walthers kit just before you posted this video.
Your use of floating labels is inspired in the video. Great for people following in your footsteps!
I absolutely love your work Luke. Thank you for doing these dioramas. It's also awesome to see so much of our native bushland and icons being used!
I love your videos, please keep the full tutorials coming! I enjoy watching these so much! Keep up the good work!
Staggering diorama, simply beautiful workmanship
I just spent 46 minutes of my life watching this.
This is FASCINATING.
*Beginning of the video.*
Me: Oh! he is gonna recreate this real town.
*End of the video*
Me: FML!! TAKE MY MONEY!
Your channel is yet another definition of ‘attention to detail’
Amazing as always. Could you make a fantasy or medieval scenery?
I would totally love that!
Hey Ismael - this artist could make ANYTHING his amazing mind could think of. His only limitation is one that most of us have to deal with - he has to work for a living!!! But mate, there's NO reason you can't do the same as him. Just get out and try it. But then, we want to see your videos, too, OK? Chance 'em, brah!
We watch this all together as a family now, even the wife joins. Your stuff continues to blow us away, keep it up.
Really loved the bikers. Just need more animated figures and this would feel like an actual little living town. Maybe a couple of old men playing cards, a shopkeeper sweeping in front of the store, etc..
They're all driving on the wrong side of the road, mate!
Just kidding, awesome video!
lol... we are also upside down. I had to flip the video after filming it so it would appear the right way up for those watching in the northern hemisphere... 😄
Ant Man could live there after defeating Thanos
Hahahahaha
Hahahahaha
Hahahahaha
Hahahahaha
Hahahahaha
I happened across this video having no idea you're Aussie. About 2 seconds of seeing the bush and building I thought "jeez this looks a lot like Australia".
You nailed it. It reminds me of the mountains out Toowoomba way
Great job Luke, keep up the good work ❤️
I was thinking: "Why does he puts road signs facing the wrong way?". Then it got me. It's Australia!
ha ha you are definitely not the first to think that 😃 we are upside down in this part of the world
Oh come on, we all know driving on the left is the proper way and anyone driving on the right are nutters!
Drew Fox. It’s spelt “right”. LOL
The lighting makes it look real!
INCREDIBLE!!!
keep it going! You found what you were made for
the outside of this building is a masterpiece.. oh wait, theres also printed illusions of 3d things inside.. oh wait, theres also actual 3d things inside.. oh wait, theres also real lights inside.. of wait, thats just one building.. oh wait theres also a whole entire scene..
how the Fluck can there be so many masterpiece level things all wraped up into one little scenery piece??? My mind is blown at the level of craftsmanship and skill and awesomeness in these things.. Now its 2am and i have to work in the morning.. damnit.. well ill prepare for being exhausted tomorrow because theres no way im missing this... or the next 4 that im sure ill be watching. lol.
I don't understand... I happened upon this channel and I confess, I had a giggle at the thought of this as a suggestion. I am now addicted!
Yes!!!!! FINALLY I've been waiting so long for another one of these absolutely amazing videos
This was randomly suggested to me by YT and I am genuinely impressed at the level of skill you have. Well done.
Unbeliavable how real these looks on shots! Oh bugger...
It’s also important to note that some epoxys heat up when they are curing (via chemical reaction) and can melt plastic and/or foam.
Super like from Mexico. I love your videos. Thanks a lot!!!
Nina so cool that a girl might be interested in this, luv you babe from down under oz
How the working pedalling cyclists are made to work starts at 14:30 using the Magnorail system.
Great stuff.
0:11 подумал, что ты реально каким-то образом поставил велосипедиста, а сзади диорама
: D . Просто первый раз вижу в видео подобный велосипед. Очень реалистичный)
This was so cool to watch! I love miniature things, and seeing how these tiny cars can move throughout the town, so cool!

How did you get the sky and mountains in the background?
This whole thing was very enjoyable to watch. I didn't even realize it was forty plus, minutes.
They are real mountains and sky he took the video outside lol
I’m in heaven this Sunday evening watching your videos! I was always fascinated by anything miniature. I found your channel through Micromark tools. I like building dollhouses. After watching your videos, I feel inspired to try something new.
I would break things in five minutes HOW THE HELL DO YOU DO THIS LUKE
I just discovered you this morning,I CAN NOT STOP WATCHING
tbh i thought you just took a video of some random rural town and used that as the intro
My kids dig toy trains and cars. This building, and a town like it, would be awesome for a train table. 💡 thanks pal!
I watched him make the whole thing but I still find it hard to believe that shot in the beginning wasn't a real place.
Imagine having a hammer live live in it haha
Yea it's crazy
it feels, and looks so warm. i would live there. i wish it was a real place. it seems peaceful, and quite.
I'm so impressed. Incredible results.
