Regarding "runts" two things: first off, you can always bottle feed them if they're not nursing properly. Secondly, my mother only had had two sons. My big brother is a decade older than me. Despite that difference, I am the GODZILLA of the family!
We have nine newborn German Shepherd puppies that are now four days old. Some gained a few ounces above the 15 ounce average birth weight and then rebounded back down to birth weight. Some stayed at the same weight as birth weight over those 4 days. They are eating about every 2 hours. They are strong and vigorous. They only cry when hungry and can easily crawl over to feed themselves. In between feeding if they don't cry, they sleep and don't act hungry. We have a light bulb that keeps a small area at 85 degrees thats available when they aren't next to mom. We've checked rectal temps on a couple and the were 97-99 degrees. We have started a small amount of formula, about a tablespoon at a time in between feedings. The small amount is to prevent aspiration. The vet recommended a tiny bit of Karo syrup rubbed onto the tongue occasionally to keep blood sugar ok. We didn't get much information from the vet so far to tell us when we should be worried. How many days can they remain near their birth weight and still be ok? We want them to gain an ounce or two a day but we aren't sure what we need to do differently? I know it's possible they could have worms or something? Mom seems to be making milk. The puppies seem satisfied. We give the mom canned puppy food mixed with a regular dry dog food, a hard-boiled egg every day and some peanut butter for fat. We aren't sure what would require taking them to the vet? We have good vets and they didn't ask to see them yet. I know it's possible that the first few days they might not gain much? But I want to stay on top of everything. Most information I read is that they should gain 1-2 ounces a day after the first 24 hours.
It is very odd that they aren’t gaining weight. It’s normal for them to drop weight the first 48 hours but after that they should be picking up and gaining regularly. You may have to bottle feed if things don’t change soon.
@@HouseofWrinkles Ok. Thanks! We started some bottle-feeding. Of course there's the risk of aspiration and a couple of them coughed a little. We suction right away if that happens. The last weigh in, they gained a little. Hard to be accurate short term because maybe it's just a full belly or something that caused the gain! I guess we'll know in the next few days. Runts are extremely hard to keep alive. You really have to have someone monitoring them 24/7 for the first 4 weeks. 1) make sure they are eating 2) weight them every single day ( make sure they are growing 3) make sure they are pooping Good luck with your little runt. We wish you the best ❤️

There is syringe feeding where you squirt a little in the side of the mouth at a time. Or tube feeding. You can research videos on those. Unfortunately we don’t have video on them. I wish we did
We we have heard of as many as 11 or 12 but that is super rare. Usually 3-6 is average. We just had a litter of 7 but I think that’s extremely lucky. Our past litters have been less.

Yes goats milk and egg yolk are fine. It’s very normal for mom not to want to eat or the first couple days. Have you tried giving her chicken broth or boiled chicken? Also u can give mom goats milk to help her produce more milk.

I don’t have much advise on seizures. Unfortunately there are several things that cause seizures. Some are more serious than others. Low or high blood sugar can cause seizures in small puppies and that’s an easy fix. The problem is sometimes it’s hard to tell why the seizures are happening. My only advice is to not make any sudden changes in food. Watch the puppy closely to try and determine what triggers the seizure. If separation from mom is really the cause try taking the puppy away from mom for short periods of time at first. Then gradually keep the puppy away from mom longer and longer. Ok. You may have to force mom to lay down the first couple days until she figures it out. For bottle feeding make sure you stop them from eating after drinking a little to burp them. Then continue feeding… stop and burp after every half ounce or so

Hi!! Usually the one time will perk them up enough to eat within a few seconds or a minute. You can give it again in about 4 hours. But I wouldn’t do it more than 3 times in one day. Sorry, it was a very busy day/night. I don’t have a proper scale for the pups, all I have is a old fashioned dietary scale that only has oz and grams and stops at 500 grams. The rest of the little have maxed out my scale and the runt is at 14/15oz. But I fed him two small syringes every two hours last night and he’s actually doing a lot better. He’s finally showing interest in nursing with the rest of the litter. But he doesn’t latch on as long as the rest… let me go to your Facebook for that feeding chart. Are you talking about the Karo? Only give this when a puppy is not strong enough to eat. This is a super sugar and can run a normal puppies blood sugar up too high. This is only for a puppy that is not thriving

We have several videos that could help. Have you seen our newborn care 101? This is 3 videos all about how to care for newborn pup. Also I suggest just a regular baby bottle from your local store. We also have a video on how to care for a runt. Is he eating well? Do he cry and move around strong?

Sounds like you will have to bottle feed him in order for him to make it. Karo is just if they are weak and lethargic acting.

Can I do this to all my pups to just make sure they stay healthy? Or do you only recommend if you think it’s needed?
Are you talking about the Karo? Only give this when a puppy is not strong enough to eat. This is a super sugar and can run a normal puppies blood sugar up too high. This is only for a puppy that is not thriving

I don’t suggest giving Karo more than 2 times in one day several hours apart. Are you bottle feeding?
@@HouseofWrinkles I just purchased some bottles they come tomorrow so I was using the kids syringe then I seen they could potentially drown if I’m not doing it right so yes I will be bottle feeding he is only a couple hours old and really small any advice for me
We have several videos that could help. Have you seen our newborn care 101? This is 3 videos all about how to care for newborn pup. Also I suggest just a regular baby bottle from your local store. We also have a video on how to care for a runt.
Is he eating well? Do he cry and move around strong?
Unfortunately the run past away this morning a hour after feeding I guess he wasn’t eating because they where warm with the heating pad

The puppies will have diarrhea if mom is taking antibiotics.

I don’t breed but I only own full breeds. I’ve had Dobermans, Boxers, Huskies, Chihuahuas, and Yorkies. I got them all from breeders. My Dobbie arrived on a plane. So yes you do you for customers like me.❤
