My WPG was the runt of the litter. But as I watched him the first few weeks, I noticed he pushed back at his siblings. He grew to an adult weight of 63 lbs. and had great prey drive. We hunted for 12 seasons all across the U.S. I lost him last October at 13 years old. RIP Magoo.
My best dog ever was the runt of her litter. She lived for 15 years and was healthy until her last few days. We still talk about her. Our current pup hears about “St. Sally” from time to time. He will be a great dog too. It takes time. :)
I did a fantastic rattlesnake aversion training with my 2yr old GSP through Natural Solutions in San Diego. They had 4 stations, live baby snake, molted skin, rattler sound, live adult snake. It was incredible to watch her get it so quickly. 3 months later we were in a gift shop in Sedona and I picked up a keychain made from a rattle and she IMMEDIATLEY jumped back about 4 feet and tried to yank me away from it. The goodest girl! Can’t recommend them enough. We will do annual updates and consider it necessary since we live in the southwest and do quite a few hikes in rattler country.
Just bought a "RUNT" so to speak and glad to hear this. His brothers are different sizes too, 1 massive, 1 mid-size and then mine on the smaller size. Plan on helping him and supplementing his food.
YAWA Question: How often should I use the easy lead to train versus just a regular walk, or should it be easy lead at all times until they learn how to heel?
Yes! ManSiri (who is very likely drunk, that's what we do!) ... car park = parking lot! Bonus fun Aussie fact: tailgating in Australia means someone driving way too close to you (aggressive driving). Not, having a party out the back of your car outside a football game :o)
YAWA QUESTION: My dog recently gave birth to 11 puppies however I've noticed the runt hasn't really grown at all, initially I thought hee siblings were using their weight to push her away and so I started taking my dog away for maybe 20 minutes and letting her eat after her siblings but my dog is refusing to let her eat. My dog will stand up as soon as the puppy latches and won't sit back down, i thought my dog was just restless being away from the rest of the litter so I started doing in the same room and it stopped for a few days but is happening again. Is this normal? Should I start bottle feeding? And what are some tips?
I got the runt of the litter. When he was a baby he needed extra help from the breeder because he was getting pushed out the way to the teet. He ended up being the biggest of the litter as an adult.
Thanks for the answer! I’m getting my first personal GSP puppy this November (puppies all just born) and have come across a TON of varying information on the topic. Awesome to get y’all’s take on it from a hunting dog breeder point of view. Best wishes from Tuscaloosa! Roll Tide
YAWA QUESTION: I'm at a complete loss with my puppies potty training we have a 9 week old german wirehaired pointer and we take him out every 3-4 hours to potty religiously. He will go out and pee once or twice and we bring him back inside to play and he pees 2-3 more times inside after being outside for 15 to 20 minutes completely eliminating his bladder we just don't know what to do anymore? Any suggestions would be a great help!
YAWA question: I have an 9 week old male GSP puppy who I love to keep finding excuses to spend more time with. Your video's have been an inspiration in helping us make the correct associations during very limited training sessions. My wife suggested that I think about eventually enrolling him in a gun dog school so I can take him bird hunting with me. How long can I delay this type of training before it's determinantal to him effectively learning these skills? I myself am new to upland hunting and am still acclimating to the use of a shotgun over a rifle. Keep up the amazing work.
My daughter owns the "Runt" of a litter. He had a testicle that didn't drop and needed surgery. When that was done the vet explained to us that a true runt has some sort of medical problem from miner to severe. If not it is just the smallest puppy. I'm sure your vet friend can say much better then I if that true or not.
Yawa Question: Hi. Thanks for being so informative in your videos, theyre very help as I am a new pup mom. I currently have 2 nine week old pitbull puppies that my boyfriend and I have had since they were 5.5 weeks old. One of my babies is the runt of the litter and displays the behaviors you associated with a pup that may have had to work harder. We have also noticed he is a little more stubborn and rebellious than his brother. We plan on getting them professionally trained but should we be concerned about the behavioral traits or will he grow out of them?
Any behavior you are seeing now is being conditioned and we would recommend working with a trainer sooner rather than later to resolve those behavioral issues before they become too much more ingrained!
Question. I have a 9 month old female GSP family dog. No hunting. We are thinking about a second. Can it be another female. Can it be from same parents of next liter?
Just found the channel... already seen 20-30 of your videos now. Love them, love you guys,.. great channel, instant subscriber. I bought a GWP pup and I pick him up in 5 weeks but the trainer I planned on using wont have room for Hank for another 5-6 weeks. I have never owned a bird dog, and trying to soak up as much as I can to get this puppy ready for school! Do you recommend the Eukanuba puppy food to get him started?
Thanks for subscribing!! We actually have an online training community at patron.com/standingstonekennels setup to help people just like you! We do feed all of our puppies Eukanuba large breed puppy food. Let us know how we can help!
YAWA Question: How do you walk your young puppies. We are getting an 8 week old GSP in May and would like to take use your tip of walking before bed for more successful nights in the crate. We want to be sure we don't damage their trachea with pulling on a leash, but it sounds like they are not ready for an easy lead and learning how to heal until they are older and demonstrating boldness in the field. Do you suggest a harness, or what are your thoughts?
YAWA question: I had someone tell me that you never teach a hunting GSP to "sit" because they will sit when they point. I have never heard of this. My GSP'S have all learned sit, down and other commands...thought you guys could give some insight to this. I enjoy your videos! Becky & GSP Jude
Mine stands when she points and I’ve trained her to sit since a puppy. I think she is to focused/excited with the bird to want to sit lol. Not a professional just my experience on it.
my "small" puppy didn't need extra help per se, I did help the whole litter, as there are 12 lol, and I did try get him on the teat more, but basically he put on similar weight gains to his litter mates but will always be smaller. He also wasn't necessarily lagging behind either. with bottle feeding I would bottle feed the puppies who didn't put on as much weight as the others the previous day/week first, which in all honestly wasn't even him 50% of the time. he's tiny but mighty lol he doesn't know he's the littlest
YAWA Question: i have a 7 months old gordon setter, and as soon as i finished his recall training (he was around 6months old) i started hunting quails with him. The second quial hunt he started making some sloppy points, but the third one, his points were so strong that i could flush the quail by myself and he would stand still until quail comes out. Ever since, he is making great points. So, about retrieves, i let him retrieve ever bird i hit, even if i find her first i let him find her too and bring her back to me. And he is doing a great job. But when he comes with the quail he doesnt want to let her go, so i have to use some muscles to open his mouth. Do u have any tips on making him let that bird easier?
Yawa question: will these methods work with other bird/gun dog breeds? For example, a standard poodle? We're getting a standard poodle puppy & we want her to retrieve, but all the training books talk only about labs.
"they can be the fighter." My runt french brittany thought that was funny. He's sharing our pillows on his back like it's a damned salon and he raised an eyebrow at that. I mean it could true in a roundabout way, He definitely learned to use sweetness more than assertion. he has a really different temperament balance than any dog I've ever seen and he's both very deferential and very persistent. And he never misses anything, he's not a fighter but he remembers every single little opportunity, way more than other dogs I've known. If you can't find a crumb you dropped he'll see you looking around then immediately go for it when you leave the room, even if its hours later and he's been asleep. We give him tiny ice chips and if one gets lost under the fridge he'll keep checking on it for days unless you get it out.
Love you guys! Got a YAWA question. Hunting season is on us and I have been training my GWP on quartering , shot some pigeons over her and I plan on buying some flight conditioned quail. How many and how often to shoot over her. Actually she will turn one year old on Kansas opening pheasant season. Is it better to use the launcher or should I just plant them? Thanks. Fellow Kansan.
*YAWA Question:* Does it matter if someone has a young intact male dog, and gets a second dog that's a male pup 8 weeks. What kind of dynamics will occur between them? Can they get along super well, or should one expect some kind of ongoing rivalry to be the case? Can having the same sex dogs in the same home be a negative for each dog's training and confidence? Or, can that competitiveness actually be a good thing? Should you just follow the usual rule of getting a female as the next dog that arrives, if you've already got a male? Or does none of this matter? If you think getting a female is a better idea, do you all often spay some females to not have to deal with heat cycles, or is that a tough decision to make? I mean, you wouldn't want to spay a potentially good performer that you want to breed. At the same time, not everyone out there is set up to breed their female, as you know, managing a pregnancy + puppies is a huge time commitment. **only consider sociable breeds in this case like field bred Labs and GSP's for this question
#YawaQuestion Is it possible to and what are y’all’s thoughts on training the same dog to be a waterfowl dog as well as an upland dog. It’s my first gun dog that’s not a lab (which is now retired and was mainly used as waterfowl and the occasional dove retrieve)
If you're driving through a desert in a boat and you get a flat tire. How many fish does it take to shingle a roof? None because ice cream doesn't have any bones.....Wait I wasn't supposed to answer my own question was i? And yes they are called car parks everywhere that slowly left the British Empire. We left under different terms. So we named stuff how we wanted to lol

In the UK it is a car park - or as my little sister used to refer to it a "Par Cark"

I watched that porcupine video because I had the pup run into one too, thankfully not as bad as Muddy, but it definitely helped!
Sooo glad it help! Hope you don’t have to do that again anytime soon!
Dude! I updated my Siri to an Aussie female and it’s wild lol
Hahaha yes!!!

Can you train a bird dog thats 2 years old?
I like the smaller dogs. They are easier to handle and lift.

Car park is what we say in England as well
That’s awesome!
