In the book he actually dies in a much scarier way. Artyom and he are traveling through a dark tunnel when Burbon suddenly turns to Artyom with pupils that are very unnaturally small. “I have died, there is no more me” He says, then faceplants on the railway track, then that sound from earlier comes for artyom. I really wish the games Hammered up the horror element.
I think a death like that in the game would of been very abrupt, and wouldn't of matched the pacing for the 1st game at all. But still pretty horrifying none the less.
@@Ratonu29 Bourbon survived. This is discussed by two bandits in the Metro LL DLC. Bourbon on the train is only Artyom's dying delirium, since Artyom does not know that Bourbon survived, and believes that he is dead.

I’m pretty sure that Metro Exodus’ ending is non-canon, as the good ending makes more sense from a narrative perspective and (more so than the bad endings of previous Metro games) chastises you for the bad choices you made throughout the game. If I’m right and the good ending is canon, then it could mean there’s a chance Bourbon is still alive.
