    I always felt that, on the one hand, the ETS guys did have some right to be concerned that a historically-underperforming school is suddenly producing calculus whiz kids; on the other hand, they reacted to their suspicions completely wrong. The way to assuage their suspicions would be to visit the school one day and watch Mr Escalante (or as I call him, "Stan Dandyliver") teach a class, maybe pick a couple kids at random and ask them to solve a moderately difficult problem. It would be something like the police checking out an alibi: it would establish that the good scores were plausible, and in the absence of any evidence of cheating, that's the end of that.

    • @silverpslm

      Exactly. Dont have them retake the entire quiz. Just have them answer one of the question they had right and show them how they answered it.

      This is part of the problem tho. The fact that you would question the test scores reveals that you think anyone from the community isnt capable of performing well. Thats an implicit bias.

    • @kingbeauregard
      @kingbeauregard 3 роки тому +26

      @@sagvjc2525 "Implicit bias" my ass. The issue is that the school's scores have always been terrible, until all of a sudden they clock in as the best calc students anyone's ever seen. That would merit investigation no matter the community in question. The bias can be found in the investigators' refusal to accept the obvious explanation once it's right there for them to see: there is a new calc teacher and he's gotten through to his students.

      @@sagvjc2525 No, I understand it just fine. Checking to see what accounts for the dramatic increase in scores is reasonable. Refusing to believe Mr Escalante or be satisfied with a demonstration that his kids do actually understand calculus, is not.
      The implicit bias is in the EFT guys' refusal to accept the possibility that those barrio kids could learn math, even after the evidence was right in front of their faces. A reasonable EFT person would have maybe seen Lou Diamond Phillips do an integration by parts, and that would settle that; not even a rigorous retesting.

      It’s so much more complicated than people think it is… Office politics were huge. There were a team of teachers on Escalante’s side, which made advocating so much easier in this situation, and the bigger school system filled with jealously at the same time that eventually pushed them all out. It was also a very different time with very different students. The film showed how much those kids had to grow up to take care of their siblings and grandparents, or to work to help their family. It definitely still happens, but not as much as it did 40 years ago.

    “There are two kinds of racism Mr. Escalante. Singling out a group because they’re members of a minority and not singling out a group because they’re members of a minority.”
    He’s not wrong. If you do anything (or fail to do something) against anyone due to the color of their skin, the fact that you are focusing on the color of their skin is what makes you guilty of choosing based on color/race identity. Saying I’m choosing you since you’re hispanic is every bit as racist as saying I’m not choosing you since you’re hispanic. I agree with Mr. Esclante’s demand and anger, I grew up in a country where it’s innocent until proven guilty, not the other way around. Indeed, if these kids were investigated due to their surnames, THAT IS prejudicial. I hope the guy was telling the truth when he said that their identities were concealed, since if not, then yeah, you can make the case that they’re only being investigated due to their ethnicity. With that in mind, I hope they’re also investigating any “irregularities” from schools of richer neighborhoods. Like the guy said, refusal to do so due to the color of their skin is also racism.
    Also, for anyone who misunderstands me and is about to call me a “white-privileged so-and-such”, my skin is brown, and I’m proud of that.

I ended up attending a top college as a first Gen and having an amazing time and graduating with honors with a biochem degree…but I could have done it ALOT better in my opinion. Low key, I may just send my kids to an underperforming school to get that experience if it wasn’t for the fact that now he won’t be a first gen and the tax returns wont help him much due to my income being 5x higher than my dad’s ever was. Gracias papá.

      Oh boy, might not be so simple. I had the choice between two high schools and chose the "more diverse" of the two. I still got into a really good college (and ended up being classmates with some of the people I knew from the richer school), but I also got in a lot more trouble outside of school because of the people I was hanging out with, had to dodge a couple of gang fights at the school I did attend, and none of the friendships I made at that school have stood the test of time.
      Something I've come to realize later is that a contributing factor to generational poverty is the setting of insufficiently lofty goals because of a lack of exposure to higher aspirational career paths. Call it naive, but I didn't realize that I set my bar too low until I was 5-6 years into my career. What's crazy, is that if I'd listened to some members of my family, the bar would've been set even lower as they'd tried talking me into going to a lesser school because it would've been easier even though I ended up graduating with high honors from the #2 school worldwide in my field. Where I was naive was in choosing my initial career path after graduation. A benefit of going to richer schools is exposure to high income individuals and a better understanding of the career paths to get you there. Had I gone to the richer school, I doubt I would've made the early career mistakes that I did.

    First of all, exams are not just an exercise of knowledge. Exams are more importantly an exercise of honesty and integrity. You answer every question as honestly as possible in the same way you would try to honestly fill in needed information in your tax declarations.
    In the movie, we did see how students "Cooperated" and helped each other learning calculus. We also see in this scene that more intellectual capability, its the integrity of the student, the teacher, the school, the community is being unfairly questioned. So naturally, the teacher has to make this stand, because there was no proof of cheating or wrong-doing.

      I'm guessing it's the testimony of the person who supervised while they took the test, but if that person is their teacher I'm guessing there's a reason to have suspicion of that testiment. And I just said "I'm guessing" twice in one sentence.

      The kids were forced to retake the test, or rather a harder version of the test, with lots of people observing them. The kids still aced that test, so presumably they aced the first one fair and square too.

    • @SweetJeopardy
      @SweetJeopardy 2 роки тому +2

      The burden of proof falls on those making the accusations (innocent until proven guilty, right?). It's a logical fallacy to ask to disprove that something didn't happen.
      These guys had suspicions about the legitimacy of the test scores because they were better than average results from "hood" schools. Escalate was right: there was classism and a race component in their suspicions.
      I'm glad that, even though it wasn't fair because the accusations were unfounded, the students were able to smash any doubts of their credibility by retaking (and getting even better grades) that test.

Felicity Huffman and all those who cheated to get their kids into colleges they didn't deserve to be in and got a slap on the wrist would like to have a word. That's the only race card that ever truly gets played and wins in this country. Go ask Casey Anthony and that other girl how to get away with killing their babies since ya'll swear to care so much about children. Or Brock Turner how to rape and get away with it. Or the rich kid in TX how to kill 4 innocent people and face not one moment of jail time. I could give you thousands of examples. You see the ultimate race card being played every day and winning so gtfoh with that bs.

There was one type of equation that all of kids got wrong and for the same reason so they assumed the kids must have cheated because they all scored high on the test. At that time people doubted that Jaime Escalante could create an ap program in a high school where many kids struggled just to pass the state min requirements so what he did was so remarkable people doubted it.
