Where I think we disagree, is mainly that I view that both parties are representing the same oligarchic, and really at this point, kleptocratic interests. The democrats are more styled towards big tech companies and the republicans are more styled towards Coal, Steel etc.. The class in America that controls both parties is really the corporate elite. Republican politicians somehow found a way to mimick the language of populism while turning around and screwing their voter base legislatively; The Democrats do the same and in addition are also insulting as hell. I wish we could all just come together and see that class interests are what's really at play here... they are trying to keep us divided over cultural issues that in the end do not effect the levers of power. Both parties a few months ago with the sanction of Trump (who is his own type of fraud), voted to further increase military spending and also to give trillions of taxpayer dollars to the stock market in which the Top 1% owns 50%, and the Top 10% owns 84% of it. It took me twenty-two years to get my AA, because I was afraid of math and that was all I had left to take. I watched Stand and Deliver during my pre-algebra class, and I swear to God, it motivated me---and that wasn't even the real man himself, Mr. Jaime Escalante! I can only imagine what he must've been like as a teacher, and how much I would've benefitted, having someone as dedicated as him to kick my ass into gear. I got Edward James Olmos, though, and that helped. Rest in peace, Mr. Escalante!!
@@sarcasticallyrearranged it's never too late! The time will continue to pass by and life will always get in the way. Take advantage of tutoring centers and be consistent with tutoring, form study groups, and be sure to choose a professor with a good reputation. You can do it!
I wish I could have had him as a teacher. I've struggled with math but now I know what he meant by ganas. There is no way around math. Math is supposed to be hard. You have to have guts and work hard at it. sacrifice.
So have I. I was lucky enough to have a great math teacher for the first nine weeks of school in the tenth grade. He was a retired Army Colonel who, like Escalante cared about his kids. It was a first year Algebra course and I came out with a high 'C' for that grading period. I was so proud of that grade and had begun to actually look forward to coming to class instead of dreading it. That did not last long. On the first day back to class after the Thanksgiving Holidays, I and another boy were, and without any notice or explanation pulled out of class and transferred to another teacher. I was devastated. To put it bluntly, this woman could have cared less. When I went after school for help, I was ignored. I begged my Mother to intervene and at least talk to my guidance counselor about transferring me back to "Colonel's" class, she refused. "Well, if you don't care, then I don't care", I told her. I never passed Algebra.
It gets easier if you use it all the time. Here's a good example: When I am shopping, I am constantly juggling biochemistry, calorie-to-dollar ratios, protein-to-calorie ratios, etc. Now, of course, I have shortcuts. I know which areas of the store to put more attention toward. But the point is, I'm not just mentally lazily grabbing things that look good. Even with inflated prices, I still keep my bill under 200 a month, nearly all organic, or at least extremely low on pesticides, heavy metals and undesirable chemicals like "aluminum bicarbonate". Save money, be super healthy, lose brain cells at a much slower rate than the average American (okay, that's more biochemistry), groceries are just one little thing math benefits. It's everywhere, finances, home improvement, mechanics, electronics, programming... The entire universe is just a bunch of mathematical data. We might even be in a computer simulation for all we know.
We need more teachers like him today more than ever before! The man was assent while others did not believe in students he absolutely did. Respect!!!!!
I’m from the country where Mr Escalante came from Bolivia... and I can tell you that we acknowledge for the contributions he made to the rise of the Latin communities... we acknowledge him as an example of Bolivians in America who made a difference
There were 2 middle schools being built while I was in 7th grade because there were too many kids going to one middle school. One was named after Jaime Escalante in Pharr Texas. ❤️

Wow! I had no idea that Mr. Escalante died? My goodness. How is his widow and family doing I wonder as well as his student? So many successes and lives well-lived. This epic story makes me think often of my 4th grade teacher Mrs. Donna Brown of Princeton, KY. She's long dead, but she told me often, "David you are to smart not too succeed....stop being lazy in your studies and in your work in class!" Now, today, I am a medical coder and billing agent for doctor's offices in my home town of Paducah and Southern Illinois for the last ten years now. I officially can't believe that the Guilford high school from Eastside los Angeles California. Made it through the calculus test and realized quickly and pass it by step by step to get into this maximum. Well done.
Notice that Escalate, Marva Collins and Joe Clark were able to successfully teach these kids using the same philosophy that would get them called racist and uncle Tom today. They told the kids to work hard that they were capable and skin color doesn't matter only your attitude and hard.

He was right Ganas! I went through almost 10 years of school. I thought I was never going to transfer and finish. Now I am two weeks away from getting my master degree. I never realized that I had these ganas inside me. Disciplined and Desire! It really does make the difference.
If I had kids, I would have made them go and learn from this man if he were still here today. One needs to recognize the Master teachers of our day. There are so many shitty teachers who are given positions because of their marks, but they have no sense in teaching.

gotta tell ya math is in everything, including music. I took algebra in college. My algebra professor took our class to garbage dumps and recycle plants. We then had to do algebra based on what is garbage vs recyclables; x= garbage and y= recyclables. I ended up getting my BA in Classics. I still struggle with math, but I still remember the algebra I learned and some from Math 100.

Muy grandfather was in the same school with him in Bolivia. Escalante made a business there competing with the sandwiches of the priests. The principal told him to stop it.
One more reason why standardized testing should be done away with. And his legacy.....the two students who went on to great and successful careers.....brings tears doesn't it?
I went to UC Berkeley with a number of his ex-students. He made a big difference in people’s lives. A great man.
