The worst thing is that although this is a fictional movie, this is a reality for a lot of us. I've been through this, I remember a judge once telling me "I don't think it is in a child's best interest to spend even one night away from its mother", all I could do was cry.

In my belief, you are incorrect. Back then, he was depressed, always trying to bring a smile onto everyone's face, but his. And then, something truly beautiful and miraculous happened and he found himself. His "Golden Age", in my own sense, was not the time where he was giving us a good laugh, but the time where he found out that none of it matters, because without the ego of the persona, and the identification to thoughts, the stillness of life is much more beautiful.
I love the ending of the trial scene. At 4:57 it swiftly shifts from "What have I done?" to essentially shaking hands with the Devil at 5:26. It really sums up his development in this movie

I think I'm glad to be the exception to the folks here who didn't understand this scene as a kid. I was the child of a bitter custody battle. It's not something that is thrilling to go through. I'm in my 30's now and it's still relevant in my life.
The fact that everyone in the scene immediately assumes that her contesting custody means she gets the kids by default just shows how shitty Americas court system can be
Eh. It's a fiction built on tropes and assumptions. While it's true that most women end up with custody over their children, over half of all custody decisions are made before shit even goes to arbitration. Fact is, over half of divorced fathers don't want their kids enough to fight for them.
I gotta say, for my money this is THE Jim Carrey movie for the ideal balance of comedy and heart strings. Some of his best slapstick ever combined with a good deal of dramatic self reflection.
I love how at 0:06 the guy in the background comes in and he immediately covers his face when he sees the piece of paper stuck to Jim Carrey's head like he's trying not to laugh and you can kind of see him crack up before he covers his face
Boink bad baby bad baby *imitate slaps* did u ever make llllovvve?! U had sex everytime u with her didn't u?! Um.. LIAR! 🤣😂 Objection. He's badgering the witness. It's his witness. 😆
I really like how in this scene, the same mournful music from Max's birthday party is playing. It cleverly mirrors the two scenes where Fletcher neglected his son for his job and sex life, and now Mrs Cole has done the same thing by neglecting her marriage and children, and taking away their loving father for hedonistic reasons. As everyone keeps saying, Fletcher's face at 5:08 is Jim Carrey's great talent: his guilt of turning Mrs Cole into the same person he was, but also his realization of "No, this isn't who I am anymore".
The Mask Dumb and Dumber Ace Ventura: Pet Detective Ace Ventura: When Nature Calls Liar Liar The Trueman Show Me, Myself and Irene The Grinch Bruce Almighty A Series of Unfortunate Events Name ONE bad film in that. You can't. Jim Carrey is one of the best actors ever.
@Aluzky The fact that you've decided to be in a relationship with a dog just shows how insecure your fragile little ego is. Fri-king Hero! When he saw his client was evil he didnt think about the money or whatever, he thought about what he believed was right and even held himself in contempt. God bless this character.
I use to love this film as a kid. The court bits went over my head but when I watch it back now, it evokes real emotion. Brilliant film, excellent comedy.
@@rhuephus yeah, what's your point? Films and stories in general makes us feel a certain way and give an emotional response. So if a movie ends with children being slaughtered you won't be sad because "iT's a m0viE" smh
Let me help you with that... lets looks at how his character developed in this scene and apply it... He was so overcome with guilt over the parental rights that he placed himself in contempt of court, he is also still Ms.Cole's Attorney and she knows NOTHING of this incident, and he just won her MILLIONS on a technicality. Technically speaking he very well could sneakily sabotage her custody proceedings via telling the truth thus repenting for his previous misdeeds and completing his characters transformation. Father still loses millions but gets to keep his kids.
@@achilleuspetreas3828 The point would be it's silly to 'hope a fictional character gets something' especially after the stories conclusion. Kids being slaughtered in a movie would be sad, hoping their families can find consolation is idiotic.
And funny also that its apparently reported that was legit pain and causes of harm that Carrey put on himself in that scene So all those bruises and marks you see on him is most likely real physical damage
The way Jim Carey uncannily animates his body as part of his humor has always been so unique and hilarious. That victory walk back to his seat after explaining the win is just timeless, priceless, classic Jim Carey. Glad my childhood unfolded during the height of his acting career.
I saw this movie as a youngster and Jim Carey was so funny that his humor managed to override the raging puberty hormones shooting off fireworks in my body looking at Jennifer Tilly. THAT is a monumental accomplishment 🤣
4:38 God, that look of abject horror on his face as he just realized he ruined these kids' lives is incredible. Completely went over my head when I first watched this.
Jim's antics aside, this movie operates on an excellent premise: what if someone who's perhaps not totally evil but is certainly amoral, deeply selfish, and disinterested in the care and dignity of others, was forced to confront everything about who they are and what they do. I suppose it has a bit in common with A Christmas Carol, in that regard. The mounting realization he has throughout this movie of just how despicable he's been and how much misery he's sown is conveyed really well.

Women like this one insult the memory of women like Hannah Clarke
“I’m gonna hit him where it hurts,”
“You said he was a good father,”
“So?”
Honestly..that’s just sad. That’s the most tragic thing I’ve ever had to hear. Even when the kids were saying goodbye to their father. In a very humorous movie, that was heavy.
its the reality of most marriages sadly
The worst thing is that although this is a fictional movie, this is a reality for a lot of us. I've been through this, I remember a judge once telling me "I don't think it is in a child's best interest to spend even one night away from its mother", all I could do was cry.
Just finished watching this movie now and it's been a while since I have watched it, that scene is still powerful today... That quote that Jennifer Tilly's character says: "Let go of those they are mine, don't you have some checks to right?? You haven't paid for them yet..." ☹️☹️☹️
theusagirl thank you for writing what she said. It’s so so sad and made me emotional.
@@DarrenOderinde My daughter goes through this. My ex wife who cheated on me and lied in courts still got her way. I only see my child two weekends a month and she begs not to go back home to her mother. She has come back to me with hand print bruises and lice infested. I have a lawyer working on the case to get me more time with her. But every time I have to give her up and watch her cry and beg not to leave me as her mother drags her away. It hurts man.
I love Jim Carrey and I've seen Liar Liar at least 375 times and I'm still going to watch it again
Jim Carrey's golden age:
1994-2004
i wonder... where's he right now though
@@VixXstazosJOB he's back in Sonic movie
Um, Once Bitten??
In my belief, you are incorrect. Back then, he was depressed, always trying to bring a smile onto everyone's face, but his. And then, something truly beautiful and miraculous happened and he found himself.
His "Golden Age", in my own sense, was not the time where he was giving us a good laugh, but the time where he found out that none of it matters, because without the ego of the persona, and the identification to thoughts, the stillness of life is much more beautiful.
He was on coke that's why
I love the ending of the trial scene. At 4:57 it swiftly shifts from "What have I done?" to essentially shaking hands with the Devil at 5:26. It really sums up his development in this movie
This scene really opens your eyes when you watch it as an adult compared to a child, Mr Cole literally just lost have of his wealth to a woman who was sleeping with anyone who would have her, and could possibly lose custody of his kids.
"You said he was a good father"
"So"
The way Tilly delivers that response cuts like a knife....damn.
She's so hot in this movie, she can take my kids any day.

Well done
Yes, but no... At the end, he won the case but realized it was unfair...

Any movie that can have an emotional effect on you as a kid, and then 20 years later have a completely different emotional effect, as if you just watched it for the first time, is legendary as far as I’m concerned.
This scene is incredible. Jim Carrey’s acting is great. Heartbreaking really.

"They say " comedy is harder to do than drama. Jim Carrey is my Oscar winner in this emmensely funny & very moving film. Like Planes, Trains & Automobiles it's got real laughs and real dramatic moments that play it straightforward. Liar, Liar is one helleva great movie.
I HOLD MYSELF IN CONTEMPT!!!!
his acting is soo good and you can de on his face when he pulls his hand away from the hand shake . Such a good performance
4:00 “Hey, I’m the victim here!”
And the father who’s being robbed of his kids and half his fortune isn’t? I hate the “victim mentality” that is so common nowadays!
If you read between the lines, everything he says to manipulate her is really about his own marriage. He says her husband is a "workaholic" who doesn't deserve her, just like he didn't deserve his ex - but makes excuses for her "one single act of indiscretion" because that's what HE did to ruin his own marriage. It's not a coincidence that his legal case breaks down at the same time his self-deception about being a good dad is breaking down.
@@CountArtha Good point. In a way, him and the woman’s ex are two sides of the same coin. They are both “Workaholics”, but one is actually a good father.
this was almost 30 years ago.....
The scene where he hugs the kids just broke my heart
Robin williams and jim carrey , two incredible guys who could make me laugh like this and see the truth and darkness in something afterwards ❤️👏🏻
Comedy is just men expressing themselves
when he started pleading with the judge and talked of children not being leverage,i broke down and cried, his performance was extraordinary, reminded me of my divorce and my child was the pawn, the system is broken, beyond belief
I think I'm glad to be the exception to the folks here who didn't understand this scene as a kid. I was the child of a bitter custody battle. It's not something that is thrilling to go through. I'm in my 30's now and it's still relevant in my life.
"Jordan Fades Man "Swoosh" And That's The Game!"

Ever since I was 7 years old, that judge has always been such a memorable supporting character. Classy, in control, and doesn't suffer fools.
He passed after the film was made
That look on his face when he was told to sit down 😂
“I hold myself in contempt!”- great line
The fact that everyone in the scene immediately assumes that her contesting custody means she gets the kids by default just shows how shitty Americas court system can be
It's worse in India
@David Edosomwan Things are crazy here.

My best friends and I have quoted Liar Liar for 20 years. Never gets old
I love how at 0:06 the guy in the background comes in and he immediately covers his face when he sees the piece of paper stuck to Jim Carrey's head like he's trying not to laugh and you can kind of see him crack up before he covers his face

There is no other movie that makes me go from laughing to crying as fast as this one

@Aluzky The fact that you've decided to be in a relationship with a dog just shows how insecure your fragile little ego is. I feel awful for that dog that's being abused daily by some power hungry egomaniac who can't handle even the tiniest bit of human conflict. On the bright side, you're out the gene pool, so that's good. We really don't need weak, insecure people like you in this world.

I really hope the father got to see his kids again , because that end was so sad 😞
ummm .. it was a MOVIE .. not a documentary

AND SWOOSH! THAT'S THE GAME!!!
