The crazy thing is the school made the students retake the test twice and they still aced both of them, just proves how much of a figure Jaime Escalante was for students
My favorite scene in the movie is the girl who turns hers in early on the retest, because she has a college interview to get to, and still passes the test.
@@GodwynDi she actually didnt finish the test because she daid she had an appointment that couldnt wait...either way she was one of the clever ones
Re-take it TWICE? That's not how I remember the movie unfolding.
They took the initial test. They were accused of cheating. They re-tested. Right?
They admitted to cheating the first time.
This accusation is as real as Jussie Smollets
We need more teachers like Mr. Escalante who are passionate and determined to teach their students and have the guts to stand up for them.

sandinyourshoes they were just jealous
Bro, the public schools don't want that. The students and parents do, but they don't matter because they're sub-servant to the masters of the governmental domain. Come on, man. Haven't you done your research?
Ankit, not really. They were getting paid either way. And the school secretary wasn't phased by any of it. She simply told Escalante that "the computers were delivered." She wouldn't have been caught dead taking math classes.
I have only met one teacher that was like this and she was fired for caring more about the students than defending the staff. She actually made you want to learn. I'll never forget you Mrs. Hall. You'll never know the impact you had on your students.
Exactly what happened to Mr Escalante. The faculty drove him out because obviously demanding more from the students means more work for the teachers. They protested and got him out.

Why? It’d solve nothing. You don’t get a free pass to break laws just because you don’t like the unfair system.
Mr. Escalante was later driven out of the public school system by the Teacher's Union. His success with kids that had been deemed "hopeless" made their consistent failure look bad.
Holy Smokes, I never knew that. Had to look it up, and sadly you are correct. What a damn shame. But......why am I not surprised?

I've had a few badass teachers like this they are rare but you never forget them
They are rare because teachers like Escalante get fired most of the time for being "problematic".
I've never seen this movie but I love that teacher. Awesome man sticking up for his kids.
He was kind of under ground legend when I was going to school in LA. A name you heard teachers talk about quite often because he showed the core reason why the education system was failing (and still is failing) children. Some teachers loved him. Some teacher didn't like him. The movie shows you the conflict at the teachers meetings but it doesn't show all the problems Mr. Escalante had. He had a lot of conflicts with the school board and the Teacher's Union. Both treated him like crap. They didn't like the fact that he would ignore their rules and policies in favor of giving his students a real education. I am not saying that teacher pay and lack of resources are not a problem with the American system. But Mr. Escalante came from Bolivia where he was also an educator which had less resources and pay then in the USA. For 10 years at Garfield HS, he proved the school system was wrong on so many levels....Yet nothing has changed and education has only declined worse. But its funny that teachers who have followed his examples have actually had incredible success with their students. Ganas! That's all it takes.
You should watch it, you won't regret it!
Best teacher/student movie ever. A great, true story.
I hope you watch it. It’s only $3. Less than a burger.
He was reaching those keeedz
I had one math teacher like him. He made math fun and easy. I suffered from bad math anxiety but the way he taught he made it look like a walk in the park.
Yeah I had a guy like that with geometry. He was an American but it spent some time over in England with his family and unfortunately went back over there at the end of the year.

That exiting comment...
DevilDogMuNky when the chipotle worker gives you a baby scoop of meat
Great scene and really, they all had their points. Escalante knew how well he taught his kids and how well they responded, and rightly felt unfairly accused. But Ramirez and Pearson also were right - it didn't have to be racism, just a school where students usually all failed, suddenly doing incredibly... that had to be suspicious. Still, you can't help but cheer for Escalante... awesome job by Olmos here!
Escalante was right - bless him for having the ganos to stick up for his kids. I think those investigators had something to hide - or they would have showed him the kids' completed tests upon request. Also, dramatic turn around or not, if the same situation happened at a school with a wealthier demographic, they wouldn't be so quick to investigate - plus they know that the parents of students @ a wealthy school would be quick to sue their asses for what amounts to defamation of character, etc.
@@alexisdiva9 They never show the tests, and I recalled never getting an actual look at what I got wrong on a test. Only a blanket score. Standardized testing is done in the dark this way, and I'm sure there was a very detailed (and, of course, full of circular logic) argument for why which I heard growing up. But I was well aware after hitting 6th grade the tests were really kinda BS. They're just present to give reasons NOT to fund certain schools.

I wish this portrayal of an educator, who actually cares about their students, was apparent in real life. We need more caring and nurturing teachers who are actually there to teach, connect with their students and watch them students succeed.
Mr. Escalante was a real guy and most of the film is pretty accurate, especially in the classroom. Only it took him years to accomplish. Ganas! I was in the LA Unified School district back in the 80s. Escalante was an underground legend among some teachers. But he was also controversial. The system and the teacher's union gave him a lot of trouble because he cared more about his students than policy.
Oh my lord. I did not know this, and I am researching it right now. Thank you for the information!!! :)

Mr. Escalante is the reason why I want to become a teacher, I want to improve the lives of kids less fortunate, like my teachers did for me. My teachers inspired me despite coming from a broken home, poor background, and being a racial minority. I had a US history teacher that was so passionate about her job she got everyone eager about coming to class. I forget her name but she was absolutely amazing. We'd come to class with music playing from the time period. Half of the lights were always off and the windows were always open. At the end of the year she took the top 3 highest scores for the TAKS test (Texas state test that determines if you pass or fail the grade) and she told the class the top 3 scores and I was #1. She recommended me for AP government but I turned it down. She told me she was disappointed and that I had a lot of potentional but I didn't care about school enough. Just history class so I needed the easier class to make sure I passed it. I ended up getting the 2nd highest score on the US history portion in the entire grade (11th grade). My friend Daniel got the highest by literally 1 question. I missed 1 question.

Jay Flippen True, but they had just as much proof of him saying that as they did with the students cheating.
The whole reason why Escalante is confronting them in such a hostile manner is because, in the previous scene, these two were very accusational, ominous and rather nasty in their interrogation of the students.
To be fair, they made it personal at this point
They can't prove to him the kids were cheating. They can't prove he threatened them. Learn to analyze.

I took Spanish in High School and I was so grateful that two different teachers on two separate occasions played this for us in class. It’s such an impactful movie.
While this is almost certainly a case of discrimination, the issue they bring up is that when a school who has historically preformed extremely poorly suddenly within the gap of a single year gets some of the best grades possible there is a reasonable amount of suspicion that should be applied there. Not to the level that these detectives were applying of course, but it should be looked into because improvement like that normally doesn't happen in the blink of an eye, its just statistically improbable.
I had a middle school english teacher names Mrs. Peoples. She was and still is the best teacher I have ever met. She taught english when I was in 6th or 7th grade not sure about the year. But she was just liked that, cared for every kid like they were her own. The only reason I remember her so well is because of how much she helped me. Not only with class but as a person. She also had this really thick southern accent that was just really enjoyable to listen to, at least for me. The most unfortunate part is that her and her husband past away during a trip to I believe china or somewhere in eastern asia. I even think it was a trip for school. If I remember right it was because of an accident involving the airplane. I never got the full story. RIP to her and all alike.

@@brendaluv2017 they shouldn’t assume people are bad because of their race but also not assume immediately they are good

(Jaime Escalante)
''Dreams accomplish wonderful things.''
To accomplish great things we must not only act, but also dream; not only plan, but also believe. Hold fast to dreams, for if dreams die, life is a broken-winged bird that cannot fly. If you were born without wings, do nothing to prevent them from growing.
I enjoyed watching this movie in Math since the 7th grade, I’m in college now, and I watch it almost all the time. Its a great movie

That’s terrible! So disappointing to hear.
“No proof of wrongdoing, only a suspicion of cheating”
“If they don’t, everyone will assume they cheated”
So no proof but they’re allowed to make a conclusion. And he has the nerve to say they’re being patient and listening to his complaints while they basically say suspicion and Likely hood is enough to punish them in the absence of proof
What punishment? Dr. Ramírez simply investigated. The students were under suspicion. Period.
This video is age restricted? That's sad.
I was never the best at school. I always had mediocre grades. Mostly C’s maybe a D thrown in there somewhere but along came this teacher who just knew how to teach me. She taught me so much about learning and school. She taught me things about life too just talked to me about the future and growing up. She called me smart when everybody else didn’t. I really appreciate her and everything she taught me. Before she left with her husband to a new state to start a family she gave her class this bracelet that said “never give up, you got this.” I was in middle school when I received that bracelet, I’m 28 now and I have that bracelet framed.

Edward James Olmos is the only actor who could have made this movie work. This was his best film!
There is two kinds of racism, Mr. Escalante. Judging a group because they are a minority, and not judging a group because they are a minority.
What happened was that the students all uniformly answered a few of the questions wrong in exactly the same way. The issue turned out to be that Escalante had made a mistake in teaching a particular Calculus method and since the kids learned the techniques "step by step", they all duplicated Escalante's mistake. If you didn't know that, the duplication of their errors would be a huge red flag indicating cheating.

In 1984, I was a first year teacher at a high school and I can tell you first hand how cruel teachers can be when a new upstart becomes the schools favorite teacher. I was voted teacher of the year that year and was told that teachers rebelled and the determination was made that a first year teacher could not be teacher of the year. I quickly was transferred to a great charter type school that had amazing teachers. I was no longer the best teacher at the school and I was ok with that. I liked that and I loved being in such a first class teaching environment. 8 years later I moved from California to Virginia. I was approached one day by a lovely teacher who said, “please watch your back, the teachers here are trying to stab you in the back and get you fired.” I wash shocked and that pained me. That year, I had by far the highest AP History scores of any teacher in that school. The administration was stunned and yet they took all my APs away from me that year and gave me 5 separate preps (courses) for the next school year all out of my subject area. I knew what they were doing. I walked into the principals office immediately and turned in my resignation. It was the last year I ever taught. I’d had enough of strifes and jealousies.

@@valuecalc Sure they care. They care about protecting their position, and they care about executing their particular vision of what education ought to look like.
What they _don't_ care about is whether or not their particular vision of education is actually effective, counterproductive, or even harmful; all that matters is that it's _their_ vision and they will do whatever is necessary to prove themselves right. If that means they have to feed a few hundred kids to the machine, then so be it.
@@PhycoKrusk, yes. There's just too much bureaucracy in the school systems. The department chair Raquel became very angry when Escalante decided to teach his students the calculus course. She represents real faculty and top-brass administrators who don't seek changes. It's "backstage politics" getting ugly.
Mr. Escalante….Teacher Of The Year. End of discussion 🙏🏻🙏🏻
I forgot about this movie! ❤️. We need more teachers like this & people in general like this. These type of morales seem highly non existent.
This is honestly my favorite part of the movie.
The investigator said something very important here that is no longer allowed to even be questioned anymore when it comes to the idea of racism. "There are two kinds of racism. Singling out a group because they are members of a minority and NOT singling out a group because the are members of a minority." That second part is now gone and not allowed to be questioned anymore if any idea of wrong doing is done, heaven forbid if said group is part of a minority and thought to be involved. Ask the question and you will be called a racist.
Sure.....
This movie is relevant even for today. Let's juxtaposition it with the Varsity Blues case currently taking place. That girl, forgot her name, hardly attended school yet she still graduated.
I wish teachers had balls like this in real life...
this part never happened (the irregularity was found by comparing previous scores, not names), yet the movie is the vehicle for exactly this part. Makes me think.
