Mark ..thanks for your reviews.. People like you make it easier for some of us who are trying to make up or minds and decide what is the better option. Keep it up Bro! and thanks again.. Greetings from Venezuela!!
Thank you for the comparison. This kind of review really make an informed decision! It's very close one. However, the part where you said "better photo experience" towards the end 17:38, I think AS100 has better button placement than AZ1 on the camera body. And AZ1 is better suited for people who don't mind using phone app/live-view remote. Hope you can clarify this.
matt azhar The button on the AS100 has to be pressed pretty hard and because of it's placement causes the camera to tilt forward. Since the camera take the photo before the camera stop shaking, you often get less sharp or motion blurred images. The AZ1's is closer to the center balance.
Fantastic comparison once again! I'm wondering if for me it makes any sense to upgrade to the AZ1. thinking i should actually go for something more versatile with some zoom controls and more features. really interested in something that'll shoot 4K like that sony cam from awhile back that was going for around $2000.
@mert Osman Can't respond to you directly because of your privacy settings but do you have any examples you can share for others to check out? Also what SD card were you using. Just curious, always happy to get feedback on what others thought. Thanks :D
nice, this is what i was waiting for. I'm commenting before watching :p I bought the AS100v a few weeks back, i hope it was the right decision ! watching .. now !
red tint was something I remember you commenting about during the as100 vs hero 3 black comparison, I wonder if sony decided to tweak the vivid mode to more closely mimic the go pro images most are used to seeing
Hi Mark! Great job about this cams. I have a AZ1 and have a few questions about all possible noise reduction filming w low light or night. Do you prefer M4 > PS, HQ or STD ... Or is XAVC S better..?? ...=) many thanks.
Great video review u have done there Mark!!I am always watching your videos and comparison tests!!Thanks for sharing!! I am into buying the AS 100 for better image quality even that is bigger than the AZ1!
Thank you for an excellent review. I just purchased the AS100V. If i may add my own humble opinion on the hardware side of the product, the Live View Remote is awesome but, you will find that the velcro strap is just long enough for your wrist and if you wanna use it over a winter jacket and thick gloves it will be a mission to wear it every time. Also the package only came with one multi-USB cable for charging and without an AC adapter. Other then that it seems like a solid camera, with a very solid case and although pairing was a struggle for me, using it with the remote is very easy and i love the features that the Remote has where you can even use it as a wrist watch. If i may bother you with a question Mark? For motorcycle riding on off road surfaces which setting would you recommend as optimal? And can i use Go Pro attachments on my case? Thank you again for such an effort to do this review.
Hi Mark, what is the battery life between these 2 cameras? i know that the as100v has longer, but i´m not sure how more long the as100v can record. Kind regards, Abraham
I'm am having the hardest desition between the all new Az1 with its incredibly small size or the standard AS100 HD. I will mainly be using this for action and scenic video purposes, such as snowboarding and beautiful mountain views. I am looking for the best resolution however something small and not to noticable. I just want to know if you can notice a difference between the two in video resolution. Although the fact that you can't change a single video setting on the Az1 through the camera is a huge bummer. Because I am often in the mountains where there is no WiFi avalible there for not allowing me to adjust the settings through my phone. Can you change the video settings with the GPS watch on the AZ1? Can you change the video settings through your phone with 4G not WiFi? What is new about the Az1 that the AS100 HD doesn't have? And what is it that the AS100 has but not the Az1? Greatly appreciated if you could reply!
Hello! Thanks so much for the video. I have the AS100V, and I'm wondering what software do you use for editing your footage? Like adding color correction and such. Thanks!!
I use Adobe Premiere but you can actually use GoPro Studio with Sony footage (fairly easy and free). Both are easy to get up and running on with 1-2 10 minute youtube tutorials. Also there is Sony's new Action Cam software but I haven't had much time to use it.
Great comparison. They are really close. It really comes down to usability with the in camera settings vs the app. I chose the in camera settings for my style of use. I love my AS100v.
As100 is great. Especially with Photos minus the instant shutter and back button. Would love to see a new version with the button adjustments uptop.. Also a dedicated Wifi button on the AZ1 was greatly appreciated .
Great video Mark! Do you know how the digital image stabilisation works exactly? I am interessted in whether it makes the 1080p video first and crops it then to correct the camera movement, or if it uses the full sensor size for the stabilisation and makes the 1080p video after the 13.5MP sensor image was cropped and stabilized? The first thing would mean that filming with steadyshot will result in a lower image quality, while the second one would still offer a higher quality since it would use the while sensor resolution. I hope you understand what I mean ;) I also noticed that my AS100V was sharper in the foreground, but everything in the background was a bit blurry. I think Sony did the same what Gopro did with the Hero 3+ series: reducing the focal length to let the camera appear sharper. But similar to the Gopro I was able to fix that by removing the case and screwing the lense a few degree.
I believe it applies the counter motion and distortion then digitally crop the center portion of the image sensor after. Always felt the Depth of Field with Sony was pretty good but would like to see a bump in clarity next time around.
hi just a quick question, people say that youtube does not do the picture justice due to the compresion. where can i download samples of the native formats to view them in there full glory ? pro mode ,xavc, e.t.c thanks in advance
While it's true compression and data rates will be lower on some channels our channel got a higher data rate being pushed out to viewers for providing quality content for a few years. However we still are affected by it just not as bad as other channels. Our videos are exported at a bit rate of around 32Mbs to 42 Mbs. UA-cam caps it around 06-28 I believe but it was something I couldn't get a clear answer for when I did some classes at UA-cam Space LA. That being said I don't have the funds to do any local hosting ATM. This isn't the first time someone has asked but I am hoping to be able to throw up raw clips sometime in mid 2015.
AZ1 was better with battery life. Seemed to be smarter about handling downtime. Not saying it blows the AS100V out of water in this category but it definitely was noticeably better. As for the AS15, I'll try but might not be till Dec.
Hello, thank you so much for reviewing these cameras, the review went much more in depth than I expected. I was wondering if you had any experience with the Sony HDR AS20/b, or AS30, I didn't see any of your videos when I searched it on UA-cam. I'm considering it, and the AZ1 after watching your review and was wondering what your thoughts were. I primarily will use it for racing (Along with some mountain biking) where I need the 1080p 60FPS or 720p 120FPS, good night time footage, and be able to withstand a moderate amount of water (Maybe a few drops every minute for an hour). As well as decent battery life (Maybe 2-3hrs). Although I could easily mount it and plug a battery pack into it to length the life. Are there any major downsides to the AS20/b compared to the AZ1 in general? It's $50 cheaper and doesn't seem to have many drawbacks. Thank you for any help you can provide, and thank you for the great review.
If you go into our videos we have a few on the AS30. I recently picked up an AS20 and am using it in a budget camera comparison coming out in a few weeks (back logged on some other videos). I find the AZ1 to be better then both of these cameras however Sony did just come out with the AS200 drove the price of the older AS100 to $150 on Amazon for a little bit. The AZ1 is one of my fav cameras because of its size, but the AS100 is more powerful and possibly way cheaper now that the AS200 is out.
MarkHawkCam Thank you so much for the help. I have just two more questions, does each have a good battery life? And on the AZ1 you can use a phone to start and stop recording, does the AS100 also have this feature?
AS100 isn't the best on battery life especially when connected to the WIfi.It doesn't asuto power off when connected. You can start and stop recording but you cant power on (you can power off though by disconnecting the wifi, and the camera will auto shut off 1 minute later)
Thank you for the information, I think I will get the AS100, as it seems to have a better life than the AZ1. I also liked the more modes for the AS100, although I will have to deal with it being slightly bulkier. It will definitely be a nice upgrade to use that with a good mount rather than ductaping, and ziptying a 10 year old Kodiak camera to my car.
Does the as100 have 1 and 2 second intervals in time lapse, with updated firmware. I found some specs saying that the az1 has 1,2,5,10,30 and 60 second intervals and the as100 has 5,10,30,60 second intervals. I'd like to have the 1 and 2 second intervals on the as100.
Is it true there is no external microphone input, or anyway to use a external microphone with a mod, or USB like the Go-pro. Does any of the Sony's have a external microphone ? Thanks, yl
does any of these cameras are able to change the actually lens (not the case lens) to maybe flat ? would it be better if there was or a mod ? in terms of being practical the as100vr seems better as you dont have to use the remote especially if you forget to chage the phone or the remote , my doubts are on the sounds with the case and external mic ? great video been looking for this for ages now .. great work thanks dude
andrius tomaz There are mods out there to swap lens's out or you can rent ones here in Hollywood that have a lot of the hard work done. With the Sony Camera the issue is the case though not the lens on the camera.
For me, I'd go GoPro for MTN biking mainly because I love filming anything with a trail at 1440p mode. Extra field of view means I very rarely point the camera to high or low and capture everything from the sky to the ground. It records in 4:3 but since it's still HD I can crop it down to 16:9 if I want for an edit without scaling. Plus I can move the video up or down to get the perfect perspective ;)
Thanks so much for the vid. I was considering getting an az1 for my bicycle helmet to side mount since the as100v is too heavy for such a light helmet. I think i'll stick with top mounting it since the clarity and night time views seem better on mine than the mini. One thing I disagree with though is the audio. Wearing my Sennheisers I noticed a much warmer better tone out of the as100v than the az1 contrary to what you said though it's really hard to know for sure how right I am with how UA-cam compresses.
It wouldn't surprise me if the AS100 has better audio hardware inside. They are just fairly close to one another and would be happy with both results on most days.
Fogging was a big issue with the AS10, 15, and 30. The AS20, 100, and AZ1 don't seem to have that issue as bad since they appear to give off a good deal less of heat but I've seen fogging occur. Just not as much in the past. Still still an anti fog strip in there from Gopro's line of cameras when ever I take it to the beach. Never have any issues with fitting them in the case and I can pick them up at Best Buy or local surf shops easy.
AS100V. Better quality and the mini size nature of the AZ1 won't really benefit you. Only plus about the AZ1 would be the better battery life. However make sure you update the AS100V and it should help improve it with the 2.0 update.
AZ1 in terms of normal day usage. AZ1 just seems to drain less in ideal mode but it requires wifi on to change any settings. I assume though the AS100 would out perform though in a side by side test though since the AZ1's battery is so much smaller. Just make sure wifi is off on the AZ1 once you have the settings where you want.
I talk about photos at the end but the AS100V has better image quality while the AZ1 has the better button placement for taking photos. Sony just announced the 4k HDR X1000V. Basically a 4k version of this camera. Roughly $499 coming out in March with 1080p 120fps and 720p 240fps.
totaleclipse99 AS100 being phased out for the AS200. The AS100 is a better camera then the AZ1 imo but it's UI controls, options, and speeds are a bit slower. I have a video about this filmed but just recently came off crunch time at work and am playing catch up to get a lot of videos done.
Its easy to make DIY flat lenses for the case. Just add a flat watch face glass glued with silicone on a PVC ring with the same diameter as the lenses. I did it on mine and the picture is crystal clear, as it in air shot. Thank me later:)
Hey guys. I'm buying an HDR-100VR on Amazon. They're selling it for $430 with a 64gb sd card and all the accessories and more. Give me an idea. Does it sound like a Good deal?
Seems a little high to me. I'd pay around 299-349 for a brand new AS100V back in march with remote. Then another 75-80 for a proper micro SD card if you wanted it to be 64 gigs. Personally feels high and would shop around a little more.
MarkHawkCam Thanks man! your videos helped a lot! i'm buying the AZ1 today, it was just the mini that some people had in there video title that had me confused. you have a new subscriber! greetings from Sweden :)
MarkHawkCam Sure will! the test video that you made the quality looks great for the price but another video i saw it looked pretty shitty. im buying a microsdxc card today :)
Brian Lund Just watched that video you posted. I tried to put it through a lot of tests. I did run around with it a lot but it is possible that when in higher frame rates / steady shot that you are no longer in Pro-Mode. Make sure you card writes over 50Mbs. I put a few suggestions in the more information section.
koray1921 Answered it a few times in the comment here but to sum it up. Head to Head the AS100 will last longer while filming. However chances are the AZ1 will last longer during on and off normal use thats to better battery saving ideal modes when you are inbetween shooting. Generally found my AZ1 outlasting my AS100 by 15%-20%
Toujourscroireensoi Like the button position updates, battery life, and size of the AZ1 but overall image quality and color of the AS100V is better for me.
Hey Mark, have you tried refocusing the Sony as-100v? Just like whats done in this video ua-cam.com/video/C4-2Q1vAHsE/v-deo.html I use the as100v when I ride my motorcycle and the stock focus just plainly sucks. Its clear up to 10 feet but after that its blurry. I refocused the lense and now I can see plates up to 30-40 feet away, and things that are 50+feet away are more sharper now. Of course though, anything up to 3 feet is a little bit blurry after refocusing.
I think it's cool I just don't see many people doing that because they fear they'd break it or damage the lens. It's a good option but personally feel it's up to Sony to accommodate to it's consumers wants. GoPro did a good job with the Hero3+ to Hero4. Hopefully Sony takes note. Cool video though. Thanks for sharing.
"Update" just to let everyone know Sony just came out with an update for this HDRAZ1 on 12-18-2014,go to their website or connected your camera to ActionCam movie creator if you don't have it downloaded it, then 1-Go to settings 2-on the right should say "update" and look for the 1.01 update for GPS and pictures.it took a while, I have a mac so you have to pick the right download for your pc.follow the steps, my pc shut of because of the screen saver and had to start all over again removing battery and all, good luck! ps I miss big bear mountain! used to live in Alta loma!
I like the AZ1 sound, size, button layout, and cuteness ;) Do feel the AS100 is a overall better quality camera but the AZ1 is arguably the best $250 on the market. But we'll see how it holds up against the GoPro Hero3+ series soon.
The GPS in the AZ1 is in the newer remote which I didn't know when I first ordered it. I haven't tried the AS100V using the new Action Cam software. I'll prob test it at our next track day in December.
Best reviews on youtube as usual, excellent work Mark, Thank you :)
:D Thanks for the feedback
Mark ..thanks for your reviews.. People like you make it easier for some of us who are trying to make up or minds and decide what is the better option. Keep it up Bro! and thanks again.. Greetings from Venezuela!!

Nice review, I have the HDRAS100V and I have been very happy with it. Waiting for 4k 60fps...
Thank you for the comparison. This kind of review really make an informed decision! It's very close one.

remi zik should be ready now.
MarkHawkCam yep, since 56 minutes ;) thanks though
remi zik haha my office is in a space with poor wifi. Sometimes my messages don't go through when I think they are.
MarkHawkCam ;)
red tint was something I remember you commenting about during the as100 vs hero 3 black comparison, I wonder if sony decided to tweak the vivid mode to more closely mimic the go pro images most are used to seeing
Would be a weird move, I think when i compare the AS100V to the Hero3+ we'll have to compare those red levels.
@Mert Osman Can't replay to your comment due to you privacy settings. Do you have any shots you did online? Also curious what MicroSD used. Thanks :D
Hi Mark! Great job about this cams. I have a AZ1 and have a few questions about all possible noise reduction filming w low light or night. Do you prefer M4 > PS, HQ or STD ... Or is XAVC S better..?? ...=) many thanks.
nice job, thank you...did anybody notice the big cloud eye or is just me at 2:35?
HA! Look at that... kinda creepy and cool.
hey mate, really great video, thanks. Now can finally make a sensible chose on witch waterproof camera I can get for my videos.
Great video review u have done there Mark!!I am always watching your videos and comparison tests!!Thanks for sharing!! I am into buying the AS 100 for better image quality even that is bigger than the AZ1!

Do you think image stabilizer OFF helps to get less grain at low light?

Where can i buy HDR-AZ1? i cant find it on sony websites.
Might be because they announced 2 new models to replace it. The X1000 and AS200 both coming out in March.
is it possible to take photos while video taping like we can for go pros?
Don't think so but I'll double check tonight. If it does I think it might have a catch. I'll follow up soon.
on the video with the guy on the guitar....how far was the camera?
+Vladimir Ocampo Few feet. Maybe 4-5 feet
+MarkHawkCam thank you
I see no differences, what's your opinion? What about battery life?
Would you be able to compare older Action Cam (eq. AS-15) with AZ1/AS100V?
AZ1 was better with battery life. Seemed to be smarter about handling downtime. Not saying it blows the AS100V out of water in this category but it definitely was noticeably better.
As for the AS15, I'll try but might not be till Dec.
Hello, thank you so much for reviewing these cameras, the review went much more in depth than I expected. I was wondering if you had any experience with the Sony HDR AS20/b, or AS30, I didn't see any of your videos when I searched it on UA-cam. Does it fog and overheat while underwater, or at anytime? My as-15 does
Fogging was a big issue with the AS10, 15, and 30. The AS20, 100, and AZ1 don't seem to have that issue as bad since they appear to give off a good deal less of heat but I've seen fogging occur. Just not as much in the past. Still still an anti fog strip in there from Gopro's line of cameras when ever I take it to the beach. Never have any issues with fitting them in the case and I can pick them up at Best Buy or local surf shops easy.
which would be better for me? for the most part I will be using it with a suction cup mount on my car
AS100V. Better quality and the mini size nature of the AZ1 won't really benefit you. Only plus about the AZ1 would be the better battery life. However make sure you update the AS100V and it should help improve it with the 2.0 update.
Thanks for the input, great video as well.
What battery has longer life ?
AZ1 in terms of normal day usage. AZ1 just seems to drain less in ideal mode but it requires wifi on to change any settings. I assume though the AS100 would out perform though in a side by side test though since the AZ1's battery is so much smaller. Just make sure wifi is off on the AZ1 once you have the settings where you want.
Thx for the video ! Great comparison. Whats your opinion about the Sony HDR-AZ1 ? What's your fovourite ?? Whats camera make the best photo ??
I talk about photos at the end but the AS100V has better image quality while the AZ1 has the better button placement for taking photos. Sony just announced the 4k HDR X1000V. Basically a 4k version of this camera. Roughly $499 coming out in March with 1080p 120fps and 720p 240fps.
So why would the az1 be more than $125 more than the AS100v? Just got the AS100v from BB for $141 after watching this review. Thank you!
totaleclipse99 AS100 being phased out for the AS200. The AS100 is a better camera then the AZ1 imo but it's UI controls, options, and speeds are a bit slower. I have a video about this filmed but just recently came off crunch time at work and am playing catch up to get a lot of videos done.
Thank you so much for the test
No problem man, thanks for taking to comment as always ;)
but the fisheye is supposed to make the video bend alot so the middle looks big
Which is better? AZ1 or AS100?
how you zoom with the az1 ?
Sasa Lakic I'm doing my zoom in post to showcase issues a little easier.
definitly buying the as100
Its easy to make DIY flat lenses for the case. Just add a flat watch face glass glued with silicone on a PVC ring with the same diameter as the lenses. I did it on mine and the picture is crystal clear, as it in air shot. Thank me later:)
So you get a remote with the az1
Scooter Media depends on the bundle. There are two.
Personally feels high and would shop around a little more.
is this the MINI HDR-AZ1? please can someone anwser that fast i really need to know :)
Yes, no idea why some call it the Mini. Says it no where on the box. Here is a size comparison from another project. imgur.com/a/uqDBx
MarkHawkCam Thanks man! your videos helped a lot! i'm buying the AZ1 today, it was just the mini that some people had in there video title that had me confused. you have a new subscriber! greetings from Sweden :)
I Love Sweden! Thanks for the feedback. Let me know what you think of it after you've had sometime with it :D
I put a few suggestions in the more information section.
what about the battery life?
koray1921 Answered it a few times in the comment here but to sum it up. Head to Head the AS100 will last longer while filming. However chances are the AZ1 will last longer during on and off normal use thats to better battery saving ideal modes when you are inbetween shooting. Generally found my AZ1 outlasting my AS100 by 15%-20%
hands down the best comparison. +1 sub. hope you gain more
Thanks :D Me too!
What's the app called?
For the Phone? Play Memories
Who win ?
"megapixel lens" lmao... great review though
Super vidéo super vlogs 👍 👍 🌷 🌷 🌷 🌷
which one do you like beste ?
best*
Toujourscroireensoi Like the button position updates, battery life, and size of the AZ1 but overall image quality and color of the AS100V is better for me.
AZ1 kick ass on sound
Hey Mark, have you tried refocusing the Sony as-100v?
Just like whats done in this video
ua-cam.com/video/C4-2Q1vAHsE/v-deo.html
I use the as100v when I ride my motorcycle and the stock focus just plainly sucks.
"Update" just to let everyone know Sony just came out with an update for this HDRAZ1 on 12-18-2014,go to their website or connected your camera to ActionCam movie creator if you don't have it downloaded it, then
1-Go to settings
2-on the right should say "update" and look for the 1.01 update for GPS and pictures.it took a while, I have a mac so you have to pick the right download for your pc.follow the steps, my pc shut of because of the screen saver and had to start all over again removing battery and all, good luck! ps I miss big bear mountain! used to live in Alta loma!
Anyone noticed that it's a 3D video...? :D
I even like the az 1 sound more, am i the only one?
I like the AZ1 sound, size, button layout, and cuteness ;) Do feel the AS100 is a overall better quality camera but the AZ1 is arguably the best $250 on the market. But we'll see how it holds up against the GoPro Hero3+ series soon.
MarkHawkCam Have you tested the GPS? And overall you would recommend the AS100 is that right?
The GPS in the AZ1 is in the newer remote which I didn't know when I first ordered it. I haven't tried the AS100V using the new Action Cam software. I'll prob test it at our next track day in December.
Sony AS100V the best. :)
You need someone that teaches you how to stay underwater without holding your nose. It's very easy!
I've tried... more suited for being in the air then the ocean. I think I'll just order goggles next time to try and get some more stand ins :p
MarkHawkCam Actually, you can buy nose clips for underwater, they are available in sports retailers and very cheap.
Umm its 360p for me
1080p just wrapped up processing. These longer videos take about 30-90 mins after uploading to fully complete.
MarkHawkCam Oh no I thought it was only me. Take your time though.
It's an automated process. Do wish I could choose to hold off from it posting till processing was done on all formats.
MarkHawkCam you can, just keep the video "private" for until the 1080p is processed, then set it to "public" ;)
6:20 nice girl
Why you holding your nose under water?
TheGadler Think it's pretty obvious... I'm allergic to water.
Бля по русски мне кто скажет какая пизже?
