+ eveRide ADV Thanks for sharing this! After buying a AS20 Sony Action Cam about 6 months ago and checking every mounting option I could find, yours wins hands down. I bought a spare housing for the previous camera model to hack for an external microphone and mounted the camera in it as you suggest, I put mine on the right hand side of my helmet to keep the plug at the bottom. Honestly you'd think the thing was bolted on its so secure, great video and great idea thanks again mate! For anyone thinking of doing this project the whole process takes only about an hour from start to finish, it really is a beautiful simple solution that looks great when complete :-)
Thanks, actually i just bought a SONY Action Cam HDR-AS300, i love the camera, and now with this vídeo i can get a better footage and better videos. Greetings from Colombia.
I had to dig through your videos because I remember you making this video. The new X 3000 showed up! Great video I purchased that same type of aluminum. today it's going for 8.99. Now all I need to do is remove the back door for the mic port. again great video!
I am gonna have to do some digging. I was really looking at the Drift HD Ghost but with all the loving your giving that one.. I may have to look into it more....
seriosly thinking about this camera... but i shoot 960 48fps with my gopros - then i have a huge crop area to crop in editing... does that camera have that setting or what do you suggest? I find shooting in 1080 doesnt work well ok a snowmobile, its too hard to find the right field of view when riding.
Hello.Does the camera fit into the waterproof case when you have dual lock on it?As it is on 1:05 of the video. Also, how hard is it, to remove the dual lock from the camera or the helmet.
Wondering your thoughts on the new entry level GoPro HERO announced today. Looks like a lot of camera for the price ($130). I'm going to be in the market for something in the next few months for kayaking and motorcycle video and photos. Thanks for your thoughts and enjoy your west coast trip!
John Ogren Thanks! The trip has been amazing so far! I really like GoPro and I really like Sony, and there are other awesome options out there, too. It just comes down to what will meet your needs and fit the budget best. They're all good!
Not the most elegant but surely the best common sense solution I've seen so far. I have a system helmet which is really a nightmare to attach a camera on it because of the movable chin piece, and to make it' more complicated, my desired nr 1 camera is a Gitup 2 (the Sony HDR-AS200 is probably better, but i'm not willing to spend that much money). Anyway your video might offer a solution.
How do you (yes, this could/should be another vid idea :-) ) set up the aux. mic? I assume you use one recording for this stuff. Thanks again for the fun and informative vids you do.
Man, I'm so glad to see this vid. I'm seriously considering doing this for my rides on the DL650 but I'm super concerned about it getting torn off at highway speeds. I see in a lot of your vids that you mostly ride offroad with this setup, but have you taken it on the highway? Can you give me some feedback with regards to the highway noise (I'm assuming it generates a lot of wind noise) and its strength when up against extreme winds like highway speeds+?
+SnapIntoASlimJim OhYeah Those are some great questions. At highway speeds it works quite well with a mic inside the helmet. I was on the highway a lot in this series and it worked great! ua-cam.com/video/SJDgbmlm6Rc/v-deo.html I'll probably be making a helmet setup video very soon to go over all the tips of wind noise etc.
Nice trails! And I am glad that finaly there is helmet mount without any GoPro/Sony intermediate pieces between camera and helmet. Since I am using it just for go-cart, I am using only some shitty velcro copy and handstrap as failsafe. And it works great! So thanks for sharing this much heavy-duty version of mine.
Excellent method bruda'!!! I wish I knew this before all that paraphernalia I used to mount mine was attached... Makes my neck tired holdin' all that up, your idea is much better.
another thing you can do is bend the flat around and use a piece of foam between the metal and the camera and a 1/4-20 bolt and attach it that way, that's what I did with my mount for the Bronco (pics on my facebook)
eveRide ADV well I used steel but same difference. you just have to anneal the aluminum with a propane torch and it will do the same thing so long as you don't rip it. There I go sounding like a welder again.
I was considering buying an action cam over a gopro. My only worry is that it'll die the first second I dump my bike hard, which will happen. I don't want to think about paying $200+ for a new cam every trip, too. Your input on this would be awesome, and the picture on the as100v looks awesome enough for me so that's not a problem.
Xeil They're pretty resilient. I haven't really hammered mine, but it has taken some hits with dropped helmets etc. They do come with a case a-la gopro but it's tough to mod to accept a mic while in the case. There are little lens covers that can be bought... they may be a good investment.
Fantastic I can't believe I have been searching the wide web watching 20 min unboxing videos and you had this totally figured out for me already thanks a million Eve Ride
Thanks again for the info on the good deal for the Sony Action Camera. This mount works awesome too. I have made one for my son's bike helmet, long board, and kayak too all using the same basic design idea. I do have a question for you about microphones for the sony camera. What microphone do you recommend I get for the camera to using while on the motorcycle? Also my son wants me to ask you if you have any eveRide stickers that you could send him. Thanks, and stay safe while you keep on riding.
David Ringel That's awesome! I am continually blown away by how well the dual lock holds! The mic I currently use and like is the MOVO lavalier mic, it's about $10 less than the mic I previously used, the ATR3350 and is essentially the same. www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00HX40Q3C/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=390957&creativeASIN=B00HX40Q3C&linkCode=as2&tag=everide-20&linkId=BFLMER6WR65B37AQ As for some free stickers, I'd love to send some! There's a form at everide.org/fund-the-adv where you can put in your address and info and I'll get one to him soon! :)
David Ringel I am just using a cheep lapel mic I purchased form eBay and had sent out form China... only cost a couple of dollars... Works well. Just needs a standard 3.5mm jack. These ship directly out of China and work well... I am just using one of these: www.ebay.com/itm/Portable-Mini-3-5mm-Tie-Lapel-Lavalier-Clip-Microphone-for-Lectures-Teaching-FO-/291352378927?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_2&hash=item43d5f47e2f
Hey eveRide, do you link the Sena headset to the sony camera? You have videos with multiple people talking. Is that a separate feed? If so, how do you record the Sena output? Keep up the good work. I am now in the hunt for a dual sport and blame you for it. Can't wait.
Thats a very nice solution! is there a waterprofed case for this Sony cam? Coz we here in Germany got a bit more rain than you in Utah ;) This inter com your are using? Is this a Sena? Cheers Luz
Luz Getting Lost It does come with a case, but then you can't mic it up :( Hooowever, the camera is "splash proof" and has some good seals around the case openings. I'd easily trust it in the rain, and I've washed it off under the tap before without issues.
Good video, thanks, did you say at the beginning that the camera was an AS15? Does that have flip mode? I am using an AS20, which does... so will keep that in mind. I am currently using a side mount method, and using a GoPro mount with a Sony Seleton case, which works well. I put a short video up showing the side mount when testing a microphone...
Just finally got my first XR650l adventure bike! Wish your trip came through Colorado! If you swing through Colorado any time in the future lets hit some trails!
Just curious what density of DualLock you are using and if you are using matching density on all 4 surfaces. They come in 100, 250, and 400 stems per inch. Typically 100 to 100 is very weak, and 400 to 400 is a nearly permanent connection.
+mike smith That's a good precaution... I haven't tried anything else, but haven't had any issues with the aluminum. Perhaps 3d printed would work as well?
Silly question. Does the flipped camera records normal or you flipped the image post production? ( Some cameras detect that and fix it automatically) Does this one do that?
Did you have any issues with the lens getting dirt or rock chips on it? I got the AS100 but I'm kinda worried because the skeleton frame doesn't protect the lens like the waterproof housing does.
MadDogMeh Funny enough I've had like 8000 plus miles without protection on the lens, and I have a few little scuffs but nothing that ruins the images being recorded. It is a gamble, though!
Thanks for the video..much appreciated. I just made the same mount as you have and also a couple more as I found myself in a creative mood :) one for the top of the helmet and one for the side. The only thing I did different is that on the side where you stick the camera I made it so that I can screw the case of the camera instead of using dual lock and so I just leave the mount on the helmet and screw and unscrew the camera so the dual lock can last a very long time as I don`t really lock/unlock it all that often. I`ll post the video on my channel later :) Thanks again..you saved me at least 50-100 euros worth of mounts :D
What do you think about the standard helmet mounts for the AS100V? I plan to use it in my racecar so it needs to be able to withstand the of a crash which could be 60-0 in a second. I have the standard helmets mounts but didn't want to just throw them on without seeing if anyone had any experience with how well they held on. If not I'll try this mod it looks like it works really well!
i know this is in some way a repeat of the similar mounting on your previous helmet (o#o Cheap, easy, & awesome universal mount for Sony Action Cam AS15, AS10, AS100) but, this one is a bit more informative, and a little easier to follow. i think using the aluminum strip instead of the random corner bracket was probably a good idea.
So my friend do you record in the pro mode? Did you get really great video card? Great vid, I am headed to home depot now to go get me some aluminum bracket! Oh also do you always mount it upside down, if so, why have you found that to be better? Thanks man.
Forrest Rider Yeah I'm pretty much a pro mode junkie, even though it EATS UP memory cards and hard drive space. It just looks soooooo smooth. However once UA-cam is done compressing everything, I thing regular mode 1080p at 60 would look just fine, too, and save a lot of HD space. I mounted it upside-down like that so that the lens is just a teeny bit lower. Also the screen is on the right side of the camera-- I needed the screen to face left so I could keep the camera on the left side of the helmet to operate it with my non-throttle hand, so I flipped it :)
I knew you must have had a good reason thanks for your research, I am looking forward to mounting it up. I already bent the aluminum and the dual lock should be here any day.
+Derek Hipolito My motorcycles only make it to about 85 (they're old enduros) but I think it would hold up. Just make sure to have a tether on it so if it does fail you're not out a camera :) Good luck man!
+Randy King I just bought some dual lock from Staples that can hold up to 10 lbs. tested it on the highway with my bike at a max speed of 130 km/h little 250 Wr R. holds perfectly fine. Just look for one that can hold 10 lbs through the amazon link everide has provided :D, it helps support his channel.
I just got my dual lock tape and while the velcro part is working great the adhesive isn't hold at all. And I've just been testing taking the camera off and on my helmet. The adhesive isn't holding on the helmets side. Could it be because my helmet is matte?
+Rex Cheng Hmmm I'm not sure. I haven't had that problem at all... in fact if anything, when I switch helmets or need to take the Dual Lock off, it's a pain to get it to un-stick. It might be because of a matte finish, but I've got a helmet with a matte finish and it's on there really good.
+eveRide ADV i guess it's just the roll I got, but what I ended up doing is putting some 3m vhb for the side that isn't sticking and seems good so far.
I think when I get my helmet my camera is going to be mounted dead nuts center in the front of the helmet and up high enough that I can see the light on the back of the camera. That is the one HUGE downside to the sony cameras is that they only have that back light to tell you if its on or not, and believe me it can be a pain to see, especially if you mount it odd locations (Bronco's rear view mirror) or wear polarized sun glasses.
I'm considering this camera. I set my sights on a Drift Ghost S but I'm kind of a cheapskate. I'll hopefully be motovlogging soon and I'm a Sony fan so I may consider this and save me some bucks.
+Sicko Traveye I would definitely get the Sony. They are often on great deals, and Amazon warehouse deals has some killer prices on used ones. I got a as200v for $200 on Warehouse Deals and the seller included an SD card, a case, and a whole bunch of extras. It was a great deal!
redwine That's a really good question. I wanted it on the left side so I could access it with my left hand a little easier without taking my right hand off the throttle. I had to flip it upside-down so I wouldn't cover the little screen with Dual Lock, and so that screen would be visible.
Brilliant! You should have gone with my bicycle helmet piece wrapped in duct tape and saved $6 LOL! Your way is Very professional. I love it. Maybe I'll change my set up once mine fails.
How did you get such good footage? Every other review like cycle cruza says this camera sux. And his footage made this camera look like crap. Here it looks awesome.
Nice idea, so when you crash, the dual-lock lets go and the piece of steel glides right into your neck or chest.... causing major injuries, this is a cool idea dont get me wrong and the angle and quality of the footage is second to none, but you would never get through bike and gear inspection at a race meet with that hanging off your helmet.
You could do the same with a piece of kydex, or similar. It's aluminum, not steel. Also I'd rather have it come loose on impact than have a strong lever mounted to my head.
I think the issue people have with dual lock is that they don't clean the surface properly before putting it on. Oils from your hands need to be removed. Also, certain cleaners will leave a residue and should not be used to clean the area.
Pan da That's true! I once put dual lock on some really smooth plastic and it didn't work too well. I roughed it up with a file, tried again, and it was on solid.
For woods riding dual lock sucks, every time you hit a branch it rips your camera off. Also eventually after years the dual lock starts to not stick as good then when you go to rip it off the strong adhesive takes the clear coat off your helmet and ruins your paint job. IMHO
We have to find a way to make that waterproof case use the mic(for crash protection and stone chips etc ) , i will sacrifice my case once my as200vr comes in as i never use underwater filming .
THB Yeah the placement of that mic jack is so tricky! I've ridden more than 10k miles with plenty of crashes with the camera "naked" like this and it has been alright, but only lately I caught some roost and the lens got scratched. I replaced the camera, but now use a lens protector at the very least :)
I wonder if the micro usb would support a mic , have any ideea? cause if it does a modification of the case should be incredible easy . You chan check my video see the qualiti of the as200v , i say it is amazing, will post some more with night time etc.
eveRide Thanks very much! I just finished my install according to the video, saved me a ton of confusion, priceless. Have the Sony AS100V, can't wait to use it.
PureRides lol getting it upside down is a weird choice, I know... but when I take the helmet off to adjust the settings the top of the helmet makes a nice base to steady it, so I flipped it over. Hahah weird quirks :D
Hey. thanks for your video. It was very helpful and I think I will do something pretty similar. I do have a question for you, do you have any interest in selling some of your dual lock tape? Maybe just 10 cm? I found it really expensive ($36) And I don't want to spend that much money knowing that I don't need that long tape... I can pay you $10 for 10 cm through whatever you prefer to use for a money transfer. Then you can just send me the tape. I live in GA. THANKS AND LET ME KNOW!
Good Velcro, Hmm Hmm Hmm uH Huuh hmmm. In a kinda coughing sound.... Also make or find a 3 to 4 foot ramp and you can jump 20+ feet safely after a couple of slower test runs. I am EX Motocross and small jumps are terrific fun. You don't have to jump 75 feet to get a thrill. Believe DAT..

ACEGR1 There is a setting in the cam to flip the image so it can film upside down. Has to be set prior to filming.
Thanks for the heads up!
What's the longevity of that dual lock tape? I mean compared to velcro which gets done after a few dozens of tearoffs.
John Grammaticus Oh man it lasts forever and ever... it's plastic barbs, pretty much... so unless those are sheered, it's gonna stay strong!

I have the standard helmets mounts but didn't want to just throw them on without seeing if anyone had any experience with how well they held on. If not I'll try this mod it looks like it works really well!
SFR023 I think the standard mounts would work fine on a racecar... the only reason I mount mine like this is to have access to that pesky mic jack!
What's the name of the helmet?
Thank's a lot for your answer!
Greetings from Germany
+nueschtsNutzername This is an afx fx39, and I really really like it!
eveRide ADV Thank's a lot! :-)
Now I have to find this helmet in Germany!! :-D
Hey Tyler, do you have a shot of your hat cam?
+Kevin Faul I do! Check out: ua-cam.com/video/Fecuy6WtMb0/v-deo.html
is the lens rotatable? wondering because your camera is mounted upside down
itubrrr I wish it had a rotating lens, but it just has a 180 flip mode.
do you see a huge difference in quality between mounting it with and without the housing?
Rammy Bold Sometimes the housing can get a little foggy, but that was the only difference I ever noticed.
Great video.
The stabilisation is amazing
i know this is in some way a repeat of the similar mounting on your previous helmet (o#o Cheap, easy, & awesome universal mount for Sony Action Cam AS15, AS10, AS100) but, this one is a bit more informative, and a little easier to follow. i think using the aluminum strip instead of the random corner bracket was probably a good idea.
Does anybody have the exact model of his helmet? It's a Voss helmet, but what is it specifically called?
I already bent the aluminum and the dual lock should be here any day.
will this hold up in 100+ mph? thanks
+Derek Hipolito My motorcycles only make it to about 85 (they're old enduros) but I think it would hold up. Just make sure to have a tether on it so if it does fail you're not out a camera :) Good luck man!
+eveRide ADV the dual lock can hold up to 5lbs so if its aerodynamic enough then yes it should easily hold.
Awesome! I did the same to my helmet but instead of aluminum bar i ended up using a steel boiler fastener! Works like a charm and you wont regret it!
it's really, really ridiculously good looking!
ROCKIN RODNEY Not too bad eh? I love the way it looks on there.
OtisENGINEuity very, VERY true. Dear Sony, are you listening? Please make a camera with a better indicator of whether it's on or off. :)
great information. amazing little SONY cam.
+eveRide ADV Yeah I'm keeping an eye out. By the time I have the funds they'll either be even cheaper or gone lol
why do you mount it on the left side? and why upside down?
redwine That's a really good question. I wanted it on the left side so I could access it with my left hand a little easier without taking my right hand off the throttle. I had to flip it upside-down so I wouldn't cover the little screen with Dual Lock, and so that screen would be visible.
Nice one, can't wait to try mine
I love dual lock!
***** It's amazing stuff, right? I buy it in bulk because I use it on everything!
Brilliant! You should have gone with my bicycle helmet piece wrapped in duct tape and saved $6 LOL! Your way is Very professional. I love it. Maybe I'll change my set up once mine fails.
Ride AMAP Yeah this whole mounting thing isn't our first rodeo, eh? We just keep getting better at it :)
Mmm upside down footage not a problem? :)
+Momekh The Sony has a function to "flip" the image, so it will record up-side down. It's a great little camera!
where are you driving?
+Dupa Krowa This is in St. George, Utah :)
+Jared Bayles Right on! If you're on Facebook, join Dixie Dual Sport Riders Utah and we'll ride! facebook.com/groups/847102418692168
Like your DIY Idea, well Done.!!!
another great how to video. Stay safe
Tankerman Thanks sir :)
man thanks a lot for the info!!! you really really helped me!
I roughed it up with a file, tried again, and it was on solid.
rough 'n it up never crossed my mind till I saw your vid. thanks for the advice!
Great stuff nicely done
Thumbs up
got same problem
eveRide Thanks very much! I just finished my install according to the video, saved me a ton of confusion, priceless. Have the Sony AS100V, can't wait to use it.
Thanks
Thanks for nice idea :)
Keeping It Simple. Looks great!
***** Yeah it ended up pretty clean this time. Glad you like it :)
niice, thanks buddy
Why didn't you put it on the other side? You wouldn't have to put it uppside down then :)
the eveRide.org sticker is on the other side. :)
PureRides lol getting it upside down is a weird choice, I know... but when I take the helmet off to adjust the settings the top of the helmet makes a nice base to steady it, so I flipped it over. Hahah weird quirks :D
eveRide ADV I also just found out that the as100 has a flip option unlike my as10. . .that is mounted upside down :P
Hey. thanks for your video.
Ianmoksh $10 for 10 cm is a lot! Send me a PM and I'll send you some. I'm nearly out, but I can spare a bit :)
eveRide ADV
I sent you a message. Thanks.
usefull and funny video
i would recommend your channel i subscribed it
Enduro Garage Thanks so much! Hopefully there will be many tips in the future, too :)
no problem, how do you like my vids? :)
Osom!
I just made this but it's not as good 😂😅
wrong site on your helmet
Good Velcro, Hmm Hmm Hmm uH Huuh hmmm. In a kinda coughing sound.... Also make or find a 3 to 4 foot ramp and you can jump 20+ feet safely after a couple of slower test runs. I am EX Motocross and small jumps are terrific fun. You don't have to jump 75 feet to get a thrill. Believe DAT..
LOL.....RIGHT after I sent you a Message asking you which Camera....Figures...
Yknow whats funny about this video... the sony gopro hero4 has been announced XD and is now for sale lol
Derrick Ortiz Yeah I'm dying to see how it stacks up! Hopefully it doesn't have the problems the 3 had!
I'm a Dual-Lock believer. I purchased a nice monitor without any VESA mounting options and stuck it to my Dual monitor mount with the stuff.
