    Picked up the AS-200v yesterday your video reviews played a large part in the decision. Thank you MarkHawkCam , once again you did a good job. Peace

    I bought the AZ1 on launch without any reviews to go on. It definitely is a compromised device. But I've shot with it places I wouldn't be able to use anything else. It's so discrete and perfect for public places. Especially when you don't want to be that "action cam guy".

    Great job, Mark, with another very thorough review. You do have sharp eyes, though, LOL. I have both the X1000V and the AZ1 and don't see that much difference when recording in the exact same modes. But your side by sides do indeed show the differences. Re the Steady Shot, on the mtn bike, don't really notice any diff between the AZ1 and the X1000V. But on the aircraft, huge diff. With the AZ1, I would get jello/shake under full power (OK at low power), but with the X1000V, the Steady Shot handles it much better and no jello/shake at full power. I would expect the AS200 to be the same. This would probably hold true with external motorcycle mounts and drones, as they produce vibration as well. So no question, Steady Shot 2.0 is improved under certain conditions.

    Sony definitely needs to get rid of this horrible distortion (check minute 8:41), this actually is why I did send my Sony ActionCam back. It looks so awful and unnatural if you tilt the cam up and down or pan left and right. Also there needs to be a manual field of view selection, not only combined with SteadyShot.
    SteadyShot is the next thing I don't like at all - on the first sight it looked like a good thing, but after a while the whobbling / warping edges disturbed me extremly, I really prefere the unstabilized video from GoPro.
    Also the photo-quality of the AZ1 is really bad. Reduced to screen-size it's ok, but if you have a look at the photos in full (or still half) size, they're totally unsharp and even noisy in sunlight (haven't seen full resolution files from the AS200V, so can't say anything about this camera).
    Also there needs to be a real time-lapse mode with high-quality FULL resolution photos. (The AZ1 just stores photos with 1920x1080 pixel in time-lapse mode)
    And a flat-lens case of course, didn't believe they still produced one that's absolutely useless under water. Would be nice if the lens on the cam itself would be flat as well and stay 1-2mm inside of the regular camera-chassis, so that in most cases you won't need the additional housing, but the lens is protected from most scratches nevertheless.
    I'd love to turn the cam by 90° in order to mount it more flat on the top of a helmet. The lens could be rotateable like the ones from the Drift actioncams. Mounting sideways I never got a 100% straight aligned result, it's not possible to control it precise enough on the tiny screen of the wrist remote.
    However the remote wrist-control is great, it has a long battery runtime and almost no visible delay - that's an advantage over GoPro, they still didn't get rid of the huge lag since years.

      GalaxyTraveler I've never seen wobbling/warping images from a Sony camera since they don't use warp stabilization. Are you sure you're not confusing that for UA-cam warp stabilization?

    • @oneshot3242
      @oneshot3242 9 років тому

      +GalaxyTraveler I think you are wrong about AS200V vs GoPro. I have the AS200V and the image quality is extremely nice with stabilization and i never have any of the problems you describe. Maybe it comes from UA-cam? Besides if you use steadyshot, it is a 120 degree view and the fisheye effect is less present than that on GoPro models (which use wider PoV though). However, without Steadyshot the Sony is 170 degree view, and the fisheye may be annoying when tilting up/down. So i always use Steadyshot.
      There is absolutely noway unstabilized GoPro is better than AS200V, even the Hero4 Black cannot match it, because there is no use of high 4k resolution when the image shakes, and that is what you get with GoPro, especially when Skiing. All nice GoPro ski videos are made with stabilizer that cost $200 at least and other equipments + post-production stabilizer on softwares that cost a few hundred bucks. Sony AS200V takes great stabilized videos out of the box.
      The GPS feature is just lovely, so is the wrist remote and its live view, so easy to use and works flawless.
      Here a comparison between x1000v and Hero4 black, knowing that in 1080p the AS200v is close (about same even) to x1000v quality:

      +siskiyou The problem with steadyShot is explained and visible from 10:15 on in this video you're commenting. I wonder if you even watched it? UA-cam stabilisation is not used, this is SteadyShot out of the camera, I had the AZ1 myself and recognize the exact same problem in this video even still with the AS200V.

      +OneShot The problem with steadyShot is explained and visible from 10:15 on in this video you're commenting. I wonder if you even watched it? UA-cam stabilisation is not used, this is out of the camera, I had the AZ1 myself and recognize the exact same problem in this video even still with the AS200V. Of course it's even more disruptive in full-screen than in this split-screen example... For me SteadyShot DESTROYS the footage more than it makes it better, the warping in the edges for me is really annoying and distracts me from watching the actual scenes...
      And without SteadyShot, the lens distortion is the most awful I've ever seen on actioncameras, regardless if the HDR-AZ1 or AS200V (as described check from minute 8:41 on). The video-quality in terms of sharpness or colors might be nice and even better than GoPro and other cameras (I don't know), but when there's lots of movement, panning and tilting in diferent directions all the time, like for example it's the case while skiing, the distortion is conspicuous.
      The test-videos on avsforum are useless in my opinion, since they don't show any camera-movement at all (and this is where the Sony cameras show their heavy problems). You don't use actioncams on tripods...

      +GalaxyTraveler All ski videos are more stable and enjoyable when filmed with sony steadyshot rather than gopro shakes ; it looks sharps to me at 10:15... Besides xavc format avoids artefacts we see in gopro videos.

    Awesome comparisons!! Been watching all of your Sony comparisons, and have to say you helped me choose the best camera for me; As200V.
    I did wonder if you would be able to tell me which SIZE card is best for this camera? I work in wildland fire fighting, and will likely use the camera for very long days: basically hitting record when we are doing something and running till battery is dead. Ideally, I would love to use a card that lasts as long as the battery if left recording till dead. That way, I can have multiple batteries, and change the card a the same time with each battery. Prevents me from losing all of the footage on ONE 64GB card! Am I explaining right? What do you think? Thank you! ~alan

    Hey Mark, thanks for responding to my comment on your other video. I am looking into making a UA-cam channel based around cars; auto vlogging, mods and other stuff based on cars. Would you recommend the HDR-as200v as a good starter camera for UA-cam? Thanks again!!

    • @MarkHawkCam
      @MarkHawkCam  9 років тому

      +Charlie Cannistraci It'd be one of my top recommendations especially for dealing with tricky car interiors. Thanks to the back lit sensor, darker interiors should expose really well. Steadyshot will also be really nice for dash cam or front facing perspectives.

    Hi Mark, are the mics in these action cameras (Sony, GoPro, etc) designed mainly for close range more or less 5ft? Also, when the cam is in the waterproof case the normal conversation volume is really muffled; I can barely hear at max vol on my laptop. Even when not in the case I still have the volume of my laptop turn all the way up just to hear it normal volume. Is that normal? Thanks.

    • @MarkHawkCam
      @MarkHawkCam  9 років тому

      +93bandit400 I run into this a lot with Action Cams. I end up stacking the audio in post sometimes with the duplicate set to half to a quarter it's original volume to boost the levels a bit. I recorded something out doors today at about the same distance (used the sony as backup audio) and ended up needing it. Pretty soft but my results were the same as yours

    Excellent review!!! For motorcycle rides, what action cam do you suggest over the other? HDR-AS200V or HDR-AZ1 HD? Looks like the AS200V may be the winner in overall clarity and details?

    • @MarkHawkCam
      @MarkHawkCam  9 років тому

      +GR8WHITEC5 AZ1 has a nice form factor but if you have the money the size difference doesn't matter, then the AS200V offers a lot of marginal improvements over the AZ1.

    • @MarkHawkCam

      Splash proof. They are waterproof to a degree but I wouldn't feel comfy fully submersing them. Don't think the AZ1 has a mic port or a flat lens Dive case.

    Hey Guys, i am trying to decide between these two. I like the portability of AZ1, but i want to use GPS overlay and i can only get that with the live view remote (az1 has no built in gps). Would you recommend az1 + live remote or as200? I hate having to charge and carry 2 separate devices.

    • @MarkHawkCam
      @MarkHawkCam  9 років тому

      Gustavo Bessone I'd personally go with the AS200V. Really good upgrade and comes to be about the same price with some added performance over the AZ1. AZ1 is sweet for it's form factor and there is a chance an AZ2 could come out sometime in Sept. AZ1 was launched in Sept. 2014.

    Hey Mark, I recently got me the Sony AS200V and its a bitch to upload a 1080p 60fps clip to UA-cam. What's the easiest & fastest way to upload a 1080p 60fps clip to UA-cam like the one I mentioned? The clips I'm testing out are in a range of 10 minutes to a half hour. Thanks man

    • @MarkHawkCam
      @MarkHawkCam  9 років тому

      GQMofo Is it size issues? Are you exporting through Sony Action Cam software or something else?

    • @GQMofo
      @GQMofo 9 років тому

      MarkHawkCam I've transferred the clips to my desktop and simply uploading them directly onto UA-cam. I'm not using Sony's software at all. It could possibly be size since its 1080p 60fps and it takes time to upload & process. But I wanted to ask for your expert opinions anyway man.

    • @MarkHawkCam
      @MarkHawkCam  9 років тому

    • @MarkHawkCam
      @MarkHawkCam  9 років тому

      +py2o3434 I'd probably go with the AS200V unless you needed that AZ1 form factor. As200V Has better image quality and some added features. Features like improved UI, easier GPS, mic input, etc. I'd pick up the AZ1 more as a companion camera for my arsenal of cameras. It's a great camera on it's own though and can't top it's size to quality ratio.

  • @MarkHawkCam
    @MarkHawkCam  9 років тому

    @Cameron Dorr can't respond to you directly because of your privacy settings. I don't have any AS200 underwater but I do have the AS100. It'd be similar in quality however much sharper then the AS100. ua-cam.com/video/M2zRz-QHGGc/v-deo.htmlm37s

      AZ1 é bastante suave, mas não muito longe do nível AS100 de qualidade. Eu vejo isso como mais como um companheiro barato para sua câmera ação principal . Ele também é muito bom se você só precisa de uma câmera com um pequeno perfil de tamanho .
