Well, I was a junior in high school when 1984 came out and we all knew he was a genius! Every time Van Halen came to St. Louis we’d go see them and Eddie’s solo would transfix us where we’d feel like we were in another dimension! Truly amazing!!
I am also a guitarist. I am not a huge EVH fan but ill say he was just a freak, a natural.. he was light years ahead of anyone and everyone in 1977 when this was put out. think of that 1977!!! this means he was playing like this years before his solo was even recorded. Even today people are still figuring out things he did. there has never been anyone like him and never will be. Think Vinnie Colaiuta on steroids. you gotta be a guitarist to really appreciate what EVH was doing.
But his level of play when he recorded eruption and if you saw any live footage of him in 1977 was playing at this level. He was galaxies ahead of everyone in 1977..which means he was probably playing at this level in 1974 and 1975...he didn't get this good overnight. He was a classically trained pianist who couldn't read music and played by ear. Winning piano competitions by ear! As a child. He was one of the most gifted musicians to ever live on any instrument.
Eddie was an inventor as much as he was a player. He reinvented the guitar with industry standard changes also changed the way music was written. Playing and his innovation made everyone better off in the end.
Without a doubt. On any instrument too. See my reply to his childhood days winning classical piano competitions all he ear. Couldn't read music. 3 years in a row won 1st place. He transfered that talent and ability to guitar. No other player ever like him.
I could tell in the beginning of the video you just were not into it, and then I saw the expression on your face change and I could tell you started to enjoy it 😊👍🏻
I cry every time I hear this! Love you Eddie Van halen 🎸👑
I wish Ed was as appreciated as much back when he was doing it. A same that people don't see genius until after death.

Please be aware that this solo is from the 1986 tour for the '5150' alubm, not the 1977 debut...

And yet you say you are not a huge fan. You described what being a huge fan entails haha...

Van Halen’s first album was released in Feb 1978, not 1977. And has been said, this live performance is from 1986.
Can someone tell me why Everytime I hear eruption tears come to my eyes. I'm a grown ass man and I still weep Everytime .😂
He is in the top 5 musicians that has ever lived. You won't see his like in a long while,

If you like drums, check out his brother’s drum solo from the same show.
Oh thank you, I’ll do that

That's a great solo, still prefer drums, but then if we all liked the same things life would be very boring!
There is a great drum solo by Eddie's brother Alex Van Hale out there on youtube.
