- I tested 9 pour-in fuel injector cleaners and here are the results. After months of pouring in the fuel injector cleaners, I have concluded the challenge and I will show the winner.
I used and tested Lucus, Gumout, Seafoam, B-12 Kemtool, Rislone, Dura Lube, Chevron Tech, and Gumout Regaine Complete. You will be surprised at who the winner is.

Honestly you are correct about using the cleaner first. The best method is to do the least aggressive or intrusive method that will work. Youll save money and help to identify issues. Plus if your wrong, it always good to clean fuel systems up a bit. Thanks for a great video!

@@user-cj4hk8lr1v its been a while since that comment, but i believe i meant to try the easiest method first, which is kne of these fuel system cleaners. If it doesn't help, then you need to look deeper into the problem.
If theres a cheap and easy way to a possible solution, its usually best to try that first before you try more aggressive/invasive/expensive options.
@@bobcatwelder00 Octane boosters won't burn holes in anything, but what they can do is damage the catalyst and o2 sensors over time due to the MMT that most contain, which is why many aren't street legal. My car's owners manual specifically says to not use gasoline or additives containing MMT. Also, octane boosters are virtually useless because they do so little (most raise the octane by less than one number). The "good" ones like Royal Purple Max Boost claim "up to" a 3 number increase, but putting that $15 or so towards just buying higher octane gas would get you much more of an octane increase per dollar and without potentially damaging additives.

@@dfls5069 I use Acetone. Been doing it for years. Every now and again I add an ounce to my tank. I use a shot glass, but a small cup like the one that comes with Pepto Bismal works just as well. I've been told by "experts" that it's bad on o-rings, but I've got 256,000 on my jeep, and 75k on my Harley. No issues.

Honestly, it's a damn shame how much the the prices have increased in the last 2 years. That's usually something you'd see in a 15-year difference, not 2 years.
Great presentation , I’ve never had a lot of faith in “ additives” but it’s also true that they’ve come a long way and are much better now .
Especially, if you have direct injection you need to use a cleaner... I have the older multi-port injection. So you need one for what type of injection you have.
Just came across this video, only 2 years late. Thanks for the honest review. One additional tip, instead of looking at the bottles’ ounces note the number of fuel gallons that the manufacturers recommend treating. A bigger bottle doesn’t always mean more gallons treated or a deeper clean. Glad we could get your check engine light off and your Caddy running better.
What's the difference between the Gumout 2x Fuel injector cleaner and the Gumout Fuel injector Carb cleaner? The carb cleaner + injector cleaner all in one is cheaper than just the fuel injector cleaner alone? Never understood that lol

B-12 and Lucas for me. The B-12 for cleaning and the Lucas for lubrication.
I pour a couple ounces of one or the other in a tank full. No need to use the whole bottle at one time.
Also, don't forget to keep some Fuel Saver around incase you don't drive your vehicle very often. That ethanol really screws with fuel systems when sitting still for months. Works like a cork in the fuel system.

My car was slow not responding as fast as it had when it was new. Ran a bottle of royal purple max clean through it and about halfway through the tank it was basically back to normal. If it works it works. Saved me from buying all new fuel injectors.

I put in MMO in my gas tank every November for my winter car. I have no issues. And of course, I change my oil every year despite the mileage pennzoil 5/30 synthetic in both winter '03 Saturn Ion and my summer '98 Honda Civic.
Got both for free and do regular maintenance.

My wife works for USPS and uses her own vehicle to deliver mail so I am constantly dealing with car issues. I have found these fuel additives to help a lot. When it comes to fuel system cleaners, there are a few extra things to consider. With the introduction of ethanol in fuel, there is a higher chance of water build up. Ethanol can also clog up injectors and cat. converters. The EPA also makes car manufactures vent the valve cover (oil and oil fumes) directly into the air path just before the throttle body. Doing regular maintenance like replacing the air filter, cleaning the throttle body, and cleaning the Mass Air flow sensor have become more essential. Using these fuel cleaners occasionally also helps clean out some of the gunk that builds up. When that gunk builds up in things like fuel injectors, the fuel injector starts to wear out faster. Doing regular maintenance, as stated above, along with adding one of these additives to the fuel system will help prevent maintenance cost over time especially if you do it before there is an issue. Some additives like Seafoam can be added to the oil system as well. Just make sure to follow instructions and local laws. I never heard of Rislone, but I will be checking it out now.

My Mercedes-Benz C230, 1998 is a high mileage (256,000 miles) car that I've known since it was new. The naturally aspirated 4 cylinder was having problems with rough idle after cold starts. I changed the spark plugs but that seemed to make it worse. I tried the Seafoam fuel additive, Seafoam valve cleaner, Royal Purple fuel additive, and Gumout fuel additive, at least two or three cans (one per fill up on an empty tank) and still had problems with cold starting and idling.
Needing a fill up, and looking for a can or Royal Purple, all that the parts store stocked was Chevron High Mile fuel additive. I filled up the sixteen gallon tank with premium, poured in the Chevron additive, and then drove thirty miles. There were two additional freeway trips. Then, some cold weather hit us, I was shocked the next morning when the car started right up and idled smoothly. Leaving, it accelerated without hesitation, and warmed up, it was buttery smooth. Side note: I have always used only the best synthetic fluids/oils and the car burns no oil whatsoever.
I use them mainly for maintenance more than anything, given long enough all vehicles will build deposits. PEA based cleaners tend to do very well in the combustion chamber as the addictive isn't instantly burnt up due to the heat (and lab tests show this) very effective for this type of cleaning. I really do like Berrymans B12 Chem-tool though for injectors/carbs, it's more aggressive than PEA but it can't take the heat inside the chamber so it does extremely little there.
B12 Chem-tool is kinda my generic catch all for most things, I've kinda learned it does a really good job with carburetors, especially lawn mowers, which granted are not hard to take apart but if I can put 2 ounces in my gas tank every summer it really seems to help prevent ethanol (only option here) from clogging the jets on the carb. It also does seem to help with the floaters inside a gas tank if they are stuck, might not get it the first time, but you run 2-3 tanks it will improve significantly.
Anything combustion related though is default PEA based for me, about all else is B12 Chem-Tool, it's not a mechanic in a bottle, those products don't exist but they can help prevent build up, and some work particularly well in winter to help mix some of that water with the fuel (if it's not a large amount) to get it out of the fuel tank. I use them mostly for maintenance though and as I said B12 works very well with mowers if the jets are not fully clogged yet, otherwise you need to take it apart but it helps prevent build up after (with yearly use).
Some vehicles just are not worth the repair anyways, not all issues are obvious either, I don't believe mechanics in a bottle exist but at the same time I don't feel these products are intended for those types of jobs (or claimed as such), you take apart a carb and you spray it down with carb cleaner, you clean the jets, and you put it back together, these chemicals can do that from the fuel tank, minor issues can exist on a car and simply not be serious enough to pay for a repair but these can be a good option if the issue isn't severe.
With B12 cleaner you want it run through the tank as quickly as possible!
I.e. before a long drive on the highway to empty the fuel tank. It deteriorates plastics etc.
Imagine that eating through your fuel tank lever float.
I'm a Firm Believer in Berrymans too. It Cleared my O2 Sensors Dash lights ( on my Exhaust) Carbon build up on my Downstream O2 Sensor on the Catalytic converter. I use it on Back to Back Fill ups, every 6 Months.

Great video. I used the Gumout High Milage treatment on my 4.6L V8 (after a chipmunk damaged the wiring and caused a misfired cylinder) just to get rid of any unburned carbon deposits. Used it after the coil and spark plug was replaced and the car runs fine.
Many moons ago (1987) an old retired Cajun auto mechanic told me about the elixir of life for my sick 1979 Mustang. It was Marvel Mystery oil. I got a can and he watched me pour 1/2 of the can (16 ozs.)in the gas tank. While it was just idling and we were talking with my hood up he pointed at my engine. It was running smooth and getting smoother by the minute. I was amazed !!! Been using it every since. 😁

Thank you for posting this video. I am a DIY guy because I hate to pay 150 bucks an hour for someone else's time when I could just save that money by doing it myself. Anyway, my vehicle had been running rough, shaking, I had a check engine light, misfire on cylinder 1. I suspected that it may have been the coil pack, but before taking the thing all apart I decided to dump some injector cleaner in because I remembered having watched this video... When I ran the injector cleaner the vehicle ran a little better, and it actually shut the check engine light off. She still wasn't running 100%, but improved enough to turn the light off. But, then I knew that it wasnt the coil pack causing the problem, it was the injector. It bought me enough time to get a new injector ordered, I replaced the injector and now she runs like new.
I really don't understand and know how to use those products, it's very confusing because there are so many products doing the same thing. AFTER watching your video I think I know how to use it now. Greatly appreciated your kindness 🙏

I use Lucas in all my small gas engines, diesel engines, and diesel heater.
Every once in awhile I’ll run a bottle in my car, it definitely runs better when on the sauce.

I poured in the Rislone Hy-per Fuel Complete Fuel System Cleaner in my 2004 Mazda 6 S and the engine performs much better than the other competing brands. Great bargain price seeing two different color chemicals in just one bottle.

Used the Gumout with PEA but did not notice much difference. Royal Purple's injector cleaner showed a noticeable improvement with increased mileage and engine performance.

Good presentation and practical. I've used both Seafoam and Berryman's B-12. Since I generally have codes that indicate where the problems could be, I have yet to have any pour-in cleaner totally fix the problem. That being said, and always more expensive to replace parts, I am getting ready to start using the Rislone fuel system cleaners and hope for the best. Thanks!!

I use the gumout all in one fuel system cleaner about every 7500 miles. I have no idea if it helps or not but it does not hurt anything. What did smooth out everything was cleaning the electronic throttle body as there was a lot of gunk on the throttle plate. There is a plain improvement in smoothness and has lessened to a great degree any hesitation.

Lucas tune up in a bottle for me, used it for years, add it once every three months, in my Mini Cooper S together with running it on higher octane fuel, BP or Shell V power, had no issues, preformance is good, runs beautifully, instant throttle response, clean emissions and great MPG

I had a 93 Grand Prix GTP. I used two bottles of Techron in my tank which then proceeded to clog the fuel filter lol. After I changed it I bought a bottle of Gumout high mileage and kept and eye on the fuel economy which after a while started to increase. By the time I was done with that tank I was getting 26mph on the highway after continued use of Gumout my fuel economy eventually got to 28 mpg. That's with a car that had 248k miles!
I used to do the cleaning through the break booster drip feed. We used C foam, customer had to purchase first, then we started using Valvoline when corporate directed us. C foam was #1 in my experience cleaned the crap out the engine and you could see it 😂, clouds of smoke. The only thing is C foam doesn't have all the other additives, it just straight cleans everything so it might mess with some sensors depending on the vehicle. I recommend C foam drip feed through the break booster then a lubricant additive after through the gas tank. Hope this helps
I soaked the injectors off my father's 92' Oldsmobile that was running rough in Chevron's Tech-Ron cleaner. I was amazed how much brown gunk came out of them. The car runs perfectly now.

Anytime I remove a carb on a small engine, I soak it (and the associated internal parts) in the berryman chemdip. It works!
One thing to remember with a lot of these products is that they will provide a power increase while they're in the gas - which can make you think they must be working, or it must be the fuel system, but you really need a fresh clean tank ran through under the same driving conditions as before the cleaner to determine if anything has truly changed (or an OBD tool that can check things like fuel trim)
For large displacement engines, you likely won't see much change unless you had some serious blockage in your injectors or a lot of soft carbon buildup on valves. Usually this requires more intensive cleaning than just fuel treatment, but it's still good as a preventative measure, preferably before oil changes.
For small, efficient engines, high efficiency is so touchy and vulnerable that even with a little cleaning, getting a better spray pattern, air/fuel dispersion from cleaner valves, better spark, etc, will actually give you a noticeable 1-5 mpg boost if there was just mild debris.
In any case these cleaners are worth running prior to an oil change along with a few italian tune-ups near the end of the tank, or like you said, as a diagnostic tool to see how light cleaning may have influenced things. There are stories of them solving significant issues as well so it's worth it.

You stated you did your cleaning on a road trip. I've always thought this was the best way to use these, especially in a mountain drive. High throttle, possible down a gear so RPMs are up, high fuel flow. Whenever I go on a road trip, it always starts with a bottle of something in the tank. My personal preference is Liquimoly, Redline or Gumout Regain in that order.
So many people "test" these by using a borescope. I don't think a little carbon is an issue, dirty injectors are. Sadly it's hard to find anybody who shows injector spray patterns before and after

I use Mmo every tank full,it does what it's supposed to and it's very economical,I also use it in all my small engines.
Very interesting and sensible approach which can give results for engine rough idle and dirty injectors. I found STP FUEL SYSTEM CLEANER did the job for me.

I bought some hyper-fuel rislone to try today. But I found in past if i want a quick noticable change in how my truck performs (2013 Hemi), I use Lucas fuel system cleaner and I use it at 3x the recommended dose. By 3/4 tank the truck is noticably smoother, more power. Then I add recommended dose of marvelous mystery oil to lubricate the fuel system. I do this every 6 months. Now my Kia 2.0T manual even says to run fuel system cleaner. Only vehicle I notice a huge difference in is my hemi Ram truck. I used to think Lucas was garbage until I ran it at 3x the dose on bottle. I have tried every type you listed, I did notice a change in vehicle when using the gumout complete also. I tried many other brands also. I had 7 vehicles and now 4, the gdi engines I notice less change after running a cleaner, but in v8 engines like 5.7 hemi, ls3/l99 Chevrolet engines the cleaners can make noticable change.

I had a p0420 code on a Dodge Ram 1500 4.7L, and a mechanic at the dealer told me to run some cleaner through it after he checked all the sensors. I used some gumout all in 1, and the improvement was immediate. The check engine light went out after burning through half of the treated 25 gallons. I wish I had known that before consulting the mechanic. Good video.
I have the same truck 07 Dodge Ram 1500 4.7 … super loud fan noise when accelerating, slow lagging acceleration, SUPER crappy fuel mileage and it’s starting to die at lights or stops suddenly, also Chuggs when I’m trying to accelerate at times I’m getting ready to trash the damn thing
@@israelortiz3603 You may have some bad coils. I have over 200,000 miles, but have never had the fan issue. Mine goes through water pumps though, so the fan has had lots of attention over the years.
Great video Brother, I have had some good results over the years with two products I use on new and used cars and trucks, it the sea foam, and Lucas. Both work well for me. Use them on every oil change and in between service, also use the sea foam in the fuel on my John Deere tractor. I noticed the engine run smoother and faster start up.

My snowblower was surging pretty badly and I ran the some lucas through it I had bought for my diesel truck... no more surging it most definitely worked, it would only run on partial choke prior to the treatment

I've had great results with Lucas, too. I've been using it in my Elantra since 2011 and the car still runs like new, even with 122,000 miles on the odometer.
I prefer Lucas fuel system cleaners and also like using their upper cylinder lubricant for my cars their fuel system cleaner has a high amount of PEA which is good stuff

@@dfls5069 that's a fair question, personally I am under the impression that Redline has the highest PEA levels.
I bought a F-350 that was being retired from national parks service, and with 175,000 miles it was tired but well taken care of. I did the suspension on it and upgraded the terrible factory lights and everything else was in good order. Well after putting some miles on it and noticing how down on power it was under load I grew worried of major engine issues. I had already checked the spark plugs, coil packs, air filter for clogs and all the basic checks and it was in fine order on every account. I paid for used oil testing, I double checked everything, got it scanned and had no codes, poured through forums for similar issues and what their fixes were. I was at a loss and figured it had to be those 3v 5.4 cam phases as I have owned a 2v 5.4 and was very familiar with how they ran and how to take care of them for long life. Before I hit order on new injectors and the dreaded cam phaser job I decided to use gum out as a last ditch hope to make a 750 mile work trip and deal with the engine later. To my shock it gained a LOT of power back very quickly and while carrying a load no less so on the trip down I dumped a bottle in every fill up and since then I have no complaints with the truck. It has its power back to do what I need it to, and it’s getting better mpg empty, about 17-18 on the highway empty with 4.30 gears, and around 9 mpg at the lowest when I’m in 4wd snowplowing with 3,500 lbs of sand salt in the back. Now it’s up to 190,000 miles and I haven’t noticed any loss of the power I got back, and I plan on cleaning out the injectors when I change the plugs and coils around 200k and based on everything else I had done and looked at I’m sure I’ll be happy with this truck for the next 50,000 miles if not more.
I appreciate the story you shared with us. The poor in treatments are amazing. I've had so much positive results that came from those I couldn't wait to make the video. I swear by those and I will always use them first before I try any other major fix. Enjoy your truck and thanks for sharing.

As a maintenance item I think that a fuel system cleaner isn’t a bad thing at all. I’ll use it (Royal Purple mostly) every oil change, and it seems to keep my vehicle fuel systems in good shape.
I'm on the hence about liqui moly and royal purple fuel system cleaner. Both good brands
At 70 got my first ASE certification in 74. An old Mech that worked with me at the dealership I worked at educated me on that very thing. Using ATF in your gas periodically cleaned everything from the Carb to the valves. It burns at a higher tempt than gas. To date I have never had an issue with injectors using ATF. Even the old ATF after changing it in the Transmission is recycled for this use. Like one said, if it works who am I to argue.

@@hon702aa I use 16 oz. each fill up be it 8-18 gal. I only use it occasionally like once every 4-6 weeks. GM use to sell something similar years ago like in the 80's that was poured into the carb slowly. Smoked like a freight train but after it burned off you could tell a difference in the performance. Hesitation and sluggish acceleration went away. cheers....
@@hon702aa cars Evap systems were way different in the 70s hence why you don’t have to smog 90% plus o2 sensors didn’t come out till the 80s and have been approved a lot more and are very sensitive yes you will clean ur fuel injectors but slowly clog ur cat and short your o2 sensors while you’re at it not a smart idea on modern cars will not last as long
@@chancesmall7026 I used it in a 2001 Chrysler 300 for 13 years and the 200 i have now for 8 years and to date no issues with injectors, o2 sensors or cats.

Great video. Although not scientific, it is nice to hear some real world experiences. I like to use a fuel additive at the time of every oil change. It is an inexpensive addition to routine maintenance. So far I am liking Liqui Moly.
I think it is a good practice to put it in at every oil change. Preventive maintenance is always the cheapest and most effective.
cool thing about the seafoam, you can add 1 oz per quart of oil (crankcase) and clean your lifters. Love your truthful enthusiasm!

Thanks for this insightful video. I was just told that I needed to possibly have an injector replaced on my 1999 Volvo S70. The cost is more than i can afford right now, so I've been looking at videos here on UA-cam and I found yours the most helpful! So I am going to try a couple of these and see if it helps. I have used the Gumout Professional Fuel system cleaner and it worked better than the consumer grade

I use 4-8 ounces of MMO (Marvel Mystery Oil..) in ever tank fill.. Every several months I will use PEA in the gas (Chevron Techron) Always use a good gasoline detergent for fuel fill IE Shell, Chevron..
I use the cheapest cleaner on sale that I can find, works amazingly well.
I've been doing it since I got my license ,worked very well since.
My dad bought an old merc A class for my sister and was smoking at start, used fuel system cleaner and stopped smoking.

But don't confuse cheap vs low price.

My 2015 Subaru Outback 3.6 doesn't have any issues, but it does have 72k miles on it.
I added the Rislone, as preventative maintenance.
I'm going to get some throttle body cleaner, and tackle that next.
