I adore that Barret has clearly been paying attention and realized Cloud's obsession with the black materia is the best way to de-escalate the situation with the turks. In general a wonderful scene for the party dynamic and relationships :D
24:40 Here’s hoping Dan looks through his inventory before the game is over and realizes the Cetran Armlet (and eventually Bracer) are not the same as the Armband and Bangle, and have 8 materia slots, not zero.
They probably ought to have given these armors more different names.
You are right in your assessment of the Armband and Bangle, though, their defense is not nearly high enough to justify giving up 7 or 8 materia slots. I genuinely don’t think there is ever a reason to use them. They’re even worse than their counterparts in Remake, which both had defenses that were much higher and you were only giving up 4 materia slots for them
Team Fix-It Aerith and Team Wreck-It Cloud
i love how the gang seems to be worried for and also lowkey scared of cloud
"You are no fun at all today."
OH REALLY? IS THAT THE VIBE HE'S GIVING YOU?
love the sugarcoating everyone uses for cloud
I really love how Clouds has been acting at this point in the game. He's been acting off for a while now, but it's gotten to the point where he feels like a different character.
Seems like Sephiroth got tired of all of Cloud’s sidequests and card games
@pokechatter "You know what, I was going to let this play out, but he just spent 5 hours racing Chocobo's. I gotta turn up the obsession."
@@migicalmerwee9018That's real time though. In game time is likely months.
Late, but: There's a 90% chance, even under the, ridiculous, single categorization framework The Game Awards uses that Cody Christian gets nominated this year, even if I doubt he wins. If there can be only one, it's Kaiji Tang as Ichiban. Under the 6 category system I would prefer they had always used? That being Actor and Actress in a Sole/Primary Playable Character Role, Actor and Actress in a Secondary Playable Character Role and Actor and Actress in an NPC Role? This would be Cody Christian's second nomination.
On a lighter note, 3:48 shows us Reno has probably the only useful thing to steal in the game, a Fortitude Ring!
I think we can all agree being petrified would be traumatic enough, unless you struck a pose that would prevent cracks and losing bits hoping to be cured or going the other way entirely and pose heroically knowing it would be forever, but do you suppose being petrified even a little is a teensie bit more harrowing for Red considering Seto and all that jarringly overturned lifetime of misplaced resentment being so fresh in his mind?
freaking love it that elena's gun is PINK
My favorite detail is the butterfly charm dangling off the grip
@@XTheUnchosenOneX pure perfection
11:00 I love that this is the voice line we got for Cloud's LB here. It might be nothing personal for Cloud but it's sooooo very personal for Reno at this point and I enjoy Cloud inadvertently adding insult to injury by highlighting that disparity here.
Aww man, I wanted to see Rude and Reno as frogs!
Can they get frogged? And, if so, does anyone know if they have unique models?
I'm pretty sure they can't. The frog cloud that got Tifa had Rude right in the same AoE, so he should have been frogified if it could affect him. Though i would love to see fan version of the various Turks being frogged.
The best part of The Temple of the Ancients is that Cloud has been earning the trust of everyone in the party the entire journey. All that trust and care that Cloud has earned and cultivated, accented by the fact that the player is working to build these relationships too, is now being put to the test when he’s not acting himself. You feel the care and worry by everyone in the party and that is so well done.
32:57 oh neat! You never actually fight Tseng in the OG, so this is a whole new thing!
I'm excited to see more Vincent interacting with the Turks

I like this showing of the gradual loss of control on cloud instead of it just being jumped on you at the end. I remember as a teen being very confused as to why suddenly cloud seemed to be fighting against himself trying to kill Aerith.
My boyssss Reno and Rude ❤❤❤ Also, I love how much personality they give Elena in this. In the OG, she had next to nothing.
I love what we're seeing with cloud here. All of his growth up until this point just kind of evaporating, so far gone in the search of "his" goal that not even Tifa can snap him out of it anymore.
Lets not pretend that isnt just a thing in video games in general.
Here though, I think what they are trying to illustrate with Tifa is that she is seeing the shift in Clouds demeanor that he isnt acting like himself (and/or "himself") and has a cruel and distant presence. Aerith calling out seems normal, but it looked like Tifa stepped in more out of concern for Cloud's mental state. Not because he would hurt or kill someone, but because of how he was doing it.
It certainly doesnt help the dissonance that Barret has a gun that he points and uses very frequently. Everyone else could plausibly be doing non-lethal damage. For example the previous scene where this happened - you saw Cloud start going for blood and trying to cut and slash, rather than, presumably, aiming for armor to try and stagger and knock them out.
I'm glad they were able to include Reno without it feeling weird.
2:35 This this is a good interaction.
4:50 Game, that wasn't "defeating" EM mines. That was triggering EM mines.
7:51 So they just get to focus down one party member. Real cool game. Reeeeaal cooool.
8:00 Oh, so they stunlock one and anyone who gets caught in the crossfire goes down, too? What "fun".
12:55 I'm surprised this doesn't happen more often.
13:14 In one piece, yes. "Okay"... more debatable.
13:38 As weird as this is to have happen, I like that it point-blank tells you how long this takes and how massive this place must be.
22:34 Man I love/hate those kinds of effects. I can never get them to pay off on purpose.
23:44 Aerith just casually dropping a magic tactical nuke. That or the most OTT bug bomb in history.
26:07 I can't speak to animations taking too long (I'd have to be playing), but I can say that there's way, waaay too many of the "hold button" for something that could be a press. Like the praying.
30:12 It's looking a lot more peaceful, yea.
32:48 I wonder how often they get issued new uniforms. Between the combat tears and slides, it's gotta be often to look so crisp.
35:43 Are they gonna do the stunlock focus like Rude and Reno?
40:47 Well, Cloud's definitely having issues.
41:05 And you know it's bad because a Tifa hug didn't fix it.
I did not expect the Turks to become some of my favourite characters in this remake series, and yet here we are
Bonus episode idea: go on all the different Gold Saucer dates?
Ooooh boy, Cloud is not ok.
Yeah, even just from watching, I can see a couple of design issues with Aerith's Pray ability to harvest Lifestream:
- as Dan called out, the animation runs long for a routine utility action.
- the collection radius is way too small. If they're not going to auto-collect at the end of a fight, they should at least make it so you can harvest all the lifestream dropped with one action...
39:55 This seems like the perfect time to remind, or inform, everyone that Elena is 18 years old, a fact I believe was only first revealed in the recent Rebirth Ultimania
When I saw you say that, I thought it was going to be a genuinely sleazy moment, not just "she has a gun."
@@Volvagia1927I wouldn’t say it’s just “she has a gun”
25:12 For me, this was the rope-climbing animation in Gongaga. There are a handful of long ascents that just take absolutely forever, and it annoys me every single time.
Definitely getting Vincent DLC vibes in the Temple of the Ancients from this bit
So I guess we'll see the other half to two-thirds of this dungeon next week then
Rebirth and original comparison by Playframe episode numbers:
Start to end - episode 22
So in general video game worlds are not really to scale with stuff in the real world, be that physical distance or time-wise, so I don't have a problem with say, 30 minutes of gameplay representing like, an hour and change or so. But several hours? Twice? Are you trying to tell me the gang has been going for 6+ hours in this temple? No wonder Vince came in after them.
Yeah, I thought the same! At least 4 to 6 hours, could also be way longer. They should be exhausted by this point. This seems just a bit weird.
2:37 on the surface, this line is fine and funny besides. However… in the original, Reno is complimenting his partner Rude on his skills, not commenting about the crush as in the localization. And it bothers me both because it downplays Rude and Reno’s relationship but also because, that’s one of the last few lines Reno’s JP VA had recorded, and it feels disrespectful to just change the meaning like that. :<
Edit: fixing an autocorrect fail
Unless I completely missed it, I don't think Rebirth has introduced the detail that Elena has a crush on Tseng. Maybe that eavesdropped exchange we hear before the fight and her protectiveness of him afterward are meant to imply it subtly.
I'm sure it's been hinted at before. Have a vague recollection of her alluding to it in the bar in Junon, but maybe Dan didn't stick around for that
I think it's an odd choice to hop back and forth with time skips, instead of just switch control to each party and run the temple in tandem. I think it might work better in the end, but it still feels weird to me.
Especially how long they were separated? By the text on screen it seems like they have been apart for at least 4 to 6 hours, which feels too long.
I know we're nearing the end of the game at this point, but if you're still wanting to take some tips for your fighting style: slow down a bit! Use the ATB pauses to strategize a bit, especially right when you trigger a stagger. You often end up with multiple characters with full ATB gauges running around or not using Limit Breaks right when you stagger opponents. You don't often issue commands to other members other than your active one, which would help a lot with making fights more manageable. I'm not sure if your current style is a result of wanting to keep things moving for the presentation, but it often ends up looking very chaotic. Anyway, just some general tips, feel free to ignore :)
Did the Turks also mention why Constantinople got the works?
That's nobody's business but theirs
Wait, you have items to cure petrified people and you didn't use it on Nanaki's father?
Hang on, I just had a random fleeting thought about how petrification is like cryo freeze and I have to write a DnD-campaign where everyone thought the BBEG was dead, but only waiting a few thousand years for when his story was legend and people stopped hunting him.
Does anyone know if, during that fight where Rude & Reno join the party, they can get turned into frogs and, if so, whether they have unique frog models?
Also: I wonder if Dan will notice 'unable to obtain [resource]' before the game ends?
As for the also, I dunno, but in Dan's defense, the message is very similar and the sound effect is the same. They really should've done more to make that inability clear.
I can see the "unable to obtain resource" message fine, but it's difficult (if not impossible) to tell which resource is in front of you until you've picked it up, so seems like you may as well spam the pickup button in case it's something you aren't capped on.
@@PlayFramePlus Fair. I couldn't tell if you'd even noticed that you were capped on resources (recording perception debuff and whatnot)
It's honestly really annoying how the story suddenly decides "killing bad guys is bad." All the other enemies Cloud slaughtered were acceptable, but now he's doing a creepy voice in a cutscene so that makes it morally reprehensible!
Agreed, specially considering these people are directly responsible for killing thousands of people. They're basically the SS but the game assumes we have sympathy for them.
Because they're not a threat. If you have enemy soldiers effectively in your custody or out of commission, then you are not allowed to execute without it being a war crime. He's not killing these people in the heat of the fight to end their threat to his life and objectives, but trying to execute someone after they're no longer able to put up a fight. Also, this game was made by a Japanese studio, that rule I just told you isn't just a Geneva Conventions thing to them, but a way Samurai would act if they were actually keeping Bushido fully. In Bushido, you do not fight someone who is incapable of defending themselves much less execute them. Samurai who were attempting to assassinate someone who they wrested from bed, would actually wake the person and give them a blade before killing them to avoid breaking their code. So this isn't just a we're using war crimes as a way to show he's out of control because we hope people recognize you're supposed to take those enemy combatants who are defenseless captive, but because it's a thing in their culture that only the ruthless and villains who do not care about rules and fairness that kill people once they are clearly not in position to fight anymore.
Nah, see bad guys just get knocked out. Theres a line in remake after Johnny gets saved about needing to get out of there before the guards wake up. That's why phoenix downs work. There's one other time that Cloud gets unhinged and actually kills a person and Tifa is clearly disturbed.
@jennifersteward1007 actually, if you see green particles coming off of them and their bodies disappear, then they're dead and are returning to the lifestream. Those guys who were interrogating Johnny in Remake didn't disappear. All of the Shinra soldiers in game in Rebirth I'm pretty sure have been getting the glowey green particles and disappearing treatment. The party has a lot of blood on their hands.
@@timothystamm3200please do not invoke Bushido to explain why present day Japanese devs do things a certain way, unless you've actually got quotes from them saying so, that's a whole load of bunk
Also samurai were the worst! The whole code of honour thing, much as with knights in Europe was dressing things up after the fact
