Midgar: Steampunk Dystopia
Aerith’s House: 5-star Animal Crossing Island
Animal Crossing causes great suffering for me, mainly because my sisters have a very abnormal addiction for it and I can’t play anything on my Switch with the two of them hogging it all to themselves...
Ausar The Vile I getcha. My 5-year old watched Dan and Carrie’s first vid and I had to buy it afterwards. I spend a lot of time at night fishing nowadays.
I got more of a Studio Ghibli feel from her house, honestly.
"They have a F****ing WATERFALL!"
WildFyreful I can see that too, but the moment they let you pick flowers, I went straight to Animal Crossing.
Cloud’s almost-embarrassment with the kids thinking him cool - completely because he’s actually skilled and not at all because of his cool-guy persona - is excellent and I love it.
I like how Cloud saying that Aerith's house is amazing has so much more weight, even said as casually as it would be for other characters, it has so much more meaning because you know it broke through his cool act.
Cloud: best at switches, worst at doors
"And when you're done, you'll be drowning in job offers."
Boy Cloud sure is getting paid in "exposure" a lot.
Yeah, he barely gets any real income out of the merc work he's actually done. Which would be terrible if he actually needed money, but there's no indication that he does. Guy sleeps on benches, doesn't need the bathroom, and isn't allowed to eat pizza.
If only he got paid in actual money maybe he could finally have his pizza
Dan apparently refusing to notice Oates following him all over town was the funniest thing I've seen yet.
So he didn't make note of it but some of the incidental dialogue from the kids mentions that Biggs used to work at the Leaf House. That's his backstory handled.
One of the sidequests there also reveals that he might be dating one of the Leaf House caretakers, so he could still be dropping by...
Or at least could have before... y'know. The Plate. XD
39:54 The first person to think Cloud is cool, and he doesn't know how to handle the fame.
20:35 He used Cura!
Yes. You did miss it, but the "Close door" power was in one of those Materia that you missed. You also missed "Climb over stack of boxes", "casual conversation", and "Open up about my feelingsa"
Those are truly rare.
Time for gameplay tip of the day: Pray is probably the best materia in the game! Not only does it heal your entire party without having to dedicate a Magnify materia to being linked with a Cure materia, it also heals for a lot, AND doesn't cost MP! So if you run out of ethers or something, you will still have prayers to heal you. Always have it equipped on someone in your party!
Turns a party nearly invincible with Refocus :O
Later in the game you have easily enough materia slots, to fit in a magnify cure and would rather use your atb bar on damage and other skills (and in boss fights you don't really need a magnify on any offensive spell). However on hard pray is essential.
@@SamiSalamiGER But later on in normal mode, Magnifying Barrier or Haste is a bit more useful than Magnifying Cure. Especially Barrier, because it can take the edge off any obnoxious, full-field boss attacks.
@@SamiSalamiGER I mean, I was trying to be subtle and not say anything about hard mode, but sure, we can go there.
...I never thought about using Magnify on a support Materia....interesting. And I don't think I used Pray once. The 2 ATB cost is rather steep for an ability that starts off worse than Cure
39:38
Did Cloud do a superhero landing to grab the kids, just to show off? Dangit, you big dork! That's hilarious!
"I should try the simulation agains Shiva, that would be *cool*"
oh Dan... ¬‿¬
44:58 Carrie's comment. XD
45:13 "Childhood friend is only two words, Cloud" Carrie coming in hot with the scathing commentary. Love you, Carrie.
I always was (and am) a Tifa/Cloud shipper, but they did a great job making all the characters feel more fully realized, and I like the dynamic with Aerith and Cloud more in this version than the original.
"So you're telling me that my dear little daughter Marlene is in this lovely cottage.
And that this cottage exists in the ghetto?"
THEY HAVE A F**KING WATERFALL!!
Well, I've been watching this with just about no prior knowledge of the game and its plot, and to my nostalgia-goggle-less eyes it seems extremely well written with some of the best graphics I've ever seen.
Same impression here! I'm already in love with most of the characters and everything and everyone is just so unfairly pretty.
When he want out on the balcony my jaw literally dropped. The writing is also excellent, and I’m absolutely adoring the Aerith/Cloud dynamic.
08:45 Part of me wish we can just do this whole game with Aerith. I would love Cloud/Zack to be with her always having light hearted moments. Ah, my poor heart.
Well, they'll be together for the rest of her life.
“I’m a very unfocused mercenary”. Guess you can say he... has his head in the clouds?
35:58 consecutive dodge rolls look surprisingly silly from the perspective off other party members XD
ruolbu If they were available out of combat, every Let’s Play/speedrun of FF7R would be hilarious.
hey! he started using Cura! I'm so proud of you Dan.
Dan used Cura, it was super effective :)
Oh also, Soul Drain does actually do HP damage to enemies, it just also drains MP, too. The ability description doesn’t convey that easily, unfortunately. I got bored during a later match I was redoing to work toward a trophy and decided to try it out lol.
Yeah I believe it does damage, then restores MP equal to a percentage of the damage dealt.
Well, now I wish I had bothered with that one...
Yeah, it does like 500 damage easy without stagger. And then around 1500 with stagger. It's pretty crazy. The mp is only about 6 without stagger and then about 19-22ish with stagger. Definitely worth using.
Your Barrier Materia is at Level 2. In battle, if you go to Spells > Barrier and press right, you can switch to Manaward (a.k.a. Shell, which halves magical damage.)
I tried to tell him the same thing but about Cure
@@ausarthevile2970 He knows about Cure.
I really like what they do with barrier in this game, because the third stage does both and it's a pretty worthwhile spell in my opinion
@@TheJackOfFools it worked the same in the original. lvl 1 was Barrier, lvl 2 was Shell, and lvl 3 was Wall, but same progression, of physical, magical, then both.
@@chefdano3474 I didn't really pay attention to Barrier in the original, had no idea it was like that all these years.
Aerith either know Cloud because she can commune with the life force as an Ancient-or she can see through Cloud like her well kept windows.
I haven't been this into a dan-playalong since dark souls. So much so I actually get annoyed watching my subscription feed over the weekend.
Dan, if you don't mind doing an animation commentary special on this at some point? I love how they've translated the original character animations into this new version and side-by-side comparison commentary by an animator of why it works so well could be insightful.
He already did that for the intro! But yeah, another video about a few animations from the main game would be great.
@@TheSinrai I know. I'm just mesmerized by how many of the actual literal motions of the characters (tifa, barret) were lifted quite literally from the low-poly overly-theatrical original and made to look almost natural in the remake.
Also, it is a plea for Dan to talk a bit more about his expertise, and share the insight of a trained eye. There are plenty of gameplay play-throughs there aren't many game animator playthroughs, game designer playthroughs etc.
And Dan seems to be reluctant and overly humble to do that. Almost like: "I'm not gonna talk about the animation because that wastes time for the people who are just here to see the play-through". And I'd like to encourage him to do more of that as that is what sets him apart and adds value to his videos.
achievement get in #20... thanks Dan
Sadly, the “this guy are sick” line has also been corrected in all the ports now too. ;;
It was corrected in the PC port about a year after the original was released and has been fixed in every version since. Kinda funny to me how many people didn't notice.
But it lives on in our hearts!
A book by Bugel-something, huh? WONDER WHO THAT COULD BE. I also really appreciate that Dan Floyd's go-to strategy for dealing with difficult combat encounters is THE POWER OF FRIENDSHIP. Very on-brand for the channel.
As an environment artist. I agree with Dan. "Hats off to the environment artist." Damn good job.
Seems like cloud is really "bad at doors" and yet he's the only one in avalanche that can open them, just imagine how hard it must be for everyone else in avalanche.
Tifa and Aerith's interactions in this game are a delight and made me realize that what I actually wanted was FFVII: Tifa & Aerith's Lesbian Eco-Terrorist Fantasy Adventures and I haven't quite forgiven FFVII:R for not being that.
There's always fanfiction. If you still want Tifa & Aerith's Lesbian Eco-Terrorist Fantasy Adventures, go write some!
I love the design of the smoggers. They fit perfectly in the slum areas as they look like they're built from scrap parts someone picked out of the stuff Shinra's been dumping in sector 5.
I think FF7R is the first game ever to have a non-battle version of a battle theme.
It’s just weird when they decide to use the originals battle theme as an area theme, and when you’re not in battle the song actually loses the originals famous “trumpets”.
Foxtail means... Sporty, apparently.
The one was "reunion of lovers" or something...
And the third represents loyalty...
I feel like there's a message here. Secret flower message. Probably about Tifa
"And this cottage exists in the ghetto?!? They have a freaking waterfall!!?" I don't know if you ever came across FF7 Machinabridged by TeamFourStar, but I can't not hear Barrett being flabbergasted when he and Tifa visit Aerith's mom.
18:25 let's not forget that Cloud is running around swinging his sword randomly. It's not a NerveGear or anything.
It's possible to beat Shiva solo. Elemental w/ Ice in your armor to reduce damage is a big help. Otherwise, just be careful to dodge Whiteout.
I did it solo with elemental fire on my weapon. Somehow Blizzaga was so much more devastating for me compared to literally every playthrough I've watched. Or maybe I just wasn't watching my HP.
shdjfhs childhood friend is only two words CLOUD
3:15 was priceless. This writing is just so good. And that interaction right after Cloud trying to say Aerith doesn't know him very well.
And Cloud! Talk to the children gosh darn it! They think you're cool!
I have absolutely zero nostalgia for this video game, but I find that it is 100% amazing. So amazing that I bought the original version on my Switch and have gotten through most of it. I just think it’s great.
As someone whose only experience with any of these characters is via Kingdom Hearts, I can say that wow, the game looks absolutely amazing. And honesty Dan your enthusiasm and obvious love for it is only making it better.
Oh my goodness, the dynamic between Cloud and Aerith in this is so so good!
A bit of dialog I wonder if anyone else caught. At one point Cloud (aka the player) hears people talking about how they got paid to appear on TV and all they had to do was bash Avalanche in the background. Meaning the state-run media was hiring people to push their narrative that Avalanche were the bad guys, which is something state-run media is often accused of doing. Meanwhile they just wanted to be on TV and earn a few gil. Nice bit of storytelling there.
3:10: Elmyra is thinking of the worst possible thing Aerith could have promised him, and it is _so_ much worse than "one date". Cloud is his own worst enemy, and only like 10% of that can be blamed on Dr. Hojo.
11:05: Look! A background NPC talking about a character who'll be important later!
18:30: ...so, is Cloud running and jumping and attacking in the material world? Chadley and Cloud won't be very popular after this incident...
31:31: I guess the kids like Aerith enough to consider her an honorary child.
45:10: It's two words in Japanese, too.
2:50: I dunno, it looks pretty bright outdoors.
I know that giving each distinct time of day its own light would be a _lot_ of work for the technical artists, especially if you want everywhere to look great in all lighting scenarios they can be exposed to, but Midgar _really_ needs _some_ kind of evening filter.
6:30: You need more than an eye to pick the right flowers. You also need a creative mind, a gentle hand, ideally a decent set of those little clipper thingies...
9:10: Time and space. There's more room for Cloud and Aerith to interact without any immediate pressure from Shinra or slum monsters or whatever.
12:05: Watch it, Cloud! You could trample small children if you're not careful. Even those medium children look worse for the wear...
20:20: You're probably supposed to swap characters there.
29:35: The normal number of holes, or the kind that need to be patched?
32:00: Yeah. They can tell whether you're being tryhard or honest.
36:30: I wish the silence debuff had _any_ effect on Aerith's voice lines. Lowering the volume, or replacing them with muffled vocal noises, or not playing them, or _something._ Something to vary it a little and indicate that there's some adverse thing going on and maybe earn a chuckle the first time it happens.
44:55: "Migraine."
"Ah, I'm sorry to hear that. No mortal magic can help you with _that."_
There are so many moments I've been remembering and am looking forward to. The best part is that I'm certain there will be plenty more that weren't in the original or that I'm not expecting. Looking forward to it!
I wonder if you can actually use a party, as it is VR. But if you use the Tifa Materia for giving your attacks Fire elemental damage, it would be much handier to do.
Also, if you give Provoke Materia to the person with the Crescent Moon pendant (? - the one which gives damage resistance when being AI controlled), there you have a combo.
You can use a party! I didn’t beat Shiva until I had Aerith in my party. You could even wait longer when you encounter him with a full three man party. :Bb
Alternatively, all Shiva's attacks are Ice element - a linked Ice - Elemental materia pair in a piece of armor would significantly reduce damage taken, up to absorbing all her attacks entirely. Then it's just a matter of time.
@@KyrilXIV Can confirm. Played Hard Mode and put Ice-Elemental on Aerith's armor. Then just spammed Aerith's basic attacks until she went down.
I am enjoying this series so much! It's like a television show that I get to enjoy with a fellow nerd who theorizes on things the way that I would if I were playing. It's been rough avoiding spoilers for the remake, though. There are plenty of others that have talked about this game that I'm actively avoiding because they've completed everything and I want to be surprised. Anyway, thanks again for sharing your journey! And Teen Dan isn't the only one losing his mind, lol.
Yeah, she's got you pegged pretty good, Cloud.
3:44 I can't read the entire thing, but to my eye the 3rd and 4th lines read "Good Food, Every Day."
I love watching your play-through of this game. Yours is my favorite of the 3 that I am watching. However the thing I love the most is experiencing your first reaction as everything happens. So I really hope that if you are going to start a second game on your own, you won't go further in the story than the recorded version. You may have addressed this already in the video, but I paused it after the first minute (as soon as you said you were thinking about this) to leave this comment.
chriseggus I assumed that went without saying
"Bad at doors"
It's because these ones aren't opened by buttons! You're the button expert, not the door expert!
Saving the kids was a pretty fun little side mission (at least to watch) compared to all the little discrete missions in Sector 7. I kind of wish they had done something more in this gauntlet style back there, too
"I dont know what this game is like for someone who doesnt have tons of nostalgia for the original"
all I knew prior to jumping in was:
Sephiroth is the main villain
the thing happens to Aerith at some point. Aertish is a party member
Cloud is the main character
...thats it
I literally picked this game up purely cuz of the beautiful graphics and fun-looking gameplay...and I immidaitely got so hooked I am now eagerly awaiting pt 2. I LOVED this game and any of the "true, long-lived fans" who just complain or say soem scenes will do nothing but confuse and turn away new people? know what those scenes did for me?
"oh, this scene is probably MEANT to be mysterious and hard to figure out. Thats probably the intent. it will be explained later"
it's almost like that's a common storytelling mechanism in movies and video games.
Having never played these games and watching my partner play, I loved how this game looks and plays. I haven't had the chance to play it, but I really want to.
"Gotta find out who wants these Moogle Medals," he says, right there, in that spot.
By the way, Cure is very slightly more MP efficient than Cura. This is rarely a factor worth considering in combat as ATB gauge is the more scarce resource, but outside combat it's better to only use Cure.
20:45 Do my eyes deceive me? Dan actually used Cura
I hope the person nitpicking at Dan for not using more powerful spells saw that he did it this episode :p
I did notice, and praised him for it. However he still mentioned that barrier wouldn't save him, but if he just hit right there, he'd see he has manaward... Small steps, we'll get there eventually.
It's been so many people, honestly; but I guess they gotta harp on him about something.
The Hollow music background makes me cry
Could says Tifa's name once and Aerith goes "oooh who is she, your girlfriend?!?" Meanwhile I'm siting here like jeez how could assume that from that like what
The anime sighs and grunts are killing me.
As someone who just watched bits and pieces of my brother play when I was a kid and only got to see cameo appearances of characters in other games I love this. This game has so much charm and I really wish I had a PS4 to play it myself, but alas, I’ll have to wait.
Also, the flowers near where she said foxtails did not look like foxtails...at all. Unless they were off screen lol
Good at buttons.
Bad at doors.
Arright then.
Balanced, as all things should be.
Well there isn't a button to press to open Aerith's door, so he's out of ideas.
I'm really enjoying hearing your first impressions as you go through the game, I never played the original until a few years ago so my nostalgia is much different from yours.
We love your gameplay. It feels human..
Barrett and Aerith's dynamic is pretty good, but Aerith and Tifa (and third wheel cloud) have the best dynamic of them all. It's amazing.
Oh my god, Dan is actually using Cura. Now we just need to get him using Thundara and his other tier two spells and we're good!
4:55 then that means you're on late thirties. I know, curiosity killed the cat but I couldn't help
The remake also gives you a lot more time to spend with them
I just want to state for the record, it is very worthwhile to make a conscious effort to complete Chadley's Battle Reports as quickly as possible. Particularly the one that gives you "Steal". You're going to want to have that before you finish Wall Market.
LOL Nevermind, our Dan is killing it all day every day!
It was a rough few tries, but I did beat Shiva here solo with Cloud. I ended up shifting my elemental materia to some linked armor to reduce her damage with that whiteout move and worked better on avoiding it to begin with. I didn't even consider the possibility of fighting her with a full team, to which I kick myself, haha.
About those environments, I've never played the original and everything looks drop dead gorgeous to me too, but the visual worldbuilding feels all over the place. You can tell the original designs they're working off weren't always thought out in depth.
Yeah, baby, it's Kuraudo time!
Kuraudo Sutoraifu
I think running a second game on the side is a good idea. The system seems to reward taking the time to think about what affects what and how to synergize things a bit, and it feels to me like you're forcing yourself to ignore that stuff for the sake of moving things along. Re-experiencing some of the tutorial moments might be useful, too. That way you can focus commentary more on theorycrafting the plot or analyzing animations or marveling over pretty or whatnot.
So, I'm a little curious on this. For this, it looks like there's a bunch of doodads that are 'standard' for an urban environment, like the various pieces of machinery and equipment. Would that be a 'farm out to another studio' or a 'purchase a package of items for an engine of choice' type thing? Some of the tanks and such are real world machines, so it's possible they've been recycled models, although there's also some custom versions (you can spot some in the 'Rude jumps down from the helicopter' scene (if I'm remembering right)).
Never experienced any FF games before, this playthrough kind of makes me want to grab an original one on Switch
play FFVII and FFX if you can they are imo the best by far
@@jamiemills5659 already finished downloading freshly bought FFVII :) As for FFX there seems to be only HD remastered version
@@DemoniacDeath FFX HD is just the original game with a dash of higher textures. It's very worth it.
Those kids are really really really feeding cloud's ego
A few things for not just you Dan, but everyone wanting to pick it up the remake. I would suggest not to buy anymore materia unless its from Chadley. I've found you'll find almost all store bought Materia in the wild (There are materia exclusively found in the wild though). Also, something nice about the intel mission requirements carry over to the next ones even though you have not unlocked them yet, so scan and stagger as many monsters and bosses as you can. You won't find it in this section from what I recall from my own play through, but once you find the Binding Materia, I highly suggest you utilize it. It'll help curb some of the chaos in big fights that don't have sleep immune mobs.
Kid to Cloud: “That was cool!”
Cloud thinks “finally someone calls me cool, it’s been a while!”
Cloud needs inner Carrie!!!
Dan - "She /does/ know you, though, Cloud."
Me - You have no idea.... But I'll refrain from saying more for spoiler's sake.
I KNEW IT!!!
The weekends feel so long without this series
The weapons dealer voice actor we all agree it's torbjorn's voice actor right?
He used Cura! Three cheers for Dan.
I remember not even being able to get that far in the game when I first attempted to play it. All I know is that I didn't even get past the first disc (how many discs did this game take on the PS1?)
And yet, I beat FF8 and FFX. I don't remember if I did or not, but I may have beaten FF4. It's really funny how FF7 was the only FF game I played I didn't like. I might actually consider buying the remake once the PC version comes out (no PS4)
3:45 "I wish I could read that... Well, we'll wait for the PC release, then we'll get to read that." :D
Considering how close you were to summoning Ifrit, I think you could Solo shiva with could if you just made slight optimizations to your materia. Namly if you'd equip fire and weapon elemnt materia you'd be strong enough to take her.
I haven't really played much of VII, and have no nostalgia for it. That being said, this game is amazing.
You are the first person i've watched play this game trying to take Shiva with only Cloud. Very interesting.
I tried to take Shiva on solo myself lmao. I also failed miserably. ^^;;
Yup, whenever you have more than just Cloud in your party. It's not too difficult to take her on solo, though you're going to need to be decent at combat and go in prepared gear-wise.
Very delicate cloud carrying
thank god there was QA guy that went "what if the player doesn't talk to oates?" and devs just went "guess we just make him teleport to the player multiple times", and the QA guy went "but what if the players still refuses to talk to oates", and the dev went "argh fiiiiine, lets just force skip to the next part i guess"
The way I see it, if Materia can give you stat bonuses, then more materia slots means more potential stats, so even if the stats are lower, more slots may be better. I mean, any open slot could be HP Up or a Defensive boost.
Hi Dan! Dan here! I haven't watched this playthrough (though am enjoying the Bloodborne one).. but I would like to ask : Is this worth it so far? I mean, does it seem like a complete game for $60? I don't know if I should wait for all parts of this remake to come out, or if this is great on it's own. Thanks!
Yes. Buy it. It's very good.
If you're familiar with the original, Remake could provide a satisfying story with a few unexpected twists. If you're not... It's harder to recommend. The gameplay only really shines if you're familiar with RPGs and action games (and even then, those elements are constantly clashing), and the story leans too much on the reputation of the original (especially the game's ultimate antagonist).
Honestly, I would say that unless you're watching Dan play and thinking "Huh, that combat looks interesting...", I'd recommend you just keep watching it online.
I want to say those big white flowers are hibiscus, but the style isn't long enough and I'm not seeing any of the telltale anthers. Anybody know what that flower is?
@45:25 Berserk reference? (Guts training with his sword)
may i ask how do they use wood for houses if there is no nature
i might just be misunderstanding the plot but i thought there wasnt really much nature
Finally!
45:23 barreth
Given this video's title, I'm really thankful that there doesn't appear to be a lawn to mow.
And I know what atrocious fanfic you're now thinking of.
I have to ask: Why don't you ever use Potions in battle? They're instant, they don't cost MP, and you have a ton of them.
Happy Star Wars day everyone!
