      Game Awards Best Performance Prediction:
      1. Kaiji Tang as Ichiban Kasuga, Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth (Divided into 6 fields? Wins Actor in a Sole/Primary Playable Character Role)
      2. Cody Christian as Cloud Strife, Final Fantasy VII Rebirth (Though, I wouldn't be TOO surprised by any of these first three winning the undivided field, I still think Kaiji Tang as Ichiban is the strongest bet. Jeurgens is the least likely of them because she's won before. Under the divided system I'd want that would make her a decent bet to win again, but the system they have ONLY works under a "one performer, one win" paradigm.)
      3. Melina Jeurgens as Senua, Senua's Saga: Hellblade II (Divided into 6 fields? Wins Actress in a Sole/Primary Playable Character Role)
      4. Dave B. Mitchell as Dyne, Final Fantasy VII Rebirth (Divided into 6 fields? Wins Actor in an NPC Role)
      5. Matthew Yang King as Eric Tomizawa, Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth (Divided into 6 fields? Wins Actor in a Secondary Playable Character Role)
      6. Dawn M. Bennett as Aigis, Persona 3 Reload

    The story of this game is so weird, for like a dozen reasons but importantly, there's no real ticking clock, no pressure to continue going. Our party's goal in this game is stop Sephiroth, they spend the game following the black robbed folks because they know that there is some sort of connection between them and Sephiroth, then along the way because the goal of 'stop Sephiroth' is so vague and Sephiroth is so absent while at the same time omnipresent it becomes so easy to forget that that's our goal (and that's even during main story stuff this isn't counting the side activities). There isn't really a reason to feel like oh we gotta go do this now like it feels like there should be because every story bit is just things waiting for the party to get there and activate it,. Like say this temple, it was a big rush to get the keystone to get here and get the black materia before Shinra could, but they wouldn't get the keystone before us we had to go get it so they could take it from us (even though their employee had it there's no reason they couldn't just take it from him) then in the temple it needed a Cetran to activate it further which was us. And all of that on I still don't get why Sephiroth can't just get it himself in the first place, or at the end of the episode idk why Cloud needed to hand it to him.
    Things get so disjointed because we forget the goal in the mists of the location stories that when we find the info for the black materia it's like oh yeah, then getting the keystone, and all the little moments of Sephiroth influencing Cloud feels so out of nowhere and sudden compared to the rest of this globetrotting adventure which is otherwise just an anti-Shinra thing, but then reminding you once every dozen hours that theres this supernatural story happening which everytime they start to explain it more questions are raised and something just refused to be explained. I'm kinda rambling now but as we get into the deepend now and the Sephiroth stuff is getting pushed to the forefront it, it annoys me how much I like this story when it is just the anti-Shinra adventure but with the Sephiroth stuff it brings back all the frustration from watching the original game and how both none of this makes sense and is just super duper frustrating as an experience storytelling wise

    This part of the game really confused me. Spoilers for the episode below...
    .
    .
    .
    .
    Was the black materia that they found a fake or not? Aerith calls it a fake, and Barret tosses it aside like it's trash. And of course Cloud is obsessed with it anyway, but he's basically a zombie by this point. But then Sephiroth suddenly steps in a grabs it and says it's the key to unlocking the true Black Materia, and suddenly Aerith thinks its important again? Was Sephiorth's description meant to be a Big Reveal of something that Aerith didn't fully understand until that point? If so, it certainly didn't really come across that way. And either way, if there was even a fraction of a doubt in the heroes minds as to what the supposedly "fake" Black Materia was still capable of, you'd think that after all that fighting and dungeon diving and nearly getting crushed, the team would still try to keep it safe just in case, right?
    It feels like clumsy writing just for the sake of subverting audience expectations. And since Sephiroth was just going to get his hands on it anyway, why have them cast it aside just for him to pick it up and use it as a lure Cloud away, just to toss it back to him so that he can hand it over again? The way this scene was handled in the original game wasn't exactly elegant or straightforward either, but if the alternative was something this needlessly convoluted, I feel like the scene would have flowed a lot smoother if they had just done it more like in the original.

    • @ArcturusDeluxe
      @ArcturusDeluxe 3 місяці тому +5

      When Sephiroth picks up the black materia for the first time, he calls it a "key to access the true counterpart between worlds", so it isn't the actual black materia, but it is still important. Everything else is just Sephiroth toying with Cloud.

    • @KravenErgeist
      @KravenErgeist 3 місяці тому

      @@ArcturusDeluxe I put that much together eventually, but I still had to make a lot of assumptions to get there. The scripting and story-boarding of the scene could have conveyed this a lot more clearly than how it was presented. There just wasn't enough narrative weight put into that moment to convince me that any of our heroes truly believed what Sephiroth was saying. For the team's attitude to change as suddenly as it does for a narrative maguffin of this magnitude, you NEED to convey that with more than just one character saying "Give that back!" like a child who just had their toy stolen or something. As it was, it seems more like the rest of the team (and not just Cloud) were simply giving Sephiroth exactly what he wanted without putting any thought, care or effort into what they were doing, and it just felt out of character.
      There's also no explanation as to why Sephiroth gives the materia back to Cloud, only to compel him to hand it right back over. The implication seems to be that, in that amount of time, the orb had somehow transformed into the real black materia. You could extrapolate that something symbolic about it being given directly from Cloud's hands is what makes it transform or unlocks the true black materia, but again, you have to make a LOT of assumptions for this part of the scene to make any sense. Nothing about what transpires in that moment (or any foreshadowing context clues earlier in the game) would suggest Cloud handing over the fake black materia to Sephiroth with his own hands could somehow transform it into the real one. And from the reactions on the characters' faces, to the way the black materia itself appears, there's no clear sign given to the audience that suggests that the physical materia orb itself had somehow changed from being the fake one to being the real one in that moment.
      There's just this weird narrative disconnect between how Cloud and Sephiroth are acting and how Aerith, Barret, Tifa and the others are acting, and the way they all treat the black materia just seems to shift at random according to some invisible authorial hand that the audience isn't supposed to be able to see. And that authorial hand was ALL I could see in that moment. Because in scenes like this, the Big Bad ALWAYS gets away with the Maguffin to put his plans into motion. We all expected Sephiroth to get the materia in the end. What matters then is that the series of events leading up to that don't feel too out of sync with with the characters and story leading up to it. But between Barret and Aerith casually disregarding an artifact they clearly know nothing about and then barely batting an eye when it turns out they were wrong, to Sephiroth playing hot potato with Cloud and the black materia with no clear explanation, I feel like that's exactly what happened here.

    Sepheroth really does feel more like a supernatural malevolence in the remake than he did in the original. Before he felt like he could plausibly be a person but now he feels more like a ghost that's possessing people. I'm not sure whether or not that adds to or detracts from his characterization. It definitely makes certain sequences feel dream-like, as though we the viewers can't really trust in what's real because there's this being that so clearly does not belong.

      For instance, SPOILER FOR ENDING

    6:38 There's a theory stemming from this bit about Jenova wearing the faces of the dead. It suggests that the Sephiroth we've been chasing isn't really Sephiroth, it's merely Jenova assuming his likeness. In this sense, Sephiroth is as much a puppet as Cloud, and the true enemy pulling all the strings is Jenova. I don't know if I fully buy into it, but it does put a neat spin on things.

    7:54 It is a bit weird to be giving a presentation like this and going "HA-HA, have monsters to fight!" for no real reason.
    10:56 One thing I find fascinating is that Sephiroth has always had this really eerie but undeniable charisma, but when Cloud's affected by him, Cloud is ultra-cold and snappy.
    11:27 Disagree. "Forever" exists, but it cannot be measured, much like the expanse of space. Which, when it dies, is likely to collapse and be born anew in a cycle unending. Nor can you build for it, it is beyond mortal grasp.
    12:05 Okay, that's a much cooler design for the Demon Gate.

    23:38 Tifa, don't. He deserved the scorn, imo. I still appreciate the choice to scrap the bot so you guys can get out, but he did still betray you at the worst time for you guys and the best time for Shinra... *after* he did all that work to make you trust him.

    23:28 Two things about this escape that I really like: first, we once again control Aerith, which helps break the absolute connection between player and main character we often feel in games, where the character isn’t doing things, we are. But Cloud is increasingly doing things the player would not, and I like that we don’t control him here.
    And second, it’s easy to miss but while everyone else starts running away immediately, Cloud stops and waits for Aerith. Which in another context could be sweet, but in this one is absolutely not. He even specifically turns around to face her while he waits

    Cetra exposition here is *fascinating*. The imagery at 7:22 is awfully similar to The Goddess from Loveless as we saw her portrayed by Jessie. And the three men at 2:33 look quite similar to Alphreid and his two fellow heroes. The implications are wild. To spell it out, it suggests the story of Loveless is based on a real story - a story where the supposed heroes are in fact the humans waging war against the Cetra (who were written to be the villains of the tale after the fact by the conflict's victors, as the tyrannical nation of Guardia). The "Hours Prior" sequences in the Temple of the Ancients, with the gears and clockwork and stuff, felt very similar to how Guardia was portrayed in the play. And the so-called Goddess seems to be Jenova? Her gift may very well be a curse in disguise, then. And then what about the superboss from Crisis Core, Minerva, who was implied by that game to be The Goddess? What's her deal?
    (Speaking of Crisis Core, the logical conclusion that Genesis's interpretation of Loveless was way off base is very very funny to me. get rekt, poetry nerd)

    Rebirth and original comparison by Playframe episode numbers:
    Start to end - episode 22
    I think that finally means we've finished with what episode 22 of the OG covered. Well, maybe the next part might still count, but the bulk of it is complete. Glad we did still get a Demon Gate fight.

    I'd been waiting to comment until I saw more of the game towards the black materia event, but I really want to offer a counterpoint to how they are handling Cloud in this game. While the increased focus on his mental deterioration and Sephiroth's influence over him is great drama and goes a long way to foreshadowing the events of this episode, they go so hard and make it so obvious that it is honestly starting to damage the other characters. At this point, Cloud literally tried to murder another party member while under Sephiroth's control all the way back in Gongaga and was practically screaming at the party with a megaphone that things were getting worse throughout the temple. And yet, despite Tifa and Aerith especially clearly recognizing the danger, no one has any response other than 'Gee, maybe if we just keep saying eveything will be okay it will be.'
    As I said before, I get why people like the change, it makes some really impactful, emotional moments, but some mid point between the two extremes so cloud isn't carrying around a neon sign saying 'I am a sleeper agent' would be nice.

      @Ahrpigi but everyone else already knows him and Biggs has already worked with him and no one thinks that's odd. 27:25 The bar was on the ground for Cait Sith and this scene in the original and Rebirth does do better with him but the whole "sacrifice" is still totally undermined by him coming back immedietly. In this format I feel like they should have let him stay dead for now, and then make a return in game 3. Also Tifa and Aerith's "I feel bad for how we treated him" thing, no no you shouldn't just because he came in in the last second and helped doesn't make up for what he did and you shouldn't feel bad

      Cait Sith's sacrifice was always supposed to feel cheap. In the original, the purpose is to set the player's expectations that the heroes have plot armor, only to pull the rug out from under you later.

      @@imveryangryitsnotbutter I get why they would want to do that for later things but it’s still bad that they do it. I really don't understand the change from Cloud giving Sephiroth the black materia, to Sephiroth just gets the materia, then gives it to Cloud, so Cloud can... give it right back?

  • @Caterfree10
    @Caterfree10 3 місяці тому +9

    31:41 There is nothing heterosexual about this moment. Most importantly, Sephiroth was in possession of the Black Materia. He could have taunted Cloud with it any way he chose. Why make Cloud reach for it oh so desperately and offer it to Sephiroth on his knees? Come now. The devs absolutely have seen the art and the fic at this point. 👀
    Also, I learned an interesting rumor in that supposedly, some of the devs who worked on Mobius Final Fantasy, a now defunct mobile game cursed by a worse than average gacha (not even a pity system! When Genshin does better at gacha, you know you’ve screwed up). And it’s a crying shame that crappy gacha dragged it down because the original story was honestly really great. Seriously, please look up a cutscene compilation one of these days!
    Anyway, so sometimes crossover events happened featuring other Final Fantasies, and VII got 2 as the golden child of Square. One of them, however, gave us an absolutely infamous scene featuring Sephiroth pinning Cloud with darkness, forcing him into a kneeling position, then #%^*ing caressing Cloud’s face while lovingly calling him his puppet. This scene from a gacha game lit the entire Sefikura shipping side of the fanbase on fire and it regularly circulates on our assorted timelines on social media. And if the aforementioned rumor about devs from this later being on Rebirth is true? Yeah, the devs know EXACTLY which fanbase has the most money and what we love in Sefikura to boot lmao.
    (The love triangle folks are also being strung along too, make no mistake. Y’all just aren’t waking up to the why a canon ship has never been declared in FFVII for Cloud lmfao.)
