I can tell from the first minute that you are a friendly/cool guy :)
After waiting for over 15 years I finally bought & received my first Cold Steel Magnum ix San Mai iii, made in Japan, from a collector. WOW … absolutely stoked! ❤️
can you link me the seller?
15 years?! Holy crap
Awesome demonstration and discussion. I own the VG-10 San Mai and 3V 12" Blade Magnum Tantos and absolutely luv them. Well done! :-) Peace, Stiletto :-)
Awesome video!
I've got a Japanese Cold Steel Tanto from way back in 1984!
Still razor sharp.
❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️ jealous 😊
Dudeeeeeeeeee
The only place I ever saw them advertise back then was in Soldier of Fortune.
@@twatmunro thanks to my Dad!
I have my 6 inch Tanto since 1986 and nobody is ever getting it off me ever. It took a while to get used to the feel but I will be taking it to my grave.
I really miss the old leather sheaths. I still have my original tanto from the 80s.
Great Video bro. I have my San Mai III 6inch that I bought at a C/Steel ( Ventura ) parking lot sale almost 20 years ago - still shaving sharp.
After watching this, I will pull the trigger on a 12incher too. Well done mate. Cheers.
Awsome knives , great cut testing can't go wrong with cold steel tanto series .
Thank you for clearing that up Richard. I wish we were neighbors, you look like a person who knows how to have fun with knives. Be well.
Thanks for the great video! I wondered how close the new one was to the Japan made version.
After watching this I ordered mine. Thank you!
Hello The same thing ..! I just recept one last ..! and Now I ve got 3 knifes Cold Steel
Excellent video on the Cold Steel Tanto blades, thank you!
You got skills my friend!!good job!!just bought one like 20 minutes ago!!
I have the 9" 3V version, I bought new in box for $100 delivered. Use it all the time in the garden, chopped several limbs off my apple tree, and back pack with it. Does the job for me.
Watching made me miss my old knife collection...had alot of nice ones. Anyway good video and cool knifes
Great comparison exactly what I needed . Hit every point . I’m buying .
hello . The same thing ..! I just recept my last Cold Steel knife..!.
I wouldnt want that dude hackin at me with a blade, I'll say that... Awhile back I bought a Taiwan AUS-8 Kobun. Can't say I like the scabbard much but the knife will never cut thru it and hurt the carrier... so that's a good thing. The knife itself, I have yet to sharpen it, seems to hold the edge really well. After a lifetime of bowie-type blades I was iffy on the Japanese-style but have yet to be seriously disappointed by the little knife. Got no need/use for a large tanto but have no concerns as to how one would serve as a business-knife if called upon.
Thanks for the vid, LeeFist, hope to see more from you in future!
Chin woo represent. Cloud forest. I am awake waiting on mine. Always since a child loved tanto blades. Thank you for helping me feel like a good decision was made., got some Japanese San mei from late nineties as well brother. What a blessing it is
The Japanese versions were made by Hattori Knives.
The best ones
Awesome Video ! Thanks so much I ordered it !
I opted for the shorter Magnum Tanto II and took the belt loop off as well. I carry it daily in my belt like a wakizashi and it gives me comfort.
Awesome review! And very cool channel too. Subbed!
Thanks!
Seki has produced some incredible quality. So has Taichung factory. Thank you for the demonstration, and analysis.
I snagged one of these from Walmart online of all places in November of 2020 for $181... Hell of a value for the knife, I prob should have bought a couple of them haha. Awesome blade!
I like these.. I have the master tanto. I’m between this and the tai pan. I love both of them
My first time and I love your videos
Just subscribed. Really enjoyed the video. Look forward to watching.
Awesome video Sir 🙂
Cool video. Thanks.
4:30 So, who you say that was a
…“COLD steal”?🤔
See what I did there?🤣
👍🏽Excellent review.
I would love to have either one.
I like your review - plus you look like a good person.
I carry this all the time too!
Thank you my brother I see this knife all the time on Amazon the cheapest I have seen it was $250.... I have a number of Cold steel knives I really like their drop forged series... Cold steel is one of my favorite companies because they are not very expensive and they are quality battle knives I cannot see myself paying $400 for a knife....
Them folks in Taiwan know what they doing , they take pride in their production and that's a good thing for use all and it's good of Japan to manufacture the steel for them.
always wanting a Buck 184 Buckmaster, but not wanting to pay the price, I bought a Taiwan made copy called a Ramster, pretty decent Buckmaster clone, and pretty decent for the money
I got the magnum 2 with the CPM-3V, 7.5 inch blade. I thought the 12 look silly because it seems too long with too short a handle. But Leefist makes it loo truly awesome. Now I want one!
So, I always admire 11inch+ blades for a single reason. Animals. Whenever youre fighting an animal, say a black bear or even a grizzly, they are stronger, faster and more powerful overall... what will give you the win is having 2 knifes 11inch+ so when the beast comes at you, you at least can doublestab the fucker. This is actually a true story, a guy was attacked by a grizzly and flew him 10 feet in the air and his firegun was nowhere to be found (he had it in his hand and the tackle made him eat so much shit the gun flew) so he took out 2 arkansas knife and said to the bear COME AT ME ! And the bear actually left!
Dude that is truly frightening! The guy must have known he was going to tangle with a grizzly for him to be loaded with a gun and 2 twelve inch knives. But I will tell you straight out, no damn grizzly is going to make me eat any shit! I will have unloaded my 20rd .308 ar10 pistol into his ass long before touching me. Peace!
I see a dog and immediately hit like.
Great points. Just ordered one from Amazon. Do you really EDC that knife?
Often at home yes
Thumbs up cos I saw you holding that massive knife
I one it with the black Toni finish wich looked nice but over time going in and out the sheath plus cutting it wears off. Mine got stolen unfortunately. But i am getting the new satin finish one in a month for my birthday im glad it wont wear the finish on the blade but i originally planned on having both. Amazing blades. Iv been looking at the new D guard punch dagger aswell I love cold steel products and highly recommend this knife specifically even if your friends call you crazy lol
the japanese version leans more on looking like a katana as far as the shape goes.
I have a master tanto and a San mai 7 1/2 . Both excellent. If not carrying a firearm these will do. Had kydex sheaths made for both. Carry the Magnum IWB, added paradiddle like the saya from a waki or a katana. May pick up one of the Taiwan versions. Just curious if you were in the military in early 2000s
No sir!
Adding the master Tanto in San Mai soon, I have the Kubon, also the SRK in VG10 San Mai
Excellent choices.
my left ear loved this video 🙂
My left ear actually felt discriminated against.
Got mine for 215 yesterday!
Richard Lee, what method do you use to sharpen your Magnum Tanto XII's?
just ceramic rods. after twenty years no chips or rolls, just a quick touch up with rods is all it's ever needed.
@@RichardLeeLeefist
Thanks!
Not sure what's up with the SecureX sheath, but it dulls the knife. :\ There are UA-cams where this is demonstrated. I like that leather sheath. However, went with a nice Kydex and Tek-Lok, which looks reasonably good and can be easily carried as I choose. The Master Tanto in San Mai steel is fantastic.
nice video
Nice review yeah I always prefer the Japanese Metallurgy and bladesmithing, they are truly the Masters! However I think Taiwanese quality and American Quality are very close the only difference is the price!
Great review! I was looking at getting this in cpm3v. But saw a video by JOE X doing a destruction test on the Magnum Tanto IX in CPM3V and the pommel broke off and handle came off from striking the blade on a stone. Obviously no one would subject that sort of abuse on any knife in real world use. But the pommel breaking off is a bit of concern. Just want to get your opinion on this and how san mai compares to cpm3v.
Coming soon!
F JoeX. This here is a prime example on why no one should watch some simpleton egomaniac on UA-cam and his stupid antics - who BTW doesn't know anything about knives. All he does is make a fool of himself.
Thanks for this video, keep it up! I had the 7 1/2 inch Japanese version that I bought around 1996 or so before the sheath had a snap, it was just Velcro. It was stolen, and I was heartbroken after having it for almost 25 years. I recently bought the Taiwan version, and this video made me feel a lot better about it. I actually prefer the secure-x sheath for people commenting about preferring leather. I don't know if it will hold up for 25 years or more, but the leather sheath was a huge shortcoming of the original. There was no good way to carry it, and after sharpening the blade to a razer edge, it would cut though the sheath when drawing the blade. The original looked good as new until it was taken, and this new one seems to have the same quality.
Does the secure-x sheath dull your blade? I've heard that from some people. I'm getting the 7 1/2 inch.
Only problem is that secure ex dulls the blade Due to being made out of glassfibres
Where can you buy the one made in japan? And to identify if it is legit i saw one on ebay and it says cold steel calif/ made in japan. And if im spending 380 or less i sure don’t want it to be fake. Hopefully you can help.
Ask for one on Facebook cold steel nayion. I'm sure someone has one
I've had many Cold Steel products although never a SanMai steel variant. Always kept my eye on them though but over the years I have read some concerning reviews about them failing catastrophically and unexpectedly early and on the other end of the spectrum others say it is a super steel that is worth every penny. And most concur that the old sk5 knives were something special and should be procured whenever come across. But as with any mass produced knife there will be variables and inconsistencies fortunately today this percentage is relatively low in the "mid tier manufacturers range" (CS Spyderco, ESEE, Bencgmade etcetera).
Although It is still always a gamble as to which you will receive.
Don't know where I was going with that but yeah there's my two cents
/insert obligatory: take it with a grain of salt
Great answer, “mass produced blade”! I was on the fence to buy one, but what you pointed out it’s exactly my concern! Custom always have my priority!
@@hugofeynman They make only a small run of these per year and with high quality control and the most skilled workers. They are allways perfectly made knives. Dont hear on all the bs on the innternet because people allways think theyre knife is the best. I think these are better than the old and better tetechnology then before and better steel. And less ricasso is great, gives you more edge. Buy one and be happy about it and love it. Taiwan is the new Japan.
@@bushcraft_in_the_north Absolutely agree: Could not initially understand why Spyderco's Vallotton was priced so high for a Taiwanese- manufactured knife, until one was inspected. It was completely flawless; the fit and finish were extraordinary. Thereafter purchased same knife, and have purchased other spyderco Taiwanese made knives, and the same was noted for these also. In short - with respect to knives at least - Taiwan IS the new Japan.
@@robertcong-leton3275 i totally agree
The only problem I had with mine is sharpening it. It is some very hard steel and it takes some effort to bring it back to full sharpness when it needs it.
You can send it back to company to get it sharpened for free just pay shipping and handling
I agree with you mines came dull but just hand sharpening all day with the exact edge angle she's back to paper shaving sharp looking forward to CPM 3V version
wish you could compare the CPM3V one :)
I have one. Will one day!
I like both blades. cold steel makes there's more tactical and modern day use
what is the use case for this size of tanto? It seems like a small machete.
Mainly has a defensive tool
Вот это я понимаю рекон танто! Очень жаль, что у нас не продают таких.
Daily carry.Woods ,Boat,Opera,Kitchen Finest Kind.
Mine should be here Monday, I have the recon tanto “love it” and the master tanto I got maybe a few months ago.. which I also love but after seeing this blade. I was like might as well get em all
how much did you pay for it?
@@MasterofPlay7 mm 200 I think. eBay
@@jeffcon123 that's cheap
i live in canada, now on amazon is $300 plus tax 330 cad, do you think is worth it? I mean is cheaper than high end kitchen knife like miyabi
@@MasterofPlay7 check on eBay, I’ve found a few in the 215-230 range 300 is kinda high... that’s just me tho . It’s def a serious piece of steel
where can i buy the japanese one? i just want the leather shield
Been discontinued for years. Most are buying the Taiwanese and then getting a leather sheath maker to make a custom
Bought mine on Amazon 12 inch tanto 190 bucks and I also carry mine daily the same as you in the belt not on it ..great Vid!!
Awesome! Glad you got one. Itll be a prize item in the future.
Your %100 sure its not a knock off?

@@joshuashaw7391 i'll probably use it in the kitchen as kitchen knife, it's actually cheaper than high end kitchen knives xD
what’s the main performance difference for san mai and the 3v?
Durability and edge retention, 3v is king
@@RichardLeeLeefist nice, i guess san mai just has better corrosion resistance?
So after the test would u say the taiwanese felt better "in use"?
Equal, however the Japanese has something special to it
@@RichardLeeLeefist it's all sentimental xD
I have the vg-10 san mai srk, and recon tanto both vg-10 san mai
Great knives. Now you need a tanto and taipan
I like the Japanese version
I want the blade 3in longer, 1/2 wider and a double handed handle...
Isn't the rubber handle loosened of the Cold steel magnum tanto?
I've had it over 20 years and cut thousands of times and the handle is still perfect
@@RichardLeeLeefist thank you man. I'm gonna purchase one
The VG10 steel is still made in Japan has you say. The VG10 is supposed to be a upgrade. I prefer the leather sheath, the belt attachment on the securex is oversized. Cheap. Looks like it was made for a bigger knife. Cold Steel should make them to fit individual models. It has two slots for screws. It should be wider so you can put two screws on each side. Has for the plastic sheath they don't even wipe the plastic before assembly. So they are full of grit. When you get a new one they are scratched to shit. Ok if you are going to hard use it. But for collectors, it is bad.. good vid my friend!
The leather sheaths are the best! But cost is the issue. All my san mai knives will eventually get a leather sheatj
VG-1 and VG-10 Steel are both made by the same company (Takefu Special Steel Co. Ltd) in Japan. VG-1 is basically a econo-grade version of VG-10 in that the steel lacks the more expense components, Cobalt and Vanadium, which are in VG-10.
@@F15ElectricEagle VG-1 is less prone to chipping than the VG-10. I think this makes it a much better steel for a hard use knife.
@@RichardLeeLeefist you are right. I just purchased the leather to make the sheaths for all my CS knives. Securex shsaths are rubbish. I took some apart and the grit and dirt inside is bad, and the material is also rough.
@@RichardLeeLeefist you should see the prices in the UK!
What state are you rocking a monster like that
Washington
Looking at the trees I thought maybe northern California. You might be labeled a terrorist with the magnum. Thanks for the video. Like others on here I took advantage of the amazing amazon deals and got this one as well as the mid size one.
@@_THUMPR_ lol i was guessing some where north west coast too based on the trees...
Are these actually San-Mai laminated?
Yes sir! Hard core in the middle, soft on the sides
@@RichardLeeLeefist Interesting, so on the spine I presume you can see an actual core that looks different from the outer jacket?
I love San Mai knives, and find that Japanese made ones always have a consistent lamination line, whilst foreign made ones usually do not.
Yeah the Japanese lam lines are clearer but the Taiwanese did a great job. You can see the core on the spine and obviously the line on the blade itself. Almost like a hamon line. It's badass
Hi ..! I am not sure , cause I' ve got bad ears , but the sound of Nippon version is it not best than Taïwan version when the blades are cutting the air .?? Or is it just an idea like that ....?!!! ( Sorry for no - mystake i' am French 😁) .. & I ' ve just order one Magnum Tanto XII San Maï .. & may be I will order an other Master Tanto VG1 San Maï TM from Japan Ventura CA , mint condition for 348Euros ) .
So in the Master Tanto Japan , the ricasso & " the spine " too seems more thicker , all the long of the blade ! than the new version from Taïwan ..! Have you see that too ..?? Thank' s for all informations every body ..
Both are exactly same thickness. But the Japanese one just feels better. Get one if you can
@@RichardLeeLeefist Hello . Thank for infos , I' ve just recept Magnum the Tanto XII San Maï & it 's a very beautyfull blade .!

So,this is COLD STEEL MAGNUM XII TANTO ?
I think CPM-3V version should be a lot better
i don't like the 3v version coating
@@MasterofPlay7 if you're talking about the 3v nightfall version, theres a non nightfall version for 3v
If you can't tell the difference in how they cut, and the Taiwanese version uses an "upgraded" steel, how is it only 99% as good as the Japanese version?
Buy both and feel it
Cut 😂 take two with sound please 👍🏻
No sound?!? Uh oh. I have sound...weird
Nope absolutely not a peep, no problem with any vids on YT but it’s just white noise and an inaudible murmur far far away. Weird indeed 🤔
Cold Steel had a Magnum Tanto XII 20 years ago?
Japanese version.
I believe it was 99 or 00 when I got it.
It appears they’ve been discontinued. I found out about the Magnum Tanto IX in an EMP survival novel and the XII just a couple years ago. I thought they were a more recent model. I really wanted the black DLC in CPM 3V steel. I couldn’t find any but I did find it in satin. I might use gun blueing on it.
Thanks for vid and reply. :)
Yeah black is hard to find. Check out cold steel nation on Facebook. Someone will have one
@@RichardLeeLeefist Too late. I bought it. it is so freaking beautiful. Hard for me to alter it but I can’t have it glaring sunlight. I’m going to get it ceracoated flat black. 3V steel is hard to beat for a combat steel at this price range and quality!
as long as it dont break i think it would be easier to cut pineapple and watermelon with this
I AM BETWEEN THE MAGNUM AND THE MASTER ? ANY SUGGESTIONS ARE APPRECIATED......
Get both! They may never come back! Always start with the largest and go smaller. A large knife can do anything a small knife can do and more. A small knife can never be more than it is!

Mannn, for that kind of money I'd rather just buy the CPM 3V Taiwan version far far superior steel than anything cold steel has ever used before! I do actual have the madr in italy 3V SRK, Italy 3V master hunter, 3V pendleton made in Taiwan and also either the 7in or 9in 3V tanto Taiwan you just can't beat the steel choice all around for toughness, ease of sharpening and stropping back along with incredible edge retention and stability....

Very cool of you to blade up with one of those.
I have 2 Japanese, Cold Steel China And Taiwan, are good dont be fooled
SecureX sheath... That sucks!!
Ouch my left ear! Fix your audio man
I like buying things made in the free country of Taiwan to support the free people of Taiwan. As a collectors item the Japanese version is very nice.
Down with the CCP and all its evils!
Securex sheaths suck! They dull the blade before you cut anything. They need to go back to leather
