Jeremy Strong called this Kendall's mortal wound and honestly I see it. She didnt have many lines throughout the series but she was always there in Kendall's background. Whether we see her or see him asking for her. Every time he's in a crisis her name is the first one out of his mouth. He depended on her a lot. Her, Rava, and the kids represented Kendall's sort of humanity. He's losing all of them as he loses himself to become Logan. It is a spectacular character arc

Well, this is what it means to be Logan's number one boy unfortunately. The series was either going to end with him recognizing the value of his family and his humanity and walking away from it all. Or he'd turn into this. A selfish, egomaniac consumed by power- the poison dripping through.

yea cause he doesn’t gaf about any of them. they’re all just accessories to his pathetic, desperate grabs for the power he wants but constantly fails to get. and a lot of it is rooted in his desire to own the women (especially the woc) in his life. he wants the kids the control rava and her emotions (which he perceives as dramatic while throwing a literal bitch fit himself). and he wants to own jess and have her be his dog, like hugo. but they’re both smarter than that so they fuck off to go live lives unaffected by kendall’s delicate feelings and desperation to make his dead dad proud.

Thats why this show is so great. I remember freelancing for someone right out of college doing motion graphics...but only getting paid in "exposure" and like 20 bucks a day. I did it because I needed the work to make a nice reel to get a real job. Jobs back then were asking for 2-5 years experience after college and a showreel of the work you've done. Anyhow, once I starved thru that two year experience I had a decent reel I was looking to move on..I told the person I was working with and she went IRATE on me and kicked me out of her office.... I had NOTHING, but my reel. She told me id never get a job (those exact words) and how much she was doing me a favor. I ended up getting a corporate job two weeks later. She emailed me an apology, but I never responded or said anything else to her ever since that day...like 15 years ago. Worked out well for me.

That scene where Jess was overwhelmed in the hallway with Greg was so powerful even though it was so short. Without the writers having to say it, Juliana Canfield did an excellent job of portraying Jess’s reaction. Jess realized that as a Black woman, Kendall will never protect her and anything she does for their family is her complicity in a system that is actively trying to break her down. kendall’s relationship to women is SOOOO well written and some people are so media illiterate that they can’t understand kendall’s relationships to women are criticism of men who act like this. he thinks he owns every women and resorts to hysteria and bitch fits when he discovers women aren’t actually his mindless slaves. and when he’s confronted with the idea that he is 10000000% a misogynist, he childishly flip-flops between telling himself he’s powerful for saying/doing misogynistic things cause he’s too stupid and immature to manufacture any other kind of power for himself beyond saying degrading things to his sister, treating his assistant like he owns all her time and labor, or trying (and CONSTANTLY) failing to manipulate rava who’s too smart to ever fall for his bs again. or he’ll try desperately to prove he’s a feminist so he’ll feel validated in his need to feel like a good person, despite not being one. he wants every bit of power logan had over the women in his life but he wants to pick and choose those women and have them hand over their agency willingly. logan had dogs, the kind of women that he had in his life were a very specific kind. either misogynistic (or indifferent) women willing to give up everything to be bought off by logan (or in shiv’s case, power and attention) or weak women who he took advantage of with all his power. but kendall can’t have everything he wants, just because he wants it and he doesn’t understand that. he not only thinks he’s entitled to women, he thinks he’s entitled to women on exclusively his terms. but is too stupid and sexist to see that every woman in logan’s life was both severely traumatized by him and also only around him for their own benefit. like gerri especially, she’s a good counter to jess. she’s willing to take it, all of it, cause she’s rich and powerful. all the men she works for/around treat her as a token woman and degrade her 24/7 but she’s indifferent cause she values money and power and doesn’t care about being respected by men or maintaining agency. which is problematic in a sense cause obviously she’s still a very privileged person, but also a perfect example of how a lot of women interact with misogyny. they dgaf and ultimately benefit from their indifference. but jess and rava got out and will still be better off for it outside of the roys bubble of desperation for un-tactful power and control over them .

You understand the individual characters quite well and the dynamics that play out between them and other characters who, for the sake of scripted television, have only one or two layers (at best) to their personality and motivations. In real life, people can be more complex. I haven't been with the series long enough to have your insight into the characters but I see Kendall as a beta male with other males but in this scene, with a woman, because of his misogyny, his disdain allows him to be an alpha. He is an awkward alpha, however, as if he is not quite sure what to make of all that is left unsaid, and would rather move past it so he can get back to thinking of himself and what he wants and how to get it. It's the way he thinks his ex-wife is overreacting by trying to protect their non-white daughter from the impacts of him supporting a white supremacist candidate. All of it paints a realistic picture. The show does a very good job of showing just how blind these people who are extremely privileged can be to everyone else and how events impact them.

EXACTLY. he treats her like a genie or a minion to just throw his incoherent wants, needs, thoughts, and feelings at. and feels entitled to own every second of her life because he pays her salary. a well written criticism of the MANY real people like this who just want slaves. like the money he gives jess is insignificant to him, so he basically just wants to own every second over her life and then can feel entitled in his desire to be served because he pays her well but he doesn’t understand that the problem is wanting to own all her time and labor in the first place, even if he’s paying well for it. she’s a person, who felt that her personal well-being was more important than the money and access he can give her, something he should learn something from but won’t.

He was kind of just triggered by her reasoning, considering he already feels guilty about the election and now his own wife is acting like he’s a danger to his own children. So when one of the very few people he actually trusts tells him that she’s leaving because of how they handled the election, it just further proved that it’s not just his wife - there are a lot of people who look at him differently now. That’s why he says the line “you’re being stupid, everyone is being stupid!” It’s not just about his assistant.

It's interesting how this show exists solely through the eyes of the mega rich and powerful kids; some Characters out of the family get a more prominent role like Gerri since they can't really do without her type; but the PAs like Jess they've been here since the beginning of the show and we know absolutely nothing about them; they have a few lines here and there exclusively regarding the meat of the business; and through the eyes of Kendall that's exactly how Jess exist; she's in the background; a sort of "NPC" as they would say in his asshole world and she only becoming just a bit relevant when she decides to quit; which to Kendall is actually something bothering enough for him to pay attention. I think the show succeeds really well at showing this completely disconnected bubble of super powerful people with a terminal case of main character syndrom, and this explains how they can act like this; without any regard for the consequences their actions have on the life of billion of people.
