Hyundai is the only company that integrates the LSD, motor, and reducer, and this is Hyundai's unique patent. I think this is Hyundais attempt at going against the petrolheads typical saying - "EV's have no soul". The fake noise stuff may tickle their ears and give them a sense of engagement with the paddle shifts.
I think you're way off base with the artificial shifting. I would definitely use it. In fact, I dreamed this up years before Hyundai did it. I also wish they'd do a simulated stick shift with simulated clutch. I want electric, but I want the fun and sound of shifting. There's definitely a big market for this.

One of the best review about this magic Hyundai Ionia 5 N. Thank you for the complete review, including the technical part with the Hyundai presentation and interview. Tried to access the pres but can't download it for a more in depth review. Ordered mine in January in Europe and now waiting for it... The more I look the reviews, and especially your's, the more I'm in the hurry for getting it. I will extensively use and test the car but it reminds me the behavior of my previous Mitsubishi Evo 9, but with more fun, more power and less CO2 emission... and a more quiet long trip on highway!
@@brycemarkel9045At least since this has such good pricing to start with I don't think depreciation will be *too* hard. Think of it like the MG4 XPower, at the starting price of that car I highly doubt it will depreciate hard. But $45-50k in 2 years is probably likely. The electric Hyundais have been holding up fairly well on value, if you bought a Hyundai Ioniq 7 years ago for 33k€ and drove it 150-200k kilometers you'd still get 16.5k€ for it today.
Ioniq 5N is the refreshed version just in the N version. As seen with the rear wiper, the new CCOS system, bigger battery etc. All this will soon or later come down to the normal Ioniq 5 with the new model year refresh.
Always interesting to hear different opinions on the same car. Matt LOVES that car so much he might cancel is Macan order and get this instead. The shifting sold him on it.
I like the N Shift feature. Driving EVs is pretty boring from an enthusiast perspective. The acceleration is a novelty at first then I get bored. For someone like me, who is coming from a manual V8 Camaro, this would be a nice feature whenever im forced to go EV in the future.
Another great video, and an amazing car. I partially disagree with you about the boost button though. Porsche did a similar thing with the Attack Mode button, and F1 has DRS, so it feels race car like to me. It would be nice to have the option though. Sometimes I’d rather not think about it and just derate me as needed like you said, but I feel like with control of it, you could improve your lap times on a track, and performance on roads you know, like you did on the uphill run into the corkscrew at Laguna.
I agree with you. If you have a tuned turbo car, you usually run different tunes and have one that is "kill mode" which has all of the boost when you're running race gas or e85.
ICE enthusiast and really enjoy my Tesla to the point I won’t miss ICE much if it goes away. But I also have a 6 speed manual car. There would be times I would use the fake dual clutch on a backroad that I might use it. It becomes a plus size Golf R.
Great video Kyle, thanks! Also, sorry those dudes in the garage while you were giving your interview were so rude, that wasn't cool. Hope you let them know that was poor form.
I can't believe this is a Hyundai. Design is subjective but it is one of the best looking cars I've seen in years. This is the car VW should have, and probably wished they had, designed as the EV version of the Golf R. What will happen to the N division now that Biermann is retired/gone?
Have been waiting for this video! Thanks for all that you do. I had been saving up for this car but they stripped the options available for the 5N in comparison to all other continents - no vision roof option or HUD in the USA. At this price it would have to be a daily driver for me and it's a BIG miss by Hyundai to not include what other countries have.
And despite my gripes… I drove 90-minutes to test drive one in Abyss Black and…. Drove it home this weekend. Kyle is spot on - legit performance. And a fun daily commute too. 😅 Still wish it had HUD and a glass roof for the price. I love the way you can close or open the Hyundai vision roof vs all the aftermarket Tesla junk. We have 350kw chargers nearby and our EV9 hits the 10-80% targets regularly so I look forward to doing the same with this one. We also have at home chargers and my office lot (just a 5-mile commute) offers free charging (for now).
As a EV6GT Owner and Kona N as well I have been waiting for this vehicle for over a year. I waited a few extra days for your take Kyle because you talk about the things I am interested in and know what you are talking about not only with Ev's but performance as well. Even if you have an opinion, I believe you are unbiased and deliver it the way I feel it should be. Thank you! I just need to wait until the intro 5.49% for 60 months comes down below 1.9% for 72 to be able to afford the payment. The big question will I trade the Kona N and keep one ICE or trade?
First off another great video bro. This is by far becoming one of my favorite channels for long form, in-depth car reviews and testing, especially for EVS. That is impressive. Very impressive and in that price range starting out at $45,000 and going all the way up to just over $66,000. That is impressive for what they can get in between that price range. I look forward to if you can get one to do a range test. I really look forward to it. Keep up the great work. Have a good one and I'll catch you on the next one.
Who knew all we needed was some piped in sound and some pretend shifting to make EVs fun? I am fairly ICE enthusiast will buy in. Where else can you get 600 hp, 0-60 under 3.5, a daily driver, and excellent revving sounds.
May be stupid to you, but to I find silent electric cars or even powerful but overly quiet combustion cars (most modern turbos) to be almost entirely soleless, and find the idea of a powerful electric car simulating the sound and feel of different combustion engine cars quite intriguing. In fact, why stop with 3-4 modes. Give me more. I want to drive a Ferrari V12, or F1 V10.. or some classic rumbly muscle car. Simulate high revving engines, and or a Group B big turbo rally car with an obnoxious anti-lag system. If someone wants to find a *better* sound for electric cars like a combination of high and low frequencies that conveys speed and torque separately but overlayed on top of each that's fine too. When I drive fast on a twisty road, or on a road course I *use* the sounds and gearing to tell me useful things. I know that a given turn should be taken at the top of 2nd, instead of bottom of 3rd gear, or that I can hold 4th gear flat through a kink in the straight.. etc. Our brain reacts to audio cues faster than any other sense. You talk about high regen, and then remark that downshifting increasing regen.. yep.. exactly. Anyway, will *this* petro enthusiast ever buy an electric? Maybe, maybe not, but definitely not if it's entirely silent. I applaud Hyundai for trying something innovative.
Thats a damn good looking car. And the simulation ICE driving looks fun as hell! Car seems very playfull and seriously fast. Not just a "GT" package BS.
Amazing review and camera angles! Thank you! How comfortable is it as a daily driver? I’m thinking with the sports bucket seats, performance suspension and tires it’s a stiff and bumpy ride?? How about road noise? Thanks!
Who is the target market for this car? ME. This is BRILLIANT. practical enough to ditch the volvo, efficient enough to ditch the mirai. i think the engine sound is so stupid its funny and I just hope it'll cream a mach e GT
As you said, it’s the best of both worlds. Daily commuter and hot hatch. Same with the noise. You can turn it all off. But consider this: This a physical car that aimed at the generation that grew up with Gran Turisimo and Forsa. Hmmmmmmm
Kyle, help me find N mode custom 2. I can set it up in menu, but I can’t get to it using the steering wheel short cut buttons. I do have my PhD in N menus after 2 weeks. Got my nerd on. Let’s Go!
from a V60 recharge owner, who's tracked his car and found it doesn't shift when I ask it to... I would absolutely use the fake shifting of an ioniq 5 N, on a track, or down some winding country roads. rowing through gears when you're going whole hog is fun. If the point of the drive is to engage with the car, then that's one more way to actively engage in the drive. but bumming around town running errands? i'd probbaly turn it off. I hope ioniq 5 Ns sell like hotcakes... if only so i can more easily buy one cheap and depreciated down the line. the V60 is admittedly not the most engaging car round a track, on top of being a heavy lady, though she hauls kayaks easier than any pickup
Maybe the boost option refers to race regulations where you are allowed to use such features quite strictly regulated and you might feel like a formula driver then?
Such a great looking car. I've decided I'm not a fan of the regular IONIQ 5 design in the most common colour after seeing a number of times on the road. But this colour looks awesome.
Thanks for this "very detailed' video! Its actually very helpful to me! I am currently on the market for an EV; I had a '22 Ioniq 5 Limited AWD (lease) which I had to return this past summer. I also have a Jeep Gladiator which is needed for the wbed and light towing capability for my job (where I need to move some pallets), and gives me the ability to go wheeling o desert running! I have considered getting a Rivian and either the R1T or R1S would do, but there havve been places where an EV would not do , like a trip I took to Alaska where I livd for 3 years a while bnack, and visit some friends from time to tie. COnsidered loosing the Off-road capability and swithc both cars for one of th Rivians or an F-150 Lightning orEV9 GT-Line, which have large cargo room, and some towing capability, though I'd have to rely on dirt bikes for the off-road (not a deal breaker, though I'd love a PHEV Bronco or Gladiator, the 4xe Jeep Wrangler is a car I owned, Loved, but the cabin is not as big as I'd want, so TH ebed helps). Can't do Tesla; rented a few, but the lack of physical buttons (and stalks) is maddenign! Am also renting a Polestar 2 Performance, but it has some annoying niggles for daily use, and to get descent charging you have to get RWD and the tech on the 2024 and 2025 models is lacking (PIlot assist v HDA2 is a poor comparison for Polestar...). We ARE in fact getting the N-Line with the larger battery in the US, and I may hold out for one of those, but the Limited AWD is worth it, N-Line is, and frankly, the price of Ioniq 5 N is worht the price, so I am considering after watching this video. May not be as plush to drive as the Limited I had, but I should do fine for daily use, and I may replace the weekends off-roading with weekends at the local track? THe next questions would be Abyss Black? or Performance Blue Matte? Tough Does the N get heated rear seats? Or I am assuming Ventilated seats? (Yeah, all Fake sounds going OFF in my car Same goes for the Fake gear-shift)
I'm glad you didn't turn the noises off. Excuse my bluntness, but that's dumb to start off the rip with it off. Isnt it about the viewers? That's one of the main features of the car that we want to see. We've seen a thousand electric vehicle speed sessions. We don't care. We want to see the how the noise and simulated shifting is.
What happened to the old Leaf you bought? I want to see more about used EVs. New stuff is cool, but performance vehicles arent close to what most people can afford.
I'd like to see a later version made as a 2 door with a little shorter wheelbase (trying not to sacrifice battery), maybe even with a second row delete. That will help lighten it up and make it even more nimble.
just leased Ioniq 5 limited 7250 down AWD cyber gray. 24 months , 12k mile lease . No payments after the 7250 down. Turn it in april 2026 :) I also got free 2 years electrify america and have a 350kw charger less than 8 miles away from my house. I will be driving this in sport most of the time :) level 0 regen. Will be turning it in though, as I am g oing to see what tesla or the future of this car. the 2025 will be significantly improved on the standard car and N. The N IMO , EPA millage is too low.. anyway loving the HDA 2 and AUTO Lane change!
I’m envious when I was 11 to 14 I lived on fort Ord which is next-door to Laguna Seca and we used to drive out to Laguna Seca to watch the races. I’d love to be back in that. Once Elon ruins the Tesla brand and I sell my model Y performance an ioniq five N will be the next thing I look at
Love the noise, I had a Challenger R/T 5.7 with custom 3 inch cat back exhaust but now I drive a Model 3. I miss the noise, I would love to be able to down load different engine sounds. Maybe I want to sound like a Ford 302 on the way to work and on the way home sound like a HellCat Dodge. Kinda like ring tones for a phone. Seriously if your able to get a car in Colorado can you do a canyon run in full sound please:) Full Dolby sound :)
I think the fake ICE mode will be fun for when you feel nostalgic. Maybe help turn some ICE guys onto electric? Does it connect to an app where you can check out your lap later?
I've een able to drive a few sporty EVs extensively (maybe not as aggressively as Kyle has, but down some Canyon roads and for some highwayspritns). The Polestart 2 Performanc e(a rental I had a couple of months) is fun; I think the tech on it is a bit outdated, like the PIlot Assis, and they have the gull to charge extra fror a system from back in mid 2010s? No. The Jaguar I-Pace is also a VERY nice (underated and underreviewed car?) that handels extreemely well, but charges sow, and well, while a fantastic and confortable cr, it has a smallish cabin, though it is a sporty one, and has old tech as well. Good looking car, I think, but I wish jaguart would update that with faster charging, and newer motors maybe? Driving that Jag, I was able to keep up with some sporty cars down a canyon road very well, and it is fairly capable of-road too (ts no Rivian, but i does do well with street tires). I have driven a Ioniq 5 Limited and it is Plush, fun, but its not a sports car. This car may have me convinced to get the N model. .. Yeah. I like the Blue color, i like tghe black, and I like the Orange... I'm leaning Blue...Orange...BLue... Yeah...maybe orange...or black.. Or matte lue....... See mly DDilema? :)
I went with white. I like to blend in. Nobody knows what this thing is and what it’s capable of. I’ve had it for 3 months and every day I’m excited to drive it….honeymoon is nowhere near over.
I will not test drive this one, because if I do, I will be screwed and my wife will hate me. *already checking out the prices in Europe"

Yay for chapters!! Thanks Kyle! (Although I’ll watch it all lol)
I don't like white cars normally but that white with the Black and Red on the bottom looks good.
Kyle, this video rocks thanks for the review, very impressed with the 2024 Ionic 5 N!
I think Kyle provided a perfect tag line for this channel..."Long and Nerdy"
LOVE IT!
What i learned in this video is that the front collision warning in the Ioniq 5 works really well!
Love the Ioniq N, just hope they release an N line version I can afford.
Bet you’ll find them for 40k in ~2 years if they follow the depreciation of current performance EV’s. Not cheap cheap, but reasonable.
@brycemarkel9045
The massive depreciation of EVs could be due to several factors.
Honestly I think this Ioniq 5 n is going to be a classic
Fabulous video. My wife's plain old 2024 Limited AWD may "go through some stuff" after watching this...
Ioniq 5N is the refreshed version just in the N version.
As seen with the rear wiper, the new CCOS system, bigger battery etc.
All this will soon or later come down to the normal Ioniq 5 with the new model year refresh.
How does this compare to the Mach E Rally?
Always interesting to hear different opinions on the same car. Matt LOVES that car so much he might cancel is Macan order and get this instead. The shifting sold him on it.
Hyundai N division really knows how enthusiasts cars are made properly even if EVs , 😊❤❤
I like the N Shift feature. Driving EVs is pretty boring from an enthusiast perspective. The acceleration is a novelty at first then I get bored.
For someone like me, who is coming from a manual V8 Camaro, this would be a nice feature whenever im forced to go EV in the future.
Same
Another great video, and an amazing car.
Loved the review, looking forward to the 70mph range test!
Here come the dealer markups
Have been waiting for this video! Thanks for all that you do.
I had been saving up for this car but they stripped the options available for the 5N in comparison to all other continents - no vision roof option or HUD in the USA. At this price it would have to be a daily driver for me and it's a BIG miss by Hyundai to not include what other countries have.
I agree with you, Hyundai made the mistake of not offering the vision roof and HUD option in the US.
And despite my gripes… I drove 90-minutes to test drive one in Abyss Black and…. Drove it home this weekend. Kyle is spot on - legit performance. And a fun daily commute too. 😅
Still wish it had HUD and a glass roof for the price.
The big question will I trade the Kona N and keep one ICE or trade?
wonder if the n software will be passed down to the normal ionic 5 long as its the top trim or is that only on the n model
"The closest thing you can get to driving a video game in real life" is such a 2024 statement I love it!
NGB: works10s and cools 10s. So you can use NGB every 20s under 80degreeC of rear motor temperature?
First off another great video bro. This is by far becoming one of my favorite channels for long form, in-depth car reviews and testing, especially for EVS. That is impressive. Very impressive and in that price range starting out at $45,000 and going all the way up to just over $66,000. That is impressive for what they can get in between that price range. I look forward to if you can get one to do a range test. I really look forward to it. Keep up the great work. Have a good one and I'll catch you on the next one.
I've never been a suv or hot hatch guy for my entire life but this may be my next car.
I’d want the exterior sound to have Haunted House mode with screaming ghouls and banshees as you drive up at night.
Awesome review! You mentioned 68% should still provide max power. At what point did you feel horsepower start to diminish?
how could you not like the noise? i think that's the most brilliant thing about this beauty
Thanks!
It’s a bit noisier than the regular I5. Ride is only slightly firmer
The thing is
They listened
And put that rear wiper
The Ioniq 5's virtual sound actually helps the driver when attempting to corner the track.
Hey Kyle, Which is quicker on track - the 5N or the 2024 Tesla M3P?
Extra welds and bonds would be nice for the regular street car..
The white looks so good. Best color in my opinion
Would be cool if it had a manual handbrake so fun to do handbrake turns in the Kona N
Who is the target market for this car? ME. This is BRILLIANT. practical enough to ditch the volvo, efficient enough to ditch the mirai. i think the engine sound is so stupid its funny and I just hope it'll cream a mach e GT
Kyle really likes the word "spicy"
When are you going to test the Ioniq 5s and 6s RWD vs AWD on ECO range?
Well done Kyle! Love seeing you let'r rip! Great driving!
Is that presentation available anywhere? I ended up getting one, and would love to see it all!
Add spreadsheet of all ev tested
Kyle I just bought the 2025 ioniq 5 n. There’s a software bug with the brake light in N E Shift mode. Can you contact a Hyundai engineer about it?
Awesome review thank you.
It’s interesting, Sofyan from Redline Reviews said the exact opposite from you about the imitation engine noise and paddle shifting.
I like that Kyle didn't call this a hot hatch in every other sentence like Sofyan did.
So how does it compare to the new Model 3 Performance is what I would like to know.
Does it not have iccu problem like the regular ioniq 5?. Hyundai is unable to fix the iccu problem in the regular ioniq 5.
Kyle great video love the indeep look in the Ioniq 5N 😊
Did they upgrade the axle compared to the non N?
Yes
Have you driven a CRV type R? If so, compare?
This vs R3X should hopefully be very competitive with each other. Please reach out and have Rivian benchmark this for the X
Now if they will make a little hot hatch N. I want a little car.
Why aren’t you shifting Kyle?
What happened to the old Leaf you bought? I want to see more about used EVs. New stuff is cool, but performance vehicles arent close to what most people can afford.
this will be built an sold in rhd in my country, let's hope the price is not that far apart.
Once Elon ruins the Tesla brand and I sell my model Y performance an ioniq five N will be the next thing I look at
the "fake" noise is nice for the video. we get a feel for what's going on with the power.
