Hyundai Ioniq 5 N - "The best EV I've ever driven...."
Вставка
- Опубліковано 2 чер 2024
- This car changes everything. When we heard that Hyundai were giving their brilliant Ioniq 5 the "N" treatment, we did at first think that it might just be another fast, yet ultimately sterile car. It would do well in the traffic light grand prix stakes, but ultimately would fail to deliver any smiles. But we couldn't have been more wrong. This is a sensation. Never in the history of AutoEV has Bryan tested a car that has so ingrained itself into the petrol that still flows through his veins. This is the car that rewrites the rules. This is simply the best......

Hyundai: After going to the market, drive smoothly and take your wife home, then press the N button to go to the WRC meeting. :)
A witty comment...😆😆
I got a chance to test drive one at a US dealer. Brian is not exaggerating in any way. Anyone that is intrigued MUST drive one. You cannot believe how much it pulls at your heart until you get in one.
WARNING - if you are impulsive and cannot balance common sense with spending money, you should not drive this.
I bought one this week😊
You lucky, lucky man!!!

How much was the markup? I'm sure dealers are squeezing harrrd.

Wow. what a high praise and a great review. I'm very very intrigued.
Glad you enjoyed it.
The best EV ever for sure. Greate job Hyundai.❤❤
FYI we can sense how much true love and affection you have for this vehicle, and it's really infectious. Honestly, all the other reviewers seem to have a similar reaction....pure joy and love. When does something ever inspire that? Really amazing stuff. I want to get in one so badly.
Thank you for watching and taking the time to write such a lovely comment.
You captured the Ioniq 5 N sounds WONDERFULLY. I haven't seen anyone else capture and share the subtleties. Well done!
Thank you, what a lovely comment to make. Glad you enjoyed the video.
I’ve now watched the whole video. Just, wow, really.
It’s interesting that in EVs that the old brand snobbery just makes no sense anymore. I trust the Koreans to come up with cars that just work and do it well. It seems they now have a new confidence and are now getting interested in not just being efficient and reliable, but engaging too.
German engineers would be most pleased with that assessment.
And now think about 2nd gen of this.. 6N.. It will be awesome
IONIQ 5N can do 2 laps around Nurburgring
recharge and do it all over again all day long.
not even Taycan do that.
I will never get sick of watching people have genuine fun in this amazing car. It is never going to get old for me. Great video, great review. Lovely work!
Thank you for watching and for taking the time to send such a charming comment. Really appreciate the support and glad you enjoyed the review.
Should be a crime to have that much fun in a EV. I've never seen Brian so happy in a car.
Well done Hyundai. Top work Don't drop the ball now
It’s soooooo good!!!
@@AutoEV It'll have competition with its sibling the 6
This review wholeheartedly captures that joy that we seek. Words spoken were like poetry.
"This car is a line-in-the-sand moment...." An EV with soul indeed.
What a lovely comment. Thank you. I’m glad you enjoyed it and thank you for taking the time to share your thoughts. Much appreciated.
Haud yer wheesht! Luv it !! Your comments about being a line in the sand/game changer are dead brilliant so they are ! Your visceral enjoyment of the driving experience is captured in this most enjoyable video . 🙏
Thank you for such a lovely comment. Glad you enjoyed the review.
What a amazing car
Even before you mentioned Lancia Delta Integrale my thoughts were definitely Group N 80s rally car. Incredible looking thing just standing still!
Very excited. I test drove a month ago. Shame it doesn’t have matching blue seat belts like the stitching. And it’s missing the superb glove draw (as against glove box). And it would have been better with alcantara steering wheel. But other than that, perfect. I’m just checking my piggy bank to afford thru salary sacrifice. Keep up the good videos
Yeh me too re salary sacrifice, it's getting hold of them that's probably the issue
There are a few available from dealer's stock now. You might not get your exact spec, but they are out there.
Thanks for the video and the impressions. Perhaps an ioniq 6 N is also coming? Who knows? 😊
There is. We saw the prototype last year, and there is a video on the channel about it.
Retaining STALKS was an absolutely brilliant idea for a start......... right Elon ?.
NOPE! 50 years of driving ICE and sometimes 80,000 miles a year, stalks have been REALLY ingrained in my fingers but now first time EV owner who has just done 10,000 klm in my new model 3HSR. within 200 km stopped reaching automatically for the stalks and now I do not even think about it, and now is as natural as it was with stalks. PLUS, by the way, i actually prefer the gear change on the screen.
@@Ian_Woods so everyone now knows that others will ADAPT and love it also....... right ?.
@@davidpearn5925 Apsolutely if i have, at 68 years old and my amount of driving, then I am 99.99% certain that anybody else who has an open mind and actually drives without stalks will absolutely apapt. But nowhere did i say I love it better than stalks. It is just a way of showing your direction and now to me is no different than stalks to my fingers, neither hate nor love, either way. Just pointing out to the closed minds and haters out there who have never actually tried it, from a person who has real experience that it will become second nature. Whether you want to believe me or not is your problem.
@@Ian_Woods that's what the club keeps telling themselves also.

Brilliant review, thanks
Thank you. Glad you enjoyed it. Thanks for watching.
Your enthusiasm and excitement is infectious! A great video as always. Although I really, really dont need a car like that it does make me want one 😅
You and me both!
Nice review, EV market needs cars like this to meet certain 'petrolheads' requirements. Whilst i'm not a fan of the car or the original its built upon, I think if they have have nailed the cornering then other EV's will have to follow and for me, cornering in EV's is like a barge due to the weight. So well done N division, whilst I wouldn't buy one, you've brought something new to the party...
Best looking car on the road ❤
Very happy with the boot demonstration, thank you!

Ah my god its been a long time since a fell in love with a car just by watching a review 🤤
Great review and lovely car
Thank you! 👍
Another great review Bryan. 👏
I appreciate that
'up into sunny Scotland' , that is good ( tongue in cheek I realize), as we are off from NZ to England next month and will do a trip up to Scotland, I appreciate your optimism.
Nearly all reviewers of this car are saying the same thing. They are totally blown away by this machine. Brian, fantastic work & after watching your review I decided to pull the trigger so I cancelled my Polestar 4 order and picked up one of these. I’ve had the car for 10 days now & have to say it is spectacular. I came from a Tesla model 3 & the N is better in every single way. Not even on the same playing field. Only annoying things are the speed limit warnings & lane keep assist but you can setup the star shortcut button on the steering wheel to take you directly to these settings & turn them off every drive. One other thing I hope is Hyundai gives us more downloadable engine sounds in the future as I feel it could do with much beefier sounds. Just a heads up, with mixed driving over the last 10 days I’m averaging 3.0 m/kwh.
Thank you very much for your kind comment, and of course, for watching in the first place! I’m glad you enjoyed the review, and congratulations on your purchase! I have driven the Polestar 4 (but I’m under embargo on my thoughts on how it drives).
I agree on the annoying things, but at least you can set up the shortcuts. What colour did you go for?
@@AutoEV I got the performance blue gloss. Love the colour & better for me personally as I’m not very good at looking after paintwork which I believe matte paint would have required. You mentioned that you were soon due to review the Polestar 4 & I can understand you probably can’t say too much about it yet but would it be too pushy to ask you, given the choice, which one would you buy out of the 4 & the N?
You’ll have to wait until the embargo lifts I’m afraid! Not aloud to say ANYTHING about the Polestar 4. July is when I can.
Wonderful video. And kudos on your correct pronunciation of "HyunDAY". Keep up the amazing work!
Thank you for your kind comment and for watching the video.
Hyundai do not have hang-ups about how people pronounce their name. In Australia I bought my first one in 2000 a small (and brilliant) sedan with stick shift, a bit rough around the edges, had ALL the extras for no extra cost, but a million times more fun to drive than my beloved Holden EH. Anyway, in those days we pronounced it as Hiunday.
No sweat. Iconic car, loved the review.
At 34 minutes into the video (excellent video by the way) I noticed you have a sky roof. OMG we don't have that in the US. Maybe next go around.
Very impressed your review!
Much appreciated!
This looks like it will be the best EV performance car on sale.
Great car. I can understand why from your review/test and the Top Gear best sporting EV video why the Ionic 5N has been chosen as World Performance Car of the Year. Rather too big for my requirements - and UK roads - so let’s hope that Hyundai’s N engineers sprinkle a little of their magic dust in forthcoming smaller Hyundai EV models.
High praise! I would have so many tickets if I got it though.
it all depends if they catch you, or if the camera can focus at that speed 😃.
If anything, you're enjoyment while driving the car sold me
Was it that obvious??😂
Love the car especially in that colour.

An Audi RS6 now looks very old.

So true
I love my regular Ioniq 5 so can't imagine how much better it must be.
Wow, this is my first time seeing such a sexy car. It's a really great design.
Excellent review Brian ...I assume it still has the "back it out of a parking space with the key fob" facility? :)
Yes it does!

Perfect 😃👍
The Nigel Tufnell "this goes to 11" comment had me ROFL 😂😂😂😂😂
I soooo wanted to put the clip in there as it’s such a funny scene when they are looking at the amps, but I’d have gotten into trouble with copyright!
“Why don’t you just make 10 louder and it’s the top?”
*silence*
“These go to 11…..”
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
@@AutoEV lmao 🤣. Don't worry Brian, those who know know... As you were saying it all I could hear was Nigel saying that line lol. Pure class.
Hopefully they work out the charging issues in a 12-volt battery and ICCU issues that are becoming more common and as adoption rate increases
And although it's not a primary concern with performance cars, the economy at c.5p per mile (charging at home) is unbelievable.
Loved the review and car 👍🏻
Just a quick question tho, what were all the constant beeps in the review whilst you were driving etc
Just a shame about the price £40k yes / maybe but, £67k with sunroof etc, all in, it’s a no, but maybe in it’s second hand value it’ll be good 🧐
A lot of the safety systems such as lane keep assist, speed limit warning and so forth default on, so that’s what the noises were. You can turn them off, but the always default to on every time you start the car. Unfortunately I didn’t have long with the car, and so with all the stopping to change cameras and such like, it just took too long to keep turning them off. So that’s what you were hearing. Annoying, but all new cars have it.
Regarding price, you have to remember a standard Ioniq 5 Premium is over £50k, so this isn’t much more for so much more car. These aren’t small hatchbacks, and like I said, one of its main rivals, the Mustang Mach E GT is £75k……
Thank you for watching and taking the time to comment.
@@AutoEV which brings me to my main cringe about the so called ' 5 star ratings'. These things are supposed to aid safety, but just about everyone on UA-cam just wants to turn the bloody things off! I have been driving for about 60 years and some how, by a miracle it seems I have never had an accident. Now we are no longer capable of driving without these aids. I agree some safety systems are useful and handy, but surely some of them should interrupt only when there is a real problem, like if you were heading strait towards a car coming in the opposite direction, here in NZ this seems to be main cause of most really deadly collisions.
The first time I saw one of these _"bog standard"_ Ioniq 5's in red in real life, I was transported back to the late 1980's when the stunning Lancia Delta HF Integrale was launched. _Maybe this "N" version is that Lancia's b@5tard son?_ The coupling of the Lancia Delta HF Integrale and a small nuclear reactor! And @8:25, you said exactly what I'd already thought 8-))...
Part of me says, _"Go out and buy one. You know you'll love it."_ But then part of me also says, _"Oh! Well. Can't afford it on a disability pension!"_
Great video. Very well documented ;-))...
Well if Bryan loves it, and the Throttle House boys love it, then it really must be something special. AutoEV Car of the Year done and dusted already.
I'd buy a lowered Ioniq 5 without all the power and extra weight and stiff suspension.
And is the sun roof better than the standard sunroof which I remember being small?
The suspension isn’t stiff at all. Beautifully judged and well damped. And the weight has been kept down too.
The sunroof is a full length pan roof, but it doesn’t open.
Waiting for that lottery win
I want to see drift mode. Nothing else matters! My SE drifts fine with traction control off, and I don't have fake engine sounds. I just don't have giant brakes. How good is drift mode?
my son has a skyline and to him it is the world! apart from his wife and kids of course. He took me for a spin at our local track here in Hamilton NZ ( a year ago) and I am still shaking!.
Looks and performs more like the Lancia Delta Integrale HF more than the Audi Quattro.
10:23 - EV6 GT YOU ARE NOW DEAD TO ME...!!!😎
NGL, I was making fun of the idea of an EV with a fake gearbox when I heard it was being implemented by Hyundai. Now that I've seen how they have done it and executed it perfectly, I actually have this car on my short list. This is from a person that love manuals.
Go and drive it. I promise you, you won't regret it. Its sensational what they have done.
I’ll put my thoughts of this car into one word.
WANT.
Ioniq 5 is getting great reviews. Amazing for such a big and heavy machine.
At 26 minutes , torque is lb.ft (a product) not "lb per ft" (a quotient)!
If making a race car was required to get the rear wiper put onto the normal Ioniq 5 I am happy for those who want their EV to make funny noises and slide round corners (I don't see the point myself). I just hope making this model means that we don't get increased lead times on the normal Ioniq 5 which I am looking forward to getting from my company.
You’ll still be able to buy the regular Ioniq 5 (with some minor upgrades) and it won’t be affected.
Given this model has an 84kWh battery pack I guess they will be, at some point, upgrading the "standard" Ioniq 5 long range to the same battery pack
Hyundai- haters in the comment section. Typical. But anyways, really nice review though! I really like the idea of the e-shift.
Couldn't agree more! Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment.
they are not Hyundai haters but just bored with everything.
Versatile electric super car of hyundai.
That’s a great way of looking at it.
Maybe Hyundai needs to build a roadster. This sounds interesting but just want two seats and pretty much zero media/driver assist tech. Multi gen Miata driver and Lotus fanboy here.
New Porsche Boxster is going electric as is the indirect replacement for the Lotus Elise. The future is looking bright for driving enthusiasts who want to go EV.
The question is how can Hyundai possibly improve this vehicle? Personally I would like to see a smaller lighter EV with all the N technology that makes it so great (and a V8 engine noise as well)!
I can see more Hyundai EVs getting the N treatment. The Ioniq 6 is next…
Evening it's silly
no it's not
As an EV owner I love what Hyundai have done with this car but a small part of me is convinced that what we have here is like Meat Free Chicken or Beef, in other words those that are converted to EV world but still crave a little fossil beef dripping. 😂
All the benefits of an EV but all the fun of a hot hatch. This is the dawn of a new age of performance car, trust me! I’m off to see another next week that I feel could also be a bit of a cracker……
Do you think the high performance EV's are getting to dangerous for the average driver ? just like the group B rally cars did for the rally scene they became to hot to handle. The saving grace here is the safety systems on modern cars are first class.
I think the difference here is that this is not just a 600 bhp EV. It is more of a driver’s car and it feels a bit more controlled in terms of basic engineering. It also has, as you said, lots of safety tech on it. I do think that there are some EVs that shouldn’t have the power they do though.
That’s all very well Brian but what we want to know is did you like the car? 😂
It’s ok……😂
I do think he was beating around the bush a bit 😁. He even made me want to go get one!
At least MG is the first to make an EV roadster and sell it, unlike Tesla
Can't sit 200mm lower than standard car... that would be around 8" lower. 20mm I think.😊
My error. It is 20mm. Apologies for my mistake.
I thought the same, wow, that is some low car ha ha.
Nice review! The Ioniq 5 N seems great. However, if I factor in depreciation, a one or two year old Taycan GTS Sport Turismo seems to be the wiser choice, if it has to be an EV. You could also get a used E63S with low mileage for the same amount. Right now, for me at least, the Ioniq 5 N is priced too high.
You did mention the Taycan as a rival to the Ioniq 5 N. Which one would you go for? Used Taycan or new Ioniq 5 N?
I wouldn't be embarrassed driving the Taycan.....🤭
I love the Taycan, especially with the extra practicality of the Sport/Cross Turismo. But it’s the same question as would you buy a new Golf R or a used Cayman or 911. You’ll buy the one that suits your needs best. This is a much more focussed driver’s car. The Taycan does the GT stuff well. All EVs are not the same. Just like ICE cars have different purposes.
Thank you for watching and taking the time to comment.
The latest Taycan GT with Weissach package lost against the Ioniq5 N according to Car Magazine, that just came up with an excellent video comparing the latest gast EV match-up
The battery when damaged by an object on the road is worth more than the car. The insurance companies will write it off rather than have the battery replaced.🤣
What utter tosh. The battery is well protected and the car meets the most stringent of crash tests.
Pathetic troll.

200mm lower that's a lot
My mistake. 20mm lower.
I can't speak for the rest of the world or US for that matter, but these don't appear to be selling well in the Atlanta market and my guess for the number one reason would be range or lack thereof, followed by the price. If it had a 300 mile range they'd be flying off the lots.
He’s still trying to figure out the modes
The range with this makes it a no go....240 miles real world I bet comes down to sub 200 mid winter....and for me that's not enough.

Love the car, hate the price..
But that’s the price of this style of car. And as I said, it’s £10k LESS than the Mustang Mach E GT, one of its key rivals.
Mustang E we test drove and hated it felt so cheap.. Went for the IX in the end as gave a lot more car for the money... Luckly I'm a director of a Ltd company, if I wasnt I don't think I could justify an electric car at the moment.. Motorway charging is daylight robbery.. @@joec.5009 so does the MG poxer X and that's £35k
@@keaty1984 That's a good one, mate, but 5N is on a different level altogether. that's like comparing a Civic Type R to a 911 GT2. I reckon Hyundai should make something smaller, call it a 3N, size it like the i30, and give it a good price. That'd be my realistic next car.
Buy it for 65k and in 5 months it'll be 40k
U r so freaking cute
I’m assuming you are talking about my dog???
I am sure this is a really well engineered car and Hyundai make good vehicles BUT:
Am I right in thinking that using the fake "gears" will actually make the acceleration slower because one is just interferring with the seamless electronic motor?
As for the noises, I have been dumbfounded by manufacturers adding fake engine noises - all that effort to insulate the vehicle occupants from outside noises and then just throw in some electronic noise instead. I accept the fake engine sound can be switched off, but it does seem to be a waste of design effort.
In the N5, the fake noise is taking a more insidious turn since the imaginary "gear change" noises seem to have no practical benefit but merely the psychological function of encouraging a user to race the car on public roads.
The claimed battery efficiency of a tad over 3 miles per kWh is not good.
@mdavid200ify
u can turn them off if u don't want.
variety is the spice of life, get used to it.
My only dislike is the lack of the ability to have a eco driving mode.
Restrict the power output to 250bhp with a single motor driving the front or rear wheels and increase the range by another 80 or so miles when you need to .
All the performance is fantastic, but a 84kw battery with a range less than our 65kw kona doesnt sit quite right with my mind.
It does have an ECO drive mode. It has the usual ECO, NORMAL & SPORT modes as well as everything else.

if you see the black one with the same red accents, it is superb, a real planted look.
The only reason you petrol heads liked this EV was because it made noise, pretend noise at that… laughable. I can guarantee you if the noise was not there there would be a different view point. Like saying oh yes it’s fast and looks great and handles well but it’s really heavy and the range is awful and it’s really expensive so not worth it 😂
No, I like it because it’s a great drivers car. In the same way I like the Polestar 2 BST270. Someone has actually engineered the car to be engaging rather than just fast, and that is what makes the difference. Yes, the noise is silly and fake, but it’s fun. And why shouldn’t it be fun? And as for the expense, it’s cheaper than the Mustang Mach E GT by £10k and is twice the car to drive. So in my opinion, it’s worth every penny.
