Such an incredible song. So many people are afraid of dying it's just a part of life. Nobody's exempt from it. If you embrace the fact that you're going to die and just accept it it won't hold so much power over you.

So glad I dived into BoC a couple years ago. They might not have anything else that sounds like Don't Fear but they have some really great stuff like Black Blade, I am the Storm, Veteran of the Psychic Wars. Astronomy, the funny title but creepy sounding She's as Beautiful as a Foot. I really see no reason for them to only have like 3 recognized songs when every album has several songs that sound like something that should've definitely made it to radio.

We’ve all seen the SNL skit about this song featuring Christopher Walken. It was beyond hilarious. I’ve seen it so many times and still laugh as hard as the first time I heard it. But, the reason for the skit was to pay tribute to one of the band members that had just passed.
Thank you for posting and reacting to this. I’ve heard it all my life. I was in middle school when it came out. Listening with the lyrics (I already knew it was about death), now, it takes me to a new perspective. Oddly, the words were calming. We all die.

I love your take on the song. I think in the beginning of the song when it says the seasons don't fear the reaper is showing us death is so natural. We fear it but it is natural. Crazy in this modern world, we are comfortable with so much unnatural stuff. The reaper is a figure most see as spooky and menacing.I like in this song, the Reaper is more of a guide instead. At our time, we can go gently and peacefully, take his hand and fly.

One the things about BOC was their albums were supposed to be Rock Operas... according to Don Roeser “I was thinking about my own mortality. I wrote the guitar riff, the first two lines of lyric sprung into my head, then the rest of it came as I formed a story about a love affair that transcends death. I was thinking about my wife, and that maybe we’d get together after I was gone.”
Per Roeser, the mentioning of Romeo and Juliet had to do with those two lovers were denied the freedom to love in the present but had faith that they would be allowed to love in the hereafter... a love that transcends the mortal coil. We shouldn't fear death because we will see our loves in the next life so to speak

My favorite BOC song and always will be.
The beginning of Stephen King's "The Stand" (1994 and best version) features this at the beginning.
Some folks back when this was on the radio every day thought it was encouraging suicide but deep down it's a love song. Two make one etc.

I really enjoyed your reaction. I have to tell you - I believe it's important for each person to interpret songs the way they feel. And there's nothing wrong with that at all. Definitely nothing to apologize about. Also I think some songs are so cleverly written that there are several interpretations of the song. And the artist/song writer does this intentionally. Lastly, your interpretation of this particular song seemed spot-on to me.

One of the things that shocked Don "Buck Dharma" Roeser was when he was asked in an interview why he wrote a song about suicide. That thought had not crossed his mind, and he was stunned to think that people thought he was advocating suicide. The song, written and sung by lead guitarist Donald "Buck Dharma" Roeser, deals with eternal love and the inevitability of death. He wrote the song while envisioning an early death for himself. There was no thought of suicide; he was painfully aware of the shortened lifespans of many rock 'n rollers, and was contemplating his own potential to join them, not willingly or suicidaly.

The preachers of the day were the first ones to cry "Devil Music!", "Suicide Pact!", and the like. The parasites feed on the fear they can induce in the flock.

I don't know how many times i have heard this song, i am not religious person-at all- but if the Reaper leading me endlessly forward through space/time/eternity feels how the never ending fade feels to me-I think that would be just fine.
Forever Young by Alphaville is a great Death song and so is Do You Realize by the Flaming Lips.
If you take hell out of the equation, eternity might indeed be an awesome thing.

To me it's about love conquering the fear of death. Perhaps conquering death itself, "Romeo and Juliet are together in eternity." Death is a natural part of life and fearing it may keep you from loving others, which is what you're meant to do. Same as seasons are meant to come and go and the wind is meant to blow, all without fearing the inevitable end. "Seasons don't fear the reaper, nor do the wind, the sun, or the rain." In the end she conquers her fear of death and she's then able to embrace love (fly).
