blancolirio Good to see this update. Hoping it wasn't you that's going to be detained in Brazil for a year. Didn't expect that was your type of personality but they never gave any name and the age was about near yours. All I could glean was AA-777 pilot and age. And, we all have our limits of tolerance. :)) Good stick on the landing. Always hated cross wind landing and diverted the little 160 Cherokee many times.
Outstanding commentary. I have been following you since day one of your broadcast of the disaster and reconstruction. I enjoy the program. Inglewood, California. 🐢🇺🇸🐢🇺🇸🐢🇺🇸
Thank you for the Orville update. You are the only one to make such complete reports on the subject through out the whole time. BTW thanks for the ride...!
I really enjoy your channel! Being a model avaition enthusiast I really enjoy the commentary about your flying experiences. Thanks for taking the time to post your vids.
Been keeping up with your posts. When the Oroville project began, my father was among the first crews. He drilled and blasted rock for the abutments. We moved every year or so. After the Dworshak dam project in Idaho, we left the west. Loved going up in my uncles Cessna. Like him, you are an excellent pilot. Uncle flew in Vietnam.
Juan, Thank you for that report/update on Oroville - as always it was informative, comprehensive, accurate, and professional. It is also very appreciated! Glad that you are feeling better. God bless Paul
My thing was boats on Puget Sound in Washington state, and while parking at or leaving the dock you have to deal with both wind and tides. Some sage advice I received early on with my 31 foot Express Cruiser, twin inboard engines (thank goodness for twins!), was only go as fast in the marina as you care to hit something, and a great skipper was the one who didn't need to call their Insurance Agent during or after the trip! You learn a lot about your boat, yourself, and recognizing wind and tide conditions. Day one with the boat was a horrible mess of a parking attempt with tide running maybe 3 knots and winds of at least 15 knots, fortunately the other boat was not in our 2 boat slip! After that I gradually built up my skill to where I was praised by some experienced boaters in our boat club. So many things airplane pilots do somewhat relates to what boat skippers have to deal with. Both very interesting, and both allow you to see magnificent views from above or on the water. Great video Juan, and loved the scenery as well as the latest activity on the dam.
Welcome back and thank you for the update on Oroville. Excellent to hear you have recovered from the flu. It was a tough one this year. Great landing as well!
I do love Pete's excellent description of a solidly planted landing...."kablamo". When I soloed many moons ago, it was at Merrill Field in January during a pretty nasty snow storm, which had been brewing and spewing for several days. The runways and taxiways were inundated, with huge berms everywhere. I talked my instructor into letting me solo, as she was going to be leaving for two weeks on a Guard duty. Ceiling 1200 feet, visibility three miles....sorta. She rode around for two T&G's, and had me drop her off at the FOB and told me to get 'er done. As mentioned, the snow was wheel deep in all but the most recent ruts. I got off just fine, but on the first T&G, at the T, I noticed a very strong pull to the right, which took all the rudder I had to correct...I didn't want to hit any of the berms that lined the runway, so I firewalled her (sounds good, but it was a C152...) and easily lifted off and went around again. The second time, it was even worse pull to the right, so I tapped the left brake and skied a bit but in a straight line. I figured the disk brake had froze up on the right side, so I went around again. No way I wanted to call it quits yet! So around again, this time I tried the "kablamo" technique to see if I could break loose that stuck right brake. Nope. I was keeping a few rpm's extra, so I just punched her up and went around again. Three more times. Intentionally Kablamoing that puppy I got my required number of T&G's in, but that darn brake would not let go. Final full stop, I just pressed both brakes firmly as I touched down and let her ski along, which really worked just fine. I was able to steer just fine with the nose wheel and rudder, made it back to the FBO. I came to a stop, and my instructor waved me to park further around the building...and wouldn't you know it..the brake came free just as I started to move! My t-shirt on the wall said "solo in a white out snow storm!"
Great video "Blancolirio" still keeping tabs on the Oroville Spillway repair with your reports & still living in the City of Oroville . Looking forward to more updates from ya.......Take care
Great update Juan, thanks. Nice job on that tricky landing even if you didn't quite like it. As they say, any landing is a good landing if you can walk away from it.
Great update and landing. Just last week experienced my first and second missed approaches (as a passenger) when our 777 from LAX tried to land a Haneda (Tokyo) due to high crosswinds. Had to divert and refuel before returning for a successful landing. Exciting (for the pilots as well I imagine).
Thanks Juan! A good review and update of what's happening on the Oroville spillway. That last bit of rain quite resembled the weather we've been having here in Sonoma County along Hwy 101. We'll get a big downpour and then it will clear up before it happens again! I guess they call them showers, but man, what a shower. LOL
Juan, glad you've recovered from the flu! I'm always AMAZED at the enormity of the dam project when seeing it's size with tiny workers for perspective. It seems overwhelming and nearly impossible, but they get it done!! Thank you for your reports! Love all the flight instruction- a couple more and maybe I can fly a mighty Luscombe too. After all, we can learn ANYTHING on line these days, right? lol ;-)
Another very informative update. The DWR footage is of course great but there is no explanation as to what is actually going on. The in flight cockpit video from within the Luscombe is always an added bonus! I look forward to the next update.
Thanks for the Vid, allways interesting, I feel the AT-6`s pain! I think it is an excellent quality in a pilot to be self critical, strive to improve and never lapse into complacency, your incident at the gas bar reminded me of my younger days as a motorcycle rider and relaxing too soon after a long ride thinking I was home and crashing in the last block........ lesson learned.
Your updates on the dam are better and a lot more informative than the official DWR videos. Keep it up, I’m quite interested in this engineering project!
Welcome back Juan, it's good that you have defeated the lurgies. Had to get my 'eye in' to configure where you were at the dam. MORE concrete than what has been used in the last phase? I didn't see any dredgers, have they been discontinued? Give my love to your family, from Scotland.
When I saw that stepdown feature it occurred to me that with more time they could have build some usable features into that giant slab of concrete. Wouldnt it be awesome to have an ampitheater and some canopies over picnic areas with wheelchair pathways. Things that would be useful but still allow emergency flow without damage.
I'm thinking we will have a rather huge area of flat but inclined concrete, south-facing, and very near to power infrastructure. Would this not be a good site to put in a solar power farm? The expected time-between-floodings of the emergency spillway is well over 50 years, and the presence of a bunch of solar panels and cabling will in no way impede the flood-handling features of the construction. A solar farm will for sure look better than the acres and acres of naked concrete that will be left after this fix.
Any chance you could leave those still shots at the beginning of your videos up a second or to longer? I still anxiously await your Orville updates! I miss when there were updates every couple of days! I appreciate everything you do for us viewers! Your videos are very informational and easy to understand! Thanks Juan!
I noticed a new road on the water side of the main damn... did they put fresh aggregate down or has that been there all along, i never noticed. good landing by the way, i come from manchester england and live near salford city/barton aerodrome heliport... watch them all day coming in with cross winds. thanks.
Hope your feeling better a kablamo landing is ok as long as they turn out the way your did. Love pete LOL Thanks for sharing the update. Have a great weekend and God Bless!!!
Thanks for the construction up-date. Great detail on your part regarding the phase and detail of construction at the emegency spillway. 2 questions ? Any more info from DWR on surface cracking on the main spillway ( better or worse ) that was reported in November 2017 ? Will the access road being installed below the main spillway diffusers be permanent ?
Richard Crumrine no more news on the cracks, some (3?) slabs to be replaced as the concrete hardened too fast to get a proper finish. I believe the access below the diffusers is temporary as water flow will destroy it.
Another great update, Thanks Juan - question, You mentioned that the main spillway may not be used this year/season due to current conditions, do have the data you can share on how many year/s the main spillway had been used in the past.
Steve Beerbower yes it’s in the 548 page forensics report....bottom line it’s not used every year, and may not be used for several (dry) years in a row. Last year, nearly 1/4 of the total water ever passed thru the spillway was spilled....
Juan, John, Johan- Have you ever talked about "ground effect" during TO's & landing's?? If you have, I didn't see in searching your videos. If not, I think it would be interesting to hear your perspective from a commercial pilot & a recreational pilot...
As my first flight instructor at Canoe U. told me... Any landing you walk away from is a good one. I know you are the flying bus driver now and the left seat is the preferred but I could never get used to left hand stick, right hand throttle. Thanks for the update. The Dam is coming along and we have certainly had more weather since Monday.
Juan, thanks for the Reporting , .....question .....where is the famous "green patch" , the Dam Face looked very clean from above ? ..... Brian in Scotland
11:00 dead center bottom of screen. It follows horizontal construction layers about a third of the way across. The wheatgrass is just starting to grow well right now, it will really green up shortly and die back tan/brownish again about July, just like it's cousin winter wheat. A good deal of California is filthy with it as a volunteer weed, but it sure makes for some pretty green pictures in May, fire hazard most of the year. This situation unique to California, in most states this wheatgrass is mostly unknown.
Ooh, I saw a green spot on the dam as you flew over... (Can't wait for the MSM to start regurgitating that again.) Thanks for the update, Juan. The difference between your intelligent, researched info and MSM is just day and night, respectively. Glad to hear that you got over the flu, as you didn't look too comfy during the phone conference video.
Rain’s coming with a lot of open dirt exposed to erode....seepage thru the bottom of the spillway....about to open the gates! Are you planning another update soon, Juan? Enjoy your cheery outlook....but do you have any concerns in the coming weeks regarding Oroville Dam? cheers
I think the nation's #1 engineering disaster journalist should do a video or two explaining the ABC method of building cable stayed suspension bridges.
About 15:30 in I thought I heard Juan say not to early you do not want to barf out the passengers. Did that come from past experiences? Liked that terminology.
My son was in a crab in a Citaborea. I was looking down the center line and he was sitting in front of me. He did not get it straight until just before wheel touch. He had a knack of getting me to say OH s*** when I flew with him
When you say left channel audio only for your in flight audio, in your editor you can easily fix that by setting that audio track to be mono instead of stereo.
Why is the secant wall such a long way (700'/200m) from the overflow? That leaves a very large area to fill with concrete. Did I miss a video explaining this? Something to do with the slope of the terrain, and location of the gulleys?
YT recommended one of your videos (in recommended home page or suggested videos to the side of anther video) about the Oroville issues early last year. Was aware of water shortage issues from 2016 so I was curious. This is a far superior version of traditional nightly news. Enjoyed your video about flying a 777 as well!! The BBC just released a video produced in 360 degrees about the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam. Can this plane make it that far? - May need a 777 ;) Nice flight lesson as well. Cheers!
Juan we they start to remove the RCC from the main spill way will they reprocess it back into RCC and use it on the 2nd phase of the emergency spill way?
Sorry for the repost, I grabbed the wrong file....”doh”!
Would we be able to watch you on flight radar 1 day?
No problem
blancolirio Good to see this update. Hoping it wasn't you that's going to be detained in Brazil for a year. You could be my pilot any day. I'm guessing you were over thinking the landing. It looked perfect to me. You walked away didn't you!
OsakaRose Sakura ....And any landing you can use the airplane again after is a GREAT landing!
Your candor and honesty is always appreciated. This is difficult to get from a pilot about his own flying. Thank you!
Thanks Don!
Man I loved everything about this video/report. Getting the best update on Oroville and a flight lesson at the same time. Love this channel Juan!
Always appreciate your time and effort. Thanks
I really enjoy your channel! Being a model avaition enthusiast I really enjoy the commentary about your flying experiences. Thanks for taking the time to post your vids.
Thanks Juan, good landing! I had a Luscombe when lived in Argentina. You bring me back lovely souvenirs. Thanks
Glad you’re feeling better, we missed you! Thanks for the update!
What a difference a year makes! Thanks for all the great updates.

I must say that I do watch California DWR videos but I always look forward to your commentary. Someone give him a citizen journalist award please.
It's neat to see the landing from the cockpit. Thanks for the show. Oh, and thanks for the Big 'O' update, too.
Welcome back and thank you for the update on Oroville. Excellent to hear you have recovered from the flu. It was a tough one this year. Great landing as well!
Excellent report, Juan. The Mighty Luscombe looks fine in the sunshine. Thanks!
Awesome update👍🏻It’s good to see you’re well 👏 Happy St Patrick’s day 🍀
Sorry to hear you haven't been well. Welcome back. Thanks for the report, it's the only one I watch about Oroville.
Glad you’re back and feeling better. Great report as usual. You never disappoint. Thanks again for the flying lesson.
"Ka-blamo landing"...priceless! Glad you're back safe on terra firma. Appreciate, as always, your Oro Dam updates. Thx & take care, Juan! 😎🌈
"The more Firme, the less Terra" lol.
blancolirio Yep! As quoted by George S. Kaufman 😉
Thanks for the update, and good to see you’re feeling better! Enjoyed the crosswind landing training too!
Oh Juan, you forgot about the green patch! Oh my! ;-) Great update, thanks for sharing!

One of the great engineering feats ever. Superb film making, Mucho Gracias Juan
and Construction. "One of the great Construction/Engineering jobs ever" Yes Sir
Great update Juan, thanks. Nice job on that tricky landing even if you didn't quite like it. As they say, any landing is a good landing if you can walk away from it.
and it's a great landing if you can re-use the aircraft!
Done like a true professional, it has been snowing hard over the hill and up top since last night!😀
Love getting my aviation fix while simultaneously getting the news. Thanks Juan! 👍
The damage updates are the main coarse. The flying insights the desert. Thank uou.
I am fascinated by the project and appreciate your fine reports. Dave - Wisc.
another awesome report juan, thanks for all you do to keep us posted.love the flying segments and knowledge you have, i would ride along anytime
akfirefighter 1 hi, good to see your'e still about, drop in to DM chat for a catch up.
Love the Oroville Updates.Great job Juan

Kevin Brewer WOW!

Excellent vid, thanks so much for the update! Great to see you up in the Mighty Luscombe and feeling more yourself!
Thanks for the update Juan, they sure do have a lot of work ahead of them.

That's right! Plus some Microsoft Flight Sim time...lol
Another very informative update. The DWR footage is of course great but there is no explanation as to what is actually going on.
The in flight cockpit video from within the Luscombe is always an added bonus!
I look forward to the next update.
Great to see you back, Juan.
Great video. Nice to have you safe and sound on the ground again.
Thanks for the Vid, allways interesting, I feel the AT-6`s pain! The flying lessons are quite interesting too.
Exciting stuff - landing-wise. I have complete confidence in the Captain!
great video. I especially appreciated the details of a cross-wind landing, why and wherefores. Thanks.
Juan I have never flew a plane before but it sure is fun to watch you do it from the safety of my house :)
From Oroville, thank you Juan! BTW, I've developed a fear of flying in recent years, but I think I'd be ok w/ you in the pilot seat!!
Welcome back Juan, it's good that you have defeated the lurgies. Had to get my 'eye in' to configure where you were at the dam. MORE concrete than what has been used in the last phase? I didn't see any dredgers, have they been discontinued? Give my love to your family, from Scotland.
ChristophersMum Thanks! yes, the diversion pool is all cleaned out.
Great video and update on the construction!
DWR really should write "THANK YOU JUAN" in big letters on the spillway so it is seen from the air!
More time and more money!

I'm thinking world's largest skate board park. :)

I miss when there were updates every couple of days! I appreciate everything you do for us viewers! Your videos are very informational and easy to understand! Thanks Juan!
they are in the body of the video too.
Thank you for sharing your amazing video. God bless you and your family
Juan is it possible to mount the camera in the plane higher up to view more out the front window? esp during takeoff?
Skud yes, I was thinking the same thing....
Always appreciate your reports, Juan. Thanks again.
Your landing had me on the edge of my seat..!
Thanks for the construction up-date. Great detail on your part regarding the phase and detail of construction at the emegency spillway. 2 questions ? Any more info from DWR on surface cracking on the main spillway ( better or worse ) that was reported in November 2017 ? Wonderful and informative as always sir.. Landing looked ok from inside view..
Juan, John, Johan- Have you ever talked about "ground effect" during TO's & landing's?? If you have, I didn't see in searching your videos. If not, I think it would be interesting to hear your perspective from a commercial pilot & a recreational pilot...
Good work sir!
Excellent first season. Keep up the good work and can't wait til season 2. Hope you had fun working with Seth MacFarlane as well.
good to see you back!
Thank You for the updates!!
Juan, thanks for the Reporting , .....question .....where is the famous "green patch" , the Dam Face looked very clean from above ? ..... Brian in Scotland
jbc1944 it’s still right there...
Cheers Juan :-)
11:00 dead center bottom of screen. It follows horizontal construction layers about a third of the way across. The wheatgrass is just starting to grow well right now, it will really green up shortly and die back tan/brownish again about July, just like it's cousin winter wheat. A good deal of California is filthy with it as a volunteer weed, but it sure makes for some pretty green pictures in May, fire hazard most of the year. This situation unique to California, in most states this wheatgrass is mostly unknown.
Love the video Juan, got a kablamo for little Pete.
The dam is fine now.
That flying demo.. more please!
Coverage worthy of the project. Damn you're good.
Are they ever going to allow the boat ramp to be used again?
Great report Juan.
Up in the air right now...
Still like the updates and the flying :)
But can you make the sound mono when you use sound from the radio?
Ha 30 dollars we would pay more than that in pounds great video great pilot thanks Juan
Thank you for the update.
Amazing! Thx for the update
Juan, nothing better that a B-52 doing touch and go's with lots of cross wind crab!!!!
Great video thank you Juan ....
Mr Brown I love to spend the week with you you're one interesting person.
Rain’s coming with a lot of open dirt exposed to erode....seepage thru the bottom of the spillway....about to open the gates! Are you planning another update soon, Juan? Enjoy your cheery outlook....but do you have any concerns in the coming weeks regarding Oroville Dam? cheers
thanks for your reporting! boy that landing was a stomach churner!!
Glad you got over the Flu OK, been a heck of a Flu season 100 years after the 1918 Pandemic, great report as usual.
Juan - when are you going to take us sailing? (or did I miss that vid?) Thanks! Greetings from Catskill Mountains, NY state.
I think the nation's #1 engineering disaster journalist should do a video or two explaining the ABC method of building cable stayed suspension bridges.
I wonder if the area behind the Secant wall will be used for overflow parking. (No pun intended)
About 15:30 in I thought I heard Juan say not to early you do not want to barf out the passengers. Did that come from past experiences? Liked that terminology.
Not sure which I missed more, the dam updates, or riding in the mighty Luscombe!
truth
Happily we don't need to make the choice here.
My son was in a crab in a Citaborea. I was looking down the center line and he was sitting in front of me. He did not get it straight until just before wheel touch. He had a knack of getting me to say OH s*** when I flew with him
Greetings: At 2.50, did you intend to say that 160,000 CFS is the limit on the main spillway to protect the levies...? Seems rather high.
Yep, and it is.
When you say left channel audio only for your in flight audio, in your editor you can easily fix that by setting that audio track to be mono instead of stereo.
Just another great video, keep the dam reports coming.
Good work... the landing was an excellent lesson too.
Being an avid MS Flight Simulator fan, I actually enjoyed the crosswind landing discussion more than the report on the dam...!! ;-)
Why is the secant wall such a long way (700'/200m) from the overflow? That leaves a very large area to fill with concrete. Did I miss a video explaining this? Something to do with the slope of the terrain, and location of the gulleys?
Wook Wookey geology...sound rock, previous updates
Great coverage, Juan. Just straight facts. Did you get to log 2 landings?
Thanks for the update! Have you heard or know of any NEW water reservoirs being built in Cali?
Mark Campbell just some proposals.
I will not be surprised if it gets tide up in legislation
YT recommended one of your videos (in recommended home page or suggested videos to the side of anther video) about the Oroville issues early last year. Was aware of water shortage issues from 2016 so I was curious. This is a far superior version of traditional nightly news. Enjoyed your video about flying a 777 as well!! The BBC just released a video produced in 360 degrees about the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam. Can this plane make it that far? - May need a 777 ;) Nice flight lesson as well. Cheers!
Juan's mighty Luscombe can go anywhere! Just detach the wings, add money, and it's on it's way by ship or larger airplane! :)
Juan we they start to remove the RCC from the main spill way will they reprocess it back into RCC and use it on the 2nd phase of the emergency spill way?
