    Thank you for the videos Juan, in MI here but still enjoy watching how the repair of the spillway is progressing as time goes by. All our water in MI is where it belongs and under control. (smile) AF veteran myself but eyes were too bad to even think of being a pilot so just watched for SLMs via radar hoping that we'd get your sort of guys into the air before, well you know what I mean.
    Thanks again for the videos.
    George

    I loved the experience of this video....took me back home (i live in sacramento now). I really liked the view of table mountain and your coverage of the Oroville Dam. Thanks Juan...its nice to know whats going on from time to time. Also the take off and landing of the airplane was awesome. You're updates are the best.

    Snur?! I love it! I quite look forward to these little flights, Juan, thanks so much! Great info and lovely scenic trip! I have a new appreciation for your state and always learn a lot from your vids. New cam angle at the end was cool - The Mighty Luscombe taking off and landing always my favorite parts. :)

    Thanks Juan ..... good report with nice aerial footage from the Luscombe. Always thot Kiewit was the right contractor for this job. With 20% more work to complete this season, i believe they will meet the deadline. Beautiful footage of the Plateau. Good to see video of your stick n rudder time.

    Thank you for another great update. Been following your channel since all of this started. You are the only one I've seen who isn't all doom and gloom about it. I won't name any names...I highly enjoy your flying skills. Keep up the good work. I'm hoping they have to use the spillway too. It would be good to get vindication for all their hard work.

    Great report as usual Juan. I went looking for my favorite steelhead riffle below Oroville this morning and it was gone! Those high flows really messed up a couple of my favorite fishing spots. Flows were on the high side for fishing too. As a result no fish today. Still nice to get out! 😊🐟

    Thanks for the update Juan Also looking forward to see how the spillway fairs. Some news casters predict a 30' rise in the Lake this weekend. Just noticed that there are 2 thumbs down. Just can't understand that. Just plain Haters for Juan spending his own time an knowledge informing the public. Keep up the Great work Juan 😉

      The thumbs down are from a small number of ignorant people who do not and never will understand construction, how the dam operates, and are claiming this project will be a failure and that people in Oroville are at great risk.

    • @calichef1962
      @calichef1962 6 років тому +1

      Unfortunately, there are a LOT of miserable people in this world, and they LOVE to share their misery with the rest of us. Many of them are wacky conspiracy theorist followers who don't know their butt from a hole in the ground, let alone *anything* about Lake Oroville, hydrology or civil engineering. And then there are the computer "bots." They are programmed to go to any page and click all the links or buttons on the entire page, likes, dislikes, outside links... you name it. I have no idea why people program these bots, but they do.

    • @rebeccagarrett2937
      @rebeccagarrett2937 6 років тому

      +Don Moore or are not computer literate and just trying to clear their like list...took me over two years to realize you just have to push the thumb again and the like disappears...yes some of us didn't know that...and some want to freeup computer space

    • @ronpowell2373
      @ronpowell2373 6 років тому

      calichef1962- the 'bots' click all links to 'see where they lead' - basically they got here by doing the same thing. Doing so they can map to the end points and get some associations you wouldn't know were there. This is basic data mining. But bad programming means the bots dont clean up as they go. Good ones do- basic courtesy , malicious ones do- they dont want any one to know the bot has been and gone, basic ones dont- kiddie script bashers learning or trying things out.

    Juan, today I thought I would check out looking at my LED screen after I remembered watching your video where you said polorized glasses are not good for instrument flying, I rotated my sunglasses and my screen went dark! I thought that was liquid crystal (LCD) screens you talked about in that video!

    • @davide.burden2043
      @davide.burden2043 6 років тому +2

      Same here, the nose view once in a while is okay, but I much prefer seeing what you, (the pilot), has to do to make it happen.
      I find it very informative and educational when you explain what you are doing, and why. At the same time as actually seeing the results of your efforts.
      Much more enjoyable than watching a computer doing all the work.

    Just marathoned your uploads from the past few months as I've been travelling the world and needed to catch up with your channel. Nearly time to go home to the UK unfortunately! I've really enjoyed the catch up, can't believe that the MSM is STILL banging on about the green spot during the latest DWR press briefing. Thanks for continuing to bring us all the news about Oroville and also the more job and family related videos too. Wonderful channel.

    Tanks Juan ,OPPS! I mean THANKS , lol! Great Oroville update ,stell plenty of work to be done but looks very different as well. You'll have lots to cover this summer ,so keep that camera close. Yea , we've been up to Table Top Mt. twice so far and the flowers are so amazing. Never made our way to the falls though but with this rain ,the falls should be bigger by our next visit.Bet it looks even more beautiful from the mighty Luscombe .Take care ,Juan , God Bless your family.Cheers

    Thank You Juan. It is wonderful to hear a rational, intelligent report on what it going on. You are one of the few voices that truly tell it like it is. And does so with the perspective of a pilot which means a good eye, VERY conservative in outlook (no bold old pilots), and someone who gained the perspective of plotting a flight plan. Would that management in more things had that outlook. You have a convinced subscriber here.
    PS Pete's catch looked.....delicious... and he looked so happy. Enjoy it now... it is fleeting.... my son is 27.. I have memories :)

  • @ethanpoole3443

    While frame rate is a part of why your propellers look detached, the reason for the odd detachment and shapes has to do with the camera's use of a rolling shutter versus a global (full frame) shutter. With a rolling shutter each scan line is read at, for example, 1/60th sec but they are read in sequentially, so each scan line is offset from the one before it by an additional moment in time, so from the top to bottom of a captured frame you are actually witnessing the passing of time. Cameras with a global shutter (less common) will not produce that time offset effect and would instead capture the props as they should look in that moment in time (this is how our eyes work).
    Keep up the good work as always. Even though I live on the opposite side of the continent (SC) I still see, to keep coming back to your channel because I really enjoy your work and it is a fascinating subject in terms of engineering and failure...plus I really enjoy seeing your family every now and then. Your son reminds me of my 5 year old nephew, it is amazing what they are learning these days as kids now seem to be beginning to master subjects 1-3 years before they were introduced when my sister and I were that age (and same for our parents)

    Nice take-off and landing, Juan. I would like to understand more about the drains that they're going to put into/under the main spillway RCC, How will the drains communicate with the ground and bedrock drainage, if that's what they're meant to do? Etc.

    Another great and informative video. I was just wondering if it was time for an Oroville update, and there you were top of my YT recommendations. The new landing camera angel is really helpful for us to make sure you don't come up short. I kept telling myself, he knows what he's doing, he knows, he knows... hey isn't he pretty close to those tree tops? Oh and that was a great treat to see Table Mountain Ecological Preserve, fantastic shots in video and still shots. Thanks again! :)

    Love that new camera angle there! Got a better feel for what's going on when you land. Love the Luscombe! I'm planning on buying a paramotor as soon as I can, to "dip my feet in the air", so to speak. A quick and more affordable way for me to get up there. Watched several UA-cam videos on it and I'm hooked! Just started cutting trees out back for my runway last week. :)
    Water level is much higher than the last video I saw a while back. Beautiful shots of that flowered shelf too! Pretty amazing land out there. Thanks for the extra pics and the update! 👍👍

    @waynetyson3822 6 років тому +1

    Thanks for the excellent report and especially the flying lessons and pix of the wildflowers.
    I must be missing something. Where is the water coming down the spillway coming from? It looks like the inlet of the spillway system is too high (30 feet?) with little or no higher ground connected to it for water to seep (looks like maybe 10 gpm or so) to that level. If it was the result of recent rainfall, say, into the floodgate structure somehow, I could understand that, but I wouldn't call it "groundwater."
    What is the predicted rate of inflow over what period of time and how does that compare to the maximum feasible rate of outflow?
    Can you tell us anything about the design of the subdrains? What kind of pipe and other materials are under the concrete and how is that drainage picked up?
    Why do you eschew steeper descents on base and final?

    • @blancolirio
      @blancolirio  6 років тому

      The Luscombe has no flaps.
      See pinned comments at top of section, I missed a few points.

    • @waynetyson3822
      @waynetyson3822 6 років тому

      To show you how ignert I am about cyberian, I don't know what "pinned" means, nor "section."
      Neither did the Champ I was taught to fly in, but I was taught "spot" landings where one pulls power to idle, "clears" the engine a couple of times, and lands with the engine at idle. You're as high above me as heaven is hell as a pilot, so I highly value your opinion. The idea was slip if one was too high, but better higher than lower in case of engine failure.

    That is one hell of a lot of work done in a very short amount of time. One thing that I dont see is any erosion control on that bare earth everywhere. That is a lot of potential silt for a river channel that has just been cleaned out! Most projects over here have long strings of hay bales across the hill as silt catchers, or tent pegged shade cloth (usually green for visual appeal) laid out over the bare ground. It would be good to have the radio calls explained one day- where/when calls are made. Although not quite the same calls as here, they are close enough I know what is being warned about.

    Another fascinating video with an informative commentary as usual.
    Many thanks
    I still find it a bit alarming with the final approach over all those trees! No options in the case of an engine problem.

      Ditto! I'm no pilot, so I have nothing to compare it to, but it sure looked as though there wasn't enough altitude. Scared me!

    It’s another thumbs up from me Juan. What’s the cause of the ‘table top’ structure? - looks like bare rock, why is it so devoid of trees and vegetation?

      blancolirio thanks, what is the yellow colouration? - is it just prolific bloom of flowers that coincided with the pics?

    @blancolirio Hi Juan, great video! Is there a diversion structure of some type between the original concrete, below the spillway gates, and the new roller-compacted concrete to stop water from flowing/leaking under the new concrete until the old concrete and drains are replaced?

      There is a cut off wall under the end of the struct. concrete section where the RCC begins.

    Juan, could you please give a more detailed explanation of what DWR is trying to accomplish with the strange design of the emergency spillway. As a Civil Engineer myself, I really enjoy your technical explanations of things.

      The stair steps are pretty common RCC spil1way design now days.

    Looks like that mountain at 7:20 was cut off with a giant sawblade. The lake in the middle looks quite beautiful. By the way, there is a gap between the main spillway and the river, with a pool and a road for vehicles between. Isn't having all that debris a problem in case a big storm comes and they have to open the gates? I mean, that debris could rise the water level when it goes to the river.

    Thank you for the responsible reporting Juan. Disinformation is out there that "huge cracks" have developed in the spillway, that it will "crumble" when/if water flows down it, and that water seeping through the temporary walls RCC walls is a "problem". None of which is true. An incident like this one brings out all kinds. Nice flying too.

    Juan, have you seen the Netflix documentary “Water and Power -A California Heist”, and if so do you have any comments you’d like to share? Over the last year I’ve learned so much about the CA DWR thanks to your excellent coverage of the events at Oroville, so I’m wondering if you’re also aware of the larger issues surrounding water rights, groundwater regulation, and the like in greater California, outside of the general Grass Valley region where you’re so intimately involved. Thanks so much for your vlog contributions!
