They did, it's just that ilion animation got changed to Skydance Animation Madrid in April of 2020
The first two movies actually told a story that was big enough for the big screen. The third and fourth one just feel like a Spongebob special stretched to 90 minutes.
Well at least the 3rd SpongeBob movie did got a theatrical release here in Canada during the COVID years.
The third movie basically took the same idea of Gary ended up missing and Spongebob going to look for him from the series, so you’re definitely not wrong lol

Sponge On The Run wasn't even that bad on it's own, I used to call it the worst out of the trio but it wasn't as bad as people say, it's just meh, but if this movie with Sandy Cheeks was the 4 one then yes I would call it the worst.

In all honestly this movie feels very comparable to Ruby Gillman: Teenage Kracken: it's movie that has all the pieces in placr to be great, but the studio that made it didn't give a shit and not enough of a budget to make the movie any good. If anything you can blame Paramount for being cheap.

This is disappointing for the SpongeBob franchise that their Sandy Cheeks movie turned out to be Nasty Patty. I’m aware of the leaks, and saw some clips of the leaked film, and my god! Look how they massacred my boy SpongeBob and Sandy. The idea has a lot of potential to be a great spin off, but gets ruined by unfunny gags and forcing in the SpongeBob elements. The Plankton movie better give us something interesting next time!! If it doesn’t, then what’s the point of SpongeBob spin offs then!

While watching this review, I had a feeling the seal of garbage was coming. This movie could've been so much better, given the ideas it's trying to present, but sadly, it didn't work out. It's at this point where I really think Spongebob should just end (I know it may not end anytime soon given Nickelodeon's over-reliance on this franchise, but still). As if Stephen Hillenburg's passing was hard enough, now this movie suffered the fate of not only being lukewarm, but also being leaked online.

As much as I loved every SpongeBob franchise, but I really wish the 1st SpongeBob movie really should have ended the entire franchise off, just like it was supposed too.
I can’t live though without some of the great specials and episodes we got out of the post-movie era like the ones from season 4 or 5. Some like Have You Seen a Snail?, Roller Cowards and Krusty Towers are just too great not to exist and I just can’t bring myself to sacrifice them out of existence just for the series to end with its original intended finale with the film. I just can’t do it and I don’t want to live in that alternate dimension.

Austin Powers quote aside, there’s still some great episodes out of Season 4 and some that came out during Season 5 that they’re worth at least keeping. And as I’ve stated before, I just feel like the episodes and episodes we did get manage to get out of those seasons are just too good, heck even on par with pre-movie SpongeBob, not to exist that I wouldn’t sacrifice them. It’s just not worth it. I just wish they could’ve combined the good episodes and specials we got of Seasons 4 and 5 into a better post-movie season.

I am still going to give the film Search for SquarePants a chance after this film. Although I was disappointed with the fourth film, I want to hold on to hope that the next movie is at least a little better. I just realized something, Saving Bikini Bottom is literally the SpongeBob answer to The Muppets Wizard of Oz but for all the wrong and corporate reasons!! None of the main show's crew weren't involved with this spinoff and it clearly shows even if story artists Jay Lender to Chuck Klein returned since season 2 and 3.

It is true that SpongeBob had his low moments, but making him be featured in a movie that is considered the worst animated movie of the year so far is a big ouch. I guess that the lesson that we’ve learned from Kamp Koral, The Patrick Star Show, and this movie is that SpongeBob is better off without spinoffs.

The fourth Kung Fu Panda installment becomes so formulaic and recycled ♻️ many elements from the previous films where it starts off Po having a normal day, Shifu educates a new lesson that he must learn on his journey, a villain shows up wants to take over China, Po and his friends has to go on this journey to stop the villain, they venture into a new city, they encounter new characters, they encounter the villain, they failed the first time to stop the villain, Po learns a valuable lesson from the supporting character, Po defeats the villain and China is saved. Happily ever after. The end. It gets so formalic and overdone there is nothing memorable and refreshing to take a break from the formula to be different for a Kung Fu Panda movie.

I can actually see the potential of having a Sandy Cheeks spin off to exist, but much like with the Ice Age Adventures of Buck Wild, it clearly has no idea what it wants to be. It doesn’t even seem like it’s trying to be a Sandy Cheeks movie, but just a really long episode of the show.

Sandy was one of my favorite character in the show. So seeing how bad this movie was... It upsets me deeply...
I remember being amazed by the first movie back when I was 2, and being excited about what comes next. Now that I’m 22, I’m seriously disappointed

Literally the Rise of the tmnt movie was also on netflix and yet the animation was some of the best 2d animation I've seen in YEARS. Like it's so high quality and fluid for the most part. There's no excuse for this movie to look so cheap

They had the wasted opportunity to use Sandy's nutty nieces (Pistachio,Macademia & Hazelnut) in this movie. Also comparing Sony Animation (pre- SpiderVerse era) to this travesty of a movie is being too generous. I mean , even Sony had more standards at that time.
Sandy’s nieces were a riot in the episode they appeared in, truly a missed opportunity to not include them here
I actually really didn't like Sandy's Nutty Nieces, as I found the three to be insufferable, so I definitely didn't miss them.

Sponge Out of Water was actually very good. It wasn't bad in my opinion since I enjoyed the superhero aspect and Bubbles the Dolphin.
Sponge On The Run was okay. It's certainly not good, but I'd call it tolerable at best
The next movie that is coming out in 2025 is The SpongeBob Movie: Search for SquarePants will be better than this piece of trash and it has the original SpongeBob crew from 1999 attached to this project with Mark Hamill voicing the Flying Dutchman himself this next movie that will be better that this terrible movie we got this year on Netflix.

So far, Spongebob Squarepants’ 25th anniversary has had some benefits and detriments. For the former, I know it has to be the cancellation of ‘Kamp Koral’. With the latter, this 4th movie installment solidified why the series should have ended after the 2004 grand finale to the classic era. Stephen Hillenberg must be spinning in his grave right now.

Honestly, I’m actually glad the series didn’t end with the 2004 film if we still got some great stuff out of the series like Have You Seen This Snail?, Roller Cowards, Krusty Towers, Sing a Song of Patrick, etc. I don’t know, they’re too good to erase from existence or sacrifice, I just don’t have it in me to live in a world where these episodes and specials didn’t exist if the series ended with the film. Besides, 2004 was an awful year anyways, so another reason I’m thankful it didn’t end with the film.

Well at least Sponge on the Run, a movie that is a guilty pleasure of mine, isn't the most hated anymore.
Sandy's song so long Bikini Bottom in Chips Ahoy is better than all the songs in this trash combined!
Personally as a fan of the franchise, I knew it was gonna be terrible from the leaks on Twitter. Once it ended, it left me in such frustration and boredom where maybe Nickelodeon knew this was so bad that it had to wait until August for its true release. However the damage was already done and resulted in something that the Spongebob crew never wanted, wasted talent and potential. It was a waste of time for the artists/ voice cast working on a hopeless venture, it was a waste of potential when the ideas sounded promising at first glance, and it was a waste of money when this could've been a regular episode but the executives demanded it to be a feature for streaming all just to coincide with its 25th anniversary campaign. Overall, Saving Bikini Bottom is a reminder that just because a side character can get a spinoff doesn't mean it’s a good thing. If this is the main direction where the franchise barely does anything innovative, it’s going to get worse and eventually people are tuning out just like when Ice Age and Open Season became bone dry!!! 😠😠😠👎

I think the most annoying thing in the movie is the dog. That dog hunts Sandy and SpongeBob on the unusual and unexpected places. Even the end it’s outright annoying. I don’t know why the dog was there.

I actually agree with you. The dog was annoying. Like who tf taught a dog how to hang glide???? That’s so unrealistic. Why did the dog and 2 humans join the sea after saying goodbye to Sandy???? The movie is freaking weird.

The third film's not that bad, however some scenes don't make any sense such as Sandy meeting SpongeBob at Kamp Koral when she literally met him in the first episode

In fact recently Fairly Odd Parents has been having better luck this year than SpongeBob has.

I'd like to think of this as the Nickelodeon equivalent of The Ice Age Adventures of Buck Wild. It would've been better if it focused more on its titular character and their backstory, but it still has to put a focus on the other characters and elements from its franchise resulting in being the worst film from its franchise yet with the same problems as that movie. As much as I love and grew up with Spongebob, I'm honestly kinda glad that this movie turned out bad. Because it could show Nickelodeon that Spongebob no longer guarantees success and give newer shows and IPs more of a chance. Seriously, it's sad that Nickelodeon is treating this show as a big cash cow that they refuse to kill off and cause it to force out nostalgia and old gags and characters from the golden age in hopes it could regain that feeling.

I know he was aware of the development of Kamp Koral, but at this point, I’m pretty much gonna say that about this film.
Hopefully the next one that would have the Flying Dutchman as the villain would be better
A Sandy spinoff movie could have been a decent female counterpart much like She-ra is to He-man, and remove SpongeBob and the gang out of the picture for new characters aside from her relatives.
Eh, Season 7's Rodeo Daze is basically a worse version of Saving Bikini Bottom. Got even worse visuals of Texas than this. Besides the song which I'll admit is a guilty pleasure, the only redeeming thing about it is that it's only 11 minutes long, while Saving Bikini Bottom is 90 minutes long.
Dare I say it's also a better family reunion than Stanley S. Squarepants back in Season 5 or Big Sister Sam back in Season 7.
Maybe Saving Bikini Bottom is the worst big budget Spongebob movie, but as a bad Spongebob product overall, it's still no One Coarse Meal, A Pal For Gary or Spongebob You're Fired. Heck, it still has more substance than the 10th Anniversary TV movie, Truth or Square, though it's not saying much.
Hard to believe this was written by pre-movie writer, Kaz, the same guy who gave us Chocolate with Nuts.
You know, they could have easily made this movie so much better if we dig into the reason why Sandy is in Bikini Bottom. I didn’t watch this movie, but I’m guessing they say she went for research, but who does she give that data to? It would have been such an amazing reveal to find out that she was working for Tsunami to help her learn more about sea creatures, but decided to stop because she knew her intentions. And the reveal would send in some tension between Sandy and the Bikini Bottom residents. Not to mention a heartbreaking moment for SpongeBob. But that’s too convoluted for kids. They wouldn’t like that kind of storytelling.
Before I watched the movie, this was basically how I thought the plot would go.
Then we had the original 2004 movie when Plankton plunges into true villainy and SpongeBob and Patrick at one point actually die.
Someone start a riot to get saving a bikini bottom off of Netflix just like fairy odder was off from Paramount plus

I'll say this that Sponge On the Run wasn't as bad as people paint it out to be. Yes, I understand the criticisms people have with that movie (the retcons and convoluted plot), but at least that one had effort put into it and had some genuinely comedic moments.
I remember when Mat did his tier list of which SpongeBob character is most likely to drop the F bomb. With this movie, it’s the audience that is most likely to drop numerous F bombs after watching this train wreck.
To reiterate what I commented in Mat’s review of Despicable Me 4, 2023’s animated movie slate is giving me 2013 and 2017 vibes, but not in a good way. With the exception of Inside Out 2 and Orion and the Dark, every other animated movie this year has ranged from mid to Megamind Vs. The Doom Syndicate (a.k.a Terrible).
At this point, Spongebob should've ended in 2004.
Or 2017.
SpongeBob would've ended along with the other 90's Nicktoons that ended in 2004 like Rugrats, Hey Arnold, Rocket Power, and Wild Thornberrys.

I've never seen a animated film get so much hate by almost everyone in such a long time. Granted, there have been more than a few animated films that have gotten tons of hate this decade, but not to an extent like this.
Will finally be checking this out not too far from now. We may be in for something....

It was worse than I could've imagined! I'm actually glad I didn't see the movie leaked early in the year because it put me in a bad mood and I maybe lost some brain cells!

Again, this is exactly why Stephen Hillenburg wanted SpongeBob to end after the first three seasons and even with the first SpongeBob movie as well.
I saw it and I have to say, the movie was disappointing. I felt like this was an insult to SpongeBob's 25th anniversary. I'm pretty uncertain and skeptical about "The Search of SquarePants"
"The Search of SquarePants" is a whole different movie

I saw this back when it leaked, I never felt so angry and betrayed while watching a movie in my whole life. I tried to cleanse my eyes watching the first movie after finishing this one, but watching the first one only made me realize how far SpongeBob fell from grace, it made me lose hope for the fourth SpongeBob movie, I ended up crying a little

True, Pipeline Studios worked on some animation, but I get the sense ReDefine and SPIN VFX were also heavily involved in animating these characters.
I can’t say exactly how heavily involved, but when you look at the end crawl and see how many people are listed underneath their respective studios, and should those studios put out breakdowns of their work on this film, we’ll probably get a better idea later down the line.
How sad is it that Larry the Lobster and Mr Krabs during the march, look more like robots than the robot horse?????
This franchise really needs to end already. Seriously. I have become SO F**KING SICK of Nickelodeon and Paramount just exploiting people’s nostalgia for money and milking that sea sponge dry with those subpar later episodes and even this. It was fun the first time, and Sponge on the Run was okay, but now I can understand from this film why the residents of Bikini Bottom have completely overstayed their welcome like Family Guy has.
