    I think the problem with the "this is a kids movie" argument is that the first movie's entire concept never started that way. The movie told a story of loss of a loved one and having to hide your daughter away from the world because of the fear and prejudice of humans, your daughter thinking they might have changed yet you feeling that humans could never change and even if they could you can't send the only thing you have left in the world out there off of a chance. It's an engaging premise that can tell a darker story. That's why adults criticize the movie for what it became because it had the potential to tell a story unlike any other ever told.

      Hell as someone pointed out in another comment section, the final movie could have easily be about Johnny being aware that he won't be around to see his kid grow because he has a longer vampiric life unlike him, maybe some drama about giving up on humanity to live forever with his kid and wife as a vampire.

    What bums me out about the premise to this movie is it had the potential to dive into some interesting territory. Mavis and now her father have humans as their significant others who will surely pass on while Mavis and Dracula stay immortal And the fear from that would have them debating whether or not they should give up their identity as monsters to avoid that heartbreak, Mavis in particular as she's shown throughout these movies that she jives more with humans. But I guess that's expecting too much from this franchise.

    • @hunterolaughlin

      And even at the ending where the original Hotel Transylvania is destroyed, I was expecting this to be a powerful and effective resolution to the series where Dracula learns to let go of his hotel and start a new age of monsters and human living together in peace. But that’s also too smart for this movie.

      I agree, but I think it's because all of those other movies were about Drac.
      His isolation.
      His fear of lost.
      His loneliness.
      His insecurity.
      What made the fourth movie so annoying is that they gave a plot device center stage. Johnny in the first movie was the antogonist. The second movie ... an accomplice. The third movie a side note, and then finally in the last movie ...he is actually a costar or can be seen as the protagonist.
      That is a bad evolutionary track.
      This is why his personality was so annoying. You have two movies to actually forget what Johnny is all about...because his personality was tone down to allow him to fade more into the background. Then he pops back to center stage and ...he is just awful to deal with.

  • @halfdemonprince
    @halfdemonprince 2 роки тому +500

    Hotel Transylvania 4 would've been better if the reason why Johnny and Drac got transformed was because of Mavis and Ericka. The setup would've been Jonathan did something so dangerously stupid that it caused him to be hospitalized and almost die. This could cause Mavis to come to the realization that Jonathan is mortal, which means she'll outlive him. Ericka, being her new mom, could notice that something was troubling Mavis and ask her what was wrong. Once Mavis explains, Ericka could try to assure her that everything will be ok at first. Then maybe she could discover the old painting of Drac's wife, marvel at her beauty, then realize that she too is mortal and will grow old and die one day. These intrusive thoughts could allow Van Helsing to introduce them to the transformation ray gun, thus causing Jonathan and Drac to be transformed. Mavis and Ericka could keep their motives a secret and try to encourage Drac and Jonathan to play along in their new roles and convince them that this "freak accident" was a good thing. Eventually, Mavis and Ericka will lament at how changing Drac and Jonathan also got rid of what made both of them fall in love in the first place and cause them to go on an expedition to the island to get a new crystal to change them back. The conflict will be the reveal that Mavis and Ericka changed them without their consent due to the insecurity of their futures. Drac and Jonathan will be mad at first, but once Mavis and Ericka explain why they did it they could hug them, understand where they came from, and assure them that no matter how much they change they'll always love them. This plot wouldn't be perfect, but it would've at least given Mavis and Ericka some much-needed development and character exploration and added some maturity to the series.

    I liked the first three movies, but nearly hated the fourth one all because of Johnny. If they had to include him, at least show Johnny that he needs to change and be more responsible. The opening if the movie perfectly displayed that when a chandelier nearly crushed some hotel guests because of his actions. Maybe if Drac learned to be more chill while Johnny learned to be more responsible would have been a better message. Throughout most of the movie, I was rooting for Drac, which is something I can’t say with the other three. That’s how unlikeable Johnny is.

      @bloodmooncomics2249 2 роки тому +79

      100% agree. I hated Johnny since the first movie. He is awful and everyone else has to change for him. He never has to learn anything. What gets me is that Mavis looks 18 and was played off being 18 in vampire years when she met Johnny and Johnny was 21. Now he is in his early 30s maybe late 20s, but he never grew up. I guess you can say Mavis still kind of acts 18 (which in vampire years of what the original movie set up) which makes her blame Drac for everything and teams up with her man. The bad thing since they forced the whole Johnny never has to be a monster now he will get older and older as Mavic will only get about three or four years older. So, soon Mavic will look more like a daughter then a granddaughter. She is going to outlive her husbands by hundreds of years.

    In terms of creature design, Johnny as a dragon or whatever he's supposed to be is messy to put it lightly. It might be just me but there's too much going on visually with the bright greens, yellow n orange color along which also includes his already existent bright clothes n little to no complementary color n the only thing trying to balance it out is his hair which says a lot since he's a red head. The disastrous color scheme along with the exaggerated n over energetic squash n stretch noodle-like movement makes him even more obnoxious on screen than he was as a human sometimes. Seriously, it's like a toddler's crayon scribble came to life. Some would say the crazy design fits his personality which should be the point of a design but this is Johnny, who is already loud, hyperactive n obnoxious alone as a human, so dealing with a monster version of him n amping up his annoying antiques is more than unwanted.

    Johnny was always a great element to work on in the films.
    He was constantly pushed to the side when it came to physical confrontation such as in the second movie, leaving Johnny not so much an irrelevant character, but a weak character. As a father you'd expect his lack of physical ability to protect his family when the bat monsters came, or when the Kraken went postal in the 3rd movie, to be a deep source of contention in him.
    While in the 3rd movie Johnny played an important role in terms of counter acting Van Helsing's musical control over the Kraken, for everything else he was next to useless.
    I always imagined that the 4th movie would be Johnny more exploring this side of his role in the family, that while he's not unimportant, he feels incapable when important or dangerous situations come up. And to counter act this he would reflect on finding the need to become an Vampire to be able to at least replicate Dracula's and Mavis's abilities when the need arises. Compound on that the fact that as a human he would age and die of old age much much sooner than Mavis or even Dracula. This could in a way carry over to Erika as well, since she's human as well the longetivity difference between Erika and Drac could expand in terms of how many characters are afflicted by this issue and also still demonstrate the gaps between the human and monster worlds.
    I would imagine that a 'made' vampire could be more mentally unstable than a 'born' vampire leading to Johnny and possibly Erika eventually being turned back. But in teh process learn that despite not having the same physical capabilities or lifespan as Drac and Mavis, Johnny could find himself being more useful in such situations when he's there and able to apply some extra level of creativity or use of a weapon rather than just his fists for example. And while the lifespan issue would remain largely unanswered (or possibly answered if they decided to have Johnny and Erika turn to vampires and stay vampires) both Johnny and Erika would learn to just accept it as an unfortunate part of the relationships they've found themselves in. Or they could finish that in a 5th movie (god help us), but at least it would be an idea to work towards.
    Though while I haven't seen the 4th movie yet, it seems they did part of this. They had Johnny's lack of being a monster be an issue, but it's more around Dracula not fully accepting him despite their interactions in movie 2 and 3, and Drac not wanting to hand the Hotel to him, and Johnny taking the eccentricity level up to 20. Plus what turned me off immediately is when they turned Johnny into a dragon of some kind, and a rather goofy one at that. Combine that with my rather noble and majestic view of dragons Johnny's behavior kinda makes the whole thing even less attractive to me.

Or they can combine the movies with the TV series, I would love to see how Lydia would react if she knew that her brother and her niece are married to humans, and I want Mavis to introduce Johnny to her old friends. I completely hated how Mavis acted when Drac froze time at the start of the movie to avoid chaos. I mean seriously if Drac didn't intervene then Johnny would've ruined it all. But Mavis doesn't acknowledge any of that. All she sees is Drac ruining Johnny's efforts. Mavis was dislikeable for me. Johnny was straight up annoying. You'd think that a chill dude like him who has emotions (as shown in the first movie) would try to understand Drac a little (Especially since Drac already accepted him). And maybe talk to him, tell him that he won't change the hotel much. Or that he will keep the hotel safe for Drac and for all Monsters but I guess it wouldn't be a movie for kids if Johnny wasn't all loud, annoying and childish.
    I also wish we had a serious moment/fight/conflict between Mavis and Drac. Like maybe have Mavis be all mad about Drac not wanting to give the key to Johnny and then have Drac explain why he doesn't want the Hotel to change by mentioning that Mavis's mom got killed by humans. That's the thing, Mavis says Humans and monsters can live togheter peacefully and she's right but she ignores the fact that that wasn't the case in the past. Monsters were being hunted so naturally Drac made a safe heaven for him, Mavis and all monsters.

    I can happily agree with you that the Hotel Transylvania franchise is the most uninspired that I have ever seen. Ever since I have seen the trailer for the first film back in theatres in 2012, I knew that this film alongside with others would end up in the bargain bin all because of stories that were so tediously dull that makes elders and even certain children fall asleep at the FIRST MINUTE of the films and animation that is so over the top that it is nauseating than charming and it actually hurts my eyes. PHYSICALLY.

    I feel like Johnny was way better in the first 3 films. Sure, he had times where he could be hyper, but those were at more appropriate times. He mostly a chill dude that I think could have had more to his personality shown throughout the sequels. He's shown to be extremely supportive and caring for others and wanting them to be the best they could be and happy. He also knew when things could become problematic like in the first film, when Mavis said that he wanted to be with him, even though she found out he was human. As much as he wanted to, he saw that there would be issues with them being together because he felt that he was only going to bring more damage to both Mavis and more importantly Drac since Drac literally told him that his wife was murdered by humans, hence why he left.
    That's what I liked about the old Johnny. He kind of knew when things were going to be problematic and tried his best to try not to let them happen.
    In the forth however... I hated every single second he was onscreen.
    I dunno, it's my silly opinion. If you guys have your opinion on Johnny whether or not you love or hate him, I respect your opinions.😁👍

  • @spicynoodles2742
    @spicynoodles2742 2 роки тому +4

    A comment already said it, but something I liked about the first movie is that the characters had a certain depth. The concept of monsters being afraid of humans, because of how they were hunted in other times to the point that they have an entire hotel to hide in, is a very interesting idea. Also that each character had their fears, desires and goals, which at this point no longer exist.
    I think what I liked the most about the first one is when they delve into how Dracula lost the love of his life, because it is a moment that matters, and even Jonny acts with seriousness and respect, and that is when we can see Dracula more vulnerable, like also see how humans have changed, and talk about the legend of that lost love. I personally feel like they messed up that whole concept behind Dracula by giving him a new girlfriend in the other movies. It's okay for him to find someone else, but I don't think they've delved into what it's like to lose someone you love and find someone else.
    Also something I hate is that Jonny never gets any character development and Marvis is basically the one in charge of everything, while Jonny is still basically a man-child. It's annoying after a while, Marvis deserves better

    Johnny wasn't actually that bad in the first one, immature yes but not too much. Thing is that the following movies amped all them immature character traits to 20 out of 10. I think the series wouldn't of benefited from his removal but instead from him getting an actual character plot and actually growing/maturing over the course of the movies especially since he has a son. The problem was that they still wanted their movies to play like looney toons cartoons and he was the prime character to cause whatever minor plot or generally enact quite a few considering the immature personality they cultivated some.
