44:42 The idea behind swapping the controller port is that you are using the 'opposite side of your brain' so to speak, which is why Mantis struggles with reading your moves after that. It shows Snake is just built different and on another level, that he can chose to just switch his brain functions over in the middle of a fight.
35:46 Hideo Kojima, the creator of Metal Gear Solid of course. It also mimics what would happen if you accidental changed the channel/input on an analogue tv and 'VIDEO' would pop up so it was even more confusing back in the day.
Hideo is the game’s director/writer/creator Hideo Kojima. He’s a weirdo and has his own style you’ll get used to. The MGS games and even Death Stranding all have a distinct Hideo style. Great recap btw.
The original PS1 controller had no vibration. The Dualshock controller with it's fancy new vibration had barely existed for a year when this game came out, which really added to the magic of Psycho Mantis' telekinesis trick!
Some fun trivia: If you had waited to follow Meryl into the bathroom, she would have been fully dressed, but since you were so quick she "couldn't finish". Also, if you stare at her in first person, she starts blushing and her model turns pink. Also, you are correct in your inferring.
RE the chunkiness of the romance and Snakes general horniness, one of Kojima's the inspirations for the game was James Bond, so there is that; it wasn't just 'a nineties thing'.
You nearly had the choking thing. When they struggle you are meant to press the button to subdue them and stop them escaping, but don't push it repeatedly. Punching and kicking Meryl would of also worked, but she's pretty tough so it takes a few attacks.
Obviously you must continue onto MGS2 after this, but if you’d like to play another incredibly influential and revolutionary game from that time, please consider playing the original Fallout (1997) and Fallout 2 (1998).
Psycho Mantis whooped me..on my 2nd playthrough. When I 1st got to him, I went to use the bathroom and when I returned I accidentally picked up the player 2 paddle. I thought it was anti climatic...lol
He would say stuff like "So you like Castlevania?" If you have Castlevania: Symphony of the Night saves. It works for other Konami games too
32:52 Yes he would of read you Memory Card on the PlayStation, and commented if you had certain Konami game saves there.

This is such a good playthrough
